After Surgery A man who had just undergone a very complicated operation kept complaining about a bump on his head and a terrible headache.

Since his operation had been an intestinal one, there was no earthly reason why he should be complaining of a headache.

Finally his nurse, fearing that the man might be suffering from some post-operative shock, spoke to the doctor about it.

The doctor assured the nurse, "Don't worry about a thing. He really does have a bump on his head. About halfway through the operation we ran out of anesthetic."

There was a knock at the door.

It was a small boy, about six years old. Something of his had found its way into my garage, he said, and he wanted it back.

Upon opening the garage door, I noticed two additions: a baseball and a broken window sporting a baseball-sized hole. "How do you suppose this ball got in here?" I asked the boy.

Taking one look at the ball, one look at the window, and one look at me, the boy exclaimed, "Wow! I must have thrown it right through that hole!"

High Grain Costs Changes the Feeding Rules “In years when grain was cheap, it was logical to make up for any nutrient shortfalls with a bit of extra grain,” says Ken Ziegler, beef and forage specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “An extra pound or two of barley covered up any nutrient deficiencies from the hay and backgrounded calves did fine. Today, because of the rising cost of grain, the quest to control the cost per pound of gain is more challenging.”

The challenge this fall will be to achieve adequate animal growth with minimal grain. This new dynamic in the feeding industry drives the need for quality forage to do the job. Consider these suggestions and take the necessary steps to achieve qual-

ity forage for backgrounded calves this coming fall and winter: • Harvest the hay crop with a quality goal in mind. Consider that total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 65 per cent or more will provide back grounded calves with enough energy to grow at least 1.75 average daily gain (ADG) or more when fed hay alone. Using implants and ionophores, or raising the feed TDN improves the calf performance to 2lbs ADG. • Stage of maturity at harvest is the most important factor in forage quality. As plants mature, forage quality declines. This is because the proportion of fibrous stems increases while leaf content decreases. Managing the

cutting date is one practice that does not cost more but has incredible implications for forage quality. Cutting grasses at the early bloom stage or legumes during the bud to early flower stage will help ensure high quality hay. This may mean cutting anywhere from 7 to 14 days earlier than another year.

• Many losses are visible such as leaf shatter; however other losses such as respiration are invisible. Aim to reduce field losses by cutting early in the morning.

Use as wide a swath as possible to increase solar drying. Speed dry down by raking the windrows when the moisture content is between 40 to 50 per cent. Bale when the moisture content is near 18 per cent or higher if

using forage preservatives.

• Nearly all harvesting losses are due to leaf shatter. Leaves dry down three to five times faster than stems and become very brittle at moisture levels below 30 per cent. The risk of nutrient losses and weather damage can be reduced by harvesting the forage crop at 40 to 55 per cent moisture. Chopped silage, plastic wrapping or tubing bales are all options for harvesting high moisture forage crops.

• If you do decide to dry the feed down to conventional hay, consider using bale wrap instead of twine. Bale wrap sheds rainfall better than twine. The majority of the hay within a hay bale is in the first four inches. Reducing storage losses of the quality feed in-

creases the amount of feed available this fall.

• Ramp up your storage strategy. As quality feed becomes more valuable, the economics of storing it well changes. Consider placing the bales on high well drained ground with a layer of straw underneath. The cost of tarps becomes incidental when storing quality feed compared to average feed. Hay sheds offer excellent value in storing high quality feed.

• Once baled, haul the feed off of the field immediately and get it under cover. Early harvesting may provide the opportunity for a second harvest. In grass based forage stands, second cut growth often has a high leaf:stem ratio resulting in high quality forage for

use as hay, silage or pasture.

• Feed test the forage early in the year, preferably after 20 days from hay baling or immediately during silage. The results will tell you whether you have met your goal for quality feed this winter or if you need to adjust your plans.

Remember that high quality forage can always be mixed off with straw for your cows if it turns out to be inadequate for your calves.

“Happy feeding calves this coming fall,” says Ziegler. “May they be tall, thick and slick by spring with a minimum of grain consumed over the winter.”

RedMoon Custom Petfood Celebrates New Plant Opening An AVAC Ltd investee, RedMoon Custom Petfood, cele-

brated the grand opening of a new production plant in Cross-

field on April 28, 2011. The RedMoon plant is a key achievement

for this rural Alberta company, the first Canadian plant to offer custom-made pet food online.

With the new plant, RedMoon can now provide their private label goods to select companies for distribution.

