Alberta Approved Farmers' Market . . . a Great Place to Introduce New Products An Alberta Agriculture specialist says that an Alberta approved farmers market is a great place to introduce and get input for new products. “Support of locally made or grown products make it a great place to test and evaluate your product,” says Elaine Stenbraaten, new venture coach, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Fairview. “It can also be a great market where you can benefit from a higher margin than at traditional retail. You also can produce smaller amounts of product than would be required if you chose to wholesale product to a grocery chain. “Some entrepreneurs prefer to stay in the direct market and don’t move beyond farmers markets. Others use this market channel initially and then move forward with the next stage of development in their business.” Stenbraaten says that planning, research and a marketing

strategy are key components in developing a new product. “The first step in product development is research. What need does this product fill? Who is your customer? Who are your competitors with this product? What market is available for this product?” As an example, she says, adding another salsa to the already crowded salsa market may not have much opportunity for success unless it is either sold as least cost product or offers a unique taste or ingredient compared to what else is available. “It is much easier to be the second product in the market than the fifth,” says Stenbraaten. “Sometimes a competitor may have the market tied up and it may be difficult to get retailers to even stock a new product. Shelf space is purchased in some retail areas and can be quite expensive. So having a strategy for where to sell the product and

what kind of places to place it can be keys to success. “The more you know about your product and the market you’ll sell it in the less costly mistakes you’ll make. It will save you money and can save your business.” Market testing is one strategy that businesses use when developing new products. “This is where an Alberta approved farmers’ market can be a huge help,” she notes “You think you know a considerable amount about your product. Now verify it. This can be done by market testing it. How is this done? Well you can choose to develop a test amount of product and sell it in a smaller market or region that you intend the product to go. Sales of the product and the input from your customers will provide information that you can tweak the product if necessary. For instance, a dessert manufacturer discovered that Canadians prefer

a less sweet dessert than Americans do. Adjusting the product to the preferences of the customers in the market provide more po-

Safe Play Areas for Harvest Safety Creating a safe play area can help protect children during the busy harvest season. “Farming parents face a real dilemma when it comes to juggling family life with the time constraints of harvest,” says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Grande Prairie. “Children love to be in the centre of the action and as parents it makes us proud to see our children interested in farming. However, until we can wave a magic wand and child-proof the farm, it’s just safer to keep the kids away from all the action.” Working with the Alberta Farm Safety Program, Peterson hears of the ‘close calls’ Alberta producers have each year, often involving children and agricultural machinery, grain, dug-outs or livestock. “My heart breaks each time I heard of a serious farm injury or fatality, especially when it involves a child,” she says. “There are lots of options that would keep children safely away from an active farm site – it just takes a little planning and commitment.” Peterson says there are many ways parents can ensure their

childrens’ safety during harvest season. She’s heard of a few families who share childcare among several farms. One family drops off their two boys at the local sports day camp before heading to the field. Another family has a tradition of sending their children to visit with their grandparents while the bulk of the harvesting is done. Another option is to create a safe play area on the farm. “While the concept of child-proofing a farm is hard to fathom, creating a safe play area is much more feasible,” says Petersen. After exploring the other alternatives, Peterson decided that creating a safe play area seemed the best option for her. “My mother and I decided that focusing on a play area at the family farm was our goal this year. It’s been relatively inexpensive and is providing me with an easy way to keep my children safe on the farm site.” Peterson’s mother took the lead on setting up the play area, stating that it was much easier than she anticipated. She selected an area along the front of the house, set up temporary

snow fencing to mark the boundaries and inflated a bouncy play castle. Peterson’s mother also stocked the house with plenty of age-appropriate activities, making it easy for her to keep Peterson’s children busy. “My kids were so excited to have their very own place to play outside that it was hard to get them to come inside,” says Peterson. Another perk Peterson noted was that the children could still catch glimpses of the machinery and trucks coming and going. “You can still have kids around the farm and inspire their agricultural side without putting them in harm’s way. At the end of the day, the harvest is in and the kids are safe. Everyone is happy!” Peterson feels so passionately about keeping kids safe on the farm that she is in the midst of producing a Creating Safe Play Areas resource that will soon be available to parents.
