A Message of Celebration
Chancellor Peter G. Kuttner, FAIA
Congratulations to the 2020 New Fellows and welcome to your friends and families! Through the pandemic and the last two years of coping with a new world, we have had to postpone two Investitures to celebrate your outstanding accomplishment - but, finally THE DAY has arrived to start this Celebration!
We also want to welcome you all to this spectacular setting in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, designed by AIA Gold Medal recipient Edward Durell Stone, FAIA. The Center opened in 1971, and in 2019 was expanded by another Gold Medal awardee Steven Holl, FAIA.
Celebrating President John F. Kennedy’s legacy, the Center presents theater, contemporary dance, ballet, vocal music, chamber music, Hip Hop, comedy, international arts, and jazz.
This particular space we are in today in the home of the Washington National Opera - the site for the prestigious annual Kennedy Center Honors. Our profession of architecture is a proud part of this national arts community.
Today, you have already received your Fellows medal, and will be congratulated by Jane and Peter. You will then be welcomed into the College
As you are elevated to the College of Fellows, you join approximately 3,300 other outstanding architects from around the world.”

by me along with the College’s 2020 Executive Committee. To allay health concerns, we will not be shaking hands. As you leave the stage you will receive your copy of the College of Fellows Directory and its History. It now includes this distinguished Class of both 2020 and 2021 Fellows.
We are delighted to finally have the opportunity to formally recognize your contributions to architecture. I can’t help but recall my own Investiture in Philadelphia many years ago, and realize it was just the beginning of many new friendships and future collaborations. Together you are a unique and important band of professionals, extending the scope and
impact of architecture today and tomorrow.
As you are elevated to the College of Fellows you join approximately 3300 other outstanding architects from around the world – you have all achieved great accomplishments in your storied careers. We look forward to your continuation of excellence as you move on to the next chapter!
We again congratulate all of your outstanding accomplishments and we look forward to having you continue your excellence on behalf of our profession and now as a valued member of our College. As you leave DC and arrive safely at home, please start thinking about the journey
ahead and how you can enhance your career by mentoring our next generation of young architects, supporting our research efforts and helping to sustain the College so that our legacy continues well into the future!
Friends, Families and Colleagues please join us in CONGRATULATING the 2020 Class of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects!
We look forward to seeing you this evening at AIA at 9pm AIA to further celebrate your honor!
Until then….let’s start the CELEBRATION!!!

2020
A WELCOME OF FRIENDSHIP
The 58th AIA College of Fellows Chancellor Peter G. Kuttner, FAIA passes the baton to John J. Castellana, FAIA.
Good evening! On behalf of my friends and colleagues, it is my great pleasure to welcome you, our distinguished guests and members, to the first ever inauguration of the 59th Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows.
I think we all agree, this has been a very different year for the College of Fellows. A year ago, in December 2019 we all gathered in Washington for a very different inaugural, when Chancellor Ed Vance and AIA President Bill Bates presented me with the medal I wear tonight. While the pandemic has changed the way we live and work, and made so much of our existence online and virtual, it is important that we celebrate the traditions and ceremonies that have tied us together over the years. Inauguration is no exception.
I’m delighted many of the present and past leaders of the American Institute of Architects, the College of Fellows, and a number of AIA senior staff members are here to witness and be a part of tonight’s celebration. However, tonight we will not be asking you to stand, since we are all very aware you are all only dressed formally from the waist up.
Since we cannot see you stand, please wave at your camera as we recognize you joining us tonight:
• AIA 2019 President Jane Frederick, FAIA and her husband Michael …and ,
• AIA First Vice President, Peter Exley, FAIA and his wife Sharon.
Thank you for joining and now we have the group of:
• The College of Fellows Former Chancellors – you too can all please wave.
And we have a group of:
• Former AIA Presidents - would you all please wave. We are joined tonight by representatives from our national staff. Please join me in welcoming the EVP/CEO of The American Institute of Architects, Robert Ivy, FAIA, and his wife, Holly. Also, the AIA’s Chief of Staff together with Muza Conforti, and College of Fellows Executive Director, Terri Stewart, Hon. AIA.
And now it’s my great pleasure to acknowledge the current AIA College of Fellows Executive Committee. If each of you will hold down your space bar to unmute yourself as I say your name, and say hello to everyone, hopefully your space will fill the screen.
