PROFILE I am an Egyptian landscape architect based in Milan. I am interested in research and the regeneration of degraded and fragile territories and Landscapes. I believe the careful research and analysis of any given area is the best way to reach a design that is socially and environmentally responsible. I have a tendency to work with my hands using sketches and models before starting the digital process of any project, and I believe this way helps me get a clearer perspective of the area I am about to research or design. 2

Guide

The selected list of works spans different disciplines and scales that I have worked in or collaborated in doing during my two years masters program of “Landscape Architecture. Land Landscape Heritage” in Politecnico di Milano. I tried to include as much as possible of each project to show, not only the process, but also the technical and presentation skills required to achieve each of these projects. The work is organized in chronological order, which represents also my actual growth during these two years. The different tools/ programs used in the work span a wider range with each and every new project.

Permanence Of The Past

Connections Of The Past

San Cristoforo Church & Bridge

Il Naviglio Grande

The Railway

The church is important because it was built in a focal point, in which every boat had to pass from San Cristoforo. The saint to whom the church was dedicated, was the protector of sailors & pilgrims. These reasons contributed to consider the church as a landmark and reference for people since the Medieval period

It is the main canal of the Navigli system and was constructed around 1100. It was used mainly as an infrastructure to transport stones from Lago Maggiore to Duomo Cathedral for its construction. Around 1800 it was substituted by Railway transportation

Was built around 1891, it was a part of the connection MilanoVigevano and had a great impact on the economy of the area. Its presence contributed to the growth of surrounding industries and allowed the increase of residential buildings in this periphery

Ghosts of the past The Casina

Torre & Piazza Delle Milizie

The Fountains

The Historical Rivers

Cascina Campagnola is a ruined farm that is a clear evidence of the past. In the last 10 years the farm was used by gypsies and it was prone to various preservation themes, while nowadays it remains a piece of history that may lose it’s cultural value forever

It took its name from the tower which was built in the 1930s to the local fascist club, and was used for various uses during the second post-war period. It was left abandoned in the late 60s, it was subject to numerous protests about the degradation that caused the demolition of the building in1972.

They are not used anymore. These two public works are placed as mirror in the green area behind the square. They were built in the 20s of the last century. They were built with concrete and they have a semi circular shape. They were used in the past as a swimming pool, laundry and car washing.

The site has to historical passing perpendicular to Il Naviglio: 1.The Olona River, which is covered and passes right under the middle of the project site 2.The Lambro Meridionale River, which remains till now.

Mounds

Elevated path

Mounds were created to give off the feeling of enclosure to people in the wadi area, where they can enjoy a relaxing hike without having to worry about the surrounding urban traffic jam or hectic city life-style

A wooden suspended path to provide a different view to the city

Gravel edges The pond edge was lined with medium sized gravel for weed control

Rocky edges Around the edge of the pond are huge rocks to act as natural seatings

Viewing platforms An elevated platform with framed views of the surroundings. The frames are created by the existing urban fabric and the tree allocation that limits the visitors visual access and creates curiosity

Gravel lined and groundcover surrounding the pond provide relaxation opportunities. UnHigher level walk Trees towards the site boundary mown grass on most of the provide an elevated are not too leafy, and they have banks increase biodiversity a high cantilever in order not to framed views of all the with a range of deep water surrounding historical obstruct views and shallow water. The pond and landscape is a representation of thr olona elements like the river that is still till this day church, the railway, Site boundary treatment running under the site area cascina... Etc. inspired from the public garden of porta venizia where it is made easy for public to to have only a visual access to the park

Woodland lower level walk provide seclusion and quiet shade on hot summer days yet clear sun path created in the autumn by the reds and oranges created by the fall trees

Boundary trees and under trees low planting provide both privacy and shelter from road noise and colder dry winter winds. Existing exss11 road/ bridge which acts as a main envelope to the site and one the greater sources of sound pollution

At the first glance, one can notice how perfect the city of Lugano is, both in the aesthetic and technical aspects. The Project on the contrary avoids this part of the city and jumps on to the other side of the lake, where unmaintained paths and abandoned docks. By maintaining and improving the paths and creating places where visitors can stop and look at the city from the other side. The design has targeted the more natural part of the city where water land and mountain were left unchecked. By creating simple attractions that are low budget and well maintained more visitors can visit this part of the unknown area of Lugano. The design consists of three main focuses: 1. The first was to redesign and reclaim the dock area. 2. The Second was to enhance the shore and add a beach area for users. 3. The third was to create a path that goes high up to the mountain.

The Project aims at investigating the causes of waste currently happening in the Porto di Mare area in Milano, and the measures by which the area can be remediated to be a positive participant in the surrounding context. The preliminary analysis of the site concluded the two main types of ‘wasteland’ currently existing in the area divided also into two different zones, as follows: •

Misused area: due to the underground water contamination by heavy metals and construction debris. Also due to the soil taking along the years leaving it barren and very close to the water table.

Not-used (abandoned): due to the poor landscape quality and almost zero maintenance. The existence of an ‘x-discarica’ doesn’t allow any structural intervention or landscape enhancements. And finally, the electrical lines that ruin the landscape and force the rule of a certain setback from any structure (new or old).

The strategy for regeneration is also divided into two, as follows:

20

For the Misused area: the total remediation of the area through phyto-remediation (using sunflowers and other toxin-tolerating plants), and using the lower areas close to the water table as wetlands. To remove all public access and circulation in the area, to become an area of natural regeneration. Applying some viewing platforms to monitor and maintain the area.

For the Not-used area: to enhance the overall landscape quality through maintenance and the regrading of the distorted parts of the soil grade to allow for a better surface draining. Remove unnecessary access & circulation paths, while consolidating only two main ones to allow for a targeted accessibility behavior. Adding minimal but attractive activities along the paths.

