URBAN ISSUE 1 LOSS SENSE OF PLACE: URBAN VOIDS RUPTURING THE OVERALL FABRIC AND IMAGE OF SEREMBAN CITY.

THE TOWN CENTRE IS CHARACTERISED BY AREAS; MAINLY FOCUSED FOR COMMERCIAL USE. NOT MANY OPEN PARKS FOR COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES. UNDERUTILISED OPEN SPACES. FAÇADE OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS ARE NOT MAINTAINED. INTERIOR OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS ARE POORLY MAINTAINED/FULLY RENOVATED. AWARENESS OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS ARE POOR.

URBAN ISSUE 2 ABANDONED BUILDINGS LEAD TO WASTAGE OF SPACE AND NEST FOR DRUG ADDICTS (UNSAFE).

REASON OF ABANDOMENT: LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CONSERVATION OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURES. RESTORATION COSTS MORE THAN OWNER COULD AFFORD. INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.

LESS DESIRABLE SURROUNDING AREA COMPARED TO TOURIST ATTRACTIONS.

ARCHITECTURAL ISSUES

1

NO PROPER PLATFROM IN SEREMBAN TO CARRY OUT THE PLANNED INITIATIVE.

2

INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING NEEDS A DESIGNATED ZONE WITH BUFFER AREAS AWAY FROM THE CITY.

3

PRODUCTION WORKSHOP ONLY CATERS FOR MASS PRODUCTION. DEMOCRATIZING THE MANUFACTURING LANDSCAPE.

OBJECTIVE 1 URBAN DEVELOPMENT TO REACTIVATE THE URBAN VOIDS USING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION & PLACEMAKING PROCESS.

Placemaking

11 KEY PRINCIPLES SPACES, HOW TO TURN A PLACE AROUND, 1991

DEFINITION

PEOPLE CENTERED APPROACH TO THE PLANNING, DESIGN & MANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC SPACES.

INVOLES LOOKING AT, LISTENING TO & ASKING QUESTIONS TO THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE, WORK & PLAY WITHIN THE CONTEXT

THE INFORMATION IS THEN USED TO CREATE A COMMON VISION FOR THAT PLACE

“THE VISION CAN EVOLVE QUICKLY INTO AN IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY, STARTING FROM SMALL-SCALE DOABLE IMPROVEMENTS THAT CAN IMMEDIATELY BRING BENEFITS TO PUBLIC SPACES AND THE PEOPLE WHO USE THEM.” - WHAT IS PLACEMAKING?, 2010

LQ C 1. THE COMMUNITY IS THE EXPERT

2. CREATE A PLACE NOT A DESIGN

7. TRIANGULATE

3. LOOK FOR PARTNERS

8. THEY ALWAYS SAY “IT CAN’T BE DONE”

4. YOU CAN SEE A LOT JUST BY OBSERVING

9. FORM SUPPORTS FUNCTION

5. HAVE A VISION

10. MONEY IS NOT THE ISSUE

6. LIGHTER, QUICKER, CHEAPER

11. YOU ARE NEVER FINISHED

OBJECTIVE 2 ARCHITECTURE TO PROPOSE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN APPROACH THAT FABRICATES THE URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENTS.

“We’ve had a digital revolution, but we don’t need to keep having it: we’ve won. What’s coming now is the revolution in digital fabrication.”

DIGITAL FABRICATION

A WAY OF MAKING

COMPUTER DRIVEN MACHINE TOOLS

CREATE PROTOTYPES DURING DESIGN PROCESS

DIGITAL DATA

TO BUILD, TRANSFORM OR CUT MATERIALS

RAPID PROTOTYPING

- NEIL GERSHENFELD (2007)

FABRICATION PROCESS

RAPID MANUFACTURING

Digital Fabrication Laboratory A FAB LAB IS TYPICALLY EQUIPPED WITH AN ARRAY OF FLEXIBLE COMPUTER-CONTROLLED TOOLS THAT COVER SEVERAL DIFFERENT LENGTH SCALES AND VARIOUS MATERIALS

WHAT?

WHY?

HOW?

DIGITAL FABRICATION LABORATORY IS A PLACE THAT IS SET UP TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO TURN THEIR IDEAS INTO NEW PRODUCTS.

IT IS AN EVOLVING SUITE OF CAPABILITIES TO TURN DATA INTO THINGS AND THINGS INTO DATA.

BY GIVING PEOPLE ACCESS TO A RANGE OF ADVANCED DIGITAL MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES AND KNOWLEDGE.

WHILE FAB LABS HAVE YET TO COMPETE WITH MASS PRODUCTION, THEY HAVE ALREADY SHOWN THE POTENTIAL TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS TO CREATE SMART DEVICES FOR THEMSELVES.

