ABOUT US The Spirit Foundation has its birthplace in Atlanta Georgia. The Spirit Foundation was started as a vision in 2003 by Dr. Lisa Flowers to reach out to the community about HPV and Cervical Cancer. Dr. Flowers realized that patients, their spouses and families were unaware of the consequences of HPV infection, its link to cervical cancer and how to reduce transmission. Without the knowledge, many of these patients did not understand the importance of followup after abnormal pap tests or diagnostic tests such as colposcopy. Families were torn apart because of the knowledge that HPV is a sexually transmitted infection and were unaware of how common this infection is worldwide. The majority of sexually active individuals have already had contact with the HPV virus. There was a need for patients to understand the real facts about HPV and how to prevent cervical cancer. Dr. Flowers sought to fill this unmet medical need. In 2005 with the help from American Cancer Society, Dr. Flowers piloted her educational program “Con Amor Aprendemos” which is translated “With Love We Learn,” The program is designed to help Latino couples understand HPV and cervical cancer. The program was tested in Christ the King Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia and was a success. Flowers decided to dedicate her life to engage health providers and community leaders to build the Spirit Foundation, a nonprofit

Uncensored,” helps to increase knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer prevention in teens locally & regionally.
Under Dr. Flowers, the Spirit Foundation conducted the First Annual Cervical Cancer Walk “A Walk for Hope,” in 2009. The Cervical Cancer Celebration of Life Ceremony at the first walk, was able to draw over 300 community members to learn about cervical cancer from representatives from the American Cancer Society, CDC and Emory University. The walk has grown to become the annual event, the 5K Run and Walk for Hope in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2015, the Spirit Foundation held it’s first “Shake It for a Cure” Zumbathon, a fundraiser held each year in January, Cervical Cancer Awareness month. All funding for the Spirit Foundation goes toward the “Con Amor Aprendemos/With Love We Learn” educational programs and to provide free cervical cancer screening pap test to uninsured women and free healthcare to residents of the Open Door Community Homeless Shelter.
The Spirit Foundation has received grants from the American Cancer Society and Kaiser Permanente to promote HPV education and awareness to the Latino and African American community through a community developed program called “Con Amor Aprendemos, With Love We Learn”. “Con Amor Aprendemos, With Love We Learn” educational program has grown nationwide to South Carolina & Washington, DC and internationally to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia, Haiti, Ghana and Botswana.
The majority of the Spirit Foundation Board members are health providers who understand the disparity which exists in morbidity and mortality in those who die from cervical cancer. They are all volunteers who are committed to ensure that no women suffers from cervical cancer. Today we have seen this vision grow and now encompasses our yearly 5K Run and Walk for Hope and our annual Zumbathon fundraiser. These programs help provide the resources for the Spirit Foundation to keep the dream and hope alive to increase the use of the HPV vaccine to age appropriate young women, and to provide secondary prevention with free cervical cancer screening test for women.

Quote from Dr. Lisa Flowers “Knowledge is the best tool for prevention” – Dr. Lisa Flowers This quote became the central core of why I started the Spirit Foundation. As a clinician in Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University I was disheartened by the lack of knowledge regarding HPV and cervical cancer in women and their partners—thus the Spirit Foundation was created.

What you should know about HPV and Cervical Cancer “Every visit to a provider can be an opportunity to prevent cervical cancer by making sure women are referred for screening appropriately,” said CDC Principal Deputy Director Ileana Arias, Ph.D. “We must increase our efforts to make sure that all women understand the importance of getting screened for cervical cancer. No woman should die from cervical cancer.”

Cervical Cancer and Human Papilloma Virus related cancers are preventable. With the use of the pap test which screens for cervical cancer and the HPV vaccination, cervical cancer is one of the only preventable cancers in the world. No woman should die from cervical cancer. Despite this, CDC recently release the results from a study which indicated eight million women in the US reported not being screened for cervical cancer each year. The HPV vaccine was approved for the prevention of cervical in 2006. CDC reports that HPV vaccination rates are at an unacceptably low rate in our country and parents report lack of knowledge as the main reason for not vaccinating their teens. In the US, only an estimated 57% of girls and 30% of boys have receive at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. This unfortunate fact is true even with a new vaccine recently approved. On December 10th, 2014, the FDA approved a new HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, which has broader cancer protection. The new vaccine protects against 90 percent HPV types that cause cancer.
