// PROBLEM WITH WIRELESS CHARGERS Problems with Wireless Charging -

• They’re way too big, • It has to be plugged into some sort of port to be charged, have battery? • Only has up to one wireless charging pads, • Since they’re big they can be quite tedious to take outside, make them portable? • They keep slipping off, • No adequate sizing for other type of phones, • Cant have other devices being charged, only phones, why don’t have headphones?

Who are best suited for this type of product? (demographic) –

• Teenagers, ages through 12 – 18 • Adults (university students), 18 – 25

• Adults, (more into technology), 25 – 35

Some solutions for these problems –

• Make the overall design compact, • Have more than one wireless pads, by making a design that is suited for other areas? home, outside, train? • Have some sort of design that adequately fits in sizing, make the length a bit bigger? • Have room to charge other products, different type of surfaces and angles for other products? • Have some sort of magnet, or sides that will keep it in place, perhaps a silicone adjustable part? • Wireless battery charged so you don’t have to use some sort of cable outside

// WHAT COULD I PERHAPS INCLUDE? Wireless Charging - Ideas

I’m thinking about creating 4 – 6 design ideas that are necessary for me to get a full range of ideas into wireless charging, his exploration process will help me adequately pick out an initial design. I’ll ask a range of clients within that age range and ask them “out all these design ideas, which one do you like the most, and would think to use on a daily” and other sorts of relevant questions etc. The design Ideas I want to include to get a better understanding and exploration of multiple design elements –

• Design 01 – Have a wireless charger which is suited for home, almost like a wireless charger for the whole family or solely for one person with many devices, those devices would include phones, tablets, headphones, earphones and watches. This wireless charger will be placed in your home, more preferably on your desk or any table for home purposes, this design will be appropriate for teenagers – adults. • Design 02 – A portable wireless charger, when I mean by having it portable, meaning the design have can have a lot of space, whilst remaining compact, perhaps a design that is foldable and folds into itself to construct a wireless pad that as all the properties of a normal one, whilst still including some aspects of my design, that being earphones, tablets etc. This design would be perfectly suited for transportation or taking it outside with you, that means you’ll have to have some sort of battery charged within it to keep it working. This design is more towards Adults in university and perhaps teenagers? • Design 03 – Have another design for wireless charger on transportation, but this time make it some sort of desk design that connects onto… lets say at the back of the seat on a bus, or train? Or have a design that connects onto some sort of handle on a train without some sort of desk provided at your seat. This design will be more appropriate for university students – adults age 25 – 35 and above. This design in particular would be superb for those who are constantly travelling and are in need of some sort of comfortable, easy to use desk? • Design 04 – Have a wireless charging lamp design which luminates your whole room instead of having a clunky, big lamp which takes up one whole socket. Some people don’t have the necessary space on their desk to do their work, a lamp design which is compact, and also has wireless abilities is a two in one. You’ll have your phone right in-front of you for easy access, and that it being small, it wouldn’t take up that much space. This design will be adequate for those teenagers – and perhaps any age range who are looking to have some sort of lamp, wireless design. These are all the design ideas I want to primarily focus on, I will indeed make a few changes to it and make a few design ideas if needed to explore more into. What I want to finally do a the end of these designs, I want to talk to some people and interview them about these products who are within the age rating, and ask them, what final design idea do they want to see the most, from there onwards, I’ll develop it further and refine to become a final, full fledged model. For the product problems, I’ll be using data from existing wireless charging and making my own interpretations and figuring out the flaws, with that I’ll focus more on a client research and see what they most preferably want, using the designs I have.

// DESIGN CONCEPTS Showcasing different elevations of a wireless charger phone holder. This will give me an interpretation of a wireless charger holder,

drawings of wireless charger holders, these are the basic ideas of wireless chargers and to construct a few designs with different perspectives. The designs are simple and have smooth surfaces and are angled to be used as an appropriate wireless charger holder, these idea concepts are a first glance at what wireless chargers can be made into, and develop into something much better.

// DESIGN CONCEPTS

Here are some more pencil drawings, here there different type of shapes which is relevant in a wireless charger holder. The designs a lot more abstract, by including unique and non-appropriate shapes which doesn’t physically work on a wireless charger, but with this you can create an unique and interesting overall design. Here I made another concept design of a wireless charger, but this time more chaotic and unique. Using the elements of my brainstorming I constructed a design which resembles a sharp object, but can be configured into a wireless charger holder. This will help inspire me to develop and further develop a good model. In this particular drawing I decided to use a pen to create the overall design, this helped me get confident in my pen work. this is quite an abstract abnormal drawing which doesn’t have any relevancy to the wireless holder but by developing this I could make this into something unique, but overall, this could be used as inspiration if needed.

// BRIEF Phones are the most significant piece of technology you carry with you on a daily basis; they enable you to save data, take photos, communicate, record, obtain knowledge or information, compute and store important files, essentially everything you need in the palm of your hand. And, in order to keep these excellent pieces of technology running, is that they must be equipped with a charging cable and, more often than not, a charging brick in most places. My idea is to make wireless charging pads for any technological device that supports it. I primarily want these charging pads to be on public transportation, and I’ll be exploring for ways to incorporate them into various locations, such as fast-food restaurants. I'll also look at ways to improve the efficiency of the wireless charging pads, such as putting more devices on a single pad or having them stick to the wall. Furthermore, I will try to implement these wireless charging pads on trains, specifically ones that travel long distances, buses, and other arbitrary infrastructures that would have high density of people and add normal cables for other important items such as laptops or phones which does not support wireless charging.

// SPECIFICATION - Main theme will be minimalism, with a touch of geometry, - Be able to establish more than two devices on a wireless pad, - Have cables included for other devices which doesn’t have the capability to be wireless, i.e. an old phone/tablet or a laptop, - Different types of wireless chargers, i.e. a wireless charging pad which is right on top of the flat wireless pad, - Wireless chargers in public spaces like a restaurant, train stations, or even pavilions, - Have wireless charging on transportation, i.e. a train that travels long distances, the wireless charger would be included on your desk/table, or be inside of it, - Should be constructed in a way which it is difficult to break, or even steal (which happens quite often),

.03

// INSPIRATION / IDEAS

Using these will have a huge impact in my making of wireless chargers, I believe seeing these already made wireless chargers will make sure that I won’t have the exact design in mind, and in the end, making it completely different and flawless.

// WIRELESS CHARGER

// WIRELESS CHARGER A wireless charger is made up of coiled wires around a bar magnet, i.e., an inductor. Once an electric current passes through the wires, an electromagnetic field is created around the magnet, helping transfer a charge. Wireless charging has also been transformed thanks to Qi wireless technology. One of the concerns with wireless chargers was that they would only charge a phone and not any other foreign items that could fall on the charger, such as coins and pens. Phones now feature Qi wireless technology to address this. A wireless charging station communicates with a tiny receiver in a phone, and the charging pad basically “asks” the device whether it is a QI receiver

// CHARGING PADS

0 2. Charging bowls: An emerging technology, charging bowls rely on resonant electromagnetic charging (i.e., the energy is ‘tunnelled’ through coils rather than spread from one primary direction) 0 3. Uncoupled RF wireless charging: Charge is transmitted via radio frequency, so no charging plates are needed. This technology is still in the making.

// Secondary Research

// NAOTA FUKASAWA These lightbulbs feature a smooth oval form with a flat top, which makes it ideal for placing a phone or any-other technological device on top. The other trapezium shape also has a flat top but a much better shaped form, this will prevent any surface sliding when placing a device on top. The entire lightbulb illuminates from the whole shell, this makes it perfect to add other colours for example to determine whether the device is charging or if not.

This design is rather simple, or minimalistic. What I particularly like about this design is the use of the curvature, and how I would implement this with my other theme, geometry. I think with this I could create a rather complex design, unique design with a strong build that would meet my specification requirements.

// EXPERIMENTATION Here I will be conducting more research and start experimenting with multiple shapes and designs to configure out a final design aspect. This will help me understand more about the shape, manipulate the shape, and use it in various ways to create an attractive wireless charge.

Here I made some circle sketches, the thicker it gets the thicker the border gets. This is all arbitrary, and I could manipulate it to my advantage to suit my product in mind.

Here are some sketch-up models of all the research I conducted. These are a finalised model of everything here.

.07

Here I made the circle imbedded into the block, so it could be a nice support for a wireless headphone case.

As you can see I included a flat top which would be more suitable for a wireless charger, and different various of the bottom portion.

// HIROAKI SUZUKI I particularly like the geometry utilised on this chair; It’s meant to be comfortable, uses a significant less amount of materials, and is built to be durable. Not to mention it has the minimalist theme going on with it. Having less detail, but still being unique and geometric.

This is a breakdown of the design, I looked at key elements of the design that I liked in particular. I also made some aspirational designs out of the overall designs and different angles to show. So far I looked at the main theme of the design which appears to be geometry, but it isn’t as sophisticated as it may seem, rather simple entirely.

Here I’ve created a sketch-up model from the following research that I’ve conducted. As you can see it’s very complicated and has a similar outcome to the model above. This will be used as inspiration for my final model.

Here are some geometric shapes, as you can see with every shape I started making them more and more complicated. With this I configured out a desired shape for my wireless charger, perhaps going to use these techniques in my final model to create an intricate and efficient design.

These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

These are first initial shape sketches that I made from my basic research.

Further developed models,

After making my quick sketches based on the research that I’ve conducted, I made some official drawings of less geometric drawings that are more refined showcasing different angles. I want to fuse both elements to make on final design, and this is where I will start by using my design as inspiration.

// WHALE Here I’m going to be using a whale as primary research. I’m going to be making geometry out of the whale and picking elements that I find attractive to be using in my final design.

Here is quick sketch determining whether to use triangles or rectangles, I would say that the rectangle fits pretty well, but instead I will go for the more appropriate triangular shape because of how accurate it is.

Here I went over random whales and then put triangular shapes within them to create this. I also then used this as inspiration to create more shapes that are similar in a form of a whale.

Here I made some random curved/oval sketches based on the banana above, but its more fitting my design idea.

After looking at the banana I made some curved sketch-ups which is similar to a banana. Here you can see I made multiple models that in different angles and the way it curves, I believe having this research

This is much more refined model by using the primary research that I’ve conducted.

After researching on more content, I made a few shapes. These shapes are randomly drawn with inspiration taken from my research so far currently, as you can see I tried many different type of designs that would be appropriate for a wireless charger, these are still technically sketches which I’m going to further develop to create 3 initial designs,

These are first initial shape sketches that I made from my basic research.

And finally, this are my final designs that I made using the already developed designs above. Here you can see they’re more fitting for a wireless charger, but one thing is that they don’t seem my specification of have more than two devices, also including a wireless charging pad, this will be done with development further on.

Card Models/ New Ideas/ Design Development/ Further Development/ Cardboard Models/…

// Further Development

Here is a further developed page of designs that I picked from the previous slides. What I’m doing here is analysing and showcasing the development I made that would improve the quality of the product.

01. In my model one I went for a more basic approach, but with this basic approach, it has everything included in the specification which I required to make my wireless charger. It has space for a phone, tablet and any other accessories. Also in the front has just enough space for a wireless headphone. I believe this design is more client attractive as it is pretty simple and self explanatory to use, what I could say is that I would have more development on it to make it even more efficient and reliable when using quite a hectic amount of accessories which would included a laptop charger, but also having separate hole for the charger of your choice.

02.

In my second model, I went and duplicated the front part 3 times and made this design. It has everything to offer plus additional space for another device, also a very convenient place to place your wireless headphones on, and with added surface area for more comfortability as it isn’t tilt on an angle. Besides, this design also has very basic approach but it well is attractive, I could possibly make the holders a bit taller and just keep the overall design. Also stated in my model one, I would also like to include a separate hole for a charger of your choice.

03. In my third and final model that I picked out, this is the most unique out of all the other models that I made, because it has a quite of an unusual shape seems not appropriate, taken in consideration of a wireless charger. It has additional space for other devices underneath, and on the top, so many devices can be charged and is quite a suitable and easy to hold shape. What I think I could improve is making it more attractive as it seems to be quite offputting. And could make the ends more safer for putting on devices so they won’t just slip off, and the same for model one and two, separate charger.

After gathering the primary research, I printed the pictures out and then cut out the parts that I liked and then combined them together to create random designs.

I then placed and taped the designs that I liked on a black cartridge printing paper – this paper allows you trace around it underneath a white piece of paper to reveal a design. After doing this process with a black-point pen multiple times I created these 3 singular designs that I made.

01.

02.

03.

Here are the designs that I made, it seems quite difficult to imagine it being a wireless charger design, so this will be something challenging. To create a wireless charger out of something that seems quite literally impossible.

.25

// New Designs

Here I made a few models using the primary research provided, also basically developing it from the previous slide.

Here are developed versions of my models, you can see how I changed the appearance and made it overall different compared to the original drawing.

01. Here is a fully developed drawing of my model one, as you can see I made it very compatible, it has so much additional space, including the triangle in the middle as-well.

02.

