A growing concern for your safety …

At FortisAlberta, there is a growing concern for the safety of farmers. Annually, FortisAlberta has about 275 contacts with overhead and underground power lines. Most of these contacts involved damage to equipment, electricity facilities and property, and each had the potential for serious injury or death. However, each and every one of these contacts could have been prevented by proper planning.

Know the Height and Location of the Power Lines Knowing the height and width of your vehicles and equipment, including the added height of extendable or attached parts such as sprayer arms, cranes or augers, will help you determine how far away you need to be from the lines to ensure your safety at all times. Knowing the location and height of power lines in the area allows you to safely plan your work around them. Remember to always maintain a distance of at least seven metres from the nearest overhead power line when your vehicle or equipment is parked and operating. If you think you will need to work closer to the power line, first contact the local utility.

Know the Height of Your Vehicle and Equipment The size and height of equipment, particularly in the agriculture industry, has grown immensely over the past fifty years, whereas the height of power lines has remained the same. As farming season begins, FortisAlberta encourages you to familiarize yourself with the power lines on or near your land.

If you are unsure of the height of your equipment, refer to your owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer to confirm. FortisAlberta also suggests that you need to take the time to factor in wires and poles in your route planning. A number of incidents have been related to driver inattention linked to vehicles being auto-piloted through GPS coordinates on route to the field and once in the field.

Hazard Assessment and Strategies for Working Alone on the Farm A hazard assessment is the first step farm owners and managers should take to make farms safer for employees working alone. This is a process of identifying existing or potential hazards on the work site.

“When identifying farm workplace hazards, farmers should talk to their workers and, if pos-

sible, review any incidents that happened over the previous two or three years,” says Lubeck.

“Employers can check with other farms or similar businesses if they do not have personal experiences or records of past incidents.”

Employers should then carefully examine the workplace,

day-to-day management practices, and other situations that may put employees at risk. This will help employers develop and put in place preventative measures to address these problems. An employer’s review should look at: • factors that make the risk of occupational injury more likely or severe, such as hazardous work,

Keep Fatigue out of Farm Shift Work Most farmers would agree that farming is no nine to five job.

Work on farms normally includes shift work, and it gets particularly “shifty” during peak seasons such as spring or harvest.

While some people can adapt to shift work – and even thrive on it – others find it difficult to get into a rhythm. Finding a rhythm with work/life balance is important to acquiring enough sleep and maintaining the balance, energy and strength to work safely.

“Most shift workers, including those on farms, don’t get enough sleep,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator for Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

“When you’re tired, you may think and move slowly, make more mistakes and have difficulty remembering things. This can lead to increased hazards on a farm worksite.”

The human body has a 24hour cycle of wakefulness and

sleepiness. This is what tells our bodies to sleep at night and be awake during the day. Any time a worker disrupts this cycle they need to develop a strategy that will help their body adjust. Incorporating a variety of physical activities into your day and eating a balanced diet can be a good strategy to have.

The National Sleep Foundation has lots of helpful tips for staying alert on the job and for sleeping. Here are some of their suggestions: • Take short breaks throughout your shift and go for a walk or stretch.

• Try to work with a buddy.

• Try to exercise during breaks.

• If possible, talk with coworkers while you work.

• Try to eat three normal meals per day. Eat healthy snacks, avoiding foods that may upset your stomach.

• If you consume caffeine

(coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, gum, mints), do so early in the shift.

• Don’t leave the most tedious or boring tasks to the end of your shift when you will most likely feel sleepy.

• Exchange ideas with coworkers on ways to cope with any problems of shift work.

• Avoid exercising just before bed time, because exercise raises energy and your body temperature. Exercise should be done at least three hours before sleeping.

“There isn’t a lot farmers can do to reduce shift work as it’s a necessity to getting a large amount of work done in a short amount of time,” says Lubeck.

“The important thing is to have someone available to take the next shift at the specified time.

When people push themselves too hard that’s when work incidents and injuries occur.”

e.g. working with equipment and machinery, isolation from first aid services, and inability to call for help; • the effectiveness of existing safety measures such as guards and shields, equipment operation protocol, and personal protective equipment. Find out whether those measures are being used and whether employees have been adequately trained in their use.

The following strategies are key to controlling hazards and reducing the risks associated with working alone: Safe Work Procedure – Having written safe work procedures for hazardous jobs is essential.

This provides standard instruction to all employees to carry out the work safely.

Equipment Safety – The farm owner/manager must ensure that employees use equipment as intended and according to the manufacturer’s specifications. All equipment used at a work site must be maintained in good working condition, whether or not it is being used in a “working alone” situation. High hazard equipment should have a deadman (kill) switch to prevent continued activation of the equipment. The switch should always be in good working order.

Equipment and Supplies – In addition to proper equipment,

appropriate first aid and emergency supplies must be provided to employees who are working alone at a work site.

Travel Plan – If employees are working alone in a remote location, the employer should establish a sign-out procedure to track their whereabouts. An “overdue employee” procedure should also be in place for locating employees who fail to report on time.
