MABAIN
CENTER FOR BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED
PROJECT BRIEF
Mabain Center takes its inspiration from the blindness point. It is a place where blind and visually impaired can learn how to overcome the social and psychological effects to get back to their life. Mabain center aims to help the visually disabled to get healing through the psychological, educational, training, social guidance and career counseling. Located in north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in Al-khalidiyah district, overlooking King Abdulaziz Road from the western side and Prince saud alfaisal street from the south. With a total area of 24,500 SQM.
FACADE SYSTEM The aim is simple, safe and user friendly building, which serves the life of the blind. Most of the corridors get natural light, which helps the orientation of the blinds. The strong light transmission is reduced by the perforated metal sheets. These sheets are placed in front of the large glass cube and work as Double skin faรงade. The perforation is formed from braille subtitles, with the following words: knowldge, wisdom and in sight.

Juror communt; Dr. Abdelmoniem ElShorbagy: “ The drafting organization is interesting and will say it is elegant and practical. In terms of the plans, it is very well designed. What I like in your project, that I can feel the integration between than plan and the mass, meaning that the irregular shapes of your plans are expressed very well in the mass itself, so when you look at the project, we can see the harmony between the outline of the plan and the skyline of the building, which is very successful.” Dr. Rahef Maddah: “Thank you so much for the project. I like the project, I like the way you presented the project, the way you describe everything and prefer to it in the model. Oh my gad! This is the way it should be done. I like that you understand the project, and the graphics how I can say it, it blows my mind I like it, I like everything, the whole package I like it. It’s a complete artificial project; it’s very professional. You described the project very professionally and for the nonprofessional, you can sell this product easily. Very well done. “

STRUCTURE SYSTEMS
The mass is oriented towards the north side, as the north facade is the least facade that receives sun radiation. Thus, making it suitable to have large openings.
Three entrances in the building; main which is oriented to the northeast direction and is overlooking the main street (AlMadinah), the secondary for easy access to the building from the parking, and the third entrance is for the employees.
The showrooms are located on the ground and the first floor to highlight their importance and take advantage of the north direction. The services were placed underground so its noises would not cause a disturbance.
A large aluminum cladding is added at important spaces in the building to emphasize on their importance and to work as an active shading device for the interior space.
The way of which this building was designed makes some places get shaded without the need of using any shading devices. Thus, through the different heights of the masses, some parts were shaded by the masses that are above them.
One of the project challenges was to create wide openings and design them in a way that does not weaken its beauty. Thus, the decision was to use the spider system.
Double tee and portal frame structure systems applied to the building to create large spaces without the disturbance of columns.

Juror comment; Arch. Abdulaziz Albarrak: “This is amazing work, the level of what I am seeing here right now is something with potential and minor changes, that could be actually executed. However, you kept it simple and unique. The graphics are great; you have done a concept based on ‘Jeep’; their cars are rough, and the building reflected that. The sections well designed, illustrated, and very neat. I like it very much. “