In this developed model you can see how I made it compatible for devices such as a phone and tablet usable on this type of shape.

03. Here I made it more of a cone shape, completely changing the overall appearance but still keeping the same function. This is more simple and easy to understand on how to use.

.26

Foam Models

Primary Research/ New Designs/ Foam Models/ Combining/ Secondary Research/ Design Ideas/…

This is showcasing my finalised foam model designs,

01. Analysis: Model 01. Here you can see I made it much safer by adding a little ledge which will secure the device in place, I also have made the right part more flatter so it can be useable for tablets and other wirelesses charged accessories, and have the middle part for wireless headphones or headsets. This overall design has a nice appearance, and could add led lights to enhance it even more, but yet it’s still an unfinished model idea as it seems quite bizarre and chaotic.

02.

Analysis: Model 02. In this deign the roof is it’s main component and main attraction. The roof is very functional by having your phones and tablets on top securely placed. And has space for the bottom part for placing your phone as well. This design itself is very unique and hard to comprehend on a wireless charger, but overall it fits. To add on that I would also like to add something more to it. Add led lights so it can be used as a lamp (multifunctional).

03. Analysis: Model 03. In this deign I went for a more of a cone approach to it, it seems that this wouldn't be the best option, so I would have to further develop this, but overall the design is self explanatory. Overall I would like to further develop this and improve the bottom, and if not, I will create new ideas using both my previous final design and this to make a final approach to all of this.

Here I decided to combine my cardboard models with my foam models to create new and final designs, here you can see I created multiple different designs which have similarity to both my other models, but are also completely different, new and refreshing for me to use and finalise.

After creating all those designs on top, I made another design on that which combines all of those ideas into one to create this design here. Although Its apparent that it is very different, but it has some aspects which still connect. This design is very accurate and possible, and just makes sense.

I made some more drawings using the primary research that I used, here you can see I made similar designs shaped of a car light and even more bizarre. I also decided to make these more complex by adding other forms of research used like my secondary on smooth curved shapes. With these designs I’m thinking about further developing, and then analysing whether I’ll use this design or the other.

I personally like the left side more as I can imagine it fitting perfectly with a phone and other devices on top.

With these other designs successfully made, I decided to make an another design using some of these elements, but making it more simpler so it could fit comfortably with phones and other devices sitting on top. I would have to decide whether to use more of a curve approach or more harsh.

.35

Overall, I will need to do some more research finding out what will suit it better.

// AUDI Here I thought about researching about an Audi, main reason being because of it’s unique shape how it combines both abstract and smooth themes to combine and make a car.

Here I made some developed models, you can see how I change the design in process, and pick out parts that I like of the structure interesting. This overall shape is very similar to my car light research and would be beneficial if I would add this for further added research to support this idea. As you can see in this developed piece I made more of a car top but it seems to have it’s own unique shape and form with more curvature sides rather than linear.

Here I then made some geometric shapes out of the car, with different triangular structures in it. After that I decided to test this on a bigger object, and did on a almost rock like shape, and results are fairly similar to be used.

This slide will be covering and basically analyzing the designs I picked. Going over what should be correct – what works and not etc. and finally, what to improve that could enhance the overall design.

Design 01.

Reasonings to why I picked this design was because of its simplicity. As you already know, my main theme of this project is minimalism, and with (a hint) of geometric. This design perfectly puts that into specification, obviously, I will make some changes during this analysis to further make it work with a wireless charger, and make sure all electronic devices fit smoothly. Overall, this design fits very well into my specification, and this analysis will help further support it.

Materials. = Plastic

With this design, it would rather be more appropriate to use plastic as this design has a lot of curves and smooth corners, with the help of sanding equipment, I could easily replicate this design if I chose it. Also, to add on, I would anyways have to create a 3-D print-out if I’m making this model, so the model is likely to an accurate representation. Pros/ - Shape is distinct, and is smooth (no safety hazards), - Has enough space, also additional space for a headset,

.39

- Easy to handle and use, - Comfortable to hold,

Cons/ - Difficult shape to understand,

Reasonings to why I picked this design was because of its versatility. If you wanted to, you could put it down, or put it up if you have no space in your house for that reason. Another reason being its slot in design, I could basically just put my phone in the slot, and it would charge without any trouble, hopefully this analysis will further support it and see where I could improve. Overall, this design has some-what similarities to my specification, but I’ll see what works best in this case.

Pros/ - The shape is smooth and as no safety hazards,

Materials/ = Plastic

- The interior is also smooth, which is comfortable for This design has quite an unusual shape, and many devices, it would be quite difficult using materials - Versatile, such as wood to make this, so instead I would rather 3-D print and smoothen it out.

Cons/ - Not enough spaces which would meet my specification, - Heavy, - Big,

Design 3.

Reasonings to why I picked this design because of how lightweight it appears, having very thin borders, and how it fits in-between with minimalism and with a hint of geometric. This design has a lot of additional space for other wireless charging electronics and is very simple to use. Overall, this design is very simple, also has some safety hazards, as it appears to be sharp on the ends of the top.

Pros/

Materials/ = Wood

.41

Cons/

Since this design is going to be quite lightweight, I’ll be obviously be using a much lightweight wood.

- Simple to understand and use,

- Has a sharp shape which is a safety hazard,

- Has additional space for other things such as wireless headphones,

- Difficult to hold,

The design is quite harsh, considering that, it would be more appropriate to use wood.

- Lightweight

// Ergonomics

Ergonomics is a scientific discipline that studies the interactions between humans and other system elements, as well as a profession that uses theory, concepts, data, and methods to design in order to improve human well-being and overall system performance. Basic ergonomics; work in a neutral position, decrease the need for excessive force, keep materials within easy to reach, work at a proper height, reduce unnecessary motions, minimize fatigue caused by static load, minimize contact stress, leave adequate clearance. Now here is a picture showcasing it in further detail by including a table with a showcasing where the proportions should be allocated at, for a suitable and comfortable sitting position.

Here I experimented for myself and did the process showing the “appropriate” way of sitting down and where to keep your hands level,

As you can see this chair that isn’t ergonomically the best, as the back is rather slanted down which therefore makes my slant back. I then took another picture demonstrating how I should adequately sit for the most ergonomically suited position for a human. But as we know, not every humans have the same proportions meaning this would be different for someone else. I’ll do a further research into a topic called “anthropometrics” which further evaluates this.

With this process, I will apply it to my model and see where I could make it ergonomically suitable for the user.

I made a few sketches of different type of postures on a chair that people would usually sit on and use that to showcase different stretches and other factors that could relate to a chair that isn’t quite so ergonomic. I’ll be applying this concept to my product and seeing how I could improve it. You can see the drawing of an ergonomically designed shape on the far right.

Anthropometrics is the science of measuring body dimensions and other physical attributes. It is used in industrial design, garment design, ergonomics, and architecture to provide information on human body size and shape. Concerned with the application of ergonomics to the human form, and they’re being utilized to justify the user or target range for your product.

Here shows a demonstration of how anthropometrics work, and how a human’s proportions are portrayed in a simple way. There are more difficult to understand analysis of anthropometrics which show in full detail a particular individual's body works and uses that to create something for him that is ergonomically suitable.

With this visual image shown, I’ll be able to use this to re-size and proportion out my model and make it more appropriate for the average user to use for overall comfortability.

I drew some drawings to get myself aware of ergonomics and the basics, and how I could apply it to my final model. Also here are some shapes that show a visual transformation into a more ergonomic shape, that is comfortable to hold in the hand, and doesn’t use excessive force to anything else to grip. With these two-researches defined, I’ll be using this to further analysis and fix out a few errors that could be bad and finalize it.

// Model Analysis

Ergonomics/ Anthropometrics/ Smart Materials/ Model Analysis/ Constructing/ Final Design.

I’m going to be choosing design 1 has my final model. Here I’m going to be analyzing and the pros and cons whilst also developing and changing a few aspects of the shape to further fit my previous research of ergonomics and anthropometrics. Once this is done, I’ll be finished with this by showcasing a final model slide. I looked at the basic exterior of the design to realize that some parts don’t fit in within the overall design theme, so I decided to enhance it to further fit my specification. I did an analysis also on the point where the phone sits that it has to be bent upwards in a 45 – 60-degree angle to make it comfortable to sit on, and further improving the overall aesthetic and weight of the design.

Cons/ - The top pointy towers were quite sharp near the end, I imagined myself holding it and hurting pinching myself underneath my wrist which could be annoying or dangerous. - The towers were also unnecessarily long which wasn’t needed, so I decreased it. - The shape was too long itself, so improving on that factor, I decreased it.

.45

- Heavy,

Pros/ I have thoroughly looked into design 1 and acknowledged all the flaws that were prevalent in this design. I allocated them and further analyzed and improved the weakness to the design. I’ve have completed this process and I’m going to further proceed with this as my final design.

- Decreased the overall length to the shape and increased the height which makes it more comfortable in the hand when holding it. - I shortened the stubs on top and made the edges smoother to reduce any hazards of injuring yourself. - I added a few front for the phone to sit on, reducing additional weight, - Lightweight,

In this slide I will showcase the process of the making of my final model. I will be going in-depth analyse and see what best suits this model, and to see if there is any improvements to be made.

After showcasing how I will construct my model, I created some sketch-up models to get an idea to how it will look like in different perspectives three dimensionally. After this process, I’ll make a more presentable slide to showcase my final model.

After completing the sketch-ups, as I’ve stated when drawing this that I would use materials such as plastic to make this design, and a much better way would be to 3-D print it as it is quite an hard shape to make initially.

Here then I showed my models with the actual devices to get a sense of scale, and also figure out how this product would work anyways,

.47

Ergonomics/ Anthropometrics/ Smart Materials/ Model Analysis/ Constructing/ Final Design.

// Constructing

Here I made a development on this model, I decided to add a headset stand to complete the whole product. I believe this adds a little bit more detail onto the model. I made some new 3-D printed models of these by also including devices on them. The product is scaled down a bit which is why the product seem too bigger, otherwise it does work.

Here is the sketch-up version showcasing where I made those developments. I made a border around the wireless pads to indicate its functionality and where to place it. I then proceeded to make a headset rest on top for those headsets that are wireless or maybe are not.

Here I showcased the model with the devices on it. With different places, although the model is scaled down, (should be bigger than this) it still manages to work perfectly. The little uplift I added made the phone more secure in place, thanks to my research on ergonomics, and with experimenting.

This is the finalized model I created, it fits into my specification and will consumers who use multiple devices happy.

OVERVIEW // Brief // Specification; Phones are the most significant piece of technology you carry with you daily; they enable you to save data, take photos, communicate, record, obtain knowledge or information, compute and store important files, essentially everything you need in the palm of your hand. And, in order to keep these excellent pieces of technology running, is that they must be charged with a cable, and often, a charging brick. My idea is to make a multi-functional wireless charging pad for any technological device that supports it. Final Product // Design; The finished product is presented in front of you. I’ve researched, modified, developed, and refined several times in order to create what is displayed, that completely fits my specification. Along the process there were flaws in the design that I had to adapt to, and some elements that were removed that I appreciated, but this overall resulted in a far better and nicer product that is ergonomic, multi-functional, lightweight, and safe for a wireless charger.

// CLIENT RESEARCH Proposed Client – Zakariya

Name: Zakariya Age: 22 Desired Profession: Business Management

Now looking at foldable portable wireless charging, I was a bit lost at how I’m going to design this… Seeing other existing foldable designs but I couldn’t quite figure out my own design, so I decided to ask a friend of my mine who goes University and was in need of some wireless charging devices. I asked whether he was interested and said yes. With that I asked what he specifically wanted in the design, the theme, magnetic, wired, or not wired etc.

Zakariya is a 22-year-old Business student in his third year at the University of Westminster. He goes to his classes and always has a few devices with him for studying, including his iPad, phone, and headphones on the go. His lectures are also rather long, which means he only has a limited amount of time to charge his other devices before heading home. The issue arises when he wants to charge all of his devices at the same time in a comfortable position at all times, as well as when he is travelling home by train, because when he is low on battery, he is unable to do extra work. He wants something portable, and can fit in his pocket or bag on the go. Quick Interview How long have you lived in the UK?

“I lived in the UK for 6–8 years since it was the first location my family settled, and they wanted me to continue my education here because the education is significantly better than where I used to live.” What is your plan for the future? “I want to get a degree in business management and work for a large corporation, managing their entire business. I definitely had other options, but I chose this one since it felt more practical to me. I usually try to do my work as quickly as possible so that I don't procrastinate, and I enjoy learning about new topics and things in order to increase my knowledge of the world” What is your main problem at lectures? “Main problem being that I cant have all my devices simultaneously charging at the same time which prevents me from being a lot of chargers to university which could be hassle when it charges.” What are the main things you want to solve this problem? “I want it to be portable, probably some type of folding mechanism to fold into place when I need it to, compact, lightweight, smooth corners, and having it in a comfortable position.” What type of design do you want, any ideas or themes? “Personally I don’t really care, as long as its minimalistic and has smooth corners, just do what you think is perfect for me”

// PORTABLE WIRELESS CHARGER

I made some drawings of a some portable devices for inspiration and getting a grip to what I’m going to be making, I made various designs with different angles representing my preconceived knowledge on portable devices, although this would change over development, but this will be the basis in my mind when designing one.

