CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT CENTER Location: Louisiana Professor: Mark Pasnik Date: Spring 2019 Group Project The Creative Development Center is a continuation based from last semester’s proposed design; The Entrepreneurial Center. The original design features two insertions, social and opportunity, that run along a common axis within the building. Our design accentuates this axis by making it an open atrium space that runs the entire height and length of the building. This acts as a “spine” surrounded by solid mass on each side. The spine acts as a main connection to the neighborhood; it runs parallel to North Claiborne, provides views at either end of the building and creates inviting access points to the adjacent lots. “Special Boxes” highlight key programmatic elements that are either projecting outward from the mass and away from the spine, or further into the mass and penetrate the spine. The movement is dependent on site context, where boxes towards North Claiborne project outwards as an invitation to visit and subtract inwards along the residential neighborhood. These “special boxes” are composed of glass and are encased with a screening system. This screening element brings importance to these “special spaces”, as well as provide shade and intriguing shadows inside the building.

AXIS DANCE COMPANY Location: Cambridge, MA Professor: Ingrid Strong Date: Spring 2018 Comprehensive Studio: Group Project The AXIS Dance Company is a contemporary dance studio and school located in Oakland, CA. The company consists of able-bodied and disabled dancers. Using wheelchairs, hands, feet, and torsos, the dancers perform interactive, kinetic choreographed pieces. AXIS is 50% professional company, 50% dance school. This is a new building design for the company, located on Church Street in Cambridge, MA. The design responds to context (geography, topography), climate (sun, wind, light and water), and culture (patterns of interaction rising from human occupation of place). By redefining the front of the building and revitalizing the alleyway, it allows the separation of the building to create a social and artistic gathering space which helps give accessibility to everyone and construct the flexibility and containment of the program and thresholds throughout the building.

ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH CENTER Location: Chestnut Hill Reservoir Professor: Myrna Ayoub Date: Fall 2016 Located at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, the Ecological Research Center is designed for local elementary schools and summer camps to emphasize environmental education. There’s often the question of whether a formal or informal learning program is the right way to go. This building integrates both formal and informal ways of education in order to incorporate all types of learning styles. The building creates a transition from “city to landscape” through the deconstruction of the building through unraveling. As you walk through this building the program used for learning is very structured and becomes more and more hands on until the visitor is actually integrated into the natural landscape and can experience what they’ve learned in nature. A full understanding of environmental education is obtained through the classrooms, exhibition areas, environmental library, art education studios, rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and vernal pools included in this research center.
