Recently PrimaryOne Health’s CACs have undergone training to become Community Health Workers (CHW). This training enables the assistors to further serve the individuals they enroll in insurance. PrimaryOne’s CACs now connect the newly insured to healthcare and social services by assisting them in navigation. PrimaryOne offers specialized CHWs for a wide variety of populations including Hispanics, Somalians, new mothers, and the homeless. John and his team shared their experiences with the training program, and why they decided to pursue the certification. If you have questions regarding the CHW training program, please contact one of the PrimaryOne Health team members. A part of her presentation touched on UHCAN Ohio’s effort to collect stories from the recently enrolled regarding their experiences with insurance and enrollment. The learning group expressed an interest in having Nita return to present on this story collection process in more detail. If you are interested in partnering with UHCAN in their efforts to collect stories, please contact Nita (ncarter@uhcanohio.org). 1
Questions and Comments Regarding Story Collection Stories are important, but it can be difficult for assistors to assure the individuals they help that they are not being exploited. We often look for stories, but it has the potential to limit the effectiveness of an assistor due to it causing distrust. Important to keep stories focused on general details about enrollment and insurance. Important for assistors to have a unified message when we are asked if coverage is affordable. We ask enrollees to share their healthcare experience not share their story. This requires a change of mindset for assistors, because we are taught to never contact the people we serve. Individuals have developed a relationship with the assistor/clinic helping them, not the federal government. Important to think about who is putting their trust on the line when collecting their story. One approach would be to convene a focus group of the recently insured that could respond to specific topics. This way you could target individuals that are open to sharing their experiences. Open Discussion Manju Sankaparra from the Ohio Asian American Health Coalition shared that her organization has been awarded a grant to conduct an assessment of effective ways to assist vulnerable and difficult to reach populations. This assessment would survey the recently insured to determine the effectiveness of various outreach and enrollment techniques. OAAHC will provide a small monetary award to organizations partnering with them on this assessment. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Manju (msankarappa@oahcoalition.org). Please share key reflections or comments you have regarding the Navigator & CAC Learning Group and/or today’s session.
Good discussion of need to gather data/stories Great info! I found the presentation on CHW’s very helpful. This is a good way to think about how to use enrollers and the relationship they have built. I liked hearing from another group how I can help my community beyond just healthcare insurance enrollment. I liked hearing the examples from PrimaryOne of what is working to reach folks. It was helpful to hear barriers to story collection. PrimaryOne presentation was excellent! Its refreshing to learn how much the organization has invested in their outreach workers. Really appreciated hearing PrimaryOne individuals speak. This meeting was great!
What topics and/or questions would you like to explore at future learning group meetings?
I would like to have someone come in and go through all required documents for pregnant immigrant women. Big problem is people being denied for documents not being sent.
