Editor’s Note Hello! This is my first ever attempt of creating a magazine, and I am very proud of it. I wanted to create a magazine that uses different forms of visual and textual artistry. The theme of the magazine is dealing with newfound adulthood, and the struggles that may come with it. Hopefully, readers can relate and feel that they are not alone in their journey towards adulthood. Enjoy!

Interview with Holden Caulfield

Holden Caul eld is a ctional character in author J. D. Salinger's 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. Since the book's publication, Holden has become an icon for teenage rebellion and angst, and now stands among the most important characters of 20th-century American literature. Holden Caul eld, the 17-year-old narrator and protagonist of the novel, speaks to the reader directly from a mental hospital or sanitarium in southern California and explains his transition towards adulthood.

Me: Hello Holden, nice to meet you.

In a way, do you think you share that same struggle to reach your own gold ring?

Holden Caul eld: Hello, nice to meet you too. You should be glad that I’m here. The goddamn I guess I’ve been struggling to hold onto my bus was late and I almost decided to go back childhood. I keep trying to hang on to some home right then and there. memories but life keeps pushing me forward. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for Thanks for letting me know about it. I appreciate the gold ring, you gave to let them do it, and your presence here today. not say anything. If they fall o f, they fall o f, but it’s bad if you say anything to them. For Yup. me, if feels like I fell o f a long time ago when So...seventeen. That is an age that I have lived Allie died. I don’t want to talk about this through. Can’t say that I remember much. How have anymore. you handled your seventeen years of age? I can relate to that struggle. Since you are almost an Look. I didn’t come here to tell you my whole adult, do you feel any freedom that comes with life story, okay? But I can tell you that people aging? are phonies if they say their teenage lives were Freedom? Well, I guess I do feel like I’m more the years of their lives. Being a teenager is not great, but adulthood doesn’t look much better. in control of my life but I don’t want to disappear into the world of adults and How do you keep your sanity in these seemingly phonies. And I don’t know how much of that I unforgiving years of teenage and adult life? can control. Being an adult means having the I try to think about my brother, Allie. He died of freedom to do whatever the hell I want...but it also means losing the memories and leukemia and I just want to live a life that he doesn’t get a chance to have. I think of my sister connections to my childhood. I don’t know if I want to lose that. Phoebe too. She takes my mind o f of my troubles sometimes. There was this one time where Phoebe and I went to the zoo together. It’s funny because little Phoebe and all the other kids go on the carousel and try to reach for the gold ring. But when they do it, it looks like they are about to fall o f.

No one wants to forget about their childhood. Those memories cause the most nostalgia. I really hope I don’t. I don’t know how I’ve been able to live without Allie. Why do I get to be “free” when he doesn’t even get a chance to live?

4

You can’t change things from the past, but you can change your future. You get to use your freedom to be a friend and mentor to Phoebe. Phoebe is one of the only people I can truly connect with. She is so kind and understanding. Basically my polar opposite. Is this interview going to be over soon? Almost done. Great. Let’s lighten up the mood a bit. It seems like the freedom of near adulthood hasn’t been too bad for you. Could you tell me about your run-in with that stripper, Faith? Ugh. Do we really have to? The interview’s almost over, I promise. Okay. Well I wouldn’t say that the stripper encounter was a run-in. I have to admit that I was feeling pretty horny so I called a girl who wasn’t exactly a whore or anything. Her name was Faith something...Faith Kavanaugh? No wait. It was Faith Cavendish. I guess I messed it up when I yelled at her that it was now or never. But I can guarantee you that there is not as much freedom that adulthood supposedly o fers as you’d think.

Can you tell me more about that? Well, I went to the goddamn Lavender Room and tried to order a drink. The bartender has the goddamn nerve to ask me “What are you, twelve?” and then gave me a can of coke. Can you believe him? I’m seventeen and I stand at six feet two-and-a-half inches tall. I even have some grey hair for fucks sake. I admit, I act more like a 13-year old than an adult, but I do not look like I’m 12. Other people will always try to ruin your freedom. Don’t even get my started about the hypocrisy of all these phonies. I don’t look old enough to get alcohol, but apparently I look old enough to pay the 13 dollar tab for Bernice and the other two girls - Marty and Laverne. All of these adults are phonies. Holden, have you ever considered that your view on people and the world is a little negative? Not everyone is a phony as you say. Well, you certainly are. Why did you want an interview with me in the rst place? Goddamn journalists. Always want to use people and their stories for your own career advancement, right? You’re just another goddamn adult with an in lated superiority complex. Why should I believe you give a damn? You don’t. Now please just go. Just leave me alone. You got what you wanted, now go. I’m done talking to you. Okay...but this is my workplace. [Disgruntled, Holden gets up and leaves, slamming the door behind him.]

last phone call When I got inside the car, my parents were furious about my phone bill. I have exceeded by monthly bill by a thousand. My mom showed me the bill and I saw your numbers imprinted all over the paper. All of your midnight phone calls were listed there. My mom asked, “Who are you talking to?” “It was just a friend. I didn’t realize we were talking for so long” I said. Of course I remembered the hours we stayed on the phone. But I didn’t mind. She didn’t know I was calling my imaginary friend. I missed you and who you made me be. I miss that version of myself. I can’t find him anymore.

Can you tell us about your typical daily routine? I get up at 5:30am and cook both breakfast and lunch for my family. My husband goes to work and takes the children to their classes. I leave for work at 8:30am to start at 9:30am. I stitch around eight to ten easy pieces or two to three difficult ones a day. I have my lunch break at 1pm and I go home at 6pm. My children prepare tea for me and after a bit of relaxation I prepare dinner for my family. I go to sleep by 11pm.
