Creative Centre in Bahrain Type: International competition Year: 2016 Status: team work Place: Bahrain Concept Childhood is a magical time .Creativity may be a hallmark of childhood, but it is not just child’s play. In fact, identifying and nurturing creative potential in the early years of childhood is crucial for raising the next generation of innovators whose mindset and problem solving skills will solve today’s (and tomorrow’s) greatest challenges.. We propose and implement those components through our design through design elements by different and unusual treatments to contain children’s mind and movement. Movement has been achieved through continuous path around the main court instead of moving in ordinary doors & corridors. Moreover, the walls are designed in a freeform, no sharp edges nor rigid lines in the border of the workshop.

The spaces we created are furnished with dynamic flexible objects, which can be easily joined together or separated in several ways. There are strong vertical and horizontal interaction in the building, vertically it has been achieved through the openings between the floors, horizontally it reveals in the transparent partitions between the workshops.

Egypt's pavilion in Venice Type: National competition Year: 2016 Status: team work Place: Venice PARALLEL CITIES The design concept depicts three issues facing the city and its citizens in the midst of uneven distribution of resources. Despite of the urban growth over agricultural land, diminishing green spaces, and the housing question, people improvise in the in-between spaces. In-between spaces Today, Egypt is witnessing a set of battles affecting its built environment and influencing the shape of its cities. In Cairo, the housing question between unplanned informalities and planned compounds on the edge represent a key battle over resources with the absence of the state. Since 1991, the Structural Adjustment Program and neoliberal reforms has triggered a new political economy of privatization. The withdrawal of the state from the provision of dwelling, basic needs, and urban amenities have disenfranchised many citizens in their quest for a decent and dignified life.

Today, Egypt is witnessing a set of battles affecting its built environment and influencing the shape of its cities.
Despite of the soaring reality in the public domain, the land and housing condition, people articulate their everyday activities in the given built environment using in-between spaces. A rich array of experiences occurs in urban pockets making life bearable. In Egyptian cities, it is very common to find an alley hosting a funeral followed by a party wedding and a joyful gathering in the next day. Children’s swings and football playgrounds are vivid social activities that are informally planned. Newspaper shops by the street corners, flower shops under flyovers, and activities beneath pedestrian flyovers envisage another facet of social practices in a dire economy. The succession of events over the same space at different times reflect a society making the best of the current situation; it is an implicit pattern language. It is a display of an unorganized civic society operating off the radar. There is no winning or losing in such battles, but rather an everyday struggle in search of hope.
UDER THE FLYOVER
This shot is an abstraction of the activities of under the bridge and left over spaces like microbus stations, gathering areas, small cafeterias, etc.
ARCHITECTURE OF THE COMPOUNDS
The shot includes a real built elevation of a villa in a suburban compound in Cairo with predictions of improvisation in the future due to people’s unplanned interventions.
THE FLYOVER
This panorama sums up the overall image of the pavilion showing the contrast between the forground and the background, and asserting the idea of urban sprawl over the suburban planned communities.
BETWEEN ALLYES
The sensations between the walls imitates the experience of the Egyptian alleys, bringing the same architectural and sociocultural elements, colors, materials and proportions. [Ahmed yusuf] [Portfolio 2015]

aspace inspace by [if-ideasforward] Type: international competition Year: 2015 Status: team work This competition was organized for only 24 hours as a time to be submitted .
A
s the societies nowadays move fast toward developing, It leaves us little time to push the barriers of our current reality, to stop and separate ourselves from the existing stress we face in life. Separating ourselves through an event is effective and helpful but we always fear time, that the event itself takes time plus the time we waste in traveling to our magnificent event. Our proposal aims to combine the 4 coordinates that every event has (X,Y,Z and T), without wasting time in traveling and without leaving the existing (X,Y,Z). We created ASPACE INSPACE that provides an opportunity to reflect, think and rest. As we do in our daily lives we separate ourselves by disabling sense of hearing using headphones and sense of seeing through covering eyes. The dragged cylinder takes you through a journey to your own unknown, separates you from the surrounding atmosphere to an atmosphere you create by yourself. This space includes a ringed screen around your head and a sound system. The proposed idea gives the opportunity to adapt your own cosy atmosphere using these tools.