// PORTABILITY So when looking at a “portable” device we must consider what the client initially wants. Since he wants more than one device on his product to be used, we must consider how the device will “fold” and “unfold”. This will include space for a tablet which can be used whilst charging in a ergonomic angle, and with his phone and headphones besides him. My client also wants the overall design to be quite simple and corner friendly, so I will have to look into that.

This will mean I will have to look into a new and complete design, and figure out the mechanics to making a portable device (or unfolding). The procedure will not take as long, but there will be lots of development and research going into perfecting such a design.

I then took some primary photos of some of these P.E mats that I found from my secondary school. I looked at them and realised how similar they are to “folding” and “unfolding” method of a portable product. And this perfectly fits it. With this example in mind, I will use this in order to create my design specifically retailed to my client, who has multiple devices that he wants to carry and charge at the same time when he travels to university.

// ?? These designs have this smooth curvature shape which, which seems to simplistic and very unique at the same. One of the designs in particular has a varied pattern whilst the other one has a repeated pattern.

Here I made some drawings of these shapes, although they’re made by different people, they seem to have a very rather similar correlation in design, and I thought that I would use these designs to make and figure out a design of his desire. My client didn’t specify a design genre, but said to keep it simple, so I have a lot of freedom to make this.

Once I looked deep into the designs that I was working with, I decided to make some experimental drawings by incorporating all designs there. I then combined and made these few designs to give myself a setting stone for later on to envelop and develop further on,

.51

Secondary Research/ Experimenting/ Developing Shape/ Models/ Developing/ Primary Research…

// Secondary Research // ?? The design is very geometric and only consisting of square/rectangular type of shapes all around to keep the same balance. I think the overall design for both of these are quite unique. I want to somewhat use this or perhaps pick between or combine.

I experimented with the overall shape and looked at whether I could use more of a rectangular shape. I made the same type of box shapes, and made different random ones to get an idea, later seeing the image, I realized there was a bit more to it, as some of them are hollow.

I then looked at whether I could combine both aspects and see what I could make from these shapes and see if the results fair to use actually use.

.52

Secondary Research/ Experimenting/ Developing Shape/ Models/ Developing/ Primary Research…

// Experimenting

In this slide I’ll be experimenting and investigating how these shapes would form into a new form. I investigated the critical aspects of the designs and experimented what would work best and sort a solution or idea that would inspire me.

Here I experimented and created some collages of the research I did. I made some random shapes that are near the same and thought how this would inspire me. With this I formed many new ideas that would be like the research I’ve conducted.

I did research on both geometric and curvature design. And then on the final collage I combined them both together to create this.

I then made some more refined drawings. It isn’t a completely new idea but rather is an experimentation of different patterns and ideas and combinations to see and use later on. With this investigation it would help me envelop a better formed design consisting of both. But there could also be a chance where I only use one of them since that one could be better.

.53

Here I then created some models which I stacked on-top of eachother to gain some sort of ideas/inspiration to further improve my design. This also showcases my knowledge on this particular research.

Secondary Research/ Experimenting/ Developing Shape/ Models/ Developing/ Primary Research…

// Developing Shape

After conducting that research, I then made some more designs that are apparent for a portable wireless charger. I obviously haven’t looked into the mechanism of the product, but that will be dealt later on when analysing the final product.

Here I’m showcasing a development stage of ideas, new ideas, inspiration etc. I will use this to further enhance my knowledge of a particular shape that I could use for my final model.

I made some arbitrary designs that I could use for inspiration. I made some fascinating designs, although I won’t probably be using these anyways but in some particular aspect, I could possibly take some elements of these drawings and use it later on.

I then made a development series consisting of everything I learned so far and utilised it on this shape. I picked out some particular aspects that looked good and use it to create this design.

.54

// Models

Secondary Research/ Experimenting/ Developing Shape/ Models/ Developing/ Primary Research…

Here I created some paper models for inspiration. I made shapes that are inherently different from the design I’m working with, and then precedingly changed the overall shape which matched the shape and design that I’m going for. It’s more as if its going from a complex shape to a more simplistic form, the opposite.

02.

01.

03.

04.

I then proceeded to mix these shapes together in-order to create some new designs for a basic idea. I won’t entirely use this to settle out my foundation but rather gain knowledge and experience to influence and greatly improve my client’s product. Another thing to take in consideration is that the design will have to be fairly simplistic and not too crazy as he is quite of a minimalist (he stated). And he likes dark colours which keeps everything enigmatic and low-key.

Once I combine the shapes together, I made a few alterations to enhance the overall shapes.

01.

02.

03. I then made some more finalised forms by collecting all of them to create newer and more sustained inspirational idea. It seems to be more of a plan drawing that needs to be folded like a net.

.55

// Developing

Once I did the research of the paper models, I decided to further develop onwards from that point, seeing whether there is something I like in particular occurring from that design. I made some other designs that are similar to my first and second research, obviously that are some cataracts that being it’s not fully developed.

Coming from the previous slide I further developed those pieces and made these collages. You can see how I further develop those designs onwards to create even more. I’ll be going to furthermore extend this and see what I can create at the end. 01.

Here I went back and re-developed my geometric research and I saw what I could do with these shapes. Hopefully this will make it clear whether to use this or not.

In this section here I made some further developed plan drawings of my product as a net, showcasing what I’ve learnt and mastering different styles.

.56

These are just random designs that I won’t probably be using but rather as inspiration. From here on out I’ll be further developing this process even more until I’ll have a final product.

I decided to go back to my previous works that I didn’t utilise because they were either seen as bland or insufficient compared to my specification. Here I found some designs of mine that are quite similar.

One I found these I will begin to use some elements of these drawings to use later on. They seem to have a very similar appearance to both of my secondary research currently, and hopefully I will further develop and use these.

Here are the parts of my previous drawings that I picked out in particular that best suited my research and overall thorough design in my mind that I have currently. I’ll be using some aspects of these designs including these below to see and improve my overall design. After this research conducted I’ll be doing another research to thoroughly investigate this research and improve upon.

// Primary Research

// SAMSUNG S7 EDGE Here I researched on my old previous phone. The design is very minimalistic, elegant and slick. It has very round corners with a curve that curves around the edges of the phones downwards creating this beautiful display. I picked this reason being it has very similar designing to my research and it also being very unique, and me making a product that is for phones/tablets is quite ironic.

I picked out some parts of the phone and used them for my research. Here in particular you can normally find curved edged shapes, I decided they were quite boring so I managed to change them whilst maintaining the overall appearance.

Here I made a quick designs showcasing the research that I’m utilising here. You can see I tried incorporating it all around the place here.

// New Ideas

I decided to go back and check out the folding/unfolding method, I did some experimenting on sketch-up and found out this design could be plausible and work perfectly if executed and planned properly.

Here I was messing around with sketch-up making this lose tiles and realised that this could be a great idea for a wireless charger. Unfolding and folding design.

Here is a basic concept I started with. And also another more complex concept.

Here I started making those designs much more intricate by more differentiated versions. On the left side I made a quick example of a fold design to get an idea, obviously it’s thin and wouldn’t work properly. So I further developed it (on the right) and made this idea of having a triangular cut in-between so it would fold properly, but problem arises that how would it stay stable? I’ll have to look at this later once I get my final design finished.

I found a solution to making the design more stable is to add these outer parts which are to be bent and put inside. I realised this after looking at many other nets. This will make the product more stable, but something that is more thicker wouldn’t perhaps work unfortunately.

// Analysis

This slide will be covering and basically analyzing the designs I picked. Going over what should be correct – what works and not etc. and finally, what to improve that could enhance the overall design.

Design 01.

I picked out these specific elements to be in my final product, I want to incorporate a folding design which is quite unusual for a wireless charger, very. Another reason being how it’s a very simplistic design which is also best suited for my customer. It does have some sharp corners, but that can be sorted later in this analysis page right over here.

Materials. = Wood

Pros/ - Shape is distinct, and is smooth (no safety hazards),

- Has enough space, - Easy to handle and use, - Comfortable to hold,

.65

Cons/ - Difficult shape to understand, - Could be further refined and improved to make it much better, as it uses a bit too much space.

With this design in particular it would be most appropriate to use something such as wood (MDF) to construct this concept. I could use something as 3D printing, but I would have to print out the separate parts to it which could be quite time consuming, although the product would be accurate, it would be much more sufficient using wood to make this, specifically “laser” cutting.

// Analysis

This slide will be covering and basically analyzing the designs I picked. Going over what should be correct – what works and not etc. and finally, what to improve that could enhance the overall design.

Design 02.

Here I picked out these two designs to be for my final product, reason being I believe once further developed this would be much suited for a portable wireless charger. A charger that is lifted, has space for headphone, two wireless holders.

Another reason being its obvious minimalistic design that is that I’m going to further develop this to make it less sharp and safer for the client to use.

Pros/ - Shape is distinct, and is smooth (no safety hazards),

- Has enough space, - Easy to handle and use, - Comfortable to hold,

.66

Cons/ - Could be heavy, - Would be tedious to fold and close.

Materials. = Plastic

With this design, it would rather be more appropriate to use plastic as this design has a lot of curves which can be quite difficult to accurately display it on equal sides. It is also quite a big model, and to properly construct it would be a nuisance using something other than 3-D Printing. This product specifically is more desired to be 3-D printing.

Here I'm going back to my previous slides to talk about Ergonomics and Anthropometrics as this is necessary when making a product. My client also stated that he wanted this product specifically targeted for him, so I measured his hand and arm length. With this I will be able to determine how I could focus the product specifically to him and make it more accurate.

Here I experimented for myself and did the process showing the “appropriate” way of sitting down and where to keep your hands level, With this process, I will apply it to my model and see where I could make it ergonomically suitable for the user.

With these two-researches defined, I’ll be using this to further analysis and fix out a few errors that could be bad and finalize it. Here shows a demonstration of how anthropometrics work, and how a human’s proportions are portrayed in a simple way.

There are more difficult to understand analysis of anthropometrics which show in full detail a particular individual's body works and uses that to create something for him that is ergonomically suitable.

Here I’ve taken pictures of the client's foreman and hand and measured it. It comes to be that my client's foreman is 12 inches, and his hand 7 inches.

I’ll use this research to configure out a good desirable size for my client to use his product.

// Model Analysis

I’m going to be choosing design 1 because I believe it would fit perfectly for a portable model. Here I’m going to analyzing and going over the pros and cons, and fixing the cons, and overall making the design much more desirable and ergonomic and perfect for my client to use. Once this is done, I’ll be finished by showcasing a constructing slide of be making and forming the design. Here I looked and found out a better solution than adding these flaps at the end, since this shape is already properly made for such a portable device, I decided to fold design which came out to be better than I suppose. I also looked into a way of making the product move, and how to make it click in when its at the top because obviously it won’t stand up like that, so there is a lot of things to look at when analyzing.

I have thoroughly looked into design 1 and acknowledged all the flaws that were prevalent in this design. I allocated them and further analyzed and improved the weakness to the design. I’ve have completed this process and I’m going to further proceed with this as my final design.

Pros/ - I changed the whole layout making it save much more space, - It has a clip-on top which connects the two wireless pads together, - It has a middle whole which is another wireless pad for other things such as earphones.

- Also made the shapes smoother, meaning it is safer. - And it is ergonomically constructed towards my client.

.69

- I added a few front for the phone to sit on, reducing additional weight, - Lightweight,

Cons/

- Folding can be a bit flimsy so to fix this is to make a case.

// Constructing

In this slide I will showcase the process of the making of my final model. I will be going in-depth analyse and see what best suits this model, and to see if there is any improvements to be made.

Here I made some drawings of the sketch-ups by going over, I’ll use this later to configure out what I need to change or add later to enhance it and fix it overall. Here are all the sketch-up models I made for this. The one on the bottom is the mechanism I adapted by looking at other clicking in devices. This will hold it in tight on the top and stay that way. And finally, the final model underneath.

// Prototype

In this slide I made a model of the sketch-ups that I made in the previous slide. Here I’ll be looking into the making of the ‘prototype’, and later seeing what I could improve to make it better. This prototype helps me get an understanding in a 3-Dimensional way to fully see the model in action, plus by adding the devices on top to help it even more.

Here is the basic plan of the product, I decided to not add the hinges as this is a prototype.

Here I got this material which is bendable and won’t break apart, I used this paper to demonstrate the hinges in action by placing them,

Once I’ve done that, I had to connect the tops together so I used some masking tape to use it as an example to demonstrate how the product will work. I also showed different angles and how it will fold. I tired to use the connecting method from my previous slide but I realized how annoying it would be trying to unfold it. Because this way it makes it much easier, so I’ll be probably looking into another method such as placing some magnets.

