An old Italian barrack, going to be a vital part of the city as a performance art university close to Bocconi University and Train Station connecting the site to Italian Railway network. The existing U-shape building and the wooden structure of their roof, trees, and parts of the existing wall that there is no reason to be removed, were saved or refurbished in design.

The system of courtyards among the existing morphology

System of Courtyards Courtyards in Milan and especially in the area of Biccoca have a significant characteristic. At first, it is not tangible, but after analyzing the morphological incoherency of the area in this sense, the importance of voids become more clear. As we can not see the tangibles, we start to see the intangibles. The voids start be visible as the masses are. The system of courtyards all around the area is a well-formed urban condition; similarly, as it would be explained later, this system even works inside the site and could be a great potentiality for the future design.

Serial Vision on the borders of the site. (Orrange is the site and BW is the surrounding) This serial vision shows the closure on both sides

Effect of the lines The existing lines in surrounding could form new in-site lines. The closure of the whole surrounding and also the site is a characteristic that should be considered. The closure of the site is in contrast with the modern contemporary concept of universities, which is about freedom of movement. But also the closure of Caserma is part of its memory. Therefore, the walls surrounding the site could be removed where it is necessary and maintained where there is no need to be removed.

The most important corners and edges are shown in the images. They are on east and north, and the most important corners are northeast and then south-east. These corners need a significance. The important thing about the edges is that the importance if these edges should not block the visual touch to the rest of the site.

The best choice is to avoid building on the most critical edge to make the rest of the site significant. The system of courtyards could be strengthened. The residential morphologies affect the site from the side where there is the location of residences. They are mostly located on the west and north of the site. Therefore, the homes and dormitories would be appropriate to be in the northwest of the site, close to the other residential.

RIFORMARE MILANO : CASERMA MONTELLO MSc - Multiscale Urban Design Studio 2015 Milan, Italy Professors: Karin Hofert Andrea Cammarata Sandro Rolla Ricardo Genta Arunjyoti Hazarika Massimo Galluzi

EXPO 2015 in Milan attracted a lot of attention from all fields of design to this economical-urban node of Europe. The municipality of Milan proposed the idea of Riformare Milano, to regenerate many sites in the city of Milan. One of these places in Milan is Caserma Montello; a large military site existed before the first world war. This design is an answer to reforming the Caserma Montello and making it as a part of the city. The main building on the south, built in 1910, considered as the most significant part of the site and was designed to be refurbished as the community center of the neighborhood.

Opening the Open Spaces Open spaces were formed in different levels and in variety of places in the site. They also define some invisible lines between the residential area and the rest of the site and the fablab area and the the passing street on the west side. The necessity of these spaces would be feeled when we check the other close nodes of city near to Piazza Firenze. M u l t i - C u l t u r e The open spaces, public spaces, and fablab buildings are well connected; therefore an international atmosphere is posible. Going from a sushi exhibition in food fablab to an indian dance show in openspace or artfablab is easily possible. Furthermore, the residentials are designed in high diversity to fit the needs of various cultures which will enjoy the city of milan.

FOOD FABLAB, CASERMA MONTELLO

The agriculture and the feeding are few of the most important points to reach a sustainable society. There would be an opportunity to bring the positive points of a rural area into the city. This will not only produce food but also provides a mental health for the people. The FabLab area design takes place in three connected volume with the same theme. Food Fablab, art Fablab, and technoscientific Fablab. These three Fablabs are collaborating with each other. So scientists, artists, etc. will meet each other. Here the foodLab is presented.

The Underground Exhibition Area, ends to an agri-courtyard

Food Fablab is an architecture for food and people from different cultures. As food is the most common language among people, it is the first step to a multi-cultural community. The Fablab is in touch with Agricultural Courtyards, and it has fish-agri-lab as well. The underground level which ends to the courtyard is a place for food exhibitions. The architecture has defined places for learning and practicing everything about food.

LAND-ARCH Workshop - Architecture in Landscape 2016 Porto, Portugal Professors: Camillo Robello Kiana Jalali

City of Porto, Portugal, a pleasing landscape. The number of airplane traces on the sky is much less than central of Europe. One of the significant points to show the variety of Europe. It is calm with a vision to the ocean while facing the west which means an incredible sunset, with amazing colors in the sky. It is one of the best spots to chill out, simply a time to focus on beauty. A three-day workshop. How Architecture and Landscape design could develop simultaneously. A Museum for Landscape and landscape arts.

