Speed it up or slow it down with audiobooks
Do you ever wish you were a speed reader? The library has a book devouring weapon at your disposal that you might not know about. Think that narrator is going a bit too fast for you to catch all the details? Likewise, you can slow down your audiobook experience. You can “speed listen” your way through audiobooks by adjusting the speed of their narration. Now audiobook players automatically incorporate pitch correction. The tone is the same, but the tempo is faster. Often, within a minute, the brain accepts the speed as normal and you can listen to more of a book’s content without losing any comprehension. Some people even find listening to books at faster speeds stops their mind from wandering. “Since I’ve started this, I’ve gradually increased my listening speed. I listen to fiction at 1.5 speed and nonfiction at double speed,” said Digital Services Manager Jack Bower. He swears by the listening technique. “I now look forward to listening opportunities like long car rides, exercise or a sink of dirty dishes. I’ve even started doing this with podcasts.” If you want to give it a try, we recommend starting slow. Test out 1.2 speed at first, and then increase incrementally until you find it too fast and return to the level you are comfortable with. The standard speed can also be decreased if you would prefer a slower narration. Both of the eAudiobook platforms available through the library, cloudLibrary and hoopla, allow you to adjust narration speed. Need help? Ask library staff to show you how to download audiobooks and adjust their speed. Get started with eAudiobooks today by visiting ahml.info/borrow/ebooks.