• Vice Chancellor, John Castellana, FAIA and his wife, Barbara,
• Bursar, Roger Schultz, FAIA
• Secretary, Frances Halsband, FAIA
• and the newest member of the ExCom, our 2020 Bursar Ron Blitch, FAIA.
Please give them a round of applause.
Ordinarily this would be the time to now join in the fellowship of friends as together we break bread. While we recognize the inauguration provides an opportunity to consider the year past, and to celebrate the coming year, it’s also a time to see old friends and meet new ones.
To re-create that sense of cocktail conversation and dinner table small talk we know so well, we plan to break everyone into small groups of 8 to 10 people for the next 5 minutes. Some of your virtual table mates will be old friends and some you will meet tonight. Our program will resume after the table talk.
“Enjoy getting to know your assigned table mates!”
As tradition dictates, We will start with an invocation from our senior most senior Former Chancellor BILL ROSE, FAIA.
I hope your bit of table talk was rewarding, and you got a chance to catch up. This evening will be the 59th time the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows has inaugurated a new Chancellor. It was an absolute honor and privilege to serve as this year’s Chancellor, and I’m optimistic that by this time next year, John will be able to report on a very different year and a very different series of events while still maintaining the College’s Fund that is entrusted to each of us to preserve and grow.
A major impact of the pandemic this year meant that the executive committee did not travel, And of course, as Robert and Jane noted, we all missed the A’20 Conference, the AIA Business meeting, the Party with the Fellows, Investiture, Convocation Dinner, and our golf tournament in Los Angeles. Meeting with each other in person, visiting different components, and networking with Fellows across the country has always been a key part of our terms on the executive committee. Like everyone, our meetings turned to Zoom. Nonetheless, this dedicated executive committee made the best of it. Instead of tourist free day work sessions, we spread the meetings out over time, and we were able to coordinate issues with the calendars of the Strategic Council and the AIA Board. Our spring
meeting became five 2 to 3 hour sessions over a month and a half, as the impact of the pandemic made itself known. What we lost in the camaraderie of travel, we made up for with a renewed focus on the issues at hand. With several sources of income gone, we became more cost-effective, but the many programs near and dear to our missions continued. We juried and awarded 20 young architect award recipients this year, providing each with a $500 cash prize. We awarded another $40,000 in grants to local Components across the country for programs promoting Emerging Professional initiatives, serving one of our prime goals mentoring young architects.
With less personal contact, we returned to the College of Fellows Newsletter as the best way to maintain communications, and we turned the focus onto the membership. Our May issue put our 116 New Fellows on the cover, with a brief profile on each, to make up for the hopefully temporary loss of the Investiture and Convocation experience. In September we turned the spotlight on to our Regional Representatives, who form our most immediate link to the Fellows across the country, and put them all on the cover. Along with Jeanne Jackson, our new Chair of the Regional Representative Council, this team continues to evolve as our boots on the ground. Finally, our December issue will focus on the College’s first online Business Meeting we held in the end of October. Although online lacks the immediacy of the in-person meeting we traditionally hold, and like tonight lacks the meal, the silver lining was that more than 250 people attending.
These are only the highlights of the work the College has accomplished this year, accomplishments in research, mentorship and outreach that have only strengthened and contributed to the foundation of the College’s legacy built by those who have
come before. I must offer my most sincere thanks to four of the finest mentors I could have ever hoped for. Shadowing for John Sorrenti, and then serving under Lenore Lucey, Skipper Post, and Ed Vance - Chancellors 54 through 57, It has been an honor. You have each been more than extraordinary leaders of the College and the Institute, you have become my closest friends and I will never cease to cherish that. THANK YOU.
And now I want to recognize the outstanding team I had the privilege to serve with, starting with our Distinguished Secretary Frances Halsband, FAIA. Frances is the founding principal, with Robert Kliment, of the well-known firm Kliment Halsband Architects in New York City, widely recognized for preservation, adaptive reuse and master planning. Her firm received the AIA Firm Award in 1997 and the New York AIA Medal of Honor in 1988. As Secretary, she has been passionate about our Emerging Professionals and the Young Architects Forum, promoting our programs to recognize, celebrate, and mentor new architects. Frances, thank you so much for everything you do for the College and our next generation.