I finally then showcased it by using devices to demonstrate how it would work, and from this point onwards see what I need improve on, I can already see some parts which need development from making this prototype, and hopefully I can solve all the problems to this product.

.71

Smart Materials/ Model Analysis/ Constructing/ Prototype/ Analysis + Development/ Constructing/ Final Model...

// Analysis + Development

In this in slide I analyzed the design and will be looking at ways to improve the design,

So, I firstly decided to change the length of the two flaps, reason being when I showcased the pictures the two devices overlapped making it impossible to have two devices vertically sitting. I then tried to look at some mechanism to make the top flag connect, e.g., looking at magnetic strips or something more complicated such as an inner part which connects. I also realized that the device doesn’t have a little stand to hold it on the bottom which means it can be slip and fall, so I decided to make the whole device magnetic so it can just be stuck on, making it much more ideal and having another benefit such as being a mag-safe as well.

With this analysis I will try configure out what would be the best possible route to all this, and what I could do to improve my design. There is one place where I can’t work it out properly, and that would be connecting section. I’ll be experimenting on that and see what works best through these drawings.

.72

Here I decided to move the hole shape making so the bottom is on the right side, I also made this little ledge which could also acts as a support which will work on all sides.

Smart Materials/ Model Analysis/ Constructing/ Prototype/ Analysis + Development/ Constructing/ Final Model...

// Constructing

In this slide I will showcase the process of the making of my final model.

Here I made some 2DCAD layouts to be laser cut. I decided to change the overall slope of the shape to make it longer, so the devices won’t overhang, I also made the shapes edges smoother like the client requested. And finally, these little two parts which will be shown here.

Here are the parts, laser cut, and read to be joined.

Here is the model standing up, I used masking tape to make it stand up to demonstrate how it would look like, problem is the way it will hook is quite hard, so I’ll be trying to solve that.

I decided to move the model in different angles and found that this shape could work as-well and decided to change the design a bit.

.73

I decided to add hinges to make the parts rotate much easier.

This is where the two parts come, I used wood glue to glue them on . the plate which holds it in place firmly, and it can also be used to hook it together securely which is 2 in making the product more versatile.

PORTABLE WIRELESS CHARGER // OVERVIEW // Client // Interview; Zakariya is a 22-year-old Business student in his third year at the University of Westminster. He wants something portable, and can fit in his pocket or back on the go. Final Product // Design; The finished product is presented in front of you. I’ve researched, modified, developed, and refined several times in order to create what is displayed, that completely fits my clients specification. Along the process there were flaws in the design that I had to adapt to, and some elements that were removed that I appreciated, but this overall resulted in a far better and nicer product that is ergonomic, multi-functional, lightweight, compact, safe portable wireless charger.

FINAL DESIGN //

// CLIENTS OPINIONS Proposed Client – Zakariya

Product -

I’ll be asking my client a few questions about this product, and to see what his opinions are on it, and an overall conclusion What do you think about the overall aesthetic of the design? – “Yeah… I like the overall design. The minimalistic design with those subtle curved corners is what I really l about this design, I also like the little blocks or whatever they are, probably stoppers are great for it to fold and stay in place without actually using any advanced mechanism, one thing I could say the corners on the bottom are a bit sharp and I could get my fingers in it” The durability of the design? – “It‘s not bad, its okay, it does the job, I can feel it being a little clunky as there might be a bit of a dimension error that being probably like half a mm or so off, but besides that it seems to be quite durable, at least for my preference” Functionality of the design? – “I cant really say much, but yeah it seems functional and practically working, a foldable wireless charger with multiple pads for other items such as your earphone, tablets.. So on, so on.” Safety of the product? – “It seems to be quite safe, but I would say because it can be a bit clunky, I suppose my finger might get in it by a bit which would be annoying.. But anything besides that it seems to be safe”

Size of the product? – “I like the size, I think its perfect, it fits into my pocket, and when unfolding it has enough space to place my devices on.” What don’t you like the about the design, what can I improve? – “There really isn’t anything that I dislike about the design, but one thing I could say to improve is making it less clunky which is a relatively simple fix...”

With that interview done, I can now fully see what he liked about the product, I asked him quite a varied number of things such as durability and safety (I think those are important). With this interview I know now what I can do to improve it if I’m choosing this as a final design to develop and refine later on.

// WIRELESS CHARGER ON TRANSPORTATION

// TRANSPORTATION On a lot of forms of transportation, particularly where I'll be biasing this product, which will be in London; looking at buses in London you can see they have these conventionally styled seats with handles on top of it, on other forms of transportation such as the TFL, they particularly have seats besides with handle besides it to rest you arm as such. I would possibly have to create two separate designs, or I could make as such which is compatible or portable to connect to these handles. My main concept idea would probably be a little extendable board, if or if not, or something more compact, but we will see where this takes us.

I then took some primary photos of some of these transportation, you can see it evidently there how these seats are designed same similarly. I the n happen to find a seat with a USB port which changed my concept in mind, and could possibly adapt it and make it suitable with the USB port there for charging as such. I will have to re-design and figure out a way to make it compatible with this, or make another separate design possibly.

.74

// BASIC IDEAS/CONCEPT

I saw some already made holders for some specific tools and I saw how they’re somewhat similar to what I’m trying to do. They have holders that can be unattached with different locking mechanisms, possibly what I could use as inspiration or a basic start (concept).

I then looked at a bus seat and decided to add those designs on it to visual how it would look like, this would give me options to develop and thoroughly improve it. And to see what design concepts here would fit the best, and to utilise later on. I will also have to research on this and see other types of these and would be better to utilise or use them to completely make my own design for this in particular.

.75

// Different Concepts

Here is some different type of concepts that I’m looking at which I’m trying to get familiar with. Basing designs off these images, obviously looking at where I’m going to be adapting my particular boards will be based on London transportation and that vary so there would be a specialised one for many transportation located there.

I decided to make some back seated design, looking at different variations of it and other ways to secure it. The one above is a concept having a little table in-front or could be behind the seat. To add some underneath wireless pads to make it a wireless charging “board”.

.76

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// Investigating Concepts

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

I decided to make some chair type designs having an accessible board to investigate different type of concepts/ideas that would be the best for this type of product to function properly. Understanding different aspects of “seats” and trying to innovate and add something is quite a difficult task, I went and drew a conventional seat you would see almost everywhere and tried to implement some sort of wireless function or perhaps looked at ways. Having it underneath the chair, or the sides, or the curve etc.

From this investigation I’ll try to pick out aspects and adapt it thoroughly onto a TFL bus seat for this in particular.

TFL Bus Seats/

I broke down some aspects of the seat design above and decided to use them on a bus seat. I took photos of a few bus seats, primarily the side, and the side back. I then grabbed some parts of those aspects that fit in well and stuck them together to get a visual representation of this board seat design that I’m trying to envision. After this the overall design would be clearer and have a definite way to improve and see what is best.

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// Investigating Concepts

In the previous slides, those were preliminary sketches, which were now developed into more improved and existing products. From the chair I made multiple more designs that would benefit from having a wireless charger. I obviously want to adapt that into something behind a seat, so I’ll be looking into it and picking out elements which seem a good idea.

Here I picked out some parts what would seem quite plausible to use on something behind the seat as they’re quite similar. I would like to further adapt on these elements and further investigate to create a somewhat functioning product.

I will also have to look into the flaws of this and fix it to make it suitable for person using it, and the person infront to see if it would interfere with his neck when laying back.

.78

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// Adapting Ideas

In this slide I’ll be adapting the ideas that I forged in the previous slide and the implementing a conventional London bus seat and seeing how it would fit and design by drawing it in to visualise. This will combat the flaws and makes sure I have a clear envision in what I’m planning and what possibly I could improve on.

01.

I took this particular piece form the previous slide, I thought it would be a good way to secure the ‘board’ behind it, but it comes out of the comfort of the person infront. I also added a little desk underneath to make it more secure.

02.

Looking at this, it was quite hard to use this, but I suppose I would use it another way. Here I made a little curve that overlapped on top and secures it in place.

03.

This one was a bit ambiguous, I altered the main shape into a bit more of a trapezium and tried connecting that onto the back of the seat, and added a desk. It also seems to take comfort of the person in-front out.

From this point onwards, I’ll be taking these visuals into consideration (as these are preliminary designs, I will further improve them through research). I will find more ways to innovate and possibly add something that could further enhance, and look at a particular theme for the product to be followed.

.79

One thing to take in from this visual, is comfortability for the passenger in-front, when resting his back, or neck, it would be rather uncomfortable as it would protrude outwards a bit. I’ll be looking at also adapting or making a complete separate product for this on trains.

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// Analysis

In this slide I’ll be doing a critical analysis on the formulated designs I constructed with little to no innovation. Seeing the visual flaws, what to improve, and innovation.

01.

Looking at this design here, I saw that the front part acts as a great way to secure the ‘board’ in place, and has enough room for a desk underneath which is large enough – that I being quite thin is also a plus. There’s evidently a flew flaws that are heavily noticeable here, one being it would be awkward to get it out. The size is also quite big, would be a tedious task to get it out. Another being it would eliminate anyone sitting in-front, making it rather uncomfortable for the person ahead.

02. In this design in particular contrary to ’01.’ it is smaller, supposedly looks to be a little bit more thinner. The design wraps around the bar handle on the top making it a secure design without it protruding outwards and possibly messing with the comfort of the passenger infront. Has a reasonably sized desk with more of a shaper design. One flaw would be that it is quite sharp on the edges, there could be room to improve that. Another thing that I noticed was the sheer size of these designs, as I said, holding on one of these would be too obvious. So this could be a room to innovate and make it better.

03. I went for more of a bizarre quite of design here, lets say it isn’t attended for the comfort of the passenger in-front. It has quite a lot of desk room and is significantly smaller in length, has seems to be secured in place. Obviously stated, this was quite a far optimistic design, didn’t work out visually looking at this, there could be no way to improve but by drastically altering the design; Sharp edges, comfort of passenger, massive in width, possibly isn’t secure.

.80

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// New Ideas

I decided to look a gaming seat, I saw that the structure of the gaming seat is awfully similar to what I visualised in the pervious slide and would perhaps take a look to expand on it.

Here I took inspiration of the seats, and decided to make my very own which is similar to ’02.’ design in the previous slide. I expanded and made my very own unique design.

You can see the design is evidently very similar, and I saw this and realised it to have very little to no flaws at all taking in consideration the specifics required.

I will decide to take on this approach and see where this takes me. New ideas/ I went ahead and picked out some elements of this design and decided to use them later on as they’re relevant to I would possibly do another visual on this and seeing what else I could introduce to make this product effectively better.

.81

Perhaps I could take some elements of this seat and possibly apply that to this prototype/sketch design I have in mind.

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

Here on this slide, I made some more new ideas used from the evaluated research from the prior slides provided.

Here I improved the drawings a bit by enhancing them to properly fit in with the TFL bus seats. I also made some other side elevations showcasing the design, and what I could else add to improve it thoroughly.

.82

// New Ideas

Different Concepts/ Investigating Concepts/ Adapting Ideas/ Analysis/ New Ideas/ Secondary Research…

// Secondary Research

// ?? The design of this interested me, reason being because of its shape, and how thin it is. It particularly has flat, smoothed curved edges with some kind of support underneath. I looked at visualisation (prototype’s) and realised how similar this style would fit in, and I would obviously have to adapt and make a few necessary changes.

Here is a quick design breakdown and analysis of this design in particular, I decided that the design is too thin so I added a bit of depth to it (not to much). I also adapted and added a more smooth curve to it rather than it being sharply slanted, and a 2 point curve by adding an additional curve to it.

.83

Applying Research/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Primary Research/ Models/ TFL Trains…

// Applying Research // ?? Here I’ll be looking at these particular designs to get few more references of the design besides my picture of the bus seat. Going to be seeing how their one works, and why it is effective, this would make it more helpful when designing such a product.

So when trying to make this type of design, it isn’t going to be compatible with other type of backseats etc. this would primarily be used on London transportation such as their buses and trains, or anything that has a similar type of design. These other two pictures besides the first one are for a general knowledge on different type of back seat holders that I could possibly use.

I’m going to be basing my designs out of this visual here, as I’ve done an analysis and found this to be the most ideal.

Design 01.

Once I had that research applied I decided to make a prototype design. I made this one particular concept, based on the prior visuals I made demonstrating what it would look like. I also showed a basic image of what it would looking behind a connected seat (left side of the drawing). I’ll definitely make some more designs based on that research and see where I can go from there.

I realised that some other buses half an in-built USB slot which I could use to my advantage and possibly innovate it to fit in. One thing I realised from the pictures above of other behind seat designs is that they’re significantly smaller compared.

.84

Design 02.

Here I made a design, I realised that making it smaller would make the product overall more effective and useful to carry around, thus making it more “portable”. I also added this ledge that further exceeds the original desk design I had on this – I could perhaps make a folding mechanism with this making the design better in-fact.

