If Deere is going to compare themselves to Fendt, They’ll need to shift into high gear.

Some people will tell you the Deere IVT and the Fendt CVT are the same. In fact, some people will tell you nearly anything to keep you from looking at a Fendt. And the differences are significant.

The first difference between Deere’s IVT and the Fendt CVT is the fact that Deere’s still contains clutch packs. That’s because their IVT still has to shift gears within the drive range. And clutches are wear points for transmissions. Also, efficiency in any continuously variable transmission is lowest when most of the power is coming from the hydrostatic system. With a Fendt CVT this is right as the tractor starts to move. In our competitor’s IVT it’s at about 6 mph (the speed you’ll want to plant or pull tillage) and, about 16 mph (the speed you’ll want to transport or cut hay).

Since we invented the modern, efficient, continuously variable transmission for high horsepower tractors, our competition has been grinding gears trying to keep up. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… well… we’re looking forward to being flattered for a long time.

If you’re not already driving Fendt, perhaps it’s time you make the shift to the tractor that doesn’t have to.

Alberta Mission to Turkey Identifies Opportunities in Livestock Genetics and Technologies Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) recently led a mission to Turkey as a followup from an exploratory visit to the market in October 2013, where they identified significant opportunities for Alberta in the areas of sheep and goat genetics, live cattle and cattle genetics, pulses, pet

food and agriculture focused postsecondary education and training.

The Alberta delegation included OC Flock Management, a Bowden based company specializing in small ruminants’ reproductive technologies and genetics, ITS Global, a traceability solution provider to the cattle industry

globally, and Champion Pet Food, an Alberta-based exporter of biologically appropriate pet food made with locally sourced natural ingredients.

“During the mission, the Alberta delegation met with government and industry stakeholders in Ankara, Izmir, Erzurum, Ga-

ziantep and Istanbul,” says Aarij Bashir, trade and relations officer, ARD, Edmonton.

“The primary focus of discussions was around livestock and provided an opportunity for the delegation to promote Alberta’s expertise in animal genetics and livestock traceability systems. The

Nasr says most problems can be avoided by communication between beekeeper and grower. “Many cases could be cited where a grower are not aware of the hazard to bees, how much of tremendous damage could be caused to a large number of colonies,’ says Nasr. “The timing of pesticide application and type of materials of the pest control program could have been modified so that little or no poisoning

Canada is currently negotiating a live cattle health certificate with Turkey that will open the market for Canadian cattle to be exported to Turkey. “At the moment, most producers in Turkey do not differentiate between beef cattle and dairy cattle and there seems to be a high demand for dual purpose breeds,” says Bashir. “However, there are a few progressive groups that are introducing beef genetics in the cattle system. There is a need to educate the producers on the benefits of beef cattle compared to dairy cattle and provide them with proper management skills relevant to beef herds.”

Turkey has a big sheep and goat industry where the herds are suffering from declining productivity. “This presents a great opportunity for Alberta companies to export high quality sheep and goat genetics to the region,” says Bashir. “Sheep and goats are important culturally in Turkey, both as a source of meat and dairy, as well as rural livelihood. The hilly terrain of Turkey and lack of pasture land makes it suitable for small ruminants.”