Now our Distinguished Bursar, Mr. Roger Schluntz, FAIA. Roger is a Professor in the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of New Mexico, and served as Dean from 1999 through 2011. Prior to that, he was Dean of Architecture at the University of Miami, and was Director of Architecture at Arizona State University. Beyond his academic roles, Roger served as Executive Director of ACSA from 1977-1980, and is a former secretary of NAAB. At times Roger seems to be everywhere, and knows everyone. On the College Executive Committee Roger borders on the extreme with his
commitment to building our endowment, through a wide range of new structures for donating to the College Fund. He will approach you all in the next two years. Roger, you’re a remarkable Bursar, and we look forward to great things from you in the coming years.
And now to the man who will succeed me tonight. Mr. John J. Castellana, FAIA. I first met John three short years ago when he joined the College of Fellows Executive Committee, and now I consider him a friend for life and an admired architect. John currently serves as Chairman of TMP Architecture, Inc. a Michigan-based Architecture and Interior Design firm with offices in Bloomfield Hills and Portage, Michigan. For over 45 years John has been recognized nationally for his passion and expertise on planning and design for innovative educational facilities. It is clear to all that he is committed to learning in every aspect. As he has said, “his work is all about the kids.”
John is also a dedicated alum of Kent State University, where he received his Bachelor of Architecture, and he received his Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois. For his work in design for education John was honored as a member of our College of Fellows in 1988 at the early age of 39, one of the youngest Fellows in the nation, true still to this day, 27 years later, John returned the favor by serving in the rugged job as the Chair of the 2015 Jury of Fellows. John has been recognized by the AIA for his exceptional commitment to educational design, receiving the Detroit Chapter AIA Gold Medal and the AIA Michigan Gold Medal.
When John first joined the Executive Committee, Chancellor Skipper Post quickly named him
the most organized man ever! It’s true! John has streamlined our process, our juries, and our meetings. He has jumped in on our by-laws and our standard operating procedures. But more importantly, John listens to everyone, and is driven to find common ground.
To me, his friendship means even more, as we confer over College activities. I must admit, there are times when I am not sure whether I’m dismayed or delighted that most people can’t tell us apart, as is obvious when you see us coming and going. It has made for a great team. As is obvious from his career and his contributions, John has made the traditions and the mission the College of Fellows his own.
At the same time, he has a special ability to have and celebrate fun as he has said “his work is all about the kids.” And of course, he brings his wife Barbara into our family. Once the virus is behind us, and we can meet in person, more of you will get to know them even better as an exciting couple. The College could NOT be in better hands.
And now we are ready to celebrate the momentous occasion that we’ve all come to witness tonight— the Inauguration of the 59th Chancellor of The American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.
At this time, I would like to invite the Former AIA College of Fellows Chancellors who are here tonight to once again join me as your digital spirit. As I call your names, in the order of your service to the Institute, please congratulate John very quickly. I know this will be a challenge, but I ask that you try to hold your applause until every Former
Chancellor has come forward:
1990 Chancellor William Rose, Jr., FAIA
1998 Chancellor Harold L. Adams, FAIA
2002 Chancellor C. James Lawler, FAIA
2004 Chancellor Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA
2009 Chancellor Donald Hackl, FAIA
2010 Chancellor Edward J. Kodet, FAIA
2013 Chancellor Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA
2014 Chancellor William J. Stanley, III, FAIA
2015 Chancellor Albert W. Rubeling, Jr., FAIA
2016 Chancellor John R. Sorrenti, FAIA
2017 Chancellor Lenore M. Lucey, FAIA
2018 Chancellor Raymond “Skipper” Post, FAIA
2019 Chancellor Edward A. Vance, FAIA
So tonight, we honor the legacy of these Former Chancellors and all the Former Chancellors who have helped establish and lead a robust community of professionals who represent a 21st century College of Fellows.
Please join me in giving a warm welcome to one of our most passionate advocates, Mr. John Castellana, FAIA. President Frederick, ordinarily you would accompany John up to the front. Tonight we know you’ve got his back!
John, this occasion is rich in ceremony, protocols and long-standing traditions. It is equally represented by one single -- yet powerful --statement. It’s a statement that belies the tremendous responsibility as well as the honor of serving as Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows.
