Abstraction of Introduction Silence, an open space The “Silence Between is the title of this thesis, referring to a wellknown quotation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, about the value of silence in the music. As this thesis is concerning the sustainable architecture and urban scale regeneration, it reveals one of the most important keywords of this thesis which is the value of open space in the regeneration of the heritage in the urban scale. However, the importance of the open-spaces is obvious, but it is necessary to know it is as serious as the built heritage, and even more. Caserma Mameli, an old Italian barrack, going to be a vital part of the city as a performance art university close to Bicocca University and The Train Station connecting the site to Italian Railway network. The existing U-shape buildings, the wooden structure of their roof, trees,

9

the existing wall that makes a closure from all sides, some pavements, and the system of courtyards are the significant characteristics of this site. As it has been a military site, the closure has always been part of its memory. The Caserma is globally well connected through public transportation facilities: metro, tram, buses, and trains. The center of Milan is easily accessible from Caserma Mameli, where Teatro-alla-scala is on its way. However most of the theatres of Milan are almost in the central parts of it, but there are theatres close to this Caserma. Such as Archimboldi Theatre a great modern theatre for performance art. The city of Milan could benefit by dedicating this area to performance art university. The academic background in the area and the performance art theatres could be satisfying reasons for establishing a performance art university.

10

The site has a lot of dynamic open spaces and potentialities that could make a significant university in this field. In addition, being on the side of a regenerated factory (Manifattura Tabacchi) to a Cinema Center and Museum could be an interesting point for this kind of function. The urban analysis shows that the most accessible side of the site is its east side and more important is the North-East corner. The U-shape buildings are closer to the south, and the northern part of the site has more free spaces. There are existing trees on the western part of the site that could provide a buffer from the residentials on that side. Morphologically, the area seems unorganized, but the system of open spaces and court yards makes it readable. Urban masses orient in a way that they provide quality open spaces (or voids) among. This territorial characteristic exists even inside the Caserma. From this paradigm the whole area is coherent.

11

The design follows coherency where it is necessary. According to the mentioned analysis, The East edge would be dedicated to an entrance landscape corridor that brings readability to the area where there are many functions and orientations. The use of contrast in height, the direction of greenery and, the relativity of functions were the main features to make the design user-friendly. The Theatre halls located on the north and northeast where on the back is the location of parking. the residentials are formed coherently with surrounding residentials on the northwest area. The open spaces and U shape buildings contain the major spirit and functions of Performance art university. The open spaces are various and connected through architectures or open corridors. The concept of a modern university as an open and freely accessible is in contrast with the existing wall and closure. Therefore the current wall stays where it is not necessary to be removed.

12

Finally, all the movements, landscapes, and architectures are woven in a system that also has the concept of the ‘freedom of movement’. The space that leads to a greater creative city.

Transportation Closure System of Courtyards

Chapter1 Existing lines

15

Milan has several main axis and rings, but it is enough to know about the related ones to Caserma Mameli. The closest axis is the axis from the central Milan to Bicocca. Where Greco Pirelli Station, University of Bicocca, Bicocca neighborhood, and Caserma Mameli exist.

16

This chapter is about the architectural-urban reading to design a multi-scale project. Multi-scale projects usually have a significant and tangible effect on the city. Therefore a broad reading is needed, but this thing should not lead to a never-ending reading that does not end with strategy and design. In this chapter, the selective reading leading to change and design will be explained. The pre-reading provided for the designer was the future function of the site which seems appropriate for the whole city, academical condition, and potentialities in the region and society. As it was asked to design a performance art university for the city in Caserma Mameli in Biccoca of Milan, several analysis and readings were done. The reading needs to be done in a way that considers the existing and old condition while being aware of proposal alternative for future design. Old and new: Old as a current Caserma in the city, new as a hypothetical performance art university in Milan.

17

The courtyards are formed by orientations of blocks and built masses.

18

System of Courtyards Courtyards in Milan and especially in the area of Biccoca have a significant characteristic. At first, it is not tangible, but after analyzing the morphological incoherency of the area in this sense, the importance of voids become more clear. As we can not see the tangibles, we start to see the intangibles. The voids start be visible as the masses are. The system of courtyards all around the area is a well-formed urban condition; similarly, as it would be explained later, this system even works inside the site and could be a great potentiality for the future design. Accessibility and Transportation The same urban axis in Milan could be a spine for private cars to reach the site while the same axis several public transportation choices: Metro M5, Trams, and Buses. Considering the hypothesis to design a university on this site there would be a significant number of people preferring the public transportation. The Grecco Pirelli station is also a great public transportation node in the vicinity of the site.

This serial vision shows the closure on both sides.

20

Caserma Mameli in Bicocca This area is well-connected to the whole Italian railway through the G.P. train station. It is interesting to be mentioned that this means a well global connectivity. Closure The closure is one of the most significant urban landscape features that catches our eyes by walking on the streets of this area. As Gordon Cullen believes, a serial vision in the area could give an excellent human-scale reading from the site.

Biccoca University, by Gregotti

Bicocca The system of courtyards could be seen all over the area. Especially, in GREGOTTI’s masterplan which formed the region close to the station. The Gregotti’s work has impressive courtyards that are connected in a great area among the well-formed masses. It also focuses on the axis that connects the G.P. Station to Caserma Mameli. By the east side of our site, there is Manufattura Tabacchi, an old factory, which was regenerated to Interactive Museum of Cinema at this moment. In Gregotti’s work, there is one of the most important theatres of Milan, Teatro degli Arcimboldi.

The existing morphology of the site and its surrounding

context

Within the Caserma The site has a lot of dynamic open spaces and potentialities that could make a significant university in this field. Besides, being on the side of a regenerated factory (Manifattura Tabacchi) to a Cinema Center and Museum could be an interesting point for this kind of function. The urban analysis shows that the most accessible side of the site is its east side and more important is the North-East corner. The U-shape buildings are closer to the south, and the northern part of the site has more free spaces. There are existing trees on the west of the site that could provide a buffer from the residential on that side. Morphologically, the area seems unorganized, but the system of open spaces and courtyards makes it readable. Urban masses orient in a way that they provide quality open spaces (or voids) among. This territorial characteristic exists even inside the Caserma. From this paradigm the whole area is coherent.

Diversity of Spaces Closure and Freedom of Movement Diversity of Functions Diversity of Users Diversity of Landscape To Build or not to Build, Void or Mass

Chapter2 Effect of the lines

29

30

Effect of the lines The existing lines in surrounding could form new in-site lines. The closure of the whole surrounding and also the site is a characteristic that should be considered. The closure of the site is in contrast with the modern contemporary concept of universities, which is about freedom of movement. But also the closure of Caserma is part of its memory. Therefore, the walls surrounding the site could be removed where it is necessary and maintained where there is no need to be removed.

32

The

most

important

corners and edges are shown in the images. They are on east and north, and the most important corners are northeast and then south-east. These corners need a significance. The important thing about the edges is that the importance if these edges should not block the visual touch to the rest of the site.

33

34

The best choice is to avoid building on the most critical edge to make the rest of the site significant. The system of courtyards could be strengthened. The residential morphologies affect the site from the side where there is the location of residences. They are mostly located on the west and north of the site. Therefore, the homes and dormitories would be appropriate to be in the northwest of the site, close to the other residential.
