Choosing Wisely Update – April 2014 Featured This Month Consumer Reports launched an in-depth, online, and publicly available hub on antibiotics. The hub includes: 

   

A new "round-up" of Choosing Wisely antibiotics-related materials, including an overview of antibiotic overuse, brief sections on the Choosing Wisely antibiotic-related topics, and advice from Reports about reducing overuse. A new Choosing Wisely antibiotics poster called "5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor Before You Take Antibiotics" and a Best Buy Drugs poster called "5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor Before Starting a New Drug." Articles from Consumer Reports and Wikipedia on antibiotic use and misuse. A number of videos covering antibiotics overuse. Links to the CDC's Vital Signs fact sheet and MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) on reducing antibiotic overuse among hospitalized patients.

New Tools & Resources 

The Michigan Health Information Alliance created an "Ask the Specialist" video focused on Choosing Wisely, the five questions and the patient, provider, and employer perspectives of the campaign.

AARP published a cover story on Choosing Wisely in their March bulletin. It's called "Doctors Say: Skip These Tests."

The AAFP has created a search tool for Choosing Wisely recommendations.

New Consumer Reports consumer brochures this month: o Health Checkups: When You Need Them--And When You Don't (Society of General Internal Medicine) o Treating Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Popular Supplements Don't Work (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) o Dental Fillings that Contain Mercury: Removing them is a bad idea (American College of Medical Toxicology & American Academy of Clinical Toxicology)