“With this medal, we invest the 59th Chancellor of the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, Mr. John Castellana, FAIA.”
We are all confident you will be an inspired and effective leader.
ACCEPTANCE WITH A COMMITMENT
Chancellor John Castellana, FAIA
Thank you Peter, Robert, Jane and Bill. Jane will soon be formally recognizing her successor. Allow me to be first to congratulate you on your advancement to AIA President and I look forward to our year together!
I want to take this opportunity to personally welcome all of you to what is a very special occasion for me. I am EXTREMELY humbled and honored to be inaugurated as the 59th Chancellor of our esteemed College of Fellows!
Thank you to the 58 Former Chancellors for paving a wonderful legacy! I will certainly do my best to continue the RICH TRADITIONS of our College in our pursuit of MENTORING our young professionals, promoting RESEARCH, and helping to SUSTAIN the College to allow our programs and commitment to EXCELLENCE to flourish!
I want to especially mention Bill Jarrat, FAIA, and the last Chancellor from Michigan in 1982 – 38 years ago…..I had the pleasure of knowing Bill through my early years and am sure that he is looking down today and is very proud that another Fellow from Michigan will serve as Chancellor!
And also joining us this evening are a large contingent of AIA Michigan Fellows led by our current Regional Director, Stu Pettitt -thanks to the group for being part of this special event along with AIA Michigan Executive Director Cathy Mosley and Operations Director, Evelyn Dougherty.
Before I go further, I want to introduce some very special family members who are here to help celebrate, they are
2021
John J. Castellana, FAIA - 2021 Chancellor
certainly my most cherished support group!
My brother Bob Castellana and his wife Ellen from Delaware. My daughter Cathi Barry and her husband Louis are Social Workers in Dexter, Michigan and met when both were in the Marching Band at UM. My daughter Christina Castellana and her husband Francisco Duran, living 15 minutes from us with our twin 7 yr old grandsons, Jose Luis and Juan Carlos. Today, she runs a very successful Immigration Law practice with Francisco (Paco) as their IT Director. And my biggest supporter since we met at Kent State University in the spring of 1967, my wife of 48 years, Barbara!
She has been by my side always with love and encouragement – HONEY, thank you for the greatest 48 years – I love you dearly!
Now…back to my journey. Upon graduation from Kent in 1971 and then on to University of Illinois for my Master’s degree, I joined my current firm, TMP ARCHITECTURE which started my 48 year career. A great deal of thanks goes to my mentors at TMP for their guidance and encouragement to allow me to advance my design skills and professional activities outside of the office.
Joining us today are our current TMP Managing Partners Gail Allevato (our President), Dave Larson, Eduardo Blanc, Steve Smith and Tim Casai.
I got licensed in 1974 and immediately joined the AIA and ultimately became very involved with AIA Detroit – first as Honor and Awards Chair and eventually was elected to the Board and served as President. Peter Tarapata, FAIA (the “T” in TMP) was a former chair of the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education and because I was actively involved with school design, he encouraged me to become an active participant in that Committee.
I was appointed to the Steering Committee of CAE and served as Chair in 1987 and then moved on to represent the AIA on the UIA Working Group for Educational and Cultural Facilities. Maury Allen, FAIA and Glen Paulsen, FAIA – former partners at TMP and past associates in the Eero Saarinen office, strongly suggested that I apply for Fellowship – my initial reaction was at the age of 39, am I too young to even be considered?
With their continued encouragement, I was nominated, submitted my portfolio and was honored with selection to the COF in 1988 – WOW! The investiture that year was at St. John the Divine in NYC and in my class was Carole Olshavsky, FAIA a classmate from Kent and a former Chancellor! Little did either of us know what was on the horizon with COF!
Also joining me from Michigan were Bob Ziegelman and Tom Lucas, both past associates in the Saarinen office. The Chancellor in 1988 was Bill Brubaker, internationally acclaimed school design architect from Perkins and Will and Ted Pappas was the AIA President that year. A special side note: I grew up in New Jersey and my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1987.
