AHP Executive Forum
Managing the Hospital-Foundation Relationship 10:15 am–4:30 pm In 2006, the AHP Journal article “In Search of a Best Practice Model for the Hospital/Foundation Relationship” was the first comprehensive piece published in health care philanthropy literature to explore the unique relationship between hospitals and their foundations. Promoted by the appearance of documented cases of legal conflict between hospitals and foundations, and drawing on wisdom and experience from the field, the article espoused a best practice model reflective of a high-functioning, synergistic relationship between hospital and foundation in the shared mission of philanthropy. Since 2006, the issue of the hospital/foundation relationship has become of even greater concern to development leaders. In 2010, a national survey of Canadian hospital foundations by KCI asked leaders to define the top ten issues of concern; the number one issued identified was “relationship with the hospital”. Why is the hospital/foundation relationship now of emerging concern for hospital foundation leaders? What are the factors present in the relationship and/or the environment that have given rise to this concern? How does the health of the relationship impact philanthropic outcomes?
10
This session will examine issues inherent in the hospital/ foundation relationship, strategies to build (or rebuild) the relationship, elements deemed essential to a high-functioning relationship between the two, and how best to set and manage expectations for both parties.
Registration Attendees must have 10-plus years of experience in executive leadership role. You must pre-register for this forum. See the registration form on page 23.

The Design of Good Work Getting the Job Done and Developing Leadership
In this session, learn from the experiences of this panel of dynamic leaders who will share the things they wish they had known in taking on the management of their organizations and share their stories in building their careers. You will take away stories of success and avenues to avoid along with advice from colleagues with years of experience before you take the next step in your career!
Panel Discussion
How many of your direct reports will become CEO’s due to the work they have done with you? This animated and engaging session will address directly the myth of talent. Rather than searching for the “silver bullet” of so-called high potentials in our workplaces, attendees will learn how successful succession requires the good old fashioned challenge of leadership—designing the kind of work that accomplishes tasks while simultaneously creating better leaders. This session will be in a moderated press-conference format, where after a short address, the audience will be invited in teams to craft important questions to shape the conversation.

The Cornerstone Campaign
Governance in the New Era of Health Care: What the Research Revealed
The Cornerstone Campaign is the employee giving program at University Health Network. It is an integrated program reaching out to 13,000 staff at 4 hospitals, and offers a multitude of giving modalities (payroll deduction, monthly giving, major gifts, legacy giving, signature and employee-driven events, and a monthly 50/50 raffle.) What makes it unique, however, is that our employees may individually or collectively designate to the programs they care about most. This has been particularly successful when teamed with our capital campaigns. UHN employees have contributed/pledged nearly $5 million over the past 3 years. Learn more about this successful campaign at this casestudy session.

Grateful Patient Program Honours Health Care Heroes
What Keeps You Up at Night?
This session will introduce you to a new program launched by a medium sized hospital in New Brunswick as an alternative to patient mailings. New Brunswick is one of several provinces across Canada that do not have access to patient names. This program provides an opportunity for patients and their families to show appreciation for the outstanding care that they or a loved one has received during their hospital visit, by making a donation in their health care hero’s honour. Those recognized are informed by the foundation of the gift that was made in their honour and presented with a special “HERO” pin and certificate which has not only boosted donations but staff morale as well! This program works for hospitals of all sizes. This session will provide details of how to get a similar program started at your health care facility.

Shopping Calgary has a number of indoor shopping malls that qualify as destinations unto themselves. Find everything on your shopping list in the hundreds of name-brand stores at Chinook Centre, Market Mall or the new CrossIron Mills. Try one of Calgary’s farmers markets or independent shops for unique gifts.
Night Life Calgary’s nightlife heats up after sundown. Clubs, lounges and great restaurants of all sorts are dotted around the Downtown, Beltline and Uptown 17 Avenue districts.
Family Fun Looking for fun activities for mom, dad and the kids? Calgary has one of the youngest populations in the country, and where there are kids, there are things for kids to do. Fun things. Stalk life-sized dinosaurs at the Calgary Zoo or see the Rockies upside down aboard Calaway Park’s Vortex roller coaster—these and other family bonding experiences are Calgary’s bread and butter.
