Growing up in a regional city along the east coast of Australia has provided me with a sense of pride and responsibility to the environment (built & natural), the supporting ecosystems and the people inhabiting these special places. Such spaces that instil joy, forge new relationships, bolster the native flora & fauna and enhance the experience of those who enter. This is why I chose to pursue a career in Architecture. Whether a space or building is within the public or private realm, architecture can act as a tool for creating, exploring, reinventing and defining our culture. This is the foundation of place-making for me.

Thomas’s Junior School Kensington Change of Use + Retrofit + +
architectural portfolio Aug.22 andrew hannah-davies
Our second school project for Thomas’s London Day Schools, this instance involved a change fo use application for an existing student accomodation building to become the new consolidated educational facility for existing Thomas’s Kensington school sites. The brief was to create 23 dedicated classrooms, dining facilities and specialist learning & learning support areas and external outdoor play areas. From project inception I worked closely with the client and school operational teams to assist in determining student enrolment capacities and develop Thomas’s new educational framework. This was followed by submitting multiple planning applications and tender information under a design & constructcontact.

Overview of the Site History
he property was initially constructed in 1860 and formed of three stories, called Lytham House. This was subsequently transferred into Kensington High School in 1897. As the school prospered a series of extension were added: 1. Additional story above the property to 4 stories (1900’s)
Figure 3 2: Historical Photo from 1900’s
The East side of the building was demolished during WWII. The school then vacated the premises during this time, and the East of the building was redeveloped in the early 1950’s, which comprised of a 3 story concrete framed building and now the building in its entirety forms part of Richmond University campus. The building is formed on a relatively flat site, with various steps within the lower ground floor.
Atlantic House though not listed was located within the De Vere Conservation area in Kensington, therefore all design interventions required to be considerate and subserviant to the existing building

Ourfabric.architectural design interventions involved rationalising the eastern wing to reflect the key characteristics listed in planning regulations from Kensington & Chelsea borough council, general upgrades to meet London Plan 2021 requirements. This also included landscaping for varying playground types and a glazed structure linking the two buildings forming the new entry, staff offices & student circulation area of the school.

Thomas’s Junior School Kensington Key Design Strategies
The existing building Lytham House & Atlantic House, originally built in the 1860’s with a mix of steel frame, timber and concrete hollow-pot slab construction was heavily outdated and due to the nature of the change of use application, furthermore this triggered the requirement to upgrade the building from access & fire safety standards.

inspections with structures, MEP and civil engineers on-site to assess how and where demolition & alterations works should take place. The scope of demolition works were liaised and coordinated with temporary works contractors to ensure proposed design would not impact the construction programme. This included steering the project away from a complete facade retention demolition strategy, to only partial demolition and retention of existing steel, timber and concrete hollow-pot construction. As part of the demolition and new build construction, we were required to meet local planning regulations including Part B, Building Butlletin 100 (BB100) and also the new London Plan 2021; incorporating fire evacuation lifts, room occupancy & evacuation policies, prevention of external spread of flame and smoke, compartmentation and travel distances.

needed to be contrasting and subservient to the existing facades of Lytham House and Atlantic House. This was achieved by setting back the new main entry and treating the new link building in a bespoke frameless curtain wall allowing light and air to pass into the centre of the building and all main circulation areas. The existing stucco banding and feature window lintels of the existing buildings formed a datum for locations of curtain wall mullion and Thetransoms.existing facades were to be cleaned, repaired, repointed, stucco features repaired and all existing windows replaced with double glazed low-E coated glazing to meet targeted U-values. All demolitions, alterations and additions to public frontages were coordinated with heritage planners throughout.