Urban innovation by [CUFE-AUC-Megwra] Type: international competition Year: 2015 Status: team work Place: 6th of october city, EGYPT
Solve from Within
Most of the governmental housing projects lack the sense of identity, and characterised by the vast areas of open spaces, that may not be used because of it lacks intimacy on human scale .
Existing situation includes varios opportionities and strengths but the challenge is how to Re-organize the components of the space We will focus our attention on the quality of public spaces in order to make neighborhoods that feel safe, comfort, and lively
It is noticed that people usually try by their own efforts to improve the quality of space in the closest spaces from the entrances and walls of their residential buildings - Improve safety in lower floors - More clean than other open spaces - Gathering near entrance - Growing food crops - Refinishing the entrances and walls of ground floor This observation means that people feel responsibility and belonging to the small space (around the entrance) more than other larger open spaces.
BELONGING RESPONSIBILITY Our proposal suggests enlarging these spaces which people feel responsibility and belonging to.
existing situation
proposed situation
When large amont of people are responsible for the place, it turns to be a neglected space. Making the spaces less public or shared by people increases people’s responsibility and sense of belonging. Families that live in the same residential building represent a small community. This small community is suggested in our proposal to be the core of development for the competition’s site and the similar cases in new cities of Egypt.
Wooden Pallet 100cm*70cm
The idea of using the wooden pallets came from the industrial zone, where they store large amounts of it for low prices. They are in very good conditions, sold for 25 EGP per pallet, and 1000 EGP for 1 ton of pallets
Daytime The open spaces are mostly used as playgrounds for the kids, and gathering spaces for their parents.
Night time Open spaces are mainly used for events like weddings, funerals and movie nights.
[Ahmed yusuf] [Portfolio 2015]
[23]
Compositions
1st composition This composition is mainly designed to accomodate the kids’ needs for safe playgrounds in front of their homes. Parking lots can be transformed into playgrounds at daytime.
2nd composition This composition is mainly designed to accomodate the people’s needs for seatings. Parking lots can be transformed into playgrounds at daytime.
3rd composition This composition is flexible to be used by all age categories. It provides seats for adults and playgrounds for children. Parking lots can be transformed into playgrounds at daytime.
Waste managment
Recyclying graywater
- The rubbish of each building is collected in 3 sorted rubbish bins (Organic waste Glass waste- Paper Waste). The inhabitants of every building are possible for their rubbish bins.
- Graywater is water from washing machines, showers and bathroom sinks. It is wastewater that can contain some soap, salts, hair, suspended solids and bacteria, but that is clean enough to water washing cars, flushers and Inedible plants (trees, grass, shrubs ...) - Black water is water from toilets and kitchen sinks . It requires biological or chemical treatment and disinfection before re-use
- The chicken coop waste and organic waste are collected in compost then used as a fertiliser for the community gardens. - Workshops may be held in the neighborhood to help people know how to recycle their waste, and to spread the idea in the neighboring districts.
- Our proposal suggests changing the drainage system of the flats to separate blackwater from greywater to be able to reuse it. - This intervention in buildings and properties will take place in second phase after improving acceptance and trust in first phase
Phasing The project starts with one unit and spreads out by increasing the scope of intervention and amount of people that will interact within it . Success in each phase makes a public proof and prepares inhabitants and other participants to next phase. Evaluation and modifications after each phase are easier because of the flexibility of the project . PHASE 1
Begin with the core of development suggested in our proposal in one building .
PHASE 2
success in the previous action make a public proof that people can build somthing when they work together . The Idea take place in other buildings .
PHASE 3
Enlarge the scope of intervention from spaces around the entrances to the open spaces in cluster. That means increasing number of people interact and work together using same skills they learned from previous phase.
PHASE 4
The neighborhood became more safe and lively .The Idea spreads out enlarging the scope of intervention to the puplic spaces in the center (parking areas, school, workshops, shops, etc). People are more acceptable to participate .
PHASE 5
Applying the Idea on similar cases in new cities with modifications in materials and components and its distribution based on the context .

