Time to Guard New Crop Prices

With grain prices moving, there is increasing interest from growers on guarding new crop production. A general rule many producers follow is. . . don’t forward price more than 30 per cent of your expected grain production prior to the seed drill hitting the field. This allows falltime bill payments to be met with profitable grain sales.

There are a variety of pricing tools that can be used as a part of a forward pricing program. When considering pre-pricing new crop grains and oilseeds in the weeks ahead, some suggested steps should be taken into account.

Signing deferred delivery contracts (DDC’s) is the first step. By starting new crop pricing using DDC’s, there is no need to provide upfront margin money if contracting through a grain broker. But, don’t aggressively sign DDC contracts. Inability to provide grain or proper quality to meet contract requirements could produce financial hardship after harvest. Grain company payout penalties take a toll. Use DDC’s up to your personal grain production comfort level.

Once you’ve reached your comfort level by signing cash DDC contracts, it’s time to add ‘put options’ to your pricing portfolio.

Put options are essentially price insurance policies. ‘Puts’ guard against price spills. For instance, some growers are now scaling in December corn put options for general all-purpose grain price protection. Put options don’t commit growers to grain delivery

and no margin calls. As a result, growers could protect up to 100 per cent expected production using puts are a guard. Note: November canola put options can guard a $12/bu plus return with no delivery obligation.

Remember, the best case scenario is that the puts expire worthless . . . that means the fall cash bid has moved higher yet.

But if markets drop, put options will do their job and protect the farm investment.

Selling futures as a protective price ‘hedge’ also doesn’t commit growers to physical grain delivery. If using futures as a part of your pre-pricing program, be prepared for margin calls, they are the inevitable.

A Farmer’s Experiment in Tithing from a book written in 1940 by a farmer named Perry Hayden.

Perry Hayden heard his pastor preach a message about tithing. Malachi 3:10-12; John 12:24 He decided to try an experiment to see how much harvest a seed would produce. His plan was to sow one cubic inch of wheat — 360 kernels. He committed to the Lord that, for a period of 6 yrs, he would tithe 10% of the harvest and sow the rest. In the 1st yr, he took a 4ft x 8ft plot of land to sow 1 cubic inch of seed. At harvest time, he scraped the ground in order to get every kernel of wheat. Every precious seed counted. The 1st year produced a 50-fold harvest. He tithed 10%. In the 2nd year, it took 24ft x 60ft plot of land to sow the seed from the harvest of the 1st yr. He tithed 10%. In the 3rd yr, it took 3 quarters of an acre to sow. He tithed 10%. In the 4th yr, it took 14 acres to sow.

He tithed 10%. In the 5th yr, it took 230 acres to sow. He tithed 10%. By the 6th yr, it took over 2600 acres to sow 5,000 bushels. 360 kernels had turned into 55 billion. And the largest yield was 150-fold. Perry Hayden made $288,000 in 6 yrs compared to the other farmers who only made an average of $21,000. The experiment worked. God can bless your harvest when you tithe.

Ibn Yachya and Sforno describes the pauper as a man whose health has deteriorated to the point that he stumbles unless he uses a cane. When the Jews left Egypt, a miracle occurred —not a single person among them was sick or debilitated. d. Psalm 105:43 (AMP):“He brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen ones with gladness and singing.”

“Take an Alfalfa Break” in Grain Crop Rotations Perennial legumes such as alfalfa have an excellent place in cereal and oilseed crop rotations. With such a different growth habit, perennial legumes provide a key break in grain crop disease cycles. Legume’s ability to capture nitrogen out of the air addresses the even greater need of improving soil fertility. Also, the demand for high quality hay is rising as forage acres drop.

“Annual crop diseases were high in 2012 across Western Canada,” says Grant Lastiwka, forage/grazing/beef specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Diseases such as fusarium, aster yellows, scald, net blotch, blackleg and clubroot, as well as some insect issues, made 2012 a challenging year for cereal and oilseed growers. Grain and oilseed yields were less than expected, although high prices made up for this shortfall. Annual crop rotations are getting tight and this was notable in the 2012 crop year. Knowing that in the second year a disease like blackleg can worsen, it makes sense to put forage in an annual crop rotation for two to three years, it can be a good approach to break pest cycles.”

Inoculated legumes are able to capture nitrogen from the air through a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. Nitrogen fixation amounts will vary with nodulation effectiveness, fertility, soil type, soil pH, moisture, length and warmth of growing season, etc.

“In as little as two to three years of perennial legume production, the maximum nitrogen capture can occur,” says Lastiwka. “With nitrogen fertilizer costing over $0.60/pound of actual N in 2013, a legume can create a nitrogen store of $40 to $100+/acre. This allows for a short-term alfalfa hay “intervention” in a cereal oilseed crop rotation to have another synergistic profit consideration.

“The nitrogen store produced by the legume is available to following crops for a one- to three-year period. The timing and length of nitrogen release to the following annual crops is mainly based on the method of removal of the legume in the rotation, and aggressiveness of land cultivations thereafter. Nitrogen is released more slowly and more

effectively over a longer period if glyphosate is used to remove the legume and followed by a zerotill cropping system.”

Work by Dr. Martin Entz from the University of Manitoba has shown alfalfa creates soil benefits to annual crops following it in rotation for up to 10 years after an alfalfa removal. The reason for this is the ability for these crops to more easily explore soils in search of nutrients by using old alfalfa root channels. Another benefit is probably from improved soil organic matter.

“The demand for hay in Alberta was up this past year,” says Lastiwka. “The longer winter and an industry trend to lower hay yields from older forage stands in the last few years were two reasons for this. A third reason is the growing potential of the hay export market to the USA and abroad. There is a growing need for high quality forage in other countries around the world where water supply is limited. The Marketing committee of the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association is very excited about this potential after completing two highly successful trade missions to potential hay purchasing countries over the last three years.

“Countries with limited water supplies are trying to make long term plans to purchase forage and divert their water use from forage production to a greater focus on human food production.

With domestic and export hay market potential improving, the net return for the alfalfa crop in rotation is going to be higher with greater stability from year to year.”

With gross income being favorable in the grain industry for a prolonged period of time, it makes sense that there would be a movement to more of a grain monoculture in Canada and the United States. This does come at increasing costs from annual crop pests and rising farm inputs.

The perennial legume use in a cereal crop rotation may give favorable returns, allow for more profits in future grain crops and improve soil quality. Introducing a perennial legume in your cropping rotation may be a wise and profitable consideration for the 2013 cropping season.