With the Investiture in NYC, he was able to attend with my Mom thanks to my Aunt who arranged for a limo to the city from their home in NJ with Barbara and my daughter Chrissy. It took my Dad’s total energy to climb the majestic steps at St John’s and they arrived inside the church just as they announced my name! So special to share that day – if the Investiture was not in NYC, my Dad would not have been able to attend – as he passed away a few months later and always cherished that moment
I thank Maury and Glen and all who supported my Fellowship – A DOOR OPENED VERY WIDE THAT DAY!
After this, I wanted to be more active with COF after being selected to the AIA Honors and Awards Jury (thank you Gene Hopkins for helping to make that a reality) and getting to know Kathy Daileda, who is also with us this evening, I knew I wanted to do more with COF.
Being selected in 2013 to be a member of the COF Jury, was my next adventure - what a tremendous opportunity and I was so excited to view the excellent work that our future Fellows were accomplishing all over the USA and abroad. Linda Searl was our chair in 2013, followed by Craig Rafferty…and then I was selected to be Chair in 2015.
The Investiture in 2015 was held in Atlanta at Bill Stanley’s beautifully designed Horizon Sanctuary at the Ebenezer Baptist Church that had strong ties to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – so appropriate today as we are finally talking about social injustice…and doing something positive to help rectify the past. The Chancellor that year was Al Rubeling and as Chair, I had the opportunity to really get to know Al and his wife Dee…the ceremony was a big hit and am sure that you all remember the finale with “OH HAPPY DAY”.
During this year as Chair, I was ready for the next COF opportunity and decided to apply for a position on the Executive Committee. I applied twice but did not give up and the third time was the charm when I received a phone call from Lenore Lucey on a Saturday afternoon informing me that I was the recommended person to be presented to the COF membership at the next Conference…..she asked if I was still interested and I shouted YES!!!
Thanks go to Carole Olshavsky, Gene Hopkins and RK Stewart for writing and re-writing reference letters in support of my selection to the ExCom for three years!
Lenore, our 55th Chancellor, thank you for your confidence in me to join the ExCom. Your leadership during my first “shadow” time was much appreciated and thank you for your warm welcome to Barbara and me. Skipper, the 56th Chancellor served at the “helm” when I officially became Secretary of the ExCom…..WOW! Although I knew who he was, having the opportunity to serve with him was so special and getting to know his charming wife Bryan was extra special. Through this time together, we are now lifelong friends!
Ed Vance, the 57th Chancellor served during my second year on the ExCom……another WOW! Ed helped me with my Secretarial dutie and everyone knows his commitment to the COF and AIA, but it is the genuine friendship of he and his beautiful wife Ruby, that Barbara and I will always cherish! I asked Ed to help lead the Former Chancellors in a similar role that Skipper performs with the Former Presidents – and he graciously accepted!
Peter, our 58th Chancellor appropriately referred to me as his twin - same glasses and perfect hair style! Peter and his lovely wife Elaine have become our very close friends and although our last face to face meeting was last December at Peter’s Inauguration, through his leadership we have virtually carried on the business of the COF without missing a beat. I have asked Peter to assist us in 2021 to help all of our graphic communications and he also graciously accepted!
So now, as your 59th Chancellor, I have some very big shoes to fill, together with our Executive Committee – Roger, Frances, and our newest member, Ron Blitch, FAIA from New Orleans.
We are looking forward to a great year, full of good health as we continue the journey of the COF! And supporting us through this journey are two key AIA staff members…our Exec Director, Terri Stewart and Executive Assistant Muza Con-
forti, Thank you both for your guidance and continued support! The journey does not stop here. I call on all Fellows to encourage the youth at your firms to get involved with AIA early in their career and ultimately apply for Fellowship. We are on a mission to bring more youth to our College.
We need the passion and energy of our young members in COF as we move forward to reinforce the joint initiatives of the AIA and COF to celebrate what architecture can do to improve racial injustice and promote a greener and more sustainable built environment.
Thank you and I look forward to working together with all 3300+ Fellows in partnership with AIA President Peter Exley to make our DREAMS and ASPIRATIONS a REALITY!
One final note….we are all hopeful that 2021 will allow us the opportunity to celebrate in June at A’21 in Philadelphia where we are planning on having two Investiture Ceremonies – one honoring the 2020 New Fellows and one honoring the 2021 New Fellows – this will be followed by a grand Convocation Dinner hosted by Peter Kuttner and myself
These events along with other COF activities have already been planned….so I extend a warm invitation to all of you to attend…..we need to look forward to our normal life and A’21 will be a perfect time to CELEBRATE in person!