Proposed 2024 Education Masterplan. 2021 Day to day Circulation & Supervision Diagram. 2021 Maximum Building Envelope Concept Sketch. 2021 I joined the project immediately after gaining planning approval from Wandsworth borough council, beginning the technical design process with a small team of consultants. The client requested several further alterations and feasibility studies to investigate how the site could provide further educational and commercial gain. With the original design brief and speed of the procurement process & construction programe, the initial design team only designed for the provision of 18 general learning spaces, secondary service and administrative areas, upon joining the team I worked closely with staff members at their adjacent school to develop a future-proofed educational masterplan targeting student enrollments up to 2027. This new masterplan aimed to provide dedicated learning & support facilties factoring in student enrollment growth, educational hierachy throughout the scool site, student circulation, entry & egress and effective passive supervision of students as the school is intended to work amoung the existing network of Thomas’s school around south-west London.

Proposed Eastern Street Elevation, Guild Living at Walton on Thames. 2020 Guild Living at Walton in partnership with Legal & General is the third project from this client focusing on delivering urban later living models. I worked under within a small team to develop this project from stage 1 design through planning to stage 4 detailed design. Guild Living at Walton being C2 use class comprised 193 residencies, 26 transitional care suites, specialist care residencies, communal wellbeing facilities and a occupational therapy centre. My role initially involved assisting the team preparing PPA packages and the Design & Access Statement to Elmbridge Borough Council to get the project through planning. Through subsequent stages I worked heavily to coordinate MEP & structures and interior design.

BENEATH THE SURFACE ACADEMIC PRACTICE - PT. 2 THESIS
//
26
Within the final year of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Newcastle, students have the option to undertake a project and design brief of their choosing. Beneath the Surface was a year long investigation into the complexities of rural towns and exploration of phenomenology in architecture. The project theoretically proposes redevelopment of the existing facilities and surrounding landscape of the famous healing waters at Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre in rural north-west New South Wales, Australia.

Beneath the Surface Taking the Waters in Moree
Freedom Ride: a freedom rider remembers, Ann Curthoys 2002 Personal Artwork depicting Freedom Ride Journey. Dec 2017
The redevelopment of the Artesian Baths highlights these past, present and future issues of the site and greater context of Moree by providing experiential thresholds culminating with the user walking into the famous healing waters. It is a bold demolition of the old, cleansing away the collective negative memory of the past via acknowledgement of that past, with poetic reconstruction of the new.
As a site of cultural and historical significance, the mineral waters of Moree Baths were a catalyst for change during the student Freedom Rides led by Charles Perkins that were highly influential to the 1967 referendum and Indigenous rights.
“No person, being a full-blooded or half-caste aboriginal native of Austra lia, or being a person apparently having an admixture of aboriginal blood, shall use or occupy or be present in or upon, or be allowed or permitted or invited to use or occupy or be present in or upon, the premises of the Council known as Memorial Hall...

AND that no such person as aforesaid shall use or occupy or be present in or upon, the premises of the council known as the Bore Baths or in or upon any of the Buildings or places enclosed here with”.
The proposal tackles an issue commonly found within regional towns in Australia; being racism and more specifically the local Indigenous population excluding themselves as a result of past clashes.

The most prominent modification to the site was in the form of a long horizontal cut into the landscape stretching from each street east and west allowing entry and neutral passage into the water.
The new plan was heavily informed by circular geometry, more specifically a yarning circle. A place where participants are provided with an opportunity to have their say in a safe space without judgment. A form which naturally encourages deep listening, sharing of knowledge and establishes rules of respect.
The built form was designed to present a narrative recreating the infamous clash all those years ago via a series of thresholds culminating with 34 steam exhaust pipes symbolising those who came at Moree Baths was home to the most violent clash between the protesters, aborigines and the settler community. This event would form the key component and narrative from which my project aimed to acknowledge.
The current planning breaks the laneway link to the residencies adjacent from north to south and treats the boundary with harsh steel fencing only addressing the north facade of Anne Street. The main public entry, uninviting, restrictive to the community and with little acknowledgement to the work of Charles Perkins and the Freedom Rides.

