May 12, 2017 Regional Learning Session Learning Session Summary On May 12th the Healthcare Collaborative of Greater Columbus hosted a Regional Learning Session focused on what employers are doing to improve healthcare value. Three speakers were invited in to share perspectives of what is happening on a national, state, and regional level. All of the slides used by the presenters can be found by visiting our website: http://www.hcgc.org/2017-learning-sessionsarchive/ Kristof Stremikis, Associate Director for Policy, Pacific Business Group on Health 

Kristof shared his perspectives on what employers are doing to improve healthcare across the country. His presentation covered multiple examples including a maternity toolkit, center of excellence, and direct ACO models. Kristof also offered some best practices for engaging employers in improvement work.

Monica Juenger, Director of Stakeholder Relations, Office of Health Transformation 

Monica shared information regarding Ohio’s efforts to start CPC throughout the state. The program will enhance Medicaid reimbursements to providers to improve quality and ultimately reduce costs. The State is promoting the plan to employers as a way to help manage healthcare costs and improve the value of care.

Kenny McDonald, Senior Vice President, Columbus Partnership 

Kenny shared information on the role of the Columbus Partnership to attract new employers to our region. Traditionally the Partnership has promoted healthcare availability and ease of access as the region’s selling points. Increasingly though healthcare value is becoming more of a focus for employers interested in moving to a new location.

What are the opportunities and challenges of the employer initiatives that were discussed today?           

Collaboration is both an opportunity and a challenge. Data—What do we want to measure; how define variables? As products/services change, what we measure will change the data problem will be a moving target for a long time. Focus on health information connectivity. Focus on wellness and disease prevention. Healthcare policy impacts all! I appreciated Kristof’s presentation and would like to learn more about the models/pilots he shared. I fully appreciate and can echo the “employer’s resistance”. Increasing awareness of small/mid-sized employers continues to be a challenge. Link HCGC with Columbus 2020 to be sure our regional health data on our population in Central Ohio is seen as attractive to companies who are considering coming here. Healthy employees are not only more productive they are less expensive, especially if the employer is self-insured. Number of people in workforce/skills of those workers. Raising collective voice of employers to those that they choose to administer their health benefits and financing of same for change. This is because especially larger payers are prone to the “status quoism” unless pushed repeatedly by their customers.

  

Right people for the right jobs. Rise in interest among large employers is definitely an opportunity. Translating theory and logic into action.

What employer initiatives are taking place in Columbus to improve healthcare value?       

Attraction of progressive companies to Columbus. Share those case studies with others. Need to discuss/address healthcare costs not just healthcare organizations in the region. Increased presence of onsite health and wellness clinics at employers. Investments in health literacy. Investments in primary care models. Movement from FFS to outcomes. Narrow/quality networks. Not aware of any.

What did you learn today that will impact your work?          

Columbus 2020 presentation was interesting however healthcare value/impact wasn’t really addressed. Connect our health centers more directly with employers that are nearby—improved access to care, a focus on prevention, ability to save money for healthcare and employees. Enjoyed the brief State of the State on Repeal and Replace. Existence of Columbus 2020 and potential relevance in optimizing same for building a more organized single employer voice in Central Ohio. Good speakers and content. It’s helping to frame how our activities around collaboration are/will benefit the community and enhance economic growth. Healthdoers Network access. Impact on regional economy that healthcare has. Loved the creative thinking and implementation from PBGH. Overview of initiatives that are helping reduce healthcare costs was very helpful. What was the third presentation? I don’t need a justification of the Ohio CPC program.

What questions or comments do you have regarding the session?   

As a non-clinician, I felt today's topics were much more interesting and accessible than usual. Great information for a wide audience. You did a great job of making all topics relevant to everyone. Thanks! I enjoyed each of the presentations, the information and point of view gives me a broader understanding of the complexities and considerations that impact all segments. As a person representing the carrier side it may be helpful to meet with the HCGC team to go over what the carriers are already doing as it relates to solutions that impact cost of care so that others are aware of what is already available in the market. Some of what the larger employers have done on their own is already available through Anthem. Was shocked at the low attendance. Maybe the topic, employers seeking coverage, is not one that attracts providers.