“We need the passion and energy of our young members in COF as we move forward to reinforce the joint initiatives of the AIA and COF to celebrate what architecture can do to improve racial injustice and promote a greener and more sustainable built environment.”

A Message of Imagination
Chancellor John Castellana, FAIA
As the doors opened today you heard some wonderful music that was specifically chosen to highlight this special day:
Starting with IMAGINE
Imagine where you will be in the future as you continue to progress your skills, leadership and the mentoring of our next generation of future leaders of our profession…..
Followed by SAIL AWAY
Symbolic of continuing your journey of excellence and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to cherish…..
Next……THE HAPPENING
Yes….it finally is happening today – the longawaited journey to your Investiture!
FEELING GROOVY
“Slow down you move too fast….” The first words of this song – relish the entire day and enjoy every moment of this afternoon followed by the reception this evening
And finally, ONE SHINING MOMENT
As the Former Chancellors and Former Presidents arrived, we are all reminded that this is indeed a Shining Moment in your career!
I know that all of you will look back and remember this day as an absolute highlight of your career.”
“
It is now my pleasure to introduce the 95th President of The American Institute of Architects, L. Jane Frederick, FAIA and the 96th President of The American Institute of Architects, Peter J. Exley.
I know that all of you will look back and remember this day as an absolute highlight of your career. I remember my day in New York at St. John the Divine, surrounded by family and friends. It was a very special and humbling experience. What made it even more special was that my Mom and Dad who lived in New Jersey were able to attend the ceremony only because it was in New York City. My Dad was terminally ill and it took every bit of energy
for him to navigate the majestic steps at the Cathedral. They arrived just as my name was being called. A wonderful lasting memory for us all.
Elevation to Fellowship recognizes you as a true leader of our wonderful profession. But it does not stop here. Continue to move forward and take an active part in support the missions of your College: Mentoring of Young Architects and Emerging Professionals. Our focus on Research, mainly through our more than twenty years of support to the Latrobe Prize, provides relevant information and practical application of ideas and data to enhance our entire profession. And of course our mission
to Sustain the College through your financial support to allow programs to be expanded and enhanced.
As I mentioned in my final Chancellors Message in our recent Newsletter, it has been an absolute honor to serve as your 59th Chancellor and delighted that this Investiture will culminate my year. I too will remember and cherish this day!
So without further words from us, I would like to turn to Paul Mankins, FAIA and Nancy Rogo Trainer, FAIA our esteemed jury chairs to start the Ceremony! CONGRATULATIONS to each and every one of you!

PRESERVING THE LEGACY AND ADVANCING NEW TRADITIONS
John J. Castellana was inaugurated as the 59th Chancellor of the College of Fellows on 9 December 2020. The continuing pandemic led to the ceremony being conducted on the web, marking the first time in the College’s history a chancellor’s inauguration was virtual rather than in-person during Governance Week. Despite this, College staff and Executive Committee members choreographed a beautiful ceremony with Fellows and guests taking part from across the country. The Executive Committee joined in the ceremony including Roger Schluntz, Vice Chancellor; Frances Halsband, Secretary; and the Executive Committee’s newest member, Ronald Blitch, Bursar.
Investiture attendees also met the AIA’s incoming President Peter Exley, current President Jane Frederick, and retiring Chief Executive Robert Ivy. Peter Kuttner, the College’s 58th chancellor, led the proceedings. Castellana, who became a Fellow in 1988 at the age of 39, was humbled to be the current Chancellor as it had been over 38 years since a Michigander held this position. With family surrounding him, the Investiture began a year focused on continuing traditions of the past, interjected with new initiatives. Castellana, in his inaugural speech, established several initiatives for the coming year:
• Advance youth and diversity in the College by advocating for all Fellows to encourage young architects to get involved in the AIA early in their careers and ultimately pursue Fellowship.
• Reinforce AIA and COF joint initiatives to celebrate architecture’s role in erasing racial injustice and promoting a greener and more sustainable built environment.
• Strengthen the core missions of the College.
• Mentor Emerging Professionals and Young Architects and continue support for awards and grants.
