Continued from Page 2 Tears started flowing down my face, nurses were coming in to give me a hug, and Anden was asking in his sweet little voice, “What’s wrong daddy? Why are you crying?” Quickly I tried pulling myself together to call Jenny and the rest of the family to give them the devastating news. Unfortunately, this is when a medical background is not your friend because all I could do was think the worse. A few short hours later we were accepted to U of M children’s hospital. Due to a huge snowstorm, there were no helicopters or ambulances available. Dr. Clayton called down to U of M and explained to the doctor that this child’s dad would be bringing him down with IVs attached and if there were any signs of seizures due to the tumor growing at a rapid rate he would pull over to the nearest hospital. Five hours later in the early morning of Wednesday, December 3rd we arrived and were quickly admitted to the ICU. Sometime in the late morning, we were greeted by an amazing doctor named Cormac Maher. In his calm demeanor, he explained to us that Anden has a CEREBELLAR PILOSYSTIC ASTROCYSTOMA which is a cancerous tumor inside a sac

on his cerebellum. He explained that his plan was to take Anden to surgery on Friday morning to remove the tumor. After the surgery, he would be able to give us more specifics of the next steps. He did share with us that he sees these types of tumors each month and typically children do really well and that chemo or radiation are usually not needed. On Friday, December 5th at 7:20 am paperwork was signed for surgery. Ten hours later, Anden came out of surgery and Dr. Maher gave us the wonderful news that Anden was quite a trooper and he was confident he was able to remove the tumor. After surgery, we prayed that Anden would gain back his movement, balance, speech, and there would be little to no side effects from the surgery on his brain. Slowly but surely he started making progress and two short days later Anden was discharged from the hospital. We started out with two-week check-ups that then lead to every 3 months, then 6 months, and then once a year. After onemonth post-surgery, Anden was back to being a very active young boy. In the summer of 2019, we got the best news ever which was Anden no longer needs to have any follow-up cat scans due to no recurrence of the tumor.

Caregiver support resources As part of our commitment to support family members and friends providing care to loved ones with cancer, the American Cancer Society developed the Caregiver Resource Guide (cancer.org/caregiverguide). In addition to information about the caregiving process and what to expect with a cancer diagnosis and its treatment, this tool focuses on caregiver self-care, communication, coping, and caregiver resources. Another helpful resource is our Caregiver Support Video Series (cancer.org/ caregivervideos), which provides educational support to caregivers as they assist with everyday needs of loved ones and provides self-care techniques to improve their own quality of life.

Shelly Budnik - Cancer Survivor to Caregiver

Hi My name is Shelly Budnik, I thought August of 1999 was going to bring a new beginning. I just graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with my Occupational Therapy degree. I was ready to face the real world. I would pass that board exam, find that first OT job, and life would be bliss.

Coincidentally, I was 23, feeling tired, bloated, “just off”. Occasional indigestion, rib pain, back pain, a fat belly had me “wondering” but not alarmed. My mom would make a weekly comment, “something is not right.” “you need to get checked over. It was November 28 when we made an emergency room visit, at her insistence. The staff were very concerned at the size of my abdomen and quickly recognized that I was severely anemic. After 5 thorough tests, we came to understand that

would slip away. I was scared for what each week would bring. We had amazing support from family and friends, and although people really did not know what to say or do- we knew they held us close. Through all of this, I learned the value of a brotherhood of close family and friends. I knew Jim would fight until he could fight no more. I am a believer that man versus science and “what matters are the life in your years not the years in your life” I saw how people loved Jim and I admire the way they sacrificed time to be with us in his final days. I know there are many support groups locally but for me, I have had bountiful family and friends that have carried me through. For anyone struggling, just look at those around you. Guaranteed, they want to help, just let them in. Shelly Budnik, caregiver

Facts and Figures: The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is one of the world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising events to save lives from cancer. For over 35 years, communities across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and to fight back for lifesaving change. Funds raised through Relay For Life directly support research, education, advocacy, and services for cancer patients and their families. Relay For Life is a movement, a community of like-minded survivors, caregivers, local citizens, volunteers, and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer and own the power to make that change. Our community may be connecting in different ways right now, but our passion to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer is unchanged.

Relay For Life is community-based and volunteer-driven. Communities use their creativity to raise cancer-fighting dollars to support the American Cancer Society and celebrate virtually or in person to honor survivors and caregivers as well as remember those we’ve lost to the disease.