Applying Research/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Primary Research/ Models/ TFL Trains…

// Secondary Research

// ?? Here I looked at this particular shaped to add onto and make new ideas that are much thoroughly improved. I like the little box shape inside of the shape which acts as a support, also it being a bit thicker and having nice curved edges.

I looked at the overall base and found similarities to my previous secondary research. This time I adapted the middle part box within and decided to use that and add onto some similar designs I created to visualise how it would look like. From what I can see it appears to make the structure more stronger by acting as a support without taking to much space.

.85

Different examples of in structure technique that is utilised, I also developed and made my own few.

Applying Research/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Primary Research/ Models/ TFL Trains…

// Primary Research // BANANA Here I’m going to be going through my old previous primary research slide of a banana. I didn’t use most of the aspects that were provided. I saw that a banana had the shape that I was looking for in-mind, and other elements to it. I will use this research to further enhance my product.

I found these particular shapes to be unique and somewhat similar to expand onto my design. That being the curvature, and the little bumps that it has.

Also I took some of my previous sketch-ups and realised how dramatically similar they are in a sense. The simple wave curves, and the how thin it is. From this I could make a 3-D visualisation of the product/prototype I’m working on.

I developed the little shapes, and added arbitrary protruding bumps on each sides, I perhaps could make my design more bizarre and add more crazy curves etc. this would be a possibility.

I looked at this curved design and decided to innovate it by adding them two pieces together and see what shapes I could perhaps make. I made quite a few unique shapes with these combinations, and I see a necessary point of doing this to sharpen my mind on this product.

.86

I’ll use some aspects of these designs for this product and my future designs.

Applying Research/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Primary Research/ Models/ TFL Trains…

// New Designs

In this slide I’ll be creating new designs using ideas that I formulated through this research and before.

Here I made some abstract drawings using ideas from my previous slides and here to formulate generate some new ideas.

I made a sketch-up using the sketches above to construct a new idea, I also decided to get some elements of the banana research I did and adapt that. From there I created these two designs in particular that I liked and decide to further expand it.

.87

Here are some final constructed designs, I also tried to make a design similar to the structure support and some others adapted through the banana.

Applying Research/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Primary Research/ Models/ TFL Trains…

// Models

Here I made some models of the designs that I made in the previous design, I’ll be also going to analyse them as they’re prototypes.

01.

In this design specifically I decided to use the little support structure technique on the bottom of it from my secondary research, I also added the little handles as well to support it in place (I’ll be going in a more in-depth analysis of the handles to make it perfectly suitable for many other poles). One thing perhaps I don’t like about this design is the fact that it is quite bulky, it’s definitely wider but shorter in length, and also is perfectly designed to be “folded” up which will make it compact. Overall looking at this design, I would personally not go for it as it is bulky, also for aesthetic purposes I would say that is downside.

02.

In this design prototype I went for a more curvature shape which is very similar to my prior research on thin edges. I personally think this is a perfect design for such a unusual product. It is thin, small, compact and has decently enough space for a desk. I also added this little down part here which would ensure that it would stay on the seat behind it as it would sit firmly next to it. This design in particular would be quite difficult to make it ‘foldable’ because of how unusual the shape is, but I guarantee what wouldn’t be a problem if it’s this small. Overall I’m definitely looking towards this design to further progress with.

03. This design is definitely similar to “02.” but I alerted and made a few changes, that being it’s much shorter and has much more of a slant, and visibly smaller. This design could be ideal for making foldable as it would just collapse onto each-other if it had screws. Another thing to notice that on the back side there isn’t a curved edge, that being it would help ensure it would sit proportionally to the seat flat on. In conclusion, this design is definitely worth looking at and expanding onto to make it better.

// TFL Trains

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

I want to also try another concept and look at TFL train seats. I normally travel on train, and I think that it would be rather useful having some sort of wireless clickable desk, that retracts and moves out the way like plane desks.

TFL Train Seats/

I’ll be now doing some research on this as-well and seeing where this takes me.

01.

I’m also going to be doing the same thing that I done in my previous slides. But over here I made a few ideas of how I'm going to be making this part of the product. Obviously, the concept is still there, but this time it will be on TFL trains. I’ll have to do some more thorough investigation and drawings on this to get a full understanding and use it later to adapt to these handles instead.

02.

03. Here’s just a few designs I saw while browsing, I’ll use these designs as inspiration, a visual representation, and from there on I’ll make my own prototypes and concepts and finally adapt into an actual working, functional product.

Here I made a few more drawings of a particular seat and developed it by joining the two of the same seats together to create this design on the bottom (dark grey). Reason why in particular I'm looking at somewhat the same seat again is because of the design and ideas I can formulate from it. I want to understand and use the seat to my advantage to innovate it.

I picked out some elements of the design and put them in different angles to create ideas for the handles to stick on (a firm design to hold onto when I’m visualizing or designing).

I then grabbed some parts of those aspects that fit in well and stuck them together to get a visual representation of this handle seat design that I’m trying to envision. After this the overall design would be clearer and have a definite way to improve and see what is best. 01.

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

I took some close of the handles to visualize and draw the desks that are attached to that part, this way I would firmly understand how to make such a concept and later adapt and add additional pieces to it. Roughly below I made some sketches of some ideas that I would perhaps use, same concept. 01.

03.

.92

Here I utilized this long board method here to make a spacious desk with two different variations one being inside phone holder and the other being outside.

I looked at this one right here, I altered it quite a lot but I’m happy with the outcome. It has this two-point connecter which can possibly fold into eachother making it compact and useful on the go.

This one is much smaller, and the same concept applies as “02.” this time being a lot more compact, and it having a smaller holder than a bigger one as above.

New Ideas/ Investigating/ Applying Concepts/ Analysing/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Analysis …

// Analysing

In this slide I’ll be doing a critical analysis on the formulated designs I constructed with little to no innovation. Seeing the visual flaws, what to improve, and innovation.

01.

Looking at this design here I went for a long board design here, that being because it’s more spacious so you can fit more than just a laptop etc., and it also having an inside little pocket to slot your phone to charge up. I picked this one over the other one as this design is quite ambiguous I decided this one is best fitted. I don’t perhaps think I’ll use this one as the flaws are quite certain, one being its too big, second being it cannot fold on to each-other making it more compact, and finally I don’t think the inside pocket would be as efficient.

02. In this design in particular I went for a two-point type of foldable wireless holder which opens up and has the possibility to open and close up making it “foldable”. It’s a fairly simple design and I wouldn’t say there is anything in particular I could say about it rather that I could change the aesthetic of it a bit. In conclusion there isn’t really anything flawed about this, one thing I would definitely change is the phone stand to a more of a inwards one, but I need to see if that would defeat comfortability.

03. This one in here is rather similar to “02.” primarily the shape, but I’ve done the complete opposite here, rather it having a massive holder I made sure that it smaller in-fact so it could save more space on the handle thus making it more compact, I really like the half circle aesthetic here and I’m most certain I would choose this one to progress with One then I would say that I would probably change the phone holder, as stated above just because it’s too big, and try and adapt and change it to a much smaller one.

.93

// ?? This design is pretty similar to the other research, one difference being that it has this half cut rectangular/square shape to it. Also that it being quite thin, elegant and smooth overall which is the main aesthetic that I’m going for.

I looked at the main view of the structure and knew what type of aesthetic and design that I’m going to be working with. I decided that I wouldn’t have a 2-point type of curve which I utilised before but instead a stagnant point. I added both of the sections together to create a basic square hollow point, furthermore I tried innovating and stacked it together to create this type of structure or pattern. Possibly I could use this as pattern for a 3D printer to add flexibility to my product.

.94

// Secondary Research

New Ideas/ Investigating/ Applying Concepts/ Analysing/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Analysis …

// Secondary Research

// ?? I wanted to look at some other aesthetics as well, this one having a more elegant sharp style, and a more oval type of style. I’ll go in-depth and look at different possible variants and type to crate a design out of it by perhaps mixing both designs together or by simply picking one which ideally suits it best.

I looked at the basics of both of the structures and I went for a design breakdown and picked out the elements that I found the most interesting; one in particular being this corner which has a smooth curve on the bottom rather having it on both top and bottom, usage of other shapes such as triangles, trapeziums. Another aspect being how it is a slick elegant design whilst still maintaining the smooth curve to it, almost as if it’s not there (an illusion). And different plan drawings of parallel angled section making different type of curves etc to be used as a board. In the oval it’s much more simpler rather than being elegant, complex etc. I particularly and mainly only used the top and bottom and decided to split it in half seeing what type of shape I would make. It seems that it’s rather smooth on top create for placing down objects – I’ll possibly use the bottom section to curve inwards, and finally I made a few plan drawings of the top board as well.

// EXPERIMENTATION I will be doing a bit of experimenting with these products. I’ve already constructed some sketches/designs and now will be forwarding by possibly adapting or constructing a completely new design from this point. I’ll see what fits best for this scenario and figure out a design that would work properly for this product that I’m constructing.

I made a few shapes and looking at different variables, then I made some more complex and intricated designs that I would possibly use and some sketch-ups demonstrating a bit of development and ideas that are formed.

// New Designs

In this slide I’ll be making some designs out of the research and seeing where it would take me, and perhaps innovating or seeing flaws etc. that I can improve earlier on for a better resulted product.

I’ll then further develop these in the next slide or do some more research to possibly enhance the aesthetic or find some more solutions that could make it work perfectly well.

Here I made some preliminary sketches of some top table designs that I would arguably go for. I used my prior research and tried to configure out an ideal solution for this. I made variables of the design and sought to find the best one. I also figured how another 2-point method this being having an extended arm which is moveable making so you can move the wireless desk forward or anywhere for your comfortability.

01.

02.

03.

I made a few finished completed designs; you can see I have this moveable extended arm which I included, I also showcased and added different board type of designs here, from here I would further develop and make it much better as its not a finished piece.

New Ideas/ Investigating/ Applying Concepts/ Analysing/ Secondary Research/ New Designs/ Analysis …

// Analysis

I’ll be looking into these designs and seeing what I could possibly change to or add to make it more functional or better.

01. This design here is quite simple, really nothing special but it works effortlessly. It has a stable shape which has enough space for your equipment to be placed one, I’ll also need to adapt a wireless pad, possibly indented or just have the whole pad as wirelessly charged. I could also add some extended pieces which could help the desk to be more functional, but we will have to see what later on.

02. This design is similar to the first one, I didn’t do that many drastic changes besides removing that little point there. There isn’t any particular reason besides it changing the shape (aesthetic purposes), or to indicate what I perhaps see, is to place your phone. There really isn’t any actual difference on this design, besides it saving more materials.

03. I tried to do something different here, that being I innovated the styles together that I was researching to make this design, but I found that it rather had no purpose at all here, just a bunch of missing parts to the whole board. Instead, I’ll try and look for something that protrudes outwards rather than changing the shape of the board.

02.

I want to further develop with this shape ideally, mainly being because I think this could be a great way to lengthen the overall shape making it easier to add your technological items on. By lengthening the shape adds more space and I’ll look into other type designs in this slide which would be appropriate for this particular design.

Another thing that I’ll have to look into is the weight distribution seeing whether anything would slide off or not.

I made a few more developed board designs incorporating this particular design element of it protruding a bit outwards, I also made a few designs that were also a bit lengthy = having a lot more desk space included.

01.

02.

I then picked out these designs that I want to follow forward with,

// New Designs

In this slide I’ll be looking over a few designs that I want to use for my final idea for TFL trains,

A Few Designs.

I made a few black-card models of the board on-top; I’ll be picking out the one in particular I like and would like to develop onwards from here, add new things to it and finalize it, this one isn’t as difficult as the other one I’m doing so I'll be doing a prototype to get a real-life visual glance and from there onwards further develop it. Points/

These two are the designs that I want to further develop with, there are a few points that I would like to address for that reason =

• It is lengthy, adequate space for your essentials. • Could perhaps be portable, possibly a sliding mechanism? • Simple,

Chosen Design. This is the chosen design, although those designs being very similar I decided to go for this particularly it having a better side which is ideal for adding your phone here.

// Development

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

I developed my research and decided to use some elements here, one main thing being is the overall design shape in particular. I made little lines to add different type of variations, and some more linear static ones.

So, I added a little bit of more depth than usual on this part here, I thought of making a little space underneath for extra storage of your devices. I looked into it and made sure that it would fit comfortably, Main problem that arose from is the device get too far in deep, so to change that, I added a little block which prevents it from going in too deep which creates a problem when getting it on a stationary point.

I want to incorporate something like this within my design.

I made some sketch-up designs here trying to understand the structure, now I’m going to fully incorporate it within my design here.

.101

Sketch-up/

I made this part of the model showcasing the design element that I’ve taken in. This gives me more room to improve and adapt further onwards for my design; I’ll further develop this, refine it, and try to form a final outcome.

New Designs/ Development/ Prototyping/ Secondary Research/ New Ideas/ Sliding Mechanism …

// Prototyping

Here will be a bit of prototyping, seeing whether this type of idea is plausible, and with actually having in-front of you, you can understand the product and diminish any flaw or mistake that could perhaps be occurring.