The Art Museum of Porto is an Architecture that connects the Natural Landscape with Urban Landscape. The museum is not only a single building, but it is expanded and includes the park on the back and beach in front. The existing square has an underground level which used as a part connection in the design. Some parts of exhibitions are happening in the park and beach. The main building museum is a white mass with high transparency in interior facade with red glazing. The red glazing in addition to red maple trees makes a huge contrast which attracts people to the inner courtyard. Park

MINHOCÃO Msc - Landscape Architecture 2016 São Paulo, Brazil Professors: Pessoa Pereira Alves Henrique

MinhocĂŁo is a highway passing through the urban context of SĂŁo Paolo. This elevated highway became an urban issue since the beginning of establishment. Recently municipality is interested in transforming the highway. This urban reformation leads to a large-scale urban landscape design with a focus on a particular section.

EAST RIVER HOUSE BSc - Architecture Studio 2012 Isfahan, Iran Professor: M. Boroumand

EAST RIVER HOUSE

A design of a house for a specific family in a specific climate and site. It was located between a river in the west and a street in the east; on a steep slant. The average temperature is rarely cold but very warm in the summer by the hot sunshine. View of winding river across the plain was the most impressive features of the site. Another point was orientation and spatial solution to protect from the sunlight. Cultural and need differences among the generations of a family exerted a significant influence over the whole design. They were characterized as a middle-class Persian family, in three generations: Grandparents, Parents, and Children.

WOLLONGONG URBAN SUSTAINABILITY OPPORTUNITIES AND REALITIES Essay - Sydney Exchange - Urban Sustainable Design and Development 2017 New South Wales, Australia Professors: Helen Gilbert Margaret Liu

Essay

This is a report and proposal written on ‹Urban Sustainability of Wollongong CBD›. This text is an individual part of a team report on Urban Sustainable Design and Development for a course about the same topic at UTS, Sydney.1

Wollongong Urban Sustainability Opportunities and Realities Ahmad Rajabi

3.1. Urban Scale Wollongong CBD is mostly between the beach and the train track. Besides, on its west, it is surrounded by vast low-density suburbs. Considering that the Wollongong CBD is mostly low-rise low-density context, to have a sustainable city -with minimum touch on the ground- it is necessary to make it denser and provide more urban public places. To avoid urban sprawl in the first step as it should remind the famous indigenous proverb; «touch the earth lightly.» (Vale 2014) The issue of density In short-term, the increase of density and demand for it might be low, but in long-term even the high-rise buildings need to be higher. Therefore, expandable towers and medium-rise buildings could be helpful. Buildings which are designed and built structurally and mechanically expandable in height in addition to functionally-changeable feature. The same thing is needed close to public transportations in suburbs of Wollongong.

Sustainable Transportation The existing pedestrian oriented path: Crown Street is partly designed and changed to a pedestrian path, with many places to sit; and it has many shops in addition to free Wi-Fi for citizens as well. The beginning and the end are defined by overpassing bridges which are seeming like gates, but this definition is not enough. The pedestrian Crown Street cannot be considered as a successful pedestrian path as it is not exactly connecting two significant points. It seems that it has more commercial value than urban-social value. Furthermore, free Wi-Fi could be one of the reasons to attract people to shop. However, shops should be the tool to attract people to vitalize the city. It could be considered as a project which should be continued on another line. The Crown St. finally is an important street for cars, especially because of the last square and its connection to the streets on the back of the beach. There is an important fact which pointed out shortly previously. If the train stations get connected to the beach through at least one path (not necessarily straight) it is going to work as a well-defined path. The route which starts from a station and goes to the most pleasant and most visited place of the city, which is its beach. As the crown street is a long street and there is only a part of it which is pedestrian-oriented, it is possible to use the Latin prefix ‹Pedo-› which relates the word to ‹foot,› and call this part of the street as Crown Pedo-Street.

Figure 5. The diagram of urban pedestrian- bicycle paths proposal in urban scale. (Authors proposal) 1- The other sections of this report which are not in this portfolio were written by colleagues: J.Anjos, M.Garcia, and M.Costa.

Essay

The proposal in this case

Figure 6. The main proposal of Pedestrian-Bicycle path like a Decumanus passing through the width of Wollongong CBD. The orange dashed lines are the junctions of Pedo-Street and the other streets (see the next figure for more detailed diagram of junctions fig.7). (Authors proposal)

