Jalan Kuching Housing Redevelopment 2020 - UPM
The redevelopment covers rebuilding 6 blocks of walk-up flats into a high density resdiential complex and transforming the space under the high tension cable into a multipurpose public realm. The planning of the building is to form a perimeter block that staggered into a tower block to minimize its looming presence to the neighbourhood. The units are placed in a single loaded corridor for ventilation with forecourts at the entrance of every unit to emulate the anjung of the traditional Malay Kampung house. Every 2 & 3 bedroom units has been designed to be wheelchair accessible.
The famous street market is shifted to this new linear public realm to provide more privacy and comfort for the new resdients. A plaza is designed in front of the mosque to accomodate for friday prayers thus solidifying its purpose as the center for the community and the new residents.
Bottom Left: Sky verandahs as common shared open space for units that doesnt have their own forecourts
The ground floor of the housing development is a fully permeable public realm with open plazas and lush landscaping. 9 2-bedrooms units faces the linear public realm with urban farming plots
Every unit on the perimeter block is equipped with a forecourt that functions like the anjung in a traditional malay house.
N NN The unit has been designed to allow independent living for persons with disabilities and elderly people
The parking ramp to the basement has been topped with a green roof that doubles as a playing area for children
The forecourts faces each other into the courtyard to instill a sense of community for the residents
Residents could customize the courtyards for their own needs whether as socializing spaces, landscaping corner, or as additional storage spaces.
The perimeter block is punctured with double volume openings to allow a seamless connection between the courtyards and the public pedestrian route.
Sketch of the section of the greenhouse at the roof of the perimeter block. Sketch of the section of the typical unit facade with built in shading overhang.
Sketch of the detail for the glulam columns of the forecourt with a concrete stump on the ground floor. Sketch of the assembly detail of the fourcourt glulam column with the Cross Laminated Timber flooring.

Towards a Spatial Justice for Public Realm in Spatially Fragmented Neighbourhood 2020-2021 - UPM
Spatially fragmented neighbourhood is the dominant urban landscape in Klang Valley. Its function by that any usage of space is automatically privatized at the price of undermining the common public realm. The concept of heterotopia by Michel Foucault theorized this phenomenon as a strong sense of spatial othering. The current practice of neoliberal urbanism has created neighbourhoods with a strong centralperiphery relationship to the metropolitan region with segregated built environment features such as wide boulevards and perimeter barriers. An audit of the land use distribution for the neighbourhood showed spatial injustices for the public realm through the under provision of quality public spaces. The study has established the socio spatial patterns of a spatially fragmented neighbourhoods by using architectural ethnography.
The patterns illustrated how the fragmented urban landscape has such a strong influence towards the residents that any usage of space by the communities further perpetuated the undermining of the public realm. The design thesis proposed a scheme for a public space reclamation of a boulevard as a spatial justice of public realm. This reclamation is for all communities and individuals that are fragmented by their built environment to come together in a shared public space where public realm is upheld. The public space reclamation is spearheaded by the neighbourhood technical workshop building to produce, supervise and maintain the public realm and its values. It is hoped to shift the value of public space from the least valuable in a capitalist development to the most valuable wealth of space to be shared by all in a civil and sustainable society.
The neighbourhood technical workshop building typology to supervise, maintain, preserve, and reclaim public realm in the neighbourhood. Workshops are stacked on top of each other to minimize the building footprint. Steel trusses supports the floor to carry the load of heavy machineries in the workshops. the building facade consist of pivoting windows to allow cross ventilation of fresh air in the workplaces.
The public space reclamation includes a street library with pivoting walls that doubles as bookshelves to encourage the community to engage with the library. This provides a variety of public life in the neighbourhood that goes beyond recreational and commercial activities.
The reclaimed boulevard are lined with lush landscaping to promote outdoor public spaces in the tropical climate.
A pattern of permeable concrete pavers lined the road surface to give textural differences that alert drivers to slow down their vehicles.
