This season our homewares are natural colours and textures mixed with some gorgeous blues and greens, perfect for life by the sea. I think you are going to love the range, much of which you can buy online for easy shopping. Thank you to all of you who made Christmas 2016 such a great experience. We kicked it off with an awesome night for our VIPs to preview of the new gift ranges back in November. And we were privileged to team up with Out and About with kids in Hawke’s Bay to make Christmas happier for many local families. Together, we were able to donate 40 soft toys which I’m sure would have put a smile on many faces. Chocolate brownie recipe
As forewarning, there’s very little that is healthy about this recipe, but it is so delicious! Perfect served with fresh berries. Ingredients: 2/3 cup flour 250g butter 2 cups of castor sugar 1/2 cup cocoa 4 eggs 2 tsp vanilla essence 400g dark chocolate Melt the butter Add in all the remaining ingredients and mix well Pour into a greased slice tin Bake for 30 minutes at 180oC Allow to cool in the tin.

Summer holiday essentials - tips from our beauty therapist With the warmer weather comes jandals, shorts, skirts and unfortunately drier skin. My Summer essentials include Avene thermal water spray and a good lip balm to hydrate the skin. The EOS lipbalms are great fun but the Avene lip cream is top of my list for effectiveness and lasting. Avene thermal water spray is ideal as a spritz and perfect to take down inflammation after hair removal or sunburn. My secret weapon would have to be my Adashiko Collagen and Noni gel. Organic sustainable sunscreen
Is it just a freckle? Sun protection is recommended when the UV index is 3 or higher. Try the Uv2Day app or see the sun protection alert for today’s UV index. We all know the slip, slop, slap and wrap golden rule.
Slip into a shirt and into some shade. Clothes are the most effective
barrier against UV rays, especially if they are made from tightly woven fabric, are dark colours and are loose fitting. Find natural or man-made shade and plan outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Any tanning of the skin is a sign that skin has been damaged so it is vital to on a broad-spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen on all areas of the body, even on cloudy days. Apply around 35mls for an adult evenly to clean dry skin, 20 minutes before going out into the sun. Reapply every two hours and after being in water or sweating.

Stay healthy in the sun Conscious of what we put on our body as well as in our body, the Coola range of sunscreens are formulated with organic, sustainable and locally sourced ingredients that add a touch of luxury to everyday. Now available in Hawke’s Bay at Ahuriri Pharmacy. Skin cancer is caused by UV radiation damaging our skin. UVA and UVB radiation can get through the atmosphere and cause sunburn in the short term and skin cancer in the long term. The Ultraviolet Index (UVI) is a measure of ultraviolet rays. The higher the number the more sun protection needed. Even on a mild day in Hawke’s Bay, the UVI can hit 10 (very high), the maximum being 11.
Slap on a broad-rimmed hat or a cap with flaps and wrap on a pair of close-fitting, wrap-around sunglasses.
We are more prone to skin cancers as we age or if we have fair or sun damaged skin, a family history of melanoma or a large number of moles, among other factors. If you are over 50 years, check yourself monthly by systematically checking each part of the body, including the scalp and soles of the feet. Signs to see your doctor ASAP are: • • • • •
New or changing spots A growing spot that is rough, dry or scaly A spot that has become thickened and raised bump A spot or sore that bleeds easily or is crusted over A sore that doesn’t heal