Throughout the past 50-70 years, the territory of the Marine has been marked by the steady abusive increase of the built fabric, that, without following any communal or environmental rule - seeking only an imaginary dream of a second home close to the beach has lead to complete decay in the urban fabric and the surrounding agriculture land. The effects of the colliding phenomena form the characteristics of the site: like two forces, a touristic invasion concentrated in the summer period on one side, and the continuous year-round natural cycles (flood, saltwater intrusion, etc) on the other. In this battle-field, a neutral ground - now called the fringe - not belonging to either of the two forces taking part in the conflict, is shaped. It is the moment where two opposite phenomena combine and interact, in a perspective of safety and respect from both sides. The fringe, now becoming the symbol of the transition from a “no man’s land” to “everyone’s land”, is composed by a combination of elements that make it always identifiable. A continuous path and the visual presence of a series of specific trees (the iconic umbrella pine) located along, make you never get lost in the fringe. By crossing different territories, from the areas most in contact with the sea to the inland agricultural domain, the fringe:

28

Provides a general infrastructural organization of the actual site;

Moves the attention from the coast to the inner landscape, where the still unexplored quality of natural bodies is restored;

Finds an answer to the issue of the risk, by managing seasonal floods, salt water intrusion, and the demolition of overly abusive buildings too exposed to the hazard.

The project aims at connecting the urban area around the San Bernardino river to the wilderness of the more natural one close to the Val Grande National Park. The main device is giving the possibility to approach the water in different and safer ways, through different interventions that work as landmarks and eye catchers in the landscape to enhance curiosity. Part of the actual path is reused, creating some visibility corridors in particular points that offer visual frames of the lake, while a new segment of path has been created in the central area on the opposite side of the river bank. The reason is to make the most out of some points considered to be attractive, that become the focus of the new path and a symbol that characterize the landscape. Somewhere they permit to walk down to the river to touch its water, in other places they allow an overview from high, eventually they make people walk in a carved side of a rock, appreciating the materiality of the landscape. The idea was born after having realized that in this area the connection with water is mainly acoustic, while almost never physical. The way the new landmarks are located permit to see them appearing from the wilderness of nature while partly hiding the way to reach them, leading to an adventurous quest that gets farer from the river to get closer again only when the point is reached. By thinking at different access points located close to the villages along the river, the goal is to educate and provide information along the paths as visitors walk up towards the mountains to make people aware of the landscape they are discovering. The experience is related to the users, as it can turn into an interesting way of getting known to a new place for tourists and visitors, attracted by some new catching interventions, or overlaps with the system of paths well known by locals, that find places of memories in a familiar landscape.

Participation in the 3rd Phase of the Competition with the Studio Team of Laboratorio Permanente

Detailed description of activities carried out as per Internship supervisors: The tasks assigned to the trainee span different areas of urban and architectural design participating in the design process of the masterplan for the redevelopment of two disused railway yards North and South of the periphery of Milan, Scalo Farini and San Cristoforo. The trainee has joined a work team, with a wide range of heterogeneous skills, in order to give the student the opportunity to broaden his knowledge of both technical and cultural issues. The student was particularly dedicated to the elaboration of landscape plan, quantification of project cost and its estimation, participating in both the design phase and drawing, and the realization of the illustrative report and presentation of the same. During the course of the internship, Ahmed quickly entered into the dynamics of the studio by performing some tasks himself with a quality above expectations. All the objectives set were carried out on time, with respect to the pre-established deliveries. The assignments were faced and completed with diligence and seriousness, showing a good ability to organize the work in the team, and an autonomous good ability to relate with other people in the study, but above all an excellent ability to put on the field the skills acquired in academic training.

Master Thesis Based on a Previous Studio Research

Individual Work

The steady abuse of the coastal areas of Lecce during the past 50-70 years, marked by the rapid increase of unauthorized buildings and road network, and the misuse of the natural elements (water bodies, sand dunes, wetlands...etc), has robbed the area of its value throughout time, turning it to an uninhabited and defenseless wasteland. The area once known for its extensive agriculture and the existence of some of the oldest olive groves, is now regressing everyday away from the shoreline, due to the loss of soil value and nutrients crucial for such an agricultural growth. Nonetheless, such an expansion of the urban built environment cannot simply be taken back or removed, nor can it be overlooked. Such an expansion has to be addressed, it has to be consciously targeted with a socially responsible design intent. This historical unauthorized expansion has been benign for some time, but not anymore. This abuse of the land and of the natural environment has lead to the decay of the existing fabric of natural systems, extending to the intruding urban settlements. The proposed topic of research and design is to study the limits of the clashing forces of nature and man-made expansions within a politically and socially acceptable framework. Trying to reach an area neutral enough to allow for the restoration of natural cycles, while subtly controlling the expansion of the built environment. In short, this approach creates a separation of different areas where the natural and the built systems are clearly segregated with an intermediate zone that falls under neither of the two systems (Fringe). The area of interest for the general research shall be the whole extension of the coast of Lecce, where the extent of damage and the progress of urban expansion can be mapped, while showing areas with natural capabilities and potential of restoring the natural cycles and urban settlement consolidation zones. For project (design) purposes, the areas starting from Torre Rinalda, passing by Spiaggiabella till Torre Chianca will be the main focus, where the initiation of the proposed design concept can be shown as a prototype solution for the problem. This particular focus is selected for the extent of damage it has reached. The proposed design can hopefully be sophisticated enough to be applied along the whole coast of Lecce. The project represents a small step in the pursuit of creating more resilient urban-tolerant coastal settlements along the eastern coastline of Apulia region.