Moree
The space between the public to private, the threshold. This was where the user can experience the narrative of the architecture and place. A space which disrupted the apparent continuity and normality of every day areas, I communicated this through the senses; the materiality of the built form, the sound of the water echoing at a higher level as you enter a room covered with ceramic tiles or placing the primary circulation path through the rising steam providing a feeling of discomfort and pressure as the user passes by. This threshold space welcomes the user and indicates how remaining areas functions, how they are inhabited and what is to be expected of the user inside. Final Elevation Drawing. Nov 2017

33 architectural portfolio Aug.22 andrew hannah-davies // PART 2 THESIS - BENEATH THE SURFACE I presented the project narrative with physical models, drawings, videos and posters inspired by the Art Deco heritage of Moree during the time of the clash and the symbolism of unearthing what lies beneath. The primary new bathing space was designed to embrace the material that makes the site and baths so special. Sunken one metre below natural ground encased in sandstone, the thermal pool purifies the user ‘s skin as it would purify rainwater through underground aquifers.

Beneath the Surface was the culmination of my belief that water and aquatic environments can heal and break down the social & physical barriers for the good of the community. I was lucky enough to be nominated to present my project to the Australian Institute of Architects NSW chapter and subsequently be selected as the winner amongst my peers from the four architecture schools within the state. I was honoured to receive the award from Andrew Nimmo of Lahznimmo Architects, president of the AIA NSW Chapter.

Following the conclusion of my studies, I was fortunate enough to be offered work at SHAC and more importantly, to work on the offices newest and largest education project from the absolute inception of the project. The project was an existing government primary school which had only opened three years prior, which now required seventeen permanent teaching faculties in place of the temporary demountables and reorientation of public access roads to suit the new surrounding development. Additional outcomes included rehabilitation of an existing koala habitat corridor and also masterplanning the future growth potential of the campus to accommodate three times the current student enrollment with minimal disruption to ongoing school operations. I worked as the project job captain acting under two directors managing the project with a small team comprising of interior designer’s, technicians and students. This project provided invaluable knowledge and experience in masterplanning, urban planning, stakeholder management, consultant coordination, authority approvals and the application of contemporary educational pedagogy into built form.

Myself and the supervising directors developed schemes for each new learning neighbourhood block freehand. The project team aimed to strike a balance between form and materiality of the existing buildings on-site and a form which supported contemporary educational pedagogy for primary school students. Each block had to provide 4 permanent learning environments plus the ability to be easily adapted to allow for an additional 2 to be added in future. Constant and immediate connection to the natural environment and the ability to allow for shared teaching spaces were the driving factors for the final design.

Concept
A great deal of significance was placed on achieving an excess of student play space in order to future-proof the masterplan if for any reason the school was required to expand in the future, another learning neighbourhood could be added without requiring additional student play space. Another key element of the masterplan was to integrate active play space with the koala habitat corridor located directly adjacent of the school providing outdoor educational facilities linked to the natural environment. The most significant brief design outcomes were the reorientation of the school entry from the west to the east plus the addition of 17 permanent teaching spaces. We achieved this by breaking up each learning stage into 4 individual neighbourhood blocks within two major civic & educational precincts all linked by a central landscaped circulation corridor. Throughout the masterplanning phase, the most important aspect of the design was the ability to maintain school operations throughout the construction process.

Myself and team leaders consulted with members of the community including staff and students to deliver an allinclusive holistic educational environment which functions practically for day to day schools operations. Teachers, special education staff, cleaners, local indigenous groups, external after-school care providers and weekend sporting organisations were among the many groups we consulted as a part of this ongoing process. At its core each typical learning neighbourhood floor plan was planned to provide a variety of spatial settings for a range of different learning modes; encouraging inquiry and critical thinking, develop independence and is supported by 21st century technology. Applying knowledge on contemporary education models, myself and the interiors team curated each learning neighbourhood to be specific to each learning stage of the students. Materials and finishes representing the immediate native Australian bush environment adjacent to the school, assisting to inform the educational pedagogy that is integrated into the design.

