WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Basic Suture (Limit 20) This workshop will include a didactic portion and a hands-on portion. Didactic Goals: At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to: • Define the critical wound healing period. Identify which wounds require primary, secondary, and tertiary intention • Match tissue types to appropriate suture characteristics. Identify sutures by filament type and absorbability. Discuss which sutures require a drain. • List the systemic, localized and surgical/mechanical factors that can affect wound healing; and assess a wound for optimal suture selection. Will be familiar with suture classification, and suture selection. Hands-On Goals: Will gain practice and experience with one hand ties, two hand ties and instrument ties. Will gain confidence holding equipment properly and naming instruments. Will learn basic skills to close wounds effectively.

Advanced Suture (Limit 20) This workshop will include a didactic portion and a hands-on portion. Participants must have basic surgical skills (must be able to demonstrate instrument ties and two-hand ties prior to signing up for the workshop. • Traumatic and elective suture closure techniques, suture classification, and suture selection. Select sutures based on relevant clinical criteria and match the suture needle to the wound and suture Hands-On Goals: Will gain experience suturing with different types of materials and in different simulated skin/body cavities. Will be comfortable with onehand ties, two-hand ties, instrument ties, in deep and superficial settings. Will learn advanced suturing techniques for working in different areas of the body

Plastics Closure (Limit 20) At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to: • Describe the basic pathophysiology of wound healing, the importance of wound closure materials and effects on wound healing and inflammation • Techniques on minimizing inflammation and ensuring best possible cosmetic outcomes This year, PAs will begin to transition to a new certification maintenance process. As part of this new process, PAs must earn 20 Category 1 credits of PI-CME and/or self-assessment CME every two years. Acceptable activities are certified for AAPA Category 1 PI-CME credit or AAPA Category 1 Self-assessment CME credit. In an effort to help our attendees meet these requirements, AASPA is presenting two 4-hour workshops on SA and PI as follows.

Trauma (Limited 25) At the end of the session participant should be able to discuss: • Reasoning behind the trauma survey Airway management in trauma • Basics of the FAST exam * Team based approach to trauma scenarios

Specialty Self Assessment CME: Intense, interactive, scenario-based lectures in 3 specialty areas to satisfy 4 SA CME credit hours. Your instructors will guide you through several case scenarios in Pediatric surgery, Gynecology and Trauma with emphasis on differential diagnoses and critical thinking in the care of these specialty populations. -Pediatrics (Bob Sammartano) -Gyn (Dr. Nathalie Johnson) -Trauma (Col. Matthew Martin) Critical Care Self Assessment CME: Our critical care gurus will work with you through case based presentations based on latest in critical care guidelines. These sessions are intense and interactive via an audience response system. You will not only know the right answers to audience posited questions, but understand why the other responses aren’t the best answer. -Sepsis -Hemodynamic monitoring -Acute Coronary Syndrome

The 14TH Annual

AASPA CME MEETING & Surgical Update WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Baxter BioSurgery Hemostats and Sealants Hands-on Training Lab Over view of Hemostats and Sealants: Didactic and Hands-on Hemostasis Lab with the Baxter hemostatic and sealant agents- Sponsored by Baxter BioSurgery Medical Affairs (limited to 24 attendees) Didactic Goals: At the conclusion of this session (a fair-balanced presentation, with subsequent Q & As), the participants will be able to: Define the differences between a hemostat and sealant and where they work within the coagulation cascade; Describe the bleeding scenarios that are suited to each category of product; understand the indications, components, Mechanism of Action, and safety related to the Baxter BioSurgery products represented. Hemostasis lab Goals: At the conclusion of the hemostasis lab, participants will have a clear understanding of the properties of the Baxter hemostatic and sealant agents, and how they are used in a variety of surgical scenarios Learning Objectives: Describe the differences between hemostatic agents and sealants, and where they work within the coagulation cascade. Determine best product to use to increase efficacy based upon severity and type of bleeding. Demonstrate proper application technique for product utilization to achieve greatest safety and efficacy. Vascular Access (Limited 25) Learning Objectives: -Identify key anatomic landmarks for placement of femoral, internal jugular, and subclavian vein central venous lines -Perform appropriate sterile technique and the Seldinger method of line placement -Explain the indications and contraindications for placement of central venous access -Describe the complications of central venous placement for each of the 3 discussed anatomic sites -Discuss post line placement management and follow-up based on anatomic site Ultrasound (Limited 8 per session, 2 sessions) The basic course (for up to 8 participants with little or no experience in performing ultrasound) aims at teaching the Extended FAST (Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) exam and the Cardiac exam. This course is all hands-on! We will begin by breaking into small groups and the instructor will perform a live demonstration on a model. You will then get a chance to practice scanning on a live model right away. We are keeping the number of participants small so there is a very favorable instructor/student ratio which will enhance your ability to practice and learn. You will become familiar with the ultrasound equipment, how to make adjustments to the equipment for enhanced imaging, and how to perform both the E-FAST exam and the Cardiac exam. You will need to complete a series of learning tasks (to be supervised and signed off by the instructor) in order to satisfactorily complete the course. What you will learn about the Ultrasound Equipment: 1. Learn how to safely connect and remove probes from their ports. 2. Learn how to switch between transducers. 3. Learn and demonstrate how to store and review images. 4. Demonstrate adjustments to controls ie; gain, depth, frequency in hands- on session. 5. Demonstrate how to properly document an ultrasound study by adding pt. information, and proper landmarks. What you will learn during the Extended FAST Examination: 1. How to perform an extended FAST examination. 2. Understand the sonographic landmarks and anatomical relationships of the Heart, Liver, Spleen and Bladder as they relate to the FAST examination. 3. Demonstrate the ability to identify and visualize the areas of potential intra-abdominal and thoracic spaces for free fluid to collect in on the FAST examination. 4. Understand the sonographic findings and pitfalls for identifying life threatening, trauma conditions such as cardiac tamponade, hemo/pneumothorax and intra-abdominal hemorrhage. What you will learn during the Cardiac Examination: 1. Demonstrate the surface landmarks and transducer position necessary to perform a bedside echocardiogram. 2. Acquire and interpret sonographic images of heart (subcostal, parasternal long, parasternal short and apical windows). 3. Learn how to identify pathologic conditions such as pericardial effusion, gross wall motion abnormalities and cardiac tamponade.
