In this portfolio you will find projects that range from architectural design to interior design, while showcasing Ahmed’s skills as a visual designer. The selected projects investigate residential, commercial, and public settings, with the means to create a series of architecturally expressive structures. With the help of pragmatic and thoughtful programming, designs generated are conceptual and forward-thinking. Either explored individually or in groups, each project considers the philosophical approach of its design, and it’s siting in relation to its context and surroundings. Developed designs are communicated through sketches, orthographic drawings, scaled architectural models and three-dimensional digital renderings.

B u l w r Residential Building Fall 2014 Individual

This project involved the design of a residential building typical of the profession. Individual investigation lead to generating conceptual ideas which were utilized in the planning and development stages while incorporating the pragmatic and functional aspects of residential design. Developed design was communicated through sketches, orthographic drawings and three-dimensional digital models.

This project is an exploration of residential buildings in high density cities. The house is constructed with the intentions of providing a private oasis within the enclosure. The ground is pushed down to the basement level making an exterior courtyard that is viewed from every oor. The building is designed in a way that light enters every oor with large windows while still providing private spaces.

Commercial Building Spring 2015 Partner: Mari Bui

This projects intentions were to design a building complex that included a hotel, a bar/cafÊ, a retail enterprise, and a landscape element. With pragmatic and thoughtful programming, the design renovated and added to two existing neighbouring buildings. A total of 18 hotel suites were distributed into the upper 9 oors with options of long-term, short-term as well as penthouse suites. In addition, the retail component became a bathhouse; equipped with cold plunge pools, dry and wet saunas, massage rooms, and a juice bar lounge. Developed designs were communicated through sketches, orthographic drawings, scaled architectural models and threedimensional digital renderings.

VISION OF ARCHITECTURE

22

23

Located at the tail of Kensington Market, the concept of this project was to retain the character of its surroundings. The ideology of ‘conserving the brick’ becomes a design concept throughout. This is done so by integrating existing facades into the new building, making them into prominent features and giving moments of nostalgia. Juxtaposing the reminiscence of the past, the upper half of the building becomes a dream of the future with an iron-cast I-Beam structure that encloses the massing. With an architectural detail of cantilevered floors at every level and large windows, one gets an illusion of a floating in the air. The project plays with public and private qualities and pushing ideas with conceptual and forward-thinking designs.

A m b i a n t Installation Art Spring 2016 P a r t n e r s : Lambert St-Cyr, Alison Mulvale, Ambika Pharma,

Miriam Tomkin, Timothy Mandody

Ambiant is an architectural installation which marked the entrance to the thesis gallery of OCADU’s graduating class of Environmental Design. Characterized by an undulating roof made out of paper tubes, Ambiant created an architectural expression that embodied the space, guiding the users towards the gallery. Remaining within budget and time constrains, the designers overcame the challenge to keep the installation structurally sound while illuminating the space in an elegant way. An estimated number of 30,000 guests visited the exhibition and the project received high praise.
