THE BARBICAN ESTATE

TheBarbicanEstateisaresidentialestatebuiltduringthe1960sandthe1970sintheCityofLondon, in an area once devastated byWorldWar II bombings and today densely populated by financial institutions.Itcontains,orisadjacentto,theBarbicanArtsCentre,theMuseumofLondon,theGuildhallSchoolofMusicandDrama,theBarbicanpubliclibrary,theCityofLondonSchoolforGirlsand aYMCA (now closed [1, forming the Barbican Complex.The complex is a prominent example of BritishbrutalistarchitectureandisGradeIIlistedasawhole[]withtheexceptionofthelateMiltonCourt. MiltonCourtoncecontainedafirestation,medicalfacilitiesandsomeflatsandwasdemolishedto allowtheconstructionofanewapartmentcomplexwhichalsocontainsadditionalfacilitiesforthe Guildhall School of Music and Drama. POST-WAR DEVELOPMENT Theestatewasbuiltbetween1965and1976,ona35-acre(14ha)site that had been bombed inWorldWar II.The complex was designed byarchitectsChamberlin,PowellandBon,whosefirstworkwasthe ground-breakingGoldenLaneEstateimmediatelynorthoftheBarbican.Theestateof40acres(16ha)wasofficiallyopenedin1969andis nowhometoaround4,000peoplelivingin2,014flats.[Theflatsreflect thewidespreaduseinBritaininthe1960sand1970sofconcreteasthe visible face of the building.

The estate has been estimated to stand for a futher 130 years.

RESIDENTS Theresidentialestateconsistsof13terraceblocks,groupedarounda lake and green squares.The main buildings rise up to seven floors aboveapodiumlevel,whichlinksallthefacilitiesintheBarbican,providingapedestrianrouteabovestreetlevel.Somemaisonettesarebuilt intothepodiumstructure.Thereisnovehicularaccesswithintheestate,buttherearesomecarparksattheperipheryoftheestate.Public carparksarelocatedwithintheBarbicanCentre.Theestatewasbuilt between1965and1976,ona35-acre(14ha)sitethathadbeenbombed inWorldWarII.ThecomplexwasdesignedbyarchitectsChamberlin, PowellandBon,whosefirstworkwastheground-breakingGolden LaneEstateimmediatelynorthoftheBarbican.Theestateof40acres (16ha)wasofficiallyopenedin1969andisnowhometoaround4,000 peoplelivingin2,014flats.[TheflatsreflectthewidespreaduseinBritain inthe1960sand1970sofconcreteasthevisiblefaceofthebuilding.