When I started making the product, I almost forgot to add the back part which makes sure any product you have that is underneath won’t fly out.

Added the back, Other angles,

I then added this rectangular piece to demonstrate how the phone will be in, I also made sure that there is enough space for the phone to peak a little so you could grab it easily.

Applying the same research onto something like this,

New Designs/ Development/ Prototyping/ Secondary Research/ New Ideas/ Sliding Mechanism …

// Secondary Research

// Serpentine Pavilion I want to further improve and refine my design (prototype or so). I looked into something that is rather similar but it has this unique stacked focused element to it which really appealed towards me so I insisted on researching about this. I want to explore more onto this and look into different locking mechanisms etc. and I think this is a great starting point.

Here I looked more into the design in particular. For my other slides I’m going to do research on some specific mechanism, attachments and some folding techniques for this, so I think this would further refine and help me be able to understand this design element that I’m working with.

.103

I also thought about adding some type of glass here, just experimenting to see whether this would be appropriate or not, or really any beneficial to the design functionally, or aesthetically.

New Designs/ Development/ Prototyping/ Secondary Research/ New Ideas/ Sliding Mechanism …

// New Ideas

In this slide I’m looking for some new ideas which have been further refined by my secondary research, I’ll be looking at new mechanism/functionalities to improve my overall design at the moment.

Idea 01. Idea 02.

Idea 03.

I primarily looked at some sliding type of mechanism as an idea, and some other ones which slide in and out of the device which I think is quite unique, I’ll have to do some further analysis and detailing fully understanding this part. I will also do a critical analysis page after seeing what “Idea 0?” would be the ideal solution for this. Once I complete all these mechanism I’ll pull back my focus onto my prior TFL bus seats and go on with that, this way I will finish them both together.

.104

New Designs/ Development/ Prototyping/ Secondary Research/ New Ideas/ Sliding Mechanism …

I made some few ideas here of some sliding boards that pop out, I got some inspiration from some old Nokia phones which I'm deciding to implement over here on my design.

// Sliding Mechanism

Whilst researching I also found that these window sliding doors are also very efficient, and from my observations seems to be much simpler. If I’m going to be making these designs which seems to be rather small and complex, I think it would be better to make some sort of small sliding ‘rubbing’ slider out of some MDF,

I also looked at some other mechanism on the top right here, this type of wheel sliding mechanism mainly found on desks, and also made some intricate sketch-ups of some sliding mechanism that I could possibly 3D print and add on-to.

I decided to go with some type of flat rubbing mechanism over here. I first started off making the basics of the sliding mechanism, as I started developing it I realized that some elements of it won’t work as well, so I decided to go with this “level” type of thing when you just place it to your suited length. To expand onwards from this, I’ll make a draft model and see the how it works and fix it from there.

.105

// Prototype Sliding Design

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

Main components:

I first started off by making this part right here which actually goes on top, instead of having something that is very complicated, it would be better to have something like this which is much simpler.

Once I completed the top, I showcased it sliding outwards. With this you can actually disconnect the whole board, and has option for basically a custom retractable board which pops in and out.

.106

Here I placed both pieces together to demonstrate how it works. So the bottom piece has these boards which actually fixate and connect them together to move it forwards and backwards comfortably.

Here I’m showing it again but this time I started working on the top layer.

// Handle

Prototype Sliding Design/ Handle/ Moving Handle/ Top Desk Analysis/ Top Desk Further Analysis …

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

When making the approximate size of the handle, I also realised there are some handles that are differently sized by a bit, this can cause the product to not fit in properly. I looked at these type of handles which fit into any handle that is similar in length of that. This also secures the product in place preventing it from moving anywhere else.

Materials/ Here I researched the basics of the this type of holder. It uses some type of material which actually holds something securely in place no matter how little small or big the pole or thing that they’re going to connect with. I then made my own version which is more of a boxier shape (I’ll have all the dimensions later) that will connect onto the pole shown in the drawing demonstration below. And finally I looked at the TFL handle to see how it is shaped and how long I should approximately make it.

.107

= Silicone

After researching I found out that the material that is most preferably used is silicone. These tend to be quite rubbery, hard but almost soft that squeezes things tightly together to secure it in place. So once making the handle I’ll be having to add this particular part in. Once I’m completed the basics, I’ll do a more refined analysis slide with dimension to properly display.

Prototype Sliding Design/ Handle/ Moving Handle/ Top Desk Analysis/ Top Desk Further Analysis …

// Moving Handle

Here I will be looking and doing a bit of analysis and work on my moveable handle or top desk for my model.

Not balanced:

Balanced:

For my moving handle, I firstly looked at the overall handle itself. For it to have a moveable piece I would have to have another block on top of it which acts as a support for the moveable piece. First thing I noticed that was the weight distribution. What I would have to do firstly is make sure that the top part is actually balanced more towards the middle rather than the left. Board:

Demonstration showcasing the moveable board on top.

.108

I then looked into the moveable piece on top. An idea I had from a prototype was to actually make a hole and use that hole to connect to each-other to move. But one flaw that I found that because of the uneven weight distribution, it would be better to have some kind of of cap on the top which stops it from doing so. I made one that is short and the other one that is longer. From my observations it would be more safer to go with the long one as it would also stop it form going downwards.

Prototype Sliding Design/ Handle/ Moving Handle/ Top Desk Analysis/ Top Desk Further Analysis …

// Top Desk Analysis

In this slide I’ll be talking about my final designs and what to expect after these slides.

It might seem that I have forgotten my other part which was basing a wireless board behind the seat, but surely I’ll come back to it after this analysis and a few other slides refining this model. I think with this research I’ll be able to expand and put it towards my other board design, thus making both of my design much better. In this slide I’m going to be analysing these few designs that I’ve already constructed (I’ve also made a few more that are rather similar which is based off my current research) and pick which one to progress with. Design: 01

This is the design that I’ve chose in the previous slides. It’s obviously tailored to my research that I’ve conducted before that which perfectly was specified to it. As I started researching more, conducting and refining my knowledge on some other particular parts, it seems that top desk needs to be changed a little to be suited towards that research (it doesn’t necessarily have to be anything hugely different). I think the overall desk shape appears to be quite small in width, leaving almost no room for pacing your items on top. And the design seems rather boring.

.109

Design: 02

As I’ve said in my previous research, that having that little curve might be annoying, but I think for the benefit of making my top desk fit within the research I’ve conducted. It would be better suited to have this for possibly aesthetic purposes, and some actual usable space really. There might be a possibility of me reverting back to this.

Design: 03

Here is a more experimental type of design rather, it isn’t anything really special or supposedly work with, but I rather tried to develop this design more into my research as I’ve stated. There could be a possibility as well where I might perhaps use this, or instead take some pieces from here and use it on my Design: 01 or perhaps Design: 02, quite the possibility.

Prototype Sliding Design/ Handle/ Moving Handle/ Top Desk Analysis/ Top Desk Further Analysis …

// Top Desk Further Analysis

In this slide I’ll be doing some critical analysis and refinements on my key aspects of this product, that being the handle, sliding desk etc.

Design 01. So, with that previous slide completed, I decided to stick with the original chosen idea. I think there are way too many complications to those other designs, meaning I would have to unnecessarily alter my design which would then result to even more problems for the product. I think I will have to slightly enhance the design a bit, as I’ve stated there isn’t enough desk room so that would be one thing to improve on.

Design 01 – MDF

- Edges are overwhelming, - Not enough adequate space - Small

I firstly wanted to improve the top desk. I realized and stated that it would be too small when I made model for it by making an MDF to see how it would work. So, I increased the overall length for it.

Another thing I changed was the corners. I personally think the smooth corners are way to overwhelming and should be slimmed down a little for more adequate space. Improved Design 01 – MDF

.110

I made a prototype version of the top desk but improved. With this prototype I checked that it had the adequate space needed for something like a computer on top, space underneath, and also can apply the sliding mechanism for this.

With this I made a top section MDF version that I would later use. This is most refined version I have for the top desk which is official.

Further Refinement Handle/ Further Refinement Rotor/ Further Refinement Retractable Desk…

// Further Refinement Handle

This slide will be covering and basically analyzing the designs I picked. Going over what should be correct – what works and not etc. and finally, what to improve that could enhance the overall design.

Design 01. With my top desk finally refined, I can officially work on refining the other parts which will be the handle clip on, the top rotor (moving part), retractable desk, and the space underneath. This will take a few slides, but hopefully after this I will work on my other model which was behind the TFL seats.

I firstly looked at the width of the bar, I measured it and calculated it to be around approximately 1.5” inches or 38mm (round up to 40mm as I will have the silicone parts). These measurements are important here,

I then also looked at the length of this part, I measured it to be around 2” – 2.5” inches, but I went and rounded it to 3” inches, or 70mm around as this is enough space to pop the handle in. Materials. = Wood

.111

Final Handle Design/

Here I measured it accurately and did a bit of development and refining of my already existing handle. I looked into the many critical aspects of these parts, and I think for this particular part I would make it out of wood (or MDF) to be secure when placed down.

Her.

Further Refinement Handle/ Further Refinement Rotor/ Further Refinement Retractable Desk…

// Further Refinement Rotor

In this slide I’ll be refining my motor part,

Rotor 01. Here in this slide, I’m going to do a bit of refinement on the rotor moveable top desk that I have right here, obviously this will be quite a challenge as I’ve already stated the flaws, and I’m ready to fix that. With the prototype I realized that there had to be something on top that would support it from not falling, so in this slide I’ll be looking at that and from there onwards refining it.

Support

So, I’m remaining the circular design, I perhaps thought it would be good to leave it out, but instead it would be better to have it be embedded in it. But I also notice that it would fall off quite so easily, Underneath there is a gap in-between so the part could move.

Here I made a little sketch up of that part, showcasing in 3-D how it would look like, so the actual thickness would be abled to fit in there, there will also be a little gap in-between like where you could move the board around. Once I finish refining every aspect I’ll make a few sketch-ups and make the whole product in the end.

So, with that I decided to have some sort of weight distribution meaning, I would have the embedded hole to put the product on the far-right side of it. With that done, I wanted to add some sort of support which holds it in place, so I made this little overhang on top which will stop it from falling, preventing any further damage as well.

.112

Further Refinement Handle/ Further Refinement Rotor/ Further Refinement Retractable Desk…

// Further Refinement Retractable Desk

Here in this slide, I’ll be refining my retractable desk piece,

Desk Here I looked the retractable part which expands outwards to give you more space. I think I need some refinement into this part of the product, a lot of refinement. So, I have my prototype type done and here I’ll be fixing some parts and looking into some other refinement parts and improving them. And then in later slide once I’m done, I’ll be doing a sketch-up showcasing how it will function and hopefully in the end with a final model for this. Retractable part:

Here I looked at the retractable part, firstly started by doing some measurements inbetween the gaps that it would fit it in, and I went with 10mm, by having 10mm, this gives the person using it to have many different lengths. Another thing with this is that you can pull out the retractable board, The whole side of the board I want it to be around 300mm which is enough to have your phone and your other additional things. For the wireless charging part, I might change it and add it probably underneath which is the little hole to put your phone in.

.113

Here I made a little design showcasing how it would look like, I also added the top board on top and covered in red to show it fully sealed and combined, this design is relatively simple, but I personally think It adds more to the boring design that I had before.

Further Refinement Phone Holder/ Sketch-up Models/ Constructing/ Final Model…

// Further Refinement Phone Holder

Refinement of phone hold slot.

Phone Holder Slot In this slide there isn’t going to be that many changes because I think I’m happy with what I have but instead just do a little bit more detailing and explaining.

I’ll perhaps investigate some type of ergonomics as I see a way to innovate.

I did a few measurements on it, and showcased where the product will be displayed, there wasn’t any bit detailing but rather I explained it. I want to make a tiny little development being instead of having the wireless charging on top, why not have in the slot or have it on both?

Materials.

= Wood

.114

The material that I’m going to be making this product out of will most likely be some sort of wood, preferably MDF as I think this product would collapse if it is some other type of material.

Here I decided that this part could also serve as an arm rest, and obviously resting your arm on this could perhaps be quite uncomfortable, so to fix this, I’ll look into some simple ergonomics. I think this is quite an easy fix.

Here I made sure for this part to have some sort of curve instead so it would be comfortable to relax you arm.

Further Refinement Phone Holder/ Sketch-up Models/ Constructing/ Final Model…

// Sketch-up Models

This slide will be showcasing some investigation into this product that I’m working on. I’m going to be seeing what I could possibly make and have a clear vision on the product.

Developed desk:

I firstly made the bottom handle first (I’ll add the silicones later), just showcasing the foundation of the design which will support it. Also, it has the top circle which will move the top desk around.

The top section which inserts the piece in place while holding it steadily in place. The overhang prevents it from hanging off or falling because of the weight of the objects that would be put on the top.

I then increased the overall size of the board which extends out a bit from the back (making the overall desk a bit bigger), I also added the silicone pieces on the bottom which will hold it in place securely.