- Review all sub-consultants quality, safety and management plans where required.
From the outset, the project was to be procured as a selective tender from a government approved contractors list as a Design & Construct contract initially issued at 66% completion leaving the final 34% to be completed alongside the successful contractor. This documentation process ultimately proved to hinder to progress as there was no clear line of where to finish detailed design despite heavy cost savings.
- Review and provide comment on relevant shop drawings provided by the sub-consultants.
Principle
- Review variations that arise against acceptable standards & obtain approval prior to making any approval.
- Monitor the sub-consultants progress against the approved project program.
- Obtain certification from sub-consultants of compliance of deliverables with relevant statutory requirements and codes.
- Manage communication with all sub-consultants including prompt written responses to RFI’s.
- Review the quality of contract work carried out by the sub-consultants.
We had been engaged as Head Design Consultant to provide 17 new learning areas, a new community oriented sports hall and refurbished library facilities. As part of this design process the project team and myself were required to coordinate all documents and relevant project requirements as follows:

With my experience working in rural country towns previously and aspirations to undertake more publicly accessible projects, I was asked to assist tutoring the Tangentyere Design Elective with the University of Newcastle. This course was held in Alice Springs in cooperation with a local architectural practice Tangentyere Design, this design practice was responsible for developing and maintaining a significant and highly beneficial relationships with the various local Aboriginal communities around the remote communities in and around Alice WorkingSprings. alongside my previous tutor; mentor and professor Chris Tucker, we supervised 5 groups of students developing Local Decision Making (LDM) strategies to gain government funding for additional basic provisions and amenity. As a number of students were either unable to attend or pulled out last minute, this allowed me to become much more active member in each group acting almost as a team member for some groups in order to ensure these projects were completed and able to be submitted for potential use for grant

As part of the elective and community consultation process, my supervisor, the students and I in association with Tangentyere Design organised a small exhibition open to all members of the public for presentation and discussion. Members of each town camp and other camps were invited to participate providing the final and most critical feedback to assist the team moving forward.

A key learning outcome for the elective was to instil equitable communicative and consultation skills, gathering as much information as possible without distressing people of varying backgrounds. Each project was based within a few of the seventeen town camps situated around Alice Springs, which have the capacity to be incredibly hostile environments with years of ingrained anti-social and violent behaviour in the past. In order to be as sensitive yet receptive as possible, we played careful attention to just listening to what was said even if it is unrelated, allowing people to feel respected and heard was the goal. The consultation process was always carefully organised and presented to be on a human level, aiming to be as non-architectural as possible. Respect, acknowledgement, laughter, food and storytelling were always the starting point for each workshop session.

The Nyewente Men’s Shed was the first of the projects to be submitted for grant funding so it was incredibly important to guarantee a good outcome for the community. The town camp was already established itself as a camp which could provide trade and service skills during the construction process, the shed was designed to be able to accommodate the camps available skills including boilermakers, fitters, carpenters, plumbers and joiners.

During each workshop session we chatted about what the community members would want to be doing in such a space and how they could benefit from each activity. These were represented in subtle hand drawings of each activity they would want to be performing in the shed to scale.

The mens shed was to be a safe space for men to find refuge whether it be trouble at home, drugs or alcohol or alternatively seeking food, temporary shelter, education, medical advice and even to just watch a game of football with the guys. The challenge was to visualise and indicate what a shed can be to multiple people at any one time. Following the consultation process, this project proved to be another exercise in investigating how people interact with specific environments. Nyewente Men’s Shed Base Build. Alice Springs 2019

Anthepe, also known as “Drive-In”, means “Women’s Dancing” in Arrernte. The Town Camp, located on Arrernte Country, south of the town centre of Alice Springs has a permanent population of over 100 people living in 15 houses. The existing community facility was built in the 1980’s, upgraded in 1991 and variously used over the years as a Community Centre, a Church, a Clinic and even as housing. In the early 2000’s the facility was vacated when the building became structurally unsound and unsafe, due to a leaking roof.

INTERVENTIONSSITE
Central to the design strategy was for it to provide an efficient, sustainable and economical proposal for the renovation of the Community Centre. This was achieved by utilising assets of the existing structure and incorporating a series of critical & essential interventions into both the building and the site in order for it to meet the needs and vision of the community - to provide a safe and secure community facility with increased thermal comfort, aiding to improve health and nutrition whilst facilitating education, professional development, connectivity and creativity. It would provide the community a safe meeting & gathering place for various activities; for children, young adults, parents & the elderly, and a discreet meeting space for individuals to meet social service providers.

