Tire Sidewall Markings Apart from the brand name and tire size, manufacturers provide some more information that is useful and has its own significance such as, tire’s basic dimensions, the week it was produced, load index, inflation pressure, speed rating etc. In addition to tire patterns and sizes, sidewall markings help in identifying and sorting of the tires based on their specifications. Below drawing and interpretation would help you to better understand the sidewall markings and their meanings. Tire Construction Rim Width Max. Load Single/Dual

Pros & Cons of different tire types Differences between Radial and Bias tires
Radial
Bias
Tread Very stiff. Flat footprint. Good steering, good wear life. Resists irregular wear. High puncture resistance.
Tread Quite flexible. Poor steering response. Poor puncture resistance. Harsh ride comfort.
Sidewall Quite thin. Very flexible. Good ride comfort but less puncture resistance.
Sidewall Quite thick. Less flexible.
Ply 1-2 plies only. Low inter-ply friction, low operating temprature and rolling resistance.
Ply Several plies, Inter-ply friction, Higher rolling resistance (excess fuel consumption)
Differences between tubeless and tube type tires
• Lighter • Uses less fuel • Slow loss of pressure in case of perforation • No friction, less heat generation • More stable • Easy to mount • Easy to balance
• Heavier • Uses more fuel • Immediate loss of air in case of perforation • Heat generation due to friction between components • Less stable • Difficult to mount • Difficult to balance

Tips to Optimize Tire Life Inflation Pressure - Inflate tires based on their pressure capacity, load, speed, and usage conditions - Tires must be inflated appropriately. • Under-inflation is detrimental to the tires. It can cause frequent treadwear from the shoulders, heating up of tires, decreasing their durability and fuel economy • Over-inflation can lead to excessive wear from the center tread, hence shortening the lifespan of the tire - Ideally, the inflation pressure should be maintained and checked frequently, since the tires can lose as much as 10 pounds of air pressure in one month
Inadequate Pressure
Standard Pressure
Excessive Pressure
Wheel Alignment Poor wheel alignment can have a negative impact on handling, steerability, and stability of the vehicle Three key parameters must be looked into to align the wheels properly
Toe
Toe – It is the angle formed by two horizontal lines through the planes of two wheels. From the front view, Toe-in is when the front side of the wheels are inclined towards inside; Toe-out is when the rear side of the wheels are inclined towards inside. Excessive toe-in wears the outside of the tire. Excessive toe-out wears the inside of the tire.
Camber – It is the inclination of the tires either inside or outside from the front view of the tires. Make sure that the tires are aligned in a straight direction to optimize steer tire wear and minimize irregular wear. Wear from positive camber is on the outside shoulder of the tire; with negative camber, wear is on the inside shoulder.
Caster - It is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis in reference to a vertical line. It is usually a factor in vehicle handling, but can affect tire wear. Proper caster is important for directional stability and returnability. Improper caster can cause shimmy, excessive steering effort, pulling and shoulder wear on the steer tires.

Tire Rotation Steer Axle • Tires on the driver’s side will tend to wear faster due to the design and operation of the steering system • The opposite steer tire is more likely to develop uneven wear because of effects of road crown and slower wear rate
Recommendation: At 50% wear, rotate left and right tires. If shoulder wear is present on the tires, rotate on the rim at the same time.
Drive Axle • Inner tires will have inside shoulder wear • Heel and Toe wear
Recommendation: • Single Drive Axle – Rotate the inside & outside tire. Turn the tire on the rim if uneven wear or more rapid wear is found on shoulder • Twin Drive Axles – Rotate the front & rear axle tires when the tire wear at 50%
Trailer Axle • Inside shoulder of trailer tires develops rapid or uneven wear due to road crown, axle camber, type of suspension & tire load • On 2 & 3 axle trailers, the wear of the tires is affected by severe scrubbing while turning 3-Axle

Recommendation: • Rotate tires between faster and slower wearing axles when tires are 50% worn – swap inside and outside positions In case if inside shoulder wear is present, rotate the tire on the wheel to minimize additional shoulder wear
Mismatches of Duals Mismatch of duals can be of the following types: • Tire sizes • Tread Depths • Inflation Pressures • New tire & Retread (Different Tread patterns) • Radial & Cross ply (Different construction) The above mismatches can result in considerable difference in overall diameter of duals. If one tire is smaller than the other, it cannot cover the same distance in a single revolution as the bigger tire. Because the tires are bolted together, it has to cover the same distance. In this case, the bigger tire scuffs the smaller tire over that extra distance, every time it goes around. The smaller tire can run hotter, wear faster and it might even act as a brake holding the vehicle and wasting fuel.
Regrooving Regrooving is a practice of removing out the rubber from the grooves of a tire, which in turn creates extra tread depth to deliver key benefits to the end users. Benefits: • Increases the mileage by approximately 25% • Lowers cost per kilometer • Increases the road grip significantly, particular in wet surface Things to Consider • Only the tires that are marked as ‘Regroovable’ on their sidewalls can be regrooved • Make sure that the tire has around 2 to 4 mm tread still remaining • Steel should not be exposed while regrooving • Manufacturer’s regrooving guidelines should be followed • Only the skilled / trained personnel should carry out this process
25%
All OTANI tires are designed with sufficient under tread that allows Regrooving without affecting the casing strength. For a detailed demonstration of the Regrooving process, kindly watch our video in the below link: URL: https://youtu.be/Y1BwLnP5Ny4
Retreading A process of revamping the tires where the treads of worn tires are replaced with the new ones, which is also called recapping or remolding of tires. New treads are applied to the casings of old tires with the sole aim of giving a new lease of life. Casings should be durable enough to withstand multiple retreads over time to offer the following benefits. Benefits: • Get 80% of new tire mileage with 40% of new tire cost spent on retreading • Significant reduction in cost per kilometer • Reducing the disposal in landfills • Lesser consumption of raw materials • Lowering the CO2 emissions
40%
OTANI strongly recommends retreading which usually yields 30% lesser cost per kilometer as compared to the new tires, where the more retreads are applied to the original tire, the more value you are drawing out of the initial investment you made on the tire. Applying new treads is just like having a new tire, where the grip and traction improves, rolling resistance drops that in turn causes less pressure on the engine and yields more mileage while consuming less fuel.