Temporary cinema by [AC-CA] Type: international competition Year: 2014 Status: team work Place: Dakar, Senegal Dakar is the capital and largest city in Senegal. It is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the westernmost city on the African mainland. Its position, on the western edge of Africa, is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port. Dakar coast represents the social and economic life of the city . Many activities take place on the beach such as tourism uses , fishing and selling fish , open markets , sports and music and dancing. Our proposal suggests the coast as the scope of the temporary cinema
Providing shelter to beach vendors, especially fish vendors, will protect them from the constant rain in Dakar. That will make them more capable of working
The pattern of boats layout is an existing pattern on Dakar beaches. Fishers use them at the morning, and leave them on the beach the rest of the day. They sell their fish next to the place of their parked boats.

[27]
cinema space night time At night all the rooms are closed and dedicated to serve the spectators Fish Market space daytime Fish Markets are a common activity along the coast of Dakar. At day time, the spaces of the cinema are used to serve the fish market. The sheltered spaces help to protect vendors from the rains. Some boats are used for fishing at the morning. The remaining boats are rearranged to transform the hall into a sea-food court.
Multi purpose space daytime When the cinema is moved to any place other than a fish market, the spaces are transformed at day time to multiuse spaces. Possible uses of the space include a gathering space, or a community development center with a lecture hall. The boats can be re-arranged to form the boudries of a playground.
Structural Design The structure consists of an equal sided triangle to make it easy to erect and demount. There is no need to give numbers to the members because they are all the same. The triangle is a stable structure that will need no foundatioons. The triangular shape brings no worries about the rain most of the year in Dakar Transportation The whole structure is transported by boats. All the cinema components including the members, tents and the screen are transported by the boats. All boats have chairs with foldable backs to help shipping more items in a boat.
Boats Design Boats are typical imitation of Dakar fishing Boats with slight alternatives in the seating quality. Seatings backs are foldable to add flexibility to the boats’ functions (Food Cour) for example A boats capacity of spectators was well considered.Their are 2 main sizes of boats with two different capacities of 26 spectator and 23 spectator per boat.

Al alfy street renovation Type: Urban Design-post graduate Year: 2014 Status: team work Place: downtown, Cairo, Egypt
if
Downtown is the city’s heart, its pedestrian areas are Downtown’s own heart. They give a human face to this chaotic urban space and reinvent the meaning and function of “the street.” Off Emad Eddin Street, an old hub for casinos and night clubs in the 1920s, is el-Alfy Street. This one is named after a Mamluk prince who founded Azbakia--a district remodeled by Khedive Ismail, in his attempt to modernize 19th-century Cairo, after Parc Monceau in Paris. Akher Sa’a restaurant is the street’s main attraction nowadays. El-Alfy Street is also strewn with convenient benches for dwellers to sit, rest, eat, or exchange words of love. It’s a spot where the busy place of the city slows down.
Activity Map
Al-Alfy st.’s recommendation - Most of uses in the ground floor are cafes, take away restaurants , dine in restaurant and patisseries therefore the has good potential to be an open food court . - Upgrading the types and brands of exisiting cafes are essential but taking in consider keeping the same style of food such as zooba, Nola, Feshawy, Just falafel - The investors might rent the streets from the governorate, chaning the use of the empty apartment in the typical floors and raise the quality of the street such as Ismillia company, El futtaim, Amer group .
Main Vision Upgrading downtown cairo, reviving and creating a destination for all Egyptians to live, work, shop and socialize. the aim of restoring the buildings and upgrading their infrastructure to suit contemporary requirements for residential, commercail, and cultural spaces, while celebrating the original edifices that comprise Downtown’s architectural significance Condsider 26 july as a commercial hub, Azbkya park as a cultural hub and Al-Alfy street and Saraya Azbkya open food court ( entertainment hub ), by Upgrading the main axes linking between them ( 26 july street and Alfy street ) .