I worked as the Project Architect acting with minimal supervision under a single director overseeing the completion of the funding application documentation. This project provided practical experience integrating cultural diversity into built form, management of existing resources and knowledge of federal government authority approvals processes.
Awabakal Community Preschool Community Funding Application
The Awabakal Community Preschool project came together due to the dire need for improved facilities to meet the current demand for a culturally safe learning environment. This project aimed to expand the available space for students, create appropriate learning spaces for additional needs equity children, provide a culturally safe and engaging learning environment preparing aboriginal students for primary Aseducation.thefuture of the project was completely reliant upon securing government funding, this overlaid an additional level of complexity as the project must meet the outcomes for the Capital Works Grants Program in addition to the client’s brief requirements.

Awabakal Community Preschool Plan / Flexible Learning
Proposed Refurbished Internal Play Area, Awabakal Community Preschool Newcastle NSW. 2019
Due to the nature of the project, the design package was utilised as supporting material to specifically present improved spatial reorganisation and efficient value-adds at low cost considering the limited resources available. Myself and the leading director worked together to reorganise the existing floor plan to allow for the key brief requirements whilst allowing for varying teaching styles to be accommodated. Even at such early stages of the design process, heavy importance was placed on a clear and efficient plan which enables the design to withstand changes and the key design elements tot remain intact. Employing hand sketching techniques and varying CAD presentation styles allowed the conceptual base to be retained yet permits flexibility in execution in later stages.

Site & Community Specific Play, Awabakal Community Preschool Newcastle NSW. 2019
The primary focus of the project was to provide a strong link to the natural environment that encourages curiosity, investigation and independence, while simultaneously providing opportunities for more structured indoor and outdoor activities in preparation for primary school. The existing facilities failed to provide appropriate visual connectivity with the outdoor learning environment, requiring the clear separation of indoor and outdoor activities in order to maintain supervision, therefore restricting the capacity to offer differentiated group sizes. This was the core argument for the project.

As the clients educational mission was underpinned by a passion for the culture and values of the Awabakal Community, this prescribed a strong link to the natural environment which encouraged curiosity, investigation and independence, while simultaneously providing opportunities for more structured indoor and outdoor activities. We placed heavy emphasis on outdoor play areas as much as internal areas, working with sight-lines to native vegetation, natural light & ventilation, tactile finishes allowing constant connection to natural materials highlighting connection to country. Implementation of such concepts were fundamental to the success of the project in order to ingrain the culture and values into educational pedagogy.

Iterational Form Finding via Computational Design
The resulting form was a reactionary linear body shaped by moving particles, varying the pressure or speed these particles allowing a discernible habitable structure. In order to construct this geometry, I assembled a simple lattice structure consisting of 32 distinct profiles initially supported by high-tensile steel wire.

Planning Application Eddy St Townhouses
During my year out between degrees and subsequent years whilst completing my postgraduate studies, I undertook many small residential projects generally preparing drawings for planning approval and some construction certification documents. The client for this project was local building contractor who specialised in small investment property developments to be documented and built in relatively short amounts of time on a design & construct contract. The site faced two street frontages in a suburban area, the design was developed to work with the contractors available and commonly used trades in previous projects. Ground & First Plans. I also assisted in preparing some initial conceptual floor plans and diagrams which were used to generate conversation in refining the brief and client needs for later stages of the design process.
I employed a mixture of hand sketching and digital sketching techniques to generate iterative plans using standard furniture templates to quickly and efficiently propose a coherent design response.