THESE DEVICES CAN BE TAILORED TO LOCAL OR PERSONAL NEEDS IN WAYS THAT ARE NOT PRACTICAL OR ECONOMICAL USING MASS PRODUCTION.

Construction 3D Printing

DEFINITION

CONSTRUCTION 3D PRINTING (C3DP) REFERS TO VARIOUS TECHNOLOGIES THAT USE 3D PRINTING AS A CORE METHOD TO FABRICATE BUILDINGS OR CONSTRUCTION COMPONENTS.

C3DP APPROACHES

ON-SITE

INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS

C3DP ADVANTAGES FASTER CONSTRUCTION

LOWER LABOR COSTS

INCREASED COMPLEXITY & ACCURACY

GREATER INTEGRATION OF FUNCTION

LESS WASTE PRODUCED

OFF-SITE

GANTRY SYSTEMS

TETHERED AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE

Challenge the potential of digital fabrication laboratory on a larger scale operation as urban intervention tool

Mass customization One size does not fit all

CHOICE

EXPRESSION

ADVANTAGE OF DIGITAL FABRICATION IS IT DOES NOT DEPEND ON QUANTITY TO BE COST-EFFECTIVE

INDIVIDUALITY

DIGITAL FABRICATION TECHNOLOGIES MAKE THE PRODUCTION OF UNIQUE ELEMENTS JUST AS EFFICIENT AS THE PRODUCTION OF IDENTICAL ONES

ABILITY FOR LAST MINUTE CHANGE

- KIERAN & TIMBERLAKE (2004)

ARCHITECTURE

CLIENTS

ARCHITECTURE THAT PERFECTLY FITS ITS LOCAL CONDITIONS & PERSONAL PREFERENCES OF ITS USERS

CLIENTS WITH SMALL BUDGETS NO LONGER HAVE TO SETTLE DOWN FOR FIXED OPTIONS BUT CAN PROFIT FROM THE FLEXIBILITY OFFERED

BUILT-TO-FIT HIGH QUALITY ARCHITECTURE WILL BECOME AVAILABLE TO A BROADER SEGMENT OF SOCIETY

PV ROOF PANELS CAN BE INDIVIDUALLY SHAPED

WINDOWS CAN BE POSITIONED TO OFFER BEST VIEWS

FLOOR PLANS CAN BE COMPLETELY ADJUSTED WITHOUT ADDITIONAL COSTS

STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS CAN BE UNIQUELY SHAPED OPTIMALLY

CLIENTS CAN GET HIGHER QUALITY & MORE INNOVATIVE DESIGN BECAUSE THEY SHARE THE COST FOR DESIGN & INNOVATION

Open Source Architecture

IF FAB LABS CAN BE COMPARED TO THE “LIBRARIES” THEN OPEN SOURCE ARE ITS “BOOKS”

DIGITAL SHARING IS MORE OBVIOUS AND EASIER BECAUSE OF THE DIRECT LINK BETWEEN ATOMS AND BITS.

AS ALL CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION OF DIGITALLY FABRICATED OBJECTS IS DIGITAL, IT CAN EASILY BE TRANSPORTED OVER THE INTERNET.

AN OPEN SOURCE PROJECT FOR DESIGNING AND BUILDING HOUSES. IT ENDEAVOURS TO DEMOCRATISE AND SIMPLIFY THE CONSTRUCTION.

ENABLES USERS TO DOWNLOAD CREATIVE COMMONSLICENSED BUILDING PLANS FROM ITS ONLINE LIBRARY, CUSTOMIZE THEM USING SKETCHUP.

CONSTRUCTION OF WIKIHOUSE STRUCTURES REQUIRES NO SPECIAL PARTS BECAUSE THE CUT PIECES OF WOOD SNAP TOGETHER WITH WEDGE AND PEG CONNECTIONS.

THE FRAME OF A WIKIHOUSE CAN BE ASSEMBLED IN LESS THAN A DAY BY PEOPLE WITH NO FORMAL TRAINING IN CONSTRUCTION.

ALEJANDRO ARAVENA

WHILE FABRICATION CAN HAPPEN LOCALLY ON THE DESKTOP OR IN A FAB LAB, KNOWLEDGE CAN BE SHARED AND DEVELOPED GLOBALLY. BLUEPRINTS OF DESIGNS CAN BE SPREAD LIKE MP3’S AND PDF’S.

ELEMENTAL HOUSING: HALF A HOUSE BUILDS A WHOLE COMMUNITY

Imagine a library of urban intervention prototypes only a single download click away.

BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM (BIPV)

In these systems, each module is connected to an inverter which typically is connected just below the panel. With each panel having one inverter avoids the dependency on other modules generation. Each panel will be independent of each other. This kind of system best suits in a place where there are shadow issues on one or more modules, roof with different directions etc. In this kind of systems, module level monitoring is possible. It helps in easy maintenance of the system. One module or one inverter failure wouldn’t affect the generation of rest of the system.
