The head of the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) says June is a great time to find out how to protect Alberta’s elm trees.

“Dutch Elm Disease Awareness Week is recognized annually throughout the province of Alberta from June 22 - 28,” says Janet Feddes-Calpas, executive director, STOPDED. “As such, June is an ideal time for taking a moment to find out how you can help save our elms. Our elms are a treasure that we cannot afford to lose.”

What can you do?

• Be aware of the Alberta elm pruning ban between April 1and September 30. The beetles are most active at this time and can

be attracted to the scent of fresh tree cuts, possibly infecting a healthy elm.

• Keep your elm trees healthy, and vigorous.

• Water elms well from April to mid August. To allow the tree to harden off for the winter, watering should be stopped mid -August followed by a good soaking or two before freeze-up.

• Only between October 1 to March 31, remove dead branches and trees as they can provide beetle habitat.

• Dispose of all elm wood immediately by burning, burying or chipping.

• Report all suspect trees to the DED Hotline at 1-877-837ELMS. A confirmed DED tree

must be removed immediately to prevent further spread.

What you shouldn’t do: • Do not transport or store elm firewood at any time! DED and the beetles are declared pests under the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act making it illegal to do so.

• Do not transport elm firewood into Alberta! Firewood is confiscated at all the AlbertaMontana border crossings.

• Do not prune elms between April 1 and September 30.

“Hell or High Water” T-shirts raise money for the Red Cross Calgary – “Hell or High Water” t-shirts are now available at the Calgary Stampede online store, with proceeds from each t-shirt sold being donated to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Floods Fund, which is actively providing relief to flood victims.

“The phrase “Hell or High Water” suddenly appeared in social media attached to our brand,” says Deanne Carson, vice-president marketing and external relations, Calgary Stampede. “It has really become a tagline to the optimism, power and resiliency of the community to get the job done no matter what obstacles we face.”

Over the weekend the phrase emerged and then began to circulated heavily through social media, it has been quoted and people have used it as a hashtag on Twitter; it has

Stacking Agronomic Practices to Maximize Wheat Yield A new research study could increase yields and profitability for Alberta wheat producers.

“The research is investigating three agronomic practices: supplemental nitrogen fertilizer, plant

growth regulators (PGRs) and foliar fungicide applications,” says Sheri Strydhorst, agronomic research scientist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Barrhead.

search which aims to determine the synergistic benefits of stacking agronomic practices to maximize wheat yield.

“There have been a number of studies looking at these individual

“The importance of applying fertilizer nutrients to maximize crop production is well recognized,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “Most producers apply all of the required fertilizer at the time of seeding in the spring.

The amount of fertilizer applied at seeding is based on yield expectations, which in turn is related to factors such as soil moisture levels and expected growing season conditions. Once the growing season begins certain situations may arise, such as the occurrence of better than average growing conditions or the presence of a nutrient deficiency that may require an in-crop fertilizer application.

The application of a fertilizer after crop emergence can potentially increase yield when above average growing conditions occur or reduce yield losses in the case of a nutrient deficiency.”

When in-crop fertilizer applications are being evaluated, factors such as timing of the fertilizer application, fertilizer product choice and method of application need to be considered. “Evaluating these factors will allow the nutrients to be provided to the plant in a timely matter in order to gain a yield ben-

efit,” says Cutts. “Discussed below are two situations where an incrop fertilizer application can be considered.”

When better than average growing conditions occur, the nutrient most commonly applied is nitrogen. Using cereal crops as an example, the majority of nitrogen that contributes to yield is taken up by the plant in the first few weeks after germination. For applications that are attempting to increase yield a nitrogen fertilizer should be applied no later than the tillering stage of the crop. Applications at this stage of crop development will provide nitrogen to the crop during its period of greatest uptake. Fertilizer product options include urea (46-0-0) and liquid UAN (28-0-0).

Broadcasting the urea or surface dribble banding liquid UAN are effective ways to apply the nitrogen.

“It should be noted that for nitrogen fertilizer applications to be successful rainfall is required to move the nutrients into the soil for plant uptake,” says Cutts. “If it doesn’t rain, the nitrogen fertilizer will be stranded on the soil surface and will be subject to losses to the atmosphere as a result of volatilization. The risk of volatilization losses can be reduced by using a urease inhibitor (e.g. Agrotain).”

In-crop fertilizer applications can also be a benefit when a nutrient deficiency is detected. Using

canola as an example, a sulphur deficiency is of particular concern because of the negative impact it has on yield. If a sulphur deficiency is present, the Canola Council of Canada indicates that a sulphur fertilizer product can be applied up to early flowering and still result in a yield benefit. A surface broadcast of ammonium sulphate (21-0-0-24) or a surface dribble band application of liquid ammonium thiosulphate (12-0-0-26) will allow the sulphur to reach the soil surface. Elemental sulphur will not provide plant available sulphur in time to address the sulphur deficiency and should not be used.

Like the nitrogen products, rain is required to move the fertilizer into the root system of the plant.

In the absence of rain the sulphur product will be stranded; however, volatilization losses are lower with these products as compared to urea and UAN. “In certain situations in-crop fertilizer applications can provide a yield benefit,” says Cutts. “In order to achieve this yield response it’s important to apply the correct fertilizer at the proper stage of crop development. There is also a requirement for rain to ensure the fertilizer becomes available for plant uptake.”

practices, but there is very limited research testing their combined, and potentially synergistic, effects,” she says. “For example, supplemental nitrogen fertilizer and foliar fungicides may each individually increase yields by five per cent, but when used in combination with PGRs is it possible to achieve a 20 per cent yield increase?”

Nitrogen fertilizer applications can increase yield and profitability.

Supplemental nitrogen fertilizer applied at the time of maximum crop uptake can maximize yield potential, while late season applications tend to only increase grain protein content. High nitrogen fertilizer rates can cause crop lodging. The research study will investigate the yield benefits associated with applying urea ammonium nitrate at multiple rates with and without a urease inhibitor, during the time of maximum crop uptake.

“There is a lot of interest in using PGRs in intensive management systems,” says Strydhorst. “If applied at the correct growth stage and under ideal conditions, PGRs will produce shorter (2 to 15 cm shorter), thicker and stronger stems that improve lodging resistance. Although occasional yield increases have been reported, the main purpose of PGRs is to reduce lodging associated with high input production, reduce combine harvest time, and reduce straw production. The research project will study the effects of two PGRs (Cycocel and Ethrel) in high input production systems.”

Foliar fungicides must protect the upper canopy leaves to permit a longer period for grain fill, which leads to higher yields, and increased kernel weight. The research project will study the effects of single foliar fun-

gicide applications made at the time of flag leaf extension and a second foliar fungicide application made 14 days later when the wheat head is half emerged.

The final component of this study is to examine genetic responses to agronomic practices.

“International research has shown that cultivars respond differently to supplemental nitrogen fertilizer, PGRs and foliar fungicides,” explains Strydhorst. “This study will investigate how current Alberta wheat varieties respond to intensive agronomic management and if some cultivars are more responsive than others.”

There are 48 treatments in this study to examine the synergistic benefits of stacking two and/or three of these agronomic practices.

“In addition to assessing yield benefits, a basic economic analysis will be conducted to determine the return on investment associated with individual and stacked agronomic practices,” says Strydhorst.

“One of the study’s guiding principles is to ensure that the increased wheat yields will cover the additional input costs associated with these intensive management systems.”

Field trials are being grown at Barrhead, Willingdon and Lacombe, Alberta, in 2013. Plot tours showcasing this research are planned for June 26 and July 22 in Barrhead. To register, call Kelly or Cindy at 780674-8268.
