Nutrient Beneficial Management Practices Evaluation Project Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) recently released the Nutrient Beneficial Management Practices (BMP) Evaluation Project final report.

“The BMP Project was a sixyear (2006 to 2012) study, and it took about two years to prepare the final report,” says Barry Olson, research scientist, AF, Lethbridge. “The purpose of the project was to evaluate the environmental effectiveness and economic implications of implementing water quality BMPs at the field and watershed scales.”

The study had two main components – a field study and a modelling study. The field study was carried out in the Indianfarm Creek Watershed near Pincher Creek and a portion of the Whelp Creek Watershed west of Lacombe. The modelling study, which was a computer-based program, was used to simulate BMP scenarios for 30-years to see the benefits and costs.

“The BMPs we tested can be placed into three groups - livestock management, field nutrient management, often involving manure, and surface-water management,” says Olson. “We found that almost all of the BMPs were effective in improving the surface-water quality that left the farm. In some cases, nutrient loss in surface water, such as for nitrogen and phosphorus, was significantly reduced.”

Although the study was limited

in the number of BMPs implemented in the actual field study, the computer model allowed researchers to simulate the effects of BMPs throughout the watershed.

“The model showed us that the cumulative effect of BMPs will be measurable sometimes, but not always,” says Olson. “The exciting thing about this model is we can now run BMP implementation scenarios for other watersheds in the province where we do not have the resources to carry out detailed field studies. In fact, this has already been done on a portion of the Red Deer Watershed, which is part of the final report.”

Olson says the study also looked at the economics of using BMPs. “Through our modelling study, we showed that generally there was an economic cost to producers when BMPs were implemented. The economic information is important for determining or developing economic instruments that may encourage the adoption of BMPs as the agricultural industry moves forward.

This also includes funding programs, such as Growing Forward 2, that provides funding that supports the adoption of BMPs for environmental improvement.”

A number of key conclusions and scientific recommendations came out of this study, says Olson.

“This study provides sciencebased information useful in

helping to develop policy and programs targeting environmental outcomes by the agricultural industry. The information is also valuable as we move forward with future research in this area of agricultural management practices and environmental protection.”

Should I Buy Expensive Feed or Custom Feed?

“Lack of moisture curtailed pasture and hay production in many area of Alberta this year,” says Dean Dyck, farm business management specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Stettler. “As a result, feed and hay prices have risen dramatically from a year ago. Producers are faced with either buying expensive feed or moving their livestock to feed if they want to keep ownership and equity in their animals.

Choosing an option depends on the economics of each alternative.”

The first step is to calculate the cost of putting feed into the feed bunk.

This is the sum of the cost to purchase the feed, along with shipping costs, yardage charge on the farm, the opportunity cost of labour for feeding the animals, and shrink and waste.

“For example, if each cow needs about 35 pounds of hay per day to maintain her, it will take about 7,500 pounds or approximately 3.75 tons of hay over 215 days,” says Dyck. “Feeding days are suggested to be longer this coming winter due to a lack of fall grazing opportunities and to give pastures time to recover from lack of moisture. If good quality hay costs about $200 per ton, the total cost of the hay will be $750 per animal. Shipping charges to transport the hay to the farm need to be added. According to AF’s custom rate survey, freight charges are approximately $6 per loaded mile. If hay is picked up 100 miles away, the cost will be $600 per load. Assuming 18 tons per load, the freight cost is $33 per ton or $123 per animal for the 215 days.”

Yardage charges on the farm include the cost of operating equipment, corral cleaning, utilities, and wear and tear on facilities. Using approximately $0.70 per head per day for “at home” yardage, the total cost of hay delivered to the farm is $1,026 per animal

for 215 days.

“This example assumes that there is less than 15 to 20 per cent of wasted hay per day and that the farmer has no opportunity cost for labour,” says Dyck. “That is, if the owner can use the labour to generate alternative income, then the opportunity cost of not feeding cattle must be added to the cost of purchasing and hauling feed.” The second step is to calculate the cost of moving the animals to a custom operator and pay for the feed and care there. This is the sum of shipping the animals to and from the lot, along with the cost of feed at the facility, and the yardage charge by the feeder to care and feed the animals.

If the price of hay is the same at the custom feeder, the cost of feed would be $750 per animal. However, the cost of freight for moving the cattle to and from the feed yard has to be factored in. The average custom rate for hauling cattle is about $5.50 per loaded mile with 50 cows per load. A 100 mile round trip cost will be $22 per head, making the total cost of hay and hauling $772 per head for 215 days.

If the feeder charges $0.85 per head per day in yardage, the total cost will be $954 per head for 215 days, or $72 per head lower than the cost of buying feed.

“These are just examples and you must figure your own costs including the purchase price of feed and the cost of shipping hay and cattle,” says Dyck. “Comparing the two options, if the cost of feed is the same for the producer and the custom feeder, the primary factors in making your decision are the distance and the cost to ship the hay or cattle, the yardage charge, and the amount of feed waste.

If you are considering custom feeding, both parties should agree on a body condition score going into and coming

out of the feed yard as well as a fairly accurate estimate of pregnancy.”

“Saving the most equity in the cows should be the primary goal,” concludes Dyck. “Evaluate your decision based on your risk-bearing ability, market outlook and distance/availability of feed or custom feeding opera-

tions. After considering all the factors, choose the best single or combination of alternatives that will give you the best change at preserving equity.”

By-product Feeds for Sheep Christmas is Coming!

Dry conditions, short supplies of forage, expensive supplements and tight profit margins have many sheep producers looking for alternate feed sources.

“Canola or grain screenings, potato waste, grass seed cleanings or beet pulp are just a few of the by-products that can be used to feed sheep,” says Susan Hosford, sheep industry specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF), Camrose. “By-product feeds become available when a traditional feed ingredient is processed into another product, such as the alfalfa fines from an alfalfa cubing plant. By-products such as brewer’s grain or bakery waste can sometimes be sourced from local food or beverage manufacturing. By-product screenings are produced when grains, legumes, or forage seeds are cleaned.”

Hosford says it is vitally important to know the availability, supply and price of a by-product before incorporating it into a flock feeding program.

“Dry conditions increase competition for feed which makes local availability and price major considerations. Many by-products are available only through contracts and are delivered at times specified by the seller.

Some are only available at certain times of the year.”

In order to utilize these feeds, Hosford says producers will need to know: • their long-term feed requirements, how many days of feed for how many sheep • their ability to handle and store (sometimes large amounts of) these feeds

• how they will store different feeds (i.e. to avoid mould) to maintain quality • how they will feed their sheep for maximum feed quality and minimum waste • the proximity of their farm in relation to the location of the byproduct feed source so they can accurately determine accessibility and cost • how much to order to minimize switching feeds in rations and reduce trucking costs “Before purchasing or feeding any by-product, try to have feeds sampled and tested to determine the nutrient content,” says Hosford. “This is critically important for every new batch whether the by-product is used regularly or is a new feed ingredient. The nutrient and moisture content of byproduct feeds vary dramatically with different loads depending on the supplier, the product itself, processing methods, harvesting methods, the season, the weather and, of course, how it was stored.”

“Use the software to develop rations for each group of sheep in your flock,” adds Hosford. “Be sure you’re feeding the right nutrients, in the right amount to the right sheep – you can’t afford not to.”