“We are the only soft dog food plant in Canada that can scale products,” said Jason Bailey, RedMoon founder and CEO, “using our own products, process and formula to create otherbranded products for different companies.”

AVAC provided RedMoon with a $700,000 funding commitment to meet their development plans.

“AVAC is pleased to work with RedMoon,” said Ross Bricker, AVAC president and CEO. “They

represent key areas for us, and for Alberta, including the pet food industry, primary agricultural products, and the rural agriculture economy.

“Our investment with RedMoon is helping their established business, supporting their market growth in Canada and the U.S. and assisting in continued market expansion.”

“We have been positioning ourselves to produce everything in our own plant for two years,” added Bailey. “New product development is also key, and we can now do testing on site. This was an important milestone in the AVAC funding we received.”

Along with Alberta Financial Services Corporation (AFSC),

the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA) invested in RedMoon. Gordon Cove, ALMA president and CEO, says the agency’s investment in this project helps the industry become more profitable and sustainable.

“ALMA’s Growing Forward grant to RedMoon is part of a roadmap for working with industry to increase the demand of Alberta and Canada’s meat and livestock products,” said Cove.

Training Workers to Ensure a Safe and Productive Farming Season Now that spring has arrived, farmers are ready to get back into the fields and implement their plans for the coming season.

This may mean hiring employees to get the job done as efficiently as possible. For farm managers and staff supervisors, it’s important to ensure that everyone has the knowledge and skills to prevent injuries and fatalities on the job.

Statistics suggest that youth aged 15 to 29, many learning about agriculture for the first time, make up a significant portion of seasonal farm workers in Alberta.

Employers are responsible to provide all workers with essential training to ensure their safety on the job regardless of their background.

“It’s important to address three areas in preparation for a safe farming season,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Employees must know the job, know the hazards associated with the job, and know the action required to handle hazardous situations.”

Knowing the job means ensuring all workers are properly trained ahead of time for each new task they need to perform.

Farms have become larger, and more inexperienced labour is being hired. In addition increased complexity and technological advancements in farm machinery and production processes emphasize the need for new worker training.

Tips to effectively train new

workers effectively: • provide comprehensive training for complex tasks such as equipment operation or chemical application • explain and demonstrate techniques that will make a task easier • provide comprehensive training for complex tasks such as equipment operation or chemical application • specify dos and don’ts of potentially hazardous tasks • ensure appropriate warning decals are in place, read and understood by all workers • once training is complete, monitor job performance to ensure workers fully understand the job and are following all safety precautions • provide information about equipment maintenance requirements • encourage open lines of communication for effective feedback and proactive measures • give recognition for a job done safely “Identification of hazards is a critical step to safe farming,” adds Lubeck. “Especially for new or young workers, hazard assessment will help them plan appropriately to maintain safe work practices.”

Help new workers learn to recognize hazards: • alert them to specific hazards and how to avoid them – such as working with livestock, chemicals, tractors, farm implements, and other equipment • include safety information in

the job description, hiring process, orientation and training, performance reviews, compensation and disciplinary actions • explain risks of exposure to dust, noise, chemicals and toxic materials, and how to prevent related incidents or injuries • ensure all employees wear suitable clothing for the environment • maintain adequate supplies of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) • lead by example – employers should use safe work practices to demonstrate how employees are expected to behave • emphasize and reinforce that shortcuts on safety are un-

acceptable • keep safety top of mind by encouraging discussion on an ongoing basis “Once workers are trained to run equipment and recognize hazards, the final step is to ensure they can apply their knowledge to prevent incidents, avoid injuries, and ensure everything runs smoothly,” says Lubeck.

Steps to manage hazards: • discuss various farm hazards that come up in the work and what can be done to avoid or manage them – ensure this is implemented • prevent back injuries by ensuring new employees understand correct lifting techniques and monitor staff on the job to en-

sure they are lifting properly • encourage workers to report unsafe conditions and equipment. Timely action can save money and reduce the potential for injuries • provide direction ahead of time about how to handle an emergency situation • provide access to two-way communication such as a mobile phone or radio • ensure all workers and family members know how to contact emergency services • ensure at least some staff and family members have current first-aid training • teach employees how to use fire extinguishers – in the hands of a trained employee, a small

fire extinguisher could be the difference between a minor brush fire and the loss of a farmer’s livelihood “Trained and educated workers experience less frustration, greater morale, higher productivity and benefit from a safer workplace,” says Lubeck. “When provided with training and experience to gain confidence with tasks, new workers will be ready to take personal responsibility for ensuring their own safety on the job.”