The Crown Pedo-Street should be continued by shifting to the Market Street through the Church Pedo-Street. Consequently, The Market Street connects few parks and greeneries, and it reaches to the beach. The whole axis will work like a Decumanus in ancient Roman cities. The junctions are the other issue which will be explained later. The future Market Pedo-Street will be a strong pedestrian path starting from the beach and touches few parks reaches the Church and Church Square. Then through existing church Pedo-Street it reaches the Crown Pedo-Street and continues to the Station. The Pedo-bike-routs should be defined at least by lines on the way between the station and significant destinations such as the University of Wollongong; since there are no exact defined paths for bicycles and pedestrians separately from The North Station of Wollongong to The University. The same thing is true from the main station to the Hospital of Wollongong. The Wollongong bike-sharing is almost at level zero. Therefore, it is essential to provide bicycle-sharing stations all over the city. Moreover, as Sydney region has a moderate climate comparing to leading sustainable countries in case of transportation such as Germany, the idea of ‘Bike Autobahn› could work if they connect strategic points of cities and all suburbs. These bicycle highways are not necessarily following the existing routes. They can show different scenes of nature and the environment.

The issue of junctions between Pedo-streets and the other streets Very low-speed limits and single lane cars passing across the Pedo-streets could help to avoid using traffic lights in these specific junctions.(fig7) The Car-Unfriendly pavement could contribute to improving safety for pedestrians and bicycles. (Cullen 1971)

Other Sustainable Transportation The Wollongong CBD has grid pattern which could help the city to improve its sustainable public transportation, such as trams and electrical buses connected to the power network. The grid system provides the ability to change the parallel streets to be oriented for combinations of alternative methods of transportation. Moreover, there is a great need for a reliable public transportation system in suburbs to connect them to the train station and from there to the rest of the Wollongong CBD, in a way that to use private cars become irrational. This is more critical for distant suburbs such as Figtree suburb. For instance, these suburbs could have a denser area with higher buildings located close to tram station. Smart City in Sustainable City The sustainable city has been highly mixed with the concept of the smart city. As recently they are complementary of each other both in theory and reality. The smart city is not just about high-tech equipment as many people believe. Smart Citizen as the core of Smart/Sustainable City has to be engaged with the daily life of the city. The idea of Free-WiFi in Crown Street could be interesting, but it is not smart enough. The better proposal is to divide low-speed and highspeed Wi-Fi between active citizens and passive citizen. If we consider the free low-speed internet as the right of people, it could be provided all through the Pedestrian Area. However, the high-speed internet could be provided for those citizens who gain credits by walking/jogging/biking over the city. Those who walk more can get more high-speed free WiFi as a gift of being smart-sustainable-healthy citizens. This will make a very active pedestrian path which could be even paved by high-tech generators to generate electricity by walking.(Fox 2015) Besides, each person could be informed by mobile apps that how much electricity they have provid-

Essay

ed for the city by walking and living healthy. Being informed and caring about the environment is a key concept to be a smart citizen and consequently smart city. The use of soft-GIS and the data provided by smart citizens could be significantly helpful for planners of future Wollongong. (Zubizarreta, Seravalli & Arrizabalaga 2016) Water Resources Wollongong is the leading city in Australia in the case of recycling the waste water, and it is improving. It is recycling 40 percent of its waste water which is the highest rank in the country. (Sydney Water) The city could use more rain collecting systems as the city has significant rain during a year. By increasing the density of CBD, the costs of pipelines will decrease significantly. Waste The city could invest on citizen›s recycling-repairing centers and let them recycle their stuff by their own in some centers all around the city. They will separate the glasses in different colors by themselves for instance, and they might receive gifts instead (e.g. High-Speed Internet). They might need tools to repair their stuff instead of throwing them out. These centers could help people to repair and recycle by themselves, by providing tips and tools. These centers could educate people in this case as well. Sustainable Energies The off-grid culture should be expanded by giving loans and informing people about lower costs in future for their personal economy and society as well. Moreover, which in longer-term the establishing costs will return. It is a positive point that the city is located in an area and climate which could use many varieties of renewable energies, such as wind, solar and waves. References:

CHILDREN LIBRARY: PINOCCHIO YAC 2017: Pinocchio Children Library in Collodi, Italy

The large-scale analysis and strategies

Exisng Context

The schemac intervenon in the context

The exisng Pinocchio's park is not in direct touch with the city of Collodi. Both look more isolated than connected. The paper factory has the main element that has all the main characteriscs of its identy, removing the unnecessary added elements could be more helpful than saving them. This primary volume is the key in proporons of design. The Church of Collodi is one of the other significant building in the surrounding context. This church has a plaza in front as most of the italian churches, but this one is a bit forgoen and became a parking place for the cars. The intervenon connects the church's plaza to the Pinocchio's Park through the library and its landscape. This helps to make the city of Collodi as live as possible, by not isolang it.

The Connecons in the intervenon: The front plaza of the library in touch with the plaza in front of the church in Collodi, with the main courtyard to the Pinocchio’s Park.
