2020 ANNUAL

BUSINESS MEETING

The American Institute of Architects 1735 New York Ave NW Washington, DC 20006-5292

AIA College of Fellows Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.

Thank You Ordinarily, this page in the annual report begins with the word “WELCOME.” As traditionally done, I would be welcoming you all together as the 58th Chancellor of the College of Fellows. Had this been an ordinary year, we would have gathered in fellowship for the Annual Business Meeting in Los Angeles. This annual report would have graced your luncheon table at the elegant Millennium Biltmore, rather than an online supplement to a Zoom call. However, as we all know, there is nothing ordinary about this year. Instead we all now live and work in an impersonal digital workspace. No one, least of all this year’s class of New Fellows, will forget the year 2020. And yet leadership at the College and the Institute, and all of our members, have adapted and moved forward. For that we thank you! We began 2020 with a renewed commitment from the College to support the AIA Climate Initiative, and to adjust our programs to focus on climate change. By the second quarter, the pandemic had taken hold, and both the health and economic impact began to affect us all in the architecture profession and society at large. As the year progressed, we became evermore aware of the racial, gender, and economic inequities built into our world. Today we continue to struggle to get a handle on the issues surrounding climate, health, economic equity, and inclusion. We are committed to address them together, as a single related public health crisis which must be dealt with now. The College continues to serve. The Executive Committee meets online more often than ever. We support research, emerging professionals, and the College. In spite of lost income from canceled events, we continue promote the Latrobe Prize, award the Emerging Professionals Component Grants, sponsor the Leadership Institute, provide stipends for the Young Architects awards, and collaborate with the Young Architects Forum. Communication in these times has proved more important than ever. We have relied on the excellent Newsletter to highlight our 2020 New Fellows, denied an Investiture this year, and to help you get to know your Regional Representatives. The discussion thread on the COF KnowledgeNet has proven a forum for support for the Black Lives Matter movement, minority scholarships, and the Architects Foundation. More members are beginning to post on the College website. We must maintain this communication. Becoming a Fellow is a significant recognition of your contribution to the profession, to our Institute, and to our global community. Fellowship, however, is just the beginning. You were awarded this distinction because of your passion for doing more. As we advocate for practice-based research and the support for future professionals, we also ask that you financially support the College. Nothing this year would’ve been possible without the professionalism and adaptability of an incredible 2020 Executive Committee. Vice Chancellor John Castellana, FAIA, Bursar Roger Schluntz, FAIA and Secretary Frances Halsband, FAIA, and our Executive Director, Terri Stewart, Hon. AIA, and her Executive Assistant Muza Conforti, have been indispensable this strange and challenging year. This team shapes the College leadership for several years to come and have proven determination to fulfill the mission and vision of the AIA College of Fellows. For all of you, again, thank you. Sincerely,

Peter Kuttner, FAIA

2019 Bursar’s Report

The College Finances The primary financial assets of the COF are held in investment accounts owned by the AIA College of Fellows Fund, Inc., a nonprofit 501 c(3) organization incorporated in the District of Columbia. It is through the AIA COF Fund, Inc. that the COF is able to receive contributions that are typically tax-deductible to the donor. The COF Fund is a separate, legal entity independent of the AIA as well as the AIA COF organization. Notwithstanding, other than the addition of fiduciary responsibilities, the officers of the COF Fund, Inc. serve in similar capacities as the COF elected officers. As with the COF, the AIA staff provides administrative and bookkeeping support for the separate COF Fund entity. Meetings of the COF Fund, Inc. are conducted separately by its officers, but usually at a time a regular meeting of the COF is convened. Engaged by the AIA COF Fund officers, an external investment fund manager, Dimeo Schneider & Associates, serves as the financial adviser for the COF Fund. Conservative investment strategies are carefully managed in the allocation of the COF assets and, in so far as possible, reflect current financial environments. The AIA COF Executive Committee, also serving as the Board of Directors of the AIA COF Fund, Inc., conducts quarterly meetings with Dimeo Schneider & Associates to carefully monitor the Fund’s performance. The fund manager provides periodical reports and updates at the formal meetings of the AIA COF Fund, Inc. The AIA COF Fund, Inc. is required to file an annual Federal tax return on IRS Form 990. The on-going operations of the AIA COF organization are included and reported with the annual IRS Form 990 submitted by the AIA.

The College of Fellows Fund The College of Fellows Fund is the chief source of revenue through which the College fulfills its mission. In turn, the fund, through the COF Latrobe Prize, creates useful resources for AIA and the profession. The COF Executive Committee has established a policy directing all contributions to the College of Fellows Fund go directly into the Research Fund for endowment. The annual proceeds of the investments provide funding for the Latrobe Fellowship, Emerging Professional Component grants, future publications, and related expenses. Income from the College’s programs and activities is intended to be the primary funding source for operations.