I came to the SHAC knowing they had extensive body of works based within the education sector, producing masterplans for a large number of primary, secondary and tertiary education campus‘ along the east of Australia and winning several public design competitions for entire new schools. I gained invaluable experience in the process of masterplanning and specifically within the realm of education. This included implementing strategies to analyse the client, the people (including staff members), the school’s educational pedagogy, integration with educational design context, benchmarking with similar scale projects, adhering to functional area standards and considering other potential community partnership ventures. This was all prior to any design or drawing work had begun. This school was located within one of the largest site in the immediate region therefore the client had requested our team to produce feasibility studies identifying any market gaps which the school could invest into, whether it be additional educational space, a new chapel, early childhood education or sporting facilities. All options had to be considered and subsequently ruled out. Interface & Landscape

Myself and a small design team had previous experience working on the adjacent primary school. Despite coming second in the design competition, the project broke and dispersed the school program into learning stages creating a hierachy across the site, working simultaniously with the requirement for a staged construction process and growing enrollments. My role within the team was to develop the 3D model working closely with surveying and infrastructure consultants, develop visalisations for final presentation and prepare functionality diagrams for each learning module in varying phases. Education Street & Internal Courtyard. QOH 2017Sectional Perspective. QOH 2017 St Mary’s High School Design Competition + Tender + +
82 // PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE QOH ARCHITECTS - NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA
The St Mary's High School expansion began as a design competition and moved through to tender and construction. My role in this project was initially developing the 3D model, preparing concept visualisations, diagrams to assist in presentations, document the entire school site and associated services. The practice won the design competition between four local practices, subsequently I assisted within a small team of senior designers and the nominated architect to develop the project from planning approvals through to multi-stage construction.

The brief required six internal spaces to be completely stripped bare and re-purposed for new science & music classrooms all whilst maintaining the structural integrity of the existing structure. involvement in this project was solely based in post-concept design phases,I worked directly under the nominated architect to produce authority drawings and tender documentation simultaneously in order to ensure the design programme and project budgets were maintained. As this project was defined as complying development being all internal works, the drawing package was relatively small consisting of detailed demolition plans, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, schedules, internal and comprehensive joinery furniture details.

An existing special education centre in Maitland, Newcastle required accessibility upgrades in order to remain licensed and cater for disabled students. The project was deemed as complying development, and so my role in this project consisted of detailed site investigation and preparation of drawings for construction certification. The project provided me with a great fundamental understanding of disabled access requirements in design & construction. Play Area Access View. Shaddock Architects 2013

Initially pursue a career in carpentry & building before finding design & architecture. Prior to my career in architecture I worked for several years in carpentry & building on construction sites of varying scale from individual residences to commercial fitouts. During my architectural education & career I have maintained my crafting skills using a range of tools including fixed / portable sanders & drills, power saws, hand planes, jigsaws, chisels, routers and computer aided devices such as laser cutters and CNC machines. As a component of my architectural education, we gained access to a state of the art workshop and maker space allowing students to test and create prototypes and scale models for presentation. To work within this space, we were required to demonstrate safe work health safety practices including PPE and tool inspection.

During the last few years I’ve taken a liking to experimenting in underwater photography capturing the underwater environment, its creatures and rich ecosystems that reside in the ocean. This has led me seek more knowledge and the desire to express the importance of maintaining a clean ocean ensuring the survival of its inhabitants for future generations. Freediving
Stemming mostly from a lack of funds to go SCUBA diving to take more underwater photos, I began to hold my breath and dive deep with my camera. Just wanting to be down below for longer and longer amounts of time to check out all the life on the bottom of the ocean floor, I grew to love the feeling of pushing my boundaries. Surrendering oneself to the crushing pressure of the ocean at depth has its hazards as the practice of freediving requires immense control of the body & mind as the air within the lungs compresses and expands along the length of the dive, every muscle must be considered and used as efficiently as possible in order to conserve Inoxygen.order to continue freediving I must to keep myself as healthy as ‘balance’ permits which allows room for cycling, football, yoga and oztag in my other space time.
Pictured from left: Bodrum Coastline, Turkey Coffin Bay, South Australia School of Whiting, Newcastle, Australia Swansea Bridge, Newcastle, Australia I have always loved being enveloped by water, whether it is was in the ocean or in a backyard pool. No matter the temperature, I grew to yearn earlier bedtimes just so I could have more time in the ocean in the morning just to be by the water and chat to locals.
