Understanding Soil Variability to Utilize Variable Rate Fertilizer Technology Variable rate fertilization (VRF) has the potential to improve economic crop returns by optimizing fertilizer efficiency and reducing environmental impacts such as nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions associated with fertilizer use.

VRF is technically feasible with direct seeding and fertilizer equipment available to Alberta farmers, but research is needed on how to develop field-specific fertilizer prescriptions.

A VRF research project, led by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) and funded by the Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund, Alberta Innovates BioSolutions and Alberta Canola Producers Commission, is currently underway.

The project outcomes will hopefully assist farmers and industry agronomists to develop effective field-specific, science-based fertilizer prescription maps in the future.

“To make optimum use of VRF technology we must understand how soil physical and chemical characteristics and plant available soil nutrients vary with landscape position,” says Ross McKenzie, agronomy research scientist with ARD. “We must also understand how crops respond to nitrogen (N) and other fertilizers over changing landscapes. It is also important to understand the consistency of crop responses from year to year with variable environmental conditions.”

Alberta has approximately 25

million acres of annually seeded crop land. Every field is unique.

This means simple and effective methods are required for producers and crop advisors to develop appropriate field specific fertilizer prescription maps.

“Crop yield maps are easily generated from on-board yield monitoring software on most new combines, but crop yield often does not correlate well with fertilizer response,” says Mike Bevans, agriculture engineer with ARD. “This is because crop response is strongly influenced by other physical and chemical soil factors as well as environmental factors such as weather.”

Identifying “field management zones” within a field is a critical step when shifting from uniform

field management to the site-specific management required to optimize VRF. “The adoption of ‘field management’ zones in Western Canada has been very slow due to limited field research and the complexities of identifying unique field management zones,” says McKenzie. “To address this knowledge and practice deficiency, a team of ARD researchers are conducting field research trials.”

“The objective of this project is to determine the best approach to develop VFP fertilizer prescription maps based on detailed evaluation of fertilizer response in fields with varying topography,” says Bevans.

In 2011, five fields were intensively studied. Research sites were located on an irrigated field

near Lethbridge and on dryland fields in the Lethbridge, Magrath and Claresholm areas as well near Vegreville. At each site a sample strip of land was selected with the cooperating farmer.

Twelve to 16 bench mark sites were selected in each field and soil samples were taken from each bench mark site to evaluate soil fertility, physical, chemical and topographical properties/characteristics. Soil samples were analyzed for plant available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, and micronutrients. Soils were also analyzed for sand, silt and clay content, salt levels, soil organic matter and pH. Along the entire transect in each field, six N fertilizer treatments from 0 to 150 kg/ha rates were applied, urea

and ESN fertilizers were compared, and treatments of phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and micronutrients were applied.

The crop grown on the transect strip was the same grown by the farmer each year. Crop yield and grain quality characteristics were then determined for all fertilizer treatments at all bench mark locations. Yield maps and topography maps were also generated for each field.

The initial results of the research project, including the crop response to various fertilizer treatments will be presented and discussed at the Agronomy Update conference in Red Deer on January 17 and 18, 2011. The study will continue in 2012 and 2013.

Business Opportunity Support Available for Producers and New Farmers Alberta’s agriculture producers are encouraged to take advantage of the Growing Forward business opportunity program to help transform existing opera-

tions or pursue new ventures to capitalize on changes in the marketplace and consumer demands.

The business opportunity

grant program is targeted at Alberta’s primary agriculture producers and producer groups adapting their business to meet changing market and consumer

demands. New entrants to the industry starting up a primary production business venture are also eligible.

The grants support contracting services that contribute to making informed and calculated business decisions to take a new business direction. Examples of eligible expenses include opportunity assessments, market research, business management consulting or coaching for a new direction, business and marketing plans, and mentoring for developing or diversifying a farming operation.

Business opportunity applications are supported on a costshared basis. Grants cover 75 per cent of eligible expenses for approved activities and applicants cover 25 per cent, with grants awarded up to a maximum of $30,000 per applicant.

Business opportunity grants are issued on a first-come, firstserved basis, as per program terms and conditions and limited funding. Producers are encouraged to apply soon to take advantage of the program.

Applicants must first be registered with Alberta’s Growing For-

ward initiative, then contact an Agriculture and Rural Development new venture specialist to submit a program application and budget that outlines how the grant will help their business respond to market demands.

The Cattle Business Managing the Opportunity For the second year in a row, North American beef producers are experiencing high cattle prices. An increase in export demand, leaves cattle markets looking strong for beef producers well into the future.

The drought in key cattle areas of the United States has meant another year of falling U.S. cattle numbers. Canadian and U.S. cow herd liquidation over the past years has led to shrinking feeder cattle supplies all across North America.

“All of this works to create a healthy market for North American cattle,” says Grant Lastiwka, grazing/forage/beef specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD).

Other industry experts agree.

According to Randy Blach, executive vice president of CattleFax, “…cattle prices are going to get higher…."

In order to manage the current opportunities in the cattle business, producers also need to be aware of the risks associated with a favorable market. In the last Cattlemen magazine Debbie McMillan, beef market analyst, wrote, “along with this optimism, the biggest risks to the market are the Canadian dollar uncertainty and the instability of global markets.” Beef producer understanding and management of opportunities and risks, are going to be the keys to their potential profits and profit sustainability in the current market.

“The Alberta beef producer is never typical,” says Lastiwka.

“Each operation has different advantages and disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses.

These individual differences are the reason each beef producer needs to consider and evaluate their own operation.” After this analysis is complete, “unique” decisions, strategies, and actions can be wisely carried out for the most successful outcomes.

As part of the analysis, it is important to break down the “cattle businesses” you are in. Within every cattle operation are a number of enterprises (ie. cow/calf to weaning, hay or silage, winter feed/grazing systems, etc.). Each adds to the bottom line or takes away from it. Some have to be done to continue, others may not.

Evaluating each enterprise on their cost and returns is a crucial step. By knowing which enterprise or potential “profit centre” is

making or losing money, changes can be prioritized, and alternatives considered.

After this detailed evaluation process, managers who want to profit from current beef industry opportunities have well-researched, diverse options on which to base their decision-making. Some management questions beef producers may want to ask themselves include: • Should we maintain cow numbers, expand, or capture equity by selling out at a high price?

• If expanding, should the calving season be later so more cows can be calved easier?

• Should heifer replacements be retained, bought, or developed and sold?

• Can backgrounded calves be economically retained through all or part of the winter?

• If calves are retained what risk tools are available to ensure a price in advance?

• If costs are too high to background calves in traditional ways, are alternatives available with lower yardage costs?

• What forage quality is needed, and from what forage type, to reduce high cost grain use in background rations?

• What pasture types give the greatest productivity per acre for yearlings?

• What pasture management systems create the lowest risk and greatest pounds of beef/acre?

• Instead of ownership, is custom grazing of yearlings the best profit generator?

Producers interested in learning more about management decisions to manage the opportunities and risks in the beef business are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming CowCalfenomics 2011 workshops being held across the province.

Sessions are scheduled for: December 5 in Grande Prairie; December 6 in Westlock; and, December 7 in Bonnyville.