Here I inserted the piece, one thing I realized from this sketch-up visualization was that I need an extendable part which fits into there so it could have enough space to be comfortably on your side.

Final Design:

Product Analysis: I think this design has everything that I wanted from the start, with the research and new ideas and development and other sorts of refining made me result in this model. It has some sort of portability, which being the retractable board which you can take out, it has stability with the silicone on the bottom handle which secures it in place, also the top desk moves to your suited position, has a phone slot holder underneath which can be wirelessly charged. I think this is the design that I was looking for, this visualization from the sketch-up definitely helped improve it much more by pointing at the parts where it didn’t go well. I think now it’s time for me to make the final model for this, and a slide. And, to go back to my other side of this project, the TFL backboard.

.115

// Constructing

Further Refinement Phone Holder/ Sketch-up Models/ Constructing/ Final Model… In this slide I’ll be going through my step by step process on constructing my final model for this product.

2D Design Plan: Here is the plan for my laser cutting, I decided to have 6 levels of outward boards, in which I made the base with some engraved lines so I can accurately position them in place. I then also made the sides and the other components to the overall mechanism,

The basic foundation of the sliding mechanism. And the board that goes in-between (at the very end). I also showcased the different levels to it as well, and how it looks all joined together.

.116

I decided to change a few of the dimension of the whole box so the shape could fit in there securely without and big gap revealing the inside of the sliding desk.

Here I decided to re-do it and added one more level to instead so it could extend out much longer, and that way I compared it once again and having that extra room is definitely needed.

// Constructing

Further Refinement Phone Holder/ Sketch-up Models/ Constructing/ Final Model… In this slide I’ll be going through my step by step process on constructing my final model for this product.

Here I added all the walls together and displayed how it would look once all done together. I think it came out pretty nice, but I still need to remove that gap somehow, so I’ll be going back to make the sides a little bit more smaller so It can fit in nicely.

Here I fixed the inside part, and made sure the sides were small enough so the product could fit in properly and securely.

With that part done, I showcased a side by side comparison of the difference, as you can see it’s much better, and appears to be more elegant.

Top Desk:

Here is the other side showcasing where you would insert your phone, Handle Bar:

I also made the handle bar, I just grabbed a piece of wood and cut it to the size I needed, sanded out the edges on the top and cut in-between.

.117

Here I made the final top desk design, I made sure to add the other back part as well for the desk to spin, I’ll add on the other details later, but for so far modelling for the top desk, this is the final outcome.

FINAL DESIGN //

TRANSPORT WIRELESS

CHARGER //

OVERVIEW // Final Product // Design; The finished product is presented in front of you. I’ve researched, modified, developed, and refined several times in order to create what is displayed. I’ve completely made it true to what I’ve envisioned, and I personally believe it doesn’t need anymore development procedures.

DEVICES SHOWCASE //

In this project I didn’t put too much attention to wireless charging, but rather I focused more on this new innovative design – main theme of “wireless” is still apparent on the top and the fold holder. I’ve also slightly altered the scaling for this, making the handle a bit bigger which gives it more durability and support, the added weight here, and on the clamp is efficient. Describing // Design; A portable desk with a retractable slot which has adjustable sizing, positional options for the whole desk, wireless charging phone holder, a lot of space, durability, and support.

I will stay with this design as I realised you can put it on your lap, another thing being how on some bus it also has the holders so you can also put your phone down there,

.88

Is there a point of continuing with this design? I don’t think so I think the design I made fulfilled what I needed to make so everything there works perfectly and comes tougher, so now I could use this design and inspiration later perhaps?

Component 1, // Wireless Charger Lamp

// Wireless Charger Lamp After completing my TFL bus and train designs, I want to finally make a wirelessly charging lamp. This product will be tailored and aimed towards students those who don’t have space in their desk to have both separate items. Lamps are relatively big, and most students who are revising for exams or are doing other sort of work cannot be productive when its at night unless they have their light on (this can be annoying for others in the house who are sleeping at this hour). Lamps provide a way of seeing in the dark without having too much luminance that it lights up every-other room besides it. Those who don’t have that much space in their room cannot afford to fit such a massive lamp in their rooms. Students are also constantly on their phones, and it is always needed to be charged, perhaps somewhere else in their room. I’ll advise a way to create a lamp that has wireless charging functionality integrated to it.

Wireless Charger Lamp: Specification - Compact, (small) - Be abled to wirelessly charge your phone, - Have a wireless phone holder besides it, - Have a simple, yet sophisticated design, theme of minimalism.

These are the things that I need in my product, and finally some design inspirations.

// Brainstorming Ideas

Secondary Research/ Generating Ideas/ Generating New Ideas/ Primary Research/ Developing Shape/ …

// Secondary Research

In this slide I’ll looking at some curvature shapes. I think the reason being is that I want to do something that isn’t as quite linear; I’m very apparent in linear themes that I hardly associate or try to utilise something that is quite curvature. Perhaps this could be a great way at exploring new ideas, Sketches Here I looked at a bunch of arbitrary designs rather based off the pictures alone. I also decided to explore with some more new designs which includes triangular linear, perhaps also adapting and combining both themes together.

This is just foundation to some ideas of design, developing it.

the get my later

From those pieces of research I’ve conducted, I developed onwards and tried to configure out an initial idea from this slide. As I've stated that my design is going to be more minimalism, but I think I need to get ideas from other type of styles, this being kind of a curvature theme going on in which I decided if it was appropriate to use linear triangular forms as well. This exploration will broaden my ideas. Developed Idea -

.06

// Secondary Research

Since I started to explore some of the triangular linear shapes in which I combined with some elements of some smooth curves. I decided to also look at that exactly, and have an inspiration picture (on the right) in which I’m going to use to help settle myself as guideline. This slide will be exactly the same as the previous one, but exploring more triangular shapes. Sketches Here I’ve done exactly the same, but this time exploring shapes that are more to this triangular theme. I went ahead and also applied some of my knowledge and preliminary sketches from my previous slide and utilised it over here. I’m perhaps thinking of adding some type of geometry, or perhaps leave this curvature shapes once I’m developing?

I looked at some architectural buildings, I think I could gain more possible ideas or some type of themes from using this research. So here I’ve created more refined developed ideas using the sketches above; I tried to include some type of individual aspects from that, I also ditched the circular design (I’ll use it later hopefully) and see what I can create, and possibly if needed use that later/ Refined Developed Ideas -

.06

// Generating Ideas In this slide I’ll be generating some ideas using the research I’ve conducted,

I firstly started off by making 3 separate rows of designs which are quite bizarre but are ideas and inspiration for my design later on, this will help create a foundation.

I made some quite unique ideas that are vast from each other but all share the same theme. If I pick one row out of the other, I could still use and utilise these later on when needed for development or some aspects of refinement which I’ve done prior in my part 1 for this project. I chose the second row to further develop and use, reason being because I think the overall design theme stays consistent, and the idea I have envisioned is perfectly suited towards that. I then developed each individual idea by combining particular elements of the shapes by distorting then and making it into some type of sketch plan which I can formulate an idea from.

Final ideas And finally, I made some further development on these ideas – final ideas for this.

.10

// Exploration

Final ideas In this slide I’ll be looking back at my research, and exploring and adapting my knowledge around it.

Sketches-up -

I made some sketch-ups using the provided research to create some new ideas and some first developmental processes. Here you can see I went form more of long oval shape which I’ve done prior in my research, I decided to also include the flat sides which I was doing to keep it flat on the surface (which you can see on the final sketchup).

Here I went back to explore some of the curvature shape that I was initially going for, here I decided to use those generated ideas and try to develop and incorporate some of those elements here. Developed Ideas -

This is a great way of understanding my design and other aspects of this so I can have a clear goal in mind.

Finally I decided to make some developed refined pieces for this research. I believe this research will be beneficial for me later one when making, or adding something to my final design.

// Sketch-up In this slide I’ll be making some sketch-ups to investigate and gain some more knowledge about a particular type of theme I’m going for, so far I’m deciding whether to go with a more subtle curve, or more triangular/linear. With this slide I’ll learn, and also be able to utilise it for my other ideas. Sketch-up – investigation

What I explored here is by halving two circles. I’ve been exploring some circles and I think perhaps developing it onwards by using this investigation/experimenting? I found that these shapes can create a cool wavy pattern.

I also looked at some cylinders, but this time adding some type of line in-between to create this flat design that I explored in my previous projects (TFL research), and I think it does a great combination with linear and perhaps organic. I also decided to implement this on my circle.

Sketch-up – flat top cylindrical

Here I looked back at my flat side research, particularly this one (far left), and decided to apply the same concept but on the top (which I was doing prior). I think this creates a nice flat surface to perhaps put your phone on, and possibly the surrounding projects a light?...

.10

// Secondary Research

Before going any further I decided to look at some light-bulb designs to get an understanding of how they’re designed, some unique designs, and looking at how they project light.

Sketches I looked at every single light bulb design here. You can see I went with something thin, so I decided to add some thickness to it to experiment with some type of light designs. I looked at the other lightbulb designs and combined both, or all three of them together to create a new design. I also looked at the bottom part which is the stand, and I can see they mainly use some sort of cylindrical shape which I have explored in my previous slides.

Lamp Head Designs -

Almost forgot to mention. I also looked at the lamps itself. You can see there are various of unique designs, one being having its light on the side, and the other being most conventional ones. But I think the most conventional ones are the most appropriate here, since I’m already experimenting with cylindrical shapes. Since they have a flat-top this can be very useful, I think I’ll develop from these ideas over here.

// Generating New Ideas These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

Refined Lamp Designs Using the prior slide as research, I utilised it over here and crated some designs using some of those elements. Here I used some more triangular linear type of styles rather than something that has more curvature (which was my initial theme). I think this is more appropriate for the design I have envisioned. I also made some new lamp head designs, I went with more flatter head designs rather than something that can be quite bulky.

Chosen Ideas for further development -

Final ideas -

I’m going ahead and use these designs for further development. I like the linear, triangular shape they have which is rather unique. I broke down those shapes and use some of those features and apply it later on.

.10

// Combining Ideas In this slide I’ll be combing both my generating ideas, and new ideas together. I’ve seen that they’re different from each-other by far, I suggested what if I combined them together to create some new ideas?

Here are the ideas that I’m going to be combining, I obviously picked the ones I’ve chosen and picked out the specific elements for which I want to use to combine and make new ideas.

Chosen Refined Designs -

01.

02.

03.

04.

05.

Here are all the designs I’ve made by combining. I’ve made 5 separate individual designs with their own uniqueness to it; first one I went with more of a naturistic style towards it, almost shaped like some sort of bird, second one more of window styled, linear/triangular shape, third one more of a arbitrary one, but I think I could work with it if I further develop with that design, fourth one is more rather obvious looking towards a lamp, some sort of tripod really, and finally I went with this flower type of design. With these ideas, I’m going to use them to further develop, use some more research to perhaps stylise and make it more refined.

// Primary Research

I decided to go back to when I did some primary research on this these designs before, but I think I could apply it different around this section over here.

Here I decided to look at the subtle curve section, instead of going for something that has more of a larger curve area, why not make it subtle. I also looked at some embedded circles here as-well and some flat sizes again, but with a longer cylindrical frame instead.

Sketches -

New Ideas I then replicated the subtle curve part and also made some more thinner pieces in different variations, I also made some other type of curve but this time going a bit more diagonal and perhaps having some sort of curve in-between them instead perhaps?

.06

// Developed Ideas In this slide I’ll be combing both my generating ideas, and new ideas together. I’ve seen that they’re different from each-other by far, I suggested what if I combined them together to create some new ideas?

Here I made some new developed designs. I used some of my rough ideas and developed them forward to create these refined designs. I also looked at some other particular design that being this “Z” style design in which I realised it has a lot of similarities from my previous research which I could use to further understand this design. From that point onwards I decided to make some more new designs based off that “Z” shaped design (on the bottom).

Inspiration -

Refined Developed Ideas -

Here I made a different angle of the “Z” style looking design. The one on the right has a very strong similarity from my previous research, I think that design could be a great way to further develop in the future, or perhaps now.

.06

// New Ideas These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

Rough Sketches Here I’ve done a bit of research for this particular design, I developed this idea forward and saw that the edges were sides were quite flat, so I decided to make those a bit titled so that could be used as a phone stand instead, making that part wireless.

Sketch-up -

Here I made some models experimenting with some more subtle curves, this is a great way to get an visual understanding for this part, making me sure if I want to go with this part or not.

Also I wanted the light around it to be inside of the interior to be lighten up, also there is some space for more places to put your wireless phone or any other technological device that supports wireless charging.

I’ll perhaps expand on this and change it up or so…

I will do some prototyping towards this design and configure out some new methods or perhaps expand and make it better.

Refined Designs -

I wanted to experiment with some more circular designs, perhaps I’ll look into this more during some prototyping with this particular design, seeing what I can improve and what not. I’ll probably also use these designs later on, I think the subtle curve really takes effect and make the overall model better and stays with minimalism.

