Founded in 1952, the College of Fellows is composed of members of the Institute who are elevated to Fellowship by a jury of their peers. Fellowship is one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievement of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those architects who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society.
On behalf of the AIA College of Fellows Executive Committee (and myself!), I congratulate you on your new position as a College of Fellows Regional Representative and welcome you to the leadership of the College. You’ve accepted a wonderful opportunity to be a part of our leadership, and to represent all of the Fellows in your region. We are so excited that you will be joining us to advocate for the needs and interests of our members and for the emerging professionals we mentor.
You will fill this Regional Representative (RR) position for three (3) calendar years. There is an “RR Roster” we maintain in order to have a clear understanding of not only your contact information, but also your terms of office. Many former Representatives have found that it takes a few months to get up to speed on the RR program and what has been done in our regions to date. That is why this packet was developed. It probably won’t answer all of your questions, but it should provide you with a more comprehensive understanding of the College, including its missions, objectives, and messaging.
Your role as a conduit between the COF Executive Committee (ExCom), and your region is vital to our shared success. By providing opportunities and information to our constituents, you advance our mission and our profession. Further, your position allows the COF to collect information on successful programs in your region that can be shared with others, provides for continuous contact with regional leadership, and assists the COF in publicizing the actions of our leadership around the world. Your active participation in our meetings, communications, and events is critical to our success, and for that we thank you in advance.
Perhaps the most important rule of thumb when serving as a Regional Representative is to speak up. You are representing a significant portion of the COF membership, and your ideas and opinions matter. If you have any questions about the COF or your position, or if you find you have difficulty in performing your duties, please contact me at any time. I am so looking forward to working with you in the coming years, and to getting to know you personally as well!
Sincerely,
Stuart Pettitt, FAIA
2023-2025 National Chair of the Regional Representatives of the AIA College of Fellows
“THE PURPOSE OF THE COLLEGE OF FELLOWS IS TO STIMULATE A SHARING OF INTERESTS
AMONG FELLOWS, PROMOTE THE PURPOSES OF THE INSTITUTE, ADVANCE THE PROFESSION OF ARCHITECTURE, MENTOR
As a Regional Representative to the COF, you will serve as a liaison between the AIA Fellows within your Region and the AIA College of Fellows. Your position is a great opportunity to serve as part of the College’s leadership and connect your region and with other regions across the country.

• As leading architects, we don’t just have the opportunity to change the horizon. We have the chance to change the way people live.
• We have the tools to contribute to society in profound ways, and we are committed to improving every day life.
• As Fellows we are recognized as leaders:
◦ Those who seize the opportunity to be mentors to the next generation.
◦ Those who elevate the profession through our vision.
◦ Those who represent the values, support the development, and encourage the sustainability of the practice of architecture.
• We are the doers.
• We are the difference.
• We are the AIA College of Fellows.
• Fellowship is about bettering the profession through giving back.
• Creating this as a strong value will speak to each audience: representing who they are and who they want to become in the future.
