Dare to Dream Budget cuts, staff layoffs, reduction in allocation for development and marketing and increased scrutiny about how we raise and spend money for health care—not exactly a scenario for taking time to dream. But that is exactly what our keynote speaker, Kay Sprinkel Grace, is going to encourage us to do. In this inspiring keynote address, Kay Sprinkel Grace will offer inspiration for dreaming, tell us why we should dream and provide stories and statistics about what happens to organizations that have dreamed. While “getting back to zero” is something we all have to do, it is the truly successful medical center or hospital that keeps a dream alive. If we don’t dream, who will? And how can we respond to the dreams of our donors if we don’t have dreams ourselves? It does not cost anything to dream. And that dream may be just what a major donor has been waiting to hear. Kay Sprinkel Grace understands the challenges of health care philanthropy as well as its opportunities, and brings her experience from other nonprofits to bear on the often challenging world of hospital-related volunteerism, outreach, community building and fund raising. She has worked with numerous hospitals, hospital systems, hospital foundations, and health foundations both in California and nationwide.

Secrets to Crafting High Impact Mission Stories
Giving in the Current Economy
Engaging Physicians in the Donor Cycle
This presentation will review the current economy and its impact on nonprofits. We will address these important questions: Will donors continue to give in the current environment? What type of donors will continue giving? What type of gifts will they be willing to give? What are the tools they will use in giving? What type of assets will donors be willing to give? What steps do nonprofits need to take to secure these gifts?
In this presentation, Mara McClellan, senior major gift officer, and Marc Rothenberg, Ph.D., M.D., will share how they partner together to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors for the best results. You will learn specific approaches they have used in each area of the donor cycle, hear real-life stories of successes and failures, and get to know some of the nuances of the physician/development relationship they have uncovered while working together. As part of this highly interactive session, participants are encouraged to raise questions and discussion points.
Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to create an emotional connection to your mission. Learn the “truisms” about crafting stories that will not only move others but also motivate them to action. This interactive session shares actionable information you can put to use immediately and examples of successfully told stories.

Major Gift Fundraising in a Small Shop
The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Fundraising Shops
Can small shops run effective major gift operations on a limited budget and staff? You bet! This session will demonstrate the experience of The Nebraska Medical Center midway through its five-year plan. With just 5.9 total FTE’s and a $1.0 million philanthropic budget, TNMC has seen nearly a 400 percent increase of dollars, donors and gifts in the last three years through its major gift program. Learn how detailed processes, line-item expenses and “lean management” engagement have all been instrumental to the success of a growing program.
Health care fundraising requires persistent, strategic effort in a complex, fast-moving environment. Fundraisers can be easily drawn into low-return, resource-intensive activities, but those professionals in rapidly expanding shops share key characteristics— disciplined focus on the board, delegation of details, asking early and often as well as four other traits. Ultimately, growing results requires new strategies and new structures. Guided by two health care philanthropy experts, this session will explore how to achieve and maintain these habits in your own shop.

We will share how our Grateful Family Initiative began in 2005. In what ways do we communicate with our families? How do we screen and qualify? What are the parameters we are looking for to fill our pipeline, and beyond? How do we work with our partners in the medical center to help their families express their gratitude? This session will discuss our initiative from its inception, up to improvements and advancement of our program to-date, including bridging the gap between annual fund and major gifts through a lead annual gifts program, metrics, staffing, materials, outside partnerships, examples of successes and lessons learned.

Family friendly experiences abound, from Kings Island, which features some of the best roller coasters in the nation, to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, rated by Zagat as one of the top three zoos in America. The conference will be held near Fountain Square in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. The square offers entertainment throughout the year and serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors who come to shop, dine and play. Cincinnati is proud to be your host for the 2012 AHP Midwest Regional Conference—we look forward to seeing you!
Attractions Enjoy Cincinnati’s museums and attractions, including the National Underground Freedom Center. Visit one of the country’s top-rated zoos or ride a wooden roller coaster at Kings Island.

Sports Did you know that Cincinnati is the birthplace of professional baseball? The Cincinnati Reds play at the Great American Ball Park.
Festivals Cincinnati offers a full calendar of music and food festivals. “Dating back to its roots as a rowdy town full of German immigrants who celebrated life with song, food and drink, Cincinnati has a standing tradition as a great place to have a good time.”
