Opening Keynote Session: Tim Madigan Monday, May 20, 8:30 am–9:45 am Tim Madigan wrote his first book in 1968 when he was 11 years old. His love of books, words and writing never waned, leading him from his small-town Minnesota upbringing to a career writing newspaper stories and eventually books that were more formally published and found by larger audiences. Tim worked as a sportswriter at a small paper after college at the University of North Dakota. He moved to Texas in the mid 1990s and became one of the most decorated newspaper reporters in Texas history—three times named the state’s top reporter—while writing about everything from sick children, serial killers, and cowboy poets to his own experiences as a husband and father. Madigan’s most recent book, “I’m Proud of You: My Friendship With Fred Rogers,” highlights his life-altering friendship with Fred Rogers (of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” fame), which began in 1995 when he profiled the children’s icon for the Star-Telegram.

Luncheon Keynote Session: Patrick M. Rooney, Ph.D. and the AHP Midwest Distinguished Philanthropist Award Presentation Monday, May 20, 11:45 am–1:00 pm Patrick M. Rooney is associate dean for academic affairs and research at the Indiana University School of Philanthropy. The first school dedicated to the study and teaching of philanthropy, the school improves philanthropy to improve the world. Rooney directs all of the school’s academic, degree and research programs and activities. He previously served as executive director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, the precursor to the School of Philanthropy, from 2008 through 2012. A nationally recognized expert on philanthropy and charitable giving, Rooney speaks frequently across the country on issues related to philanthropy and management of nonprofit organizations and has been quoted by national news media outlets such as PBS’s Nightly Business Report, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and USA Today.

In his keynote, Madigan will discuss his unlikely friendship with Rogers and the transformation and healing it gave to his life.

AHP Midwest Distinguished Philanthropist Award Monday May 20, 11:45 am–1:00 pm Each year, AHP members nominate individuals from the Midwest region whose contributions have generously supported health care in their communities. The nominations are carefully evaluated and a recipient is chosen. The AHP Midwest Distinguished Philanthropist Award is presented during the keynote luncheon event to publicly honor the recipient for his or her generous donations. This fast-paced one day fundamental workshop focuses on the basic elements of health care philanthropy and the role of development in a health care organization. This workshop reviews major areas of health care development including: major, planned, and annual giving; capital campaigns; policies; finance; marketing; as well as many others. This workshop is highly recommended for those new to health care development with less than three years experience, support staff and board members that need to understand the elements of health care development. Who says major gift programs cannot succeed in smaller shops? Find out how offices of one to eight people can introduce major giving into their operations. Planned giving, concierge services and major giving initiatives will be part of the conversation. Specific focus will be on how to organize your year, month and day to maximize appointments and getting out of the office. Through the experience of The Nebraska Medical Center’s four-year journey, this workshop will discuss lean management, needs assessment, strategic planning and the results of major gift fundraising in a small shop.

Innovative Strategy for Regional Fundraising

In January, the Department of Health and Human Services modified the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations including rules for fundraising. Make sure you are up to date on exactly what is covered, including changes to the Notice of Privacy Practices, protected health information (PHI) and the Minimum Necessary Standard, opt-out provisions, filtering data, and vendor and business associate agreements. Genesis Health System, headquartered in Davenport, Iowa, is comprised of 87 locations across 17 counties in two states, Iowa and Illinois. Several of its facilities have philanthropic foundations that raise money locally for the priorities of a local health facility. However, many of the most costly health problems in the region (e.g., diabetes) require not a focus on facilities, but a focus on population health. Genesis has begun a groundbreaking effort to regionalize fundraising for such boundaryless problems without compromising the community-based fundraising efforts. This workshop will present the demographic and health data that led to the regional insight, and discuss the structure and business plan for Genesis Philanthropy, the health system’s regional fundraising brand, as a model for regionalizing fundraising for complex social problems. Hotel Reservations The Hyatt Regency Indianapolis is offering AHP conference attendees a special rate of $149 for single/double occupancy, which includes complimentary wireless internet in the sleeping room, plus applicable taxes. Call the hotel at 1-888-421-1442 to make your room reservations and be sure to identify yourself as an Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) conference attendee. The hotel rate cut-off date is Friday, April 12, 2013. Reservations made after this date will be on a space and rate available basis.

Please remember that there are limited rooms available at the discounted rate. Make your reservation early to avoid disappointment. AHP cannot guarantee that rooms will be available once the reserved block of rooms is taken. The hotel check-in time is 3:00 pm and check-out is 12:00 pm.

Conference Attire The conference attire is business casual. Consider bringing a jacket or light sweater since temperatures can fluctuate in the air-conditioned meeting rooms.

Indianapolis Weather The average day temperature in May is 73°F and in the evenings is 51°F.

Airport Information The closest airport is the Indianapolis International Airport (IND), which is 14 miles from the Hyatt Regency. The taxi fare is approximately $35 one-way. There are shared ride services available for as low as $16. More information can be found near the baggage claim area.

Hotel Parking Onsite parking is available for $22 per day and $30 per day for valet parking. There is also 24-hour self parking at World of Wonders (Circle Centre), one-half block from the hotel at Maryland and Illinois Street, for $20 overnight. 13

Early Registration Discount Save $60 when you register for this conference by the early registration deadline! Your registration and payment must be postmarked or received online by Friday, April 5, 2013. Mailed or faxed registrations cannot be processed without payment.

Executive Discount To encourage hospital executives and board members to attend AHP conferences with their development staff, AHP offers an executive discount. The CEO, president or executive director of a hospital (not foundation), or a hospital trustee or volunteer, may attend this conference with an AHP member from the same organization at the AHP member rate.
