SENSORY ENVIRONMENTS IN NASI LEMAK LIVING GALLERY & LEARNING SPACE, THAT ENHANCE FOOD LEARNING The “Nasi Lemak House” would be a great addition to Kampong Bharu’s urban fabric, offering much additional character to the food district (HALAMAN JAMU) and food culture of Kampong Bharu. 02 Co-Recreational Office Hub In Gelugor, Penang. M.Arch (Year 4, Semester 2) Location : Gelugor, Penang Project type : Office building
Optimising daylight performance by exploring the design potential of skylight roof baffles The Co-recreational Office Hub building provides a creative co-working space and rental office for local entrepreneurs. It is located in Gelugor, Penang. The concept was to reconnect three design principles involving space, humans and nature, and to implement these in working and recreational environments, as well as communal space. The building is designed to optimise daylight performance, using a few strategies. The first involves skylight roof baffles, whose function is to filter direct sunlight into the building and only allow reflected sunlight in. A second strategy involves a light shelf. This helps control the quantity of sunlight into the building from the façade. A final strategy uses the concept of a green courtyard, to help diffuse all the sunlight into the building.

03 Children Home:
Social Housing Proposal – A Child-friendly Housing Design M.Arch (Year 4, Semester 1) Location : Lima Kedai, Johor Project type : Social housing
The central aim of this research is to propose social housing with designs that are child-friendly and emphasise theories of child development through architectural perspectives and design. The objectives of this study are three-fold: to discover current issues social housing faces, with regard to children; to explore building programs and designs the involve children’s needs and behaviours; and to propose social housing for children that improves and assists in developing the quality of their lives. The study has been carried out by conducting literature reviews, case studies, live observations and surveys in select low-cost housing in Johor. During the course of the research, it was discovered that with correct design strategies there are numerous possibilities for creating good, child-friendly housing. These include the integration of play areas, nature play, living unit designs and providing facilities for children. These strategies, it is felt, can fulfil the needs of both the child and the family.

01 Rumah Kangsar
Dialogue between Nature & Culture Bsc Arch (Year 3, Semester 6) Location : Kuala Kangsar Project type : Boutique Hotel
SITE PLAN
Rumah Kangsar is located next to a natural area, where people come to holiday and enjoy the natural environment. Nature has become an important factor for designers; the aim being to create a concept of ‘dialogues with nature’, where users can enjoy their accommodation while simultaneously being closely in touch with nature around them. From that idea, the project’s design concept was developed with the added inspiration of ‘a touch of culture’, where users can also experience the visual beauty of many different traditional and contemporary décor made by the local community in this themed hotel. The inspiration helped further transform the design concept to, ‘Dialogues with Nature and Culture.’

02 Vernacular Translated
An Interpretive Centre in Kuala Kangsar Bsc Arch (Year 3, Semester 6) Location : Kuala Kangsar Project type : Boutique Hotel
Kuala Kangsar is famously known for its royalty, heritage and culture. As one of the most popular towns in Perak, most tourists visit Kuala Kangsar for its elements of significance. However, some of these elements are not really promoted, for example its own heritage which is Malay Vernacular Architecture. This situation leaves the urban pattern of the town at a tremendous disadvantage. The proposal of an Interpretive Centre located at Persisiran Sungai, it is hoped, will help enhance and advance all the elements in Kuala Kangsar, particularly the Malay Vernacular Architecture. The project aimed to educate and provide information to tourists and raise awareness among the locals about the uniqueness of Malay Traditional Architecture.
DESIGN CONCEPT
The design proposed a new contemporary building based on the concept of ‘SPACE’ in Malay vernacular architecture, where there are three central elements namely: anjung, rumah ibu and rumah dapur. These ‘spaces’ serve differing functions while the quality of space is also different. With this in mind, the interpretive centre focused on the concept of these ‘three central design spaces’. In this way, the lobby functioned as, or represented, ‘anjung’; the gallery functioned as ‘rumah ibu’ and the café took the part of ‘rumah dapur’. This interpretive centre was designed using the passive design system.

03 Fan Chuan
A Budget Hotel in Petaling Street Year 2, Semester 4 Location : Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur Project type : Budget Hotel The idea was inspired by the history of Petaling Street. Long ago, the Chinese migrated to Tanah Melayu to set up the tin mining industry. This later provided Petaling Street with its special identity. This budget hotel was named after the unforgotten history of the place that is Fun Chuan – the sailing ship. This symbolized the history of the migration of the Chinese. Because of its rich history along with it being an attractive spot for tourists, it became a perfect site to design a budget hotel for backpackers to rest before resuming their journey.
The special feature of this budget hotel is the canopy roof that mimics the sail of a ship. This makes the hotel stand out from surrounding buildings. People walking through the alley can see a series of steel columns on the building, representing the mast of the ship. The spaces are arranged and designed thriftily so as to give the essence of ‘space inside a ship’. The east side of the building is a public area; the west side, a private area. In addition, the sleeping area is gender-segregated – males on the lower floor; females on the upper floor. Timber and steel are the main materials used, helping create the ambience of a ship. The tectonic of this building is the combination of timber and steel which helps give the Fun Chuan a rigid look.