.10

// Prototyping I’ll be doing some prototyping,

Construction of the prototype. I made 3 rectangular pieces all in similar length, then slit a quarter of it creating this bend which when I can used to connected the top two ends together.

Finished Prototype - 01

Here is the final constructed model. I think it came out exactly how I planned it to. With this prototyping it could visualise the product in 3D and I could see that there could be parts to improve, that being that M shape possibly, reason being that part is quite unnecessary and could be used for something else.

Here I did some experimenting, I decided to combine those two together to create this uneven ‘x’ shape. Perhaps I could do something with this that I could use later down this project to influence and improve my final ideas. Finished Prototype - 02

I made another prototype here but this time excluding the ‘M’ shape, instead I kept this flatter top which will provide extra room to put your devices on.

// Prototyping Showcasing different angles with models on the prototypes.

Finished Prototype - 01

Prototype - 02

Developed Prototype - 02

I made some development process, here I combined both of my models and placed them in different angles to create new models. These look very familiar to my research that I’ve done previously in part 1, design 1. I think I will take this into consideration and use some elements or perhaps use the whole prototype as inspiration to further improve my design.

// Further Development In this slide I’ll do some further development using the research and understanding of my prototyping to improve my overall model.

I used inspiration from one of the primary research slides I did on my previous slide. I think this design is quite unique and minimal, I think I can work with something like this, I’ll probably adapt this and add it fully into this design.

Here I did some research on the top section in particular. I thought that the “M” shaped piece kind of god a bit boring, so instead I decided to flatten it out on the top using my previous research as example.

Final Design Drawings -

Final Design Sketch-up -

I finally made some sketch-ups to showcase it a more 3D format, better for understanding and visualising

.10

I think the main reason why I did so is because if I have a flatten top, there will be more spaces to put your device on. Also, there isn’t anymore necessary changes, I think this way it’s perfect and fits my specification and fits my adequate research,

FINAL DESIGN //

OVERVIEW // Final Product // Design; This is the finished design; it has a very minimalistic style with subtle curves (almost shaped like a car light), reinforced top with wireless charging on all sections available, this means you can have up to 4 technological devices charging simultaneously. The light is placed in-between the product where it surrounds it like a halo circle, which lightens up the entire interior, giving light outside and inside. I think this design is perfect for the research I’ve conducted. I think perhaps the overall design could be better, but with this final design idea I can further expand my understanding and knowledge thus, making a far more innovative, developed and improved model.

Changes? //; Yes, there could be one thing that could be changed, and that is the overall design. I think it might be a bit too boring, and seeing how many wireless pads there are, it might be prone to getting quite heated up.

Secondary Research/ Generating Ideas/ Generating New Ideas/ Primary Research/ Developing Shape/ …

// Primary Research

In this slide I’m going to be doing some primary research on some waves, and patterns that are similar to a wave (or wavelength).

I drew some refined drawings of some waves, I then developed each individual wave forward to make some designs out of it, it isn’t quite articulate but later we can improve that by developing and applying it elsewhere to create a model.

Sketches -

Waves -

I made some sketches and start investigating and applying other designs and researches that I’ve done previously onto here, (experimenting). I then proceeded to make some models, you can see they have a very similar appearance to my final model, and here I applied it.

With those experimenting designs out the way, I made some developed models by choosing three separate ideas here.

.06

// Secondary Research

In this slide I’m going to be doing some secondary research on some circular shapes, and other cylindrical looking shapes to further enhance my current design idea at the moment.

Sketches -

Here I made some sketches based on that. I decided to develop the circle into a half circle, and used that to create some sort of foundation that goes up and up and gets smaller. This creates some type of design that looks like it could perhaps be attached on the ceiling, or used on the table. I also combined both designs, the circle and the cylinder shape to create some stacked lamp design. Some Ideas -

I then made some preliminary designs that I want to use as inspiration, perhaps develop this onto a design idea I make…

.06

// Formulating New Ideas These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

Refined New Ideas Here I made some new ideas. I looked into every single aspect of my research and I applied it here. I looked mainly at the top section that being the lamp and configured out some ideas from that. I also looked into the different type of thickness to the stands, and other more triangular and boxy ones, also more stacked circular ones.

I also looked into some ones that can pop out, and compress itself like the one on the right here.

Chosen Ideas-

.10

// Design Analysis Analysis of ideas to be chosen later for final,

Design Idea 01 -

For design 01 I went with more of this circular/cylindrical design that stacks each itself by getting smaller on the top. I made a few variations of this design, but I think particular the one on the bottom is idea. You’re probably wondering why I didn’t with something that pops out or compresses, that being because the added weight of the devices won’t allow it to – design is going to be delicate and rather small, and it to project light I will need some type of material that will do. I’ll look into some light reflections and a way how to produce more light out of something, and I’ll be probably experimenting with something like that. Another thing to notice that the light here will product a high radius, but unfortunately I don’t see any space here to put your phone down for wireless capabilities, but I’m sure we can do that to some innovation towards the design, So, I’ll look into this design and further develop it.

Design Idea 02 -

For design 02 I made a series of different and unique ideas. I went with the most conventional one being that lamp, and I experimented further using that lamp to create these two other designs. The design on the top shows a plan of some type of light which will come out in an ‘X’ formation (which I’ve done in my prototyping), and I used more linear, triangular type of features towards this to experiment. It has slanted sides which can be used to place your device for wireless charging… I think there can be more room to further develop and see into other ideas and adapt it into this design. I might choose some specific elements to further develop with my chosen design, lets say perhaps the slanted sides, but overall I don’t think I’m going forward with these designs.

// Design Development In this slide I’m going to be producing some new design ideas from this, and formulating some new designs.

Chosen Idea I’ve chosen design 01, I think there could be more room to further develop, and how it differs from every other conventional lamp.

Refined New Developed Idea -

// Formulating New Ideas In this slide I’ll be developing some designs,

Chosen designs -

I looked at all my designs, but I think I want to really forward with these designs here. I think they’ll fit ideally with my specification, and research I’ve conducted, all I must do now is further development.

Here I made some sketch-ups to see visually how different concepts would work with cylindrical shapes, for instance I looked at whether I could embed that into a shape, and the other one to make into some type of handle or lamp stand. Refined ideas -

I made some refined ideas using that basic research. There wasn’t anything more I needed since I had all the elements from previous research and here, so I have good understanding and knowledge on these parts. Refined designs -

// Formulating New Ideas These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

Refined designs -

These are some refined chosen designs I’ve picked form my previous slide, as you can see my development process, I chosen to enhance the shape of the cylinder and add this curve half circle top to it. Perhaps I can go for more of a subtle curve shape, but I’ll look more into it after some more secondary research.

Here I made some development process looking at some other ideas from my previous slide in which I’m going to combine it with my refined ideas on top to see what I’ll make. This can further influence my designs and make it overall better. Combined designs -

I made some new designs which I’ve combined using both drawings. As you can see I enhanced them quite a lot. I went with this tilt design which I've used the handle as research, I also made these unique and almost like a shell type of design at the end in which I used the circle and halved them to create these designs.

// Secondary Research

I realise that I was making quite a lot of linear, triangular, almost geometric type of designs during my research and design ideas. I decided it would be beneficial to do some research on some triangular, geometric shapes.

I primarily looked at some plan designs, but further developed by combing both of the sharpness and triangular formation, and the overall geometric shape of the first image. I decided to look back at more lamp designs that I’ve previously done and tried making new ones, but this time adding in the more geometric shapes to it, As you can see I added this more slanted design on each end, I decided to go more of a octogen shape towards it, experimenting and seeing what I can make out of it. I then made a final design here in which I’ll look more into and further develop.

.06

Final design idea -

// Further Development Compressing designs, portability, origami?

Now here I made another design and I’m going to be experimenting with some portability, perhaps compressing idea here.

Here I’ve done a bit of development drawings and I went back and looked at the compressed portability idea… What if I could make the product go from a solid secure shape into something that compresses? This is quite ambitious so I’ll do a bit of research and refinement of design and seeing what I can do with that. Experimenting -

If I would have to do this, I would also want the model to come back into shape without it losing its ends. So I’ll have to think about that, so far the only idea I have is to have some sort f advanced mechanism? Understanding -

Here I made some unique models using some sort of compressing technique; I made these to understand how to compress, how will it spring back perhaps (or fold back), and to see different variations of this design.

.10

// Further Development Here I’ll be looking into my final ideas and designs for this project.

Before we go into the final designs and refinement, I decided that I look at more different refined ideas and fix a final solution or design and work with that before proceeding.

Refined final ideasTo make the designs connect I looked at making some holes in the sides and using some type of string to tie them together so they wouldn’t fall apart.

I decided to go back and combine my designs with the oval cylinder designs. I think because the shape is far to ambitious to be a lamp, or some sort of object that projects light and has wireless capabilities. I made a few designs and a small development process. I made a few with some circular shapes, but I didn’t personally like it or saw any value from it, instead I stick with hexagon octagon styled shapes instead.

Here I did some sketch-up experimenting with different levels of that, and if compressing on the top is good or not.

Sketch-ups -

Chosen final designs -

.10

// Design Analysis Analysis of ideas to be chosen later for final,

Design Idea 01 -

I really like the design for this, I think its quite simple and has everything that is needed for this design I believe. There is also a few parts that probably do need innovating but I think that’s fine and it does the job. There isn’t anymore to say for this product, but I think there can be “some” ways to further innovate is by having some sort of compressing that compresses the product on the top, and perhaps use the space inbetween where the light is going to be placed. I think I could possibly opt for the other design instead seeing that it has much more space?...

Design Idea 02 -

For this design I went with a hexagonal shape towards and with the slanted edges for wireless charging. There is more wireless capabilities for this product here, and I think it would luminate light much better considering there is more space in-between. There isn’t anything else to say rather, but that it would be more easier to fold it up together than the other design, or I could probably scrap that and go with something different, lets say making it all glass so it can luminate throughout. I think I’ll go with design 02 seeing that is has more to offer to without destroying any of my specification rules. It’s minimal, can fold, and lights up as a lamp.

// Smart Materials And finally, I’ll be looking at some smart materials.

// Further Development Here I’ll be looking into my final ideas and designs for this project.

Looking at the design analysis and refining and picking out the design I want to continue with.

.10

// Final Models These are ideas that came from the knowledge of my secondary research. I used aspects of the designs that I particularly like, and used it to create quick sketches. This will be inspiration for my development, I'll then pick out aspects of these sketches and combine to making a fully developed piece.

First steps, -

Development, -

Here I constructed both models to see visually which one is better. For the first two models on the left I went with the four sides, and made circles in-between and put string through it to connect it together, with that I also made circular cylindrical shape which I attached it with a clip to it (perhaps experimenting?) For the other design, I went with the one I initially chose, and also experimented it being able to fold together; I also made some circles and added strings through it to connect it, this made it able to make it foldable. But with that it becomes rather inconsistent to fold and since I also have to put in some source of light it cannot fold into each-other, otherwise, the light bulb will break. Design Idea 01 So instead, I’ll be using this design as my final design/model. I think it has a solid base with it able to luminate light from the top without it being flimsy as-well. Now with this model I want to further progress and make a finish final model.

Final Design -

And finally, I used some red cloth which are similar in and used that to connect the overall design together. Once I constructed the overall shape, I also decided to make the top covered (since its cloth, light will go thru it, giving it a slight warm luminance). I then inserted a light source underneath and then took a picture to showcase the design. I think for the overall light colour I will go with something that is more warm, so orange and red is perfectly fine.

.10

// Constructing Here I’ll be showcasing my constructing process on sketch-up of my final model. There will be a few changes along the way that will change the possible appearance of the design.

I firstly made the base of the sketch-up which is relatively simple, with that I found a slight problem, that being that the design wasn’t slanted enough because the edges weren’t far enough, so for that reason I decided to make it longer by around 1 – 2 inches which solved the problem.

From that point onwards I made it’s height and attached all the lines together to create the shape, with that I created a whole on the top which the light will luminate from.

From the models I’ve made, I also made the final sketch-up here translucent, perhaps glass with that it could luminate the surroundings more efficiently, thus being a much better lam.

FINAL DESIGN //

OVERVIEW // Final Product // Design; This is the finished design; it is a minimalistic, geometric, prism shaped lamp with additional wireless charging including within it. It is compact and has up to four sides of wireless charging for any individual device with lighting providing throughout your desk. This product is perfect for those who don’t have any space in their desk, a big clunky lamp wouldn’t be ideal for a small desk. It also has wireless charging capabilities, having your phone close to you whilst charging standing up for easy access. Conclusion, thoughts //; I think I provided and met the specification requirements. It’s almost simplistic yet has such a sophisticated design for lamp which is quite unusual, but rather unique. I believe there isn’t anything that needs to be changed, I met the criteria and made a finished, working design.

PORTABLE WIRELESS CHARGER // OVERVIEW // Client // Interview; Zakariya is a 22-year-old Business student in his third year at the University of Westminster. He wants something portable, and can fit in his pocket or back on the go. Final Product // Design; The finished product is presented in front of you.
