Solobalapan and its surroundings have such potential transit points yet still have not been integrated. This location becomes transit node point which connecting railway link, inter and intra city bus line, and airport railink. Hopefully by designing an integrated transit hub, this area can thrive and become the new public transportation gate of Surakarta. Furthermore, this area is located in a transition between the city center of Surakarta and the northern part of the city called Solo Utara, known as less developing district of the city. Hence, this transit hub design is also expected to become the development catalyst of the district. In this design, I applied sustainable master plan approach to help Surakarta has better transportation plan in the future, to promote people using better shifting methods by walking, biking, and utilizing public mass transportation. For the micro focused design object, adaptive reuse and metaphoric design approach, to preserve the existing heritage building and to promote the wisdom of the city in its massing philosphy.

Background
Solobalapan is Solo’s transportation meeting point, connecting railway, intercity bus, Batik Solo Trans (BST), airport via railink, Jogja-Solo commuter line and other public transportation mode. This design has purpose to integrate all the mentioned transportation mode to create a one stop transit area and so to create a new experience in using public mass transportation. Implementing transit oriented development theory approach, this transit node is expected to attract people to enjoy a new transiting method by walking, cycling, and using public mass transportation for promoting city’s sustainable transportation along to be the catalyst factor for the surrounding area in specific and for the development of the northern part of Solo in general.

Wayfinding Design On a transit oriented master plan design, a circulation holds key role to know whether the design has reached its purposes or not. A transit oriented master plan design can be successful if there are not any prone crossings between the vehicles. Furthermore, a successful master plan design can be indicated by how the users in the area could easily find its best route to reach their destination without any significant problems, which in this case, the signage helps a lot.

Mass Forming
Inspired by existing heritage buildings, maintained as one of the masterplan’s vocal point. Applying adaptive reuse approach, using metaphoric massing of the existing heritage’s legacy.
The wide spanning roof covered the whole railway station, applying mixed metaphoric approach as its philosophy. The roof also have the cut off part which showing the existing heritage buildings inside.

In order to fulfill the users’ needs of transiting, there are outbuildings such as transit hotel and skybridge convenience tenants. These additional buildings design also applied local wisdom philosophy as their form findings.
Sustainable and green architecture are also taking part of the masterplan’s design, in this case the parking building and the northern transit plaza

Concept Implementation The Solobalapan Transit Area Masterplan also includes the city macro scale planning as its design. The plan is to elevate the railway above the ground level. This decisions
based on: Ÿ
Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ
If the elevated railway is built along the city, there will be no more road and railway crossings that may cause traffic jams, especially at RM. Said St. (Pasar Nongko) and S. Parman St. (East of Solobalapan Station) and can be continued to Joglo crossing. It wont block any surroundings economy object. Environmental problems that caused by the construction can be reduced. Better wayfinding design inside the Solobalapan Transit Area.

Umbul Tirtomoyo is a water spring and reservoir in conjunction with Umbul Tirtomoyo spring, which has smaller size. For years, this site was neglected and unkempt. The local village authority asked UNS for the site’s revitalization, and so under Mrs Sri Yuliani, S.T., M.App.Sc.,’s supervision, I was appointed to be the architectural designer of the project. The concept of the design is to make a public spring park that can be taken its advantage for creating new economic activities for the local people. Beside of that, this new design of Umbul Tirtomoyo can preserve the two spring sources, Umbul Tirtomoyo itself and the smaller Umbul Tirtomulyo.

Semarang is one of the five major cities in the country that currently still developing to be one of MICE cities in Indonesia. As the most populated and diverse metropolitan area in Central Java, Semarang acted as the referred city to many activities occurred. To accommodate those factors, MICE building was proposed at this 6th architectural studio and mixed to Art Institute towers. Art Institute was chosen to be mixed with MICE function as the consideration that Semarang is a city which come from such a diverse culture society, that perfectly live in harmony side by side even formed a new syncretic culture combined. This argument becomes the background why the Art Institute was chosen to be designed.

Final Mass Forming Concept Metaphoric Concept of Javanese Gunungan Symbol All components of this design use the gunungan wayang design metaphor, either master plan layout, the vertical building mass, or the facade. The choice of this form because gunungan has a very deep philosophy regarding life, so it is expected that the users of the institute-MICE building complex can apply it in every activity.

Metaphoric Concept of Javanese Joglo Housing The roof of the MICE mass takes Javanese Joglo roof metaphor, which having purpose whether to be aesthetical concern and so the lattice that arises between differences in roof heights is used as natural lighting and natural ventilation inside the building.