• Continue to promote research grounded in practical applications for the profession via the biennial Latrobe Prize, which is leading to significant advances in architecture. Now in its 20th year, the Latrobe has awarded over $1,000,000 to fund critical research.
• Sustain the College and its award and grant programs by promoting increased contributions by members.
Traditional face-to-face Executive Committee meetings again shifted to virtual, as initiated by Chancellor Kuttner in 2019 because of the pandemic. However, the business of the College continued seamlessly throughout the year as the Executive Committee met monthly via Zoom with full agendas focusing on the year’s initiatives and honoring the newest Fellows. With A’20 in Los Angeles canceled, many hoped A’21 in Philadelphia would host a joint Investiture to honor Fellows elevated in 2020 and 2021.
Planning for A’21 in Philadelphia began in October 2019, but the continuing pandemic resulted in its cancelation. Castellana, the
Executive Committee, and College staff immediately began brainstorming ideas for an in-person joint Investiture Ceremony. Castellana and Kuttner focused on properly celebrating the accomplishments of the newest members of the College. Surveys were sent to all new Fellows. Over 90% favored having an inperson Investiture ceremony. Thus, the College planned to host a joint Investiture during Governance Week, December 2021. Detailed planning began. As the year progressed, several initiatives were deliberated and initiated:
• Implemented a new, user-friendly web platform to simplify the giving process
• In the platform’s first year, annual contributions increased to record numbers, in part because of the new system.
• Expanded distribution and awareness strategies for the College of Fellows Newsletter started by Former Chancellor Vance resulted in substantially increased readership over previous years.
• Formed alliance with NOMA beginning with financial support for research on minority architects, which will be integral to an Octagon exhibit planned for October 2022.
• Adjusted COF Fund investment strategies to incorporate a more diverse and socially responsive portfolio.
• Deepened partnership with the Young Architects Forum to enhance mentoring activities.
• Developed revisions to the College’s Objects of Nomination to enhance clarity for candidate submissions and jury reviews.
• Initiated a task force to explore the organizational structure of the College’s Council of Regional Representative network.
• Developed Standard Operating Procedures to bring consistency to all Executive Committee activities and business operations.
• Continued to advance the College’s stance on sustainability and diversity in unison with AIA tenets.
The pandemic forced implementation of new technologies for safely conducting the College’s business. Following the success of the June 2020 virtual business meeting, the 2021 College of Fellows Business Meeting was also held virtually, with over 300 attending. Despite the loss of in-person interaction, the online platform allowed many more College members to engage versus traditional in-person luncheons. This new “tradition” will continue for 2022 and beyond.
The Business Meeting included the customary welcome, introductions, recognitions, and the Vice Chancellor Report from Roger Schluntz, which announced the recommended 2022 COF Slate of Officers: Roger Schluntz as 60th Chancellor, Frances Halsband as Vice Chancellor, Ron Blitch as Bursar and Kate Schwennsen as Secretary. The slate received unanimous approval by all Fellows in attendance.
Additional presentations included Abigail Brown, AIA, and Ryan McEnroe, AIA, from the Young Architects Forum; Jeanne Jackson, FAIA, Chair of the Council of Regional Representatives;
and Billie Faircloth, FAIA, Chair of the 2022 Latrobe Prize Jury. Faircloth explained the 2022 Latrobe Prize theme, “Buildings –Planetary Health and Human Health,” and the selection process for the award. A description of the Joint Investiture in December followed, with a look ahead at COF events planned for A’22 in Chicago.
In June, with easing of pandemic restrictions, the Executive Committee met in-person for the first time since December 2019. Chancellor Castellana hosted the meeting in his home and office in Birmingham-Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Two full days covered annual business, the Young Architects Awards, Emerging Professionals Component Grants, the Newsletter editor, and final planning for the Investiture for the classes of 2020 and 2021.
In August, an additional in-person session to conduct College business took place at Mackinac Island (Michigan) in conjunction with the AIA Michigan Mid-Summer Conference, which celebrated its 77th annual session. With over 200 attendees, the conference provided executive committee members opportunities to take part in conference activities and network with Fellows and architects from the Michigan region in the magnificent Lake Huron setting. The Executive Committee continued its work throughout the summer and fall, culminating with Governance Week in early December in Washington, DC.
Along with regular business and transitioning to the College’s new leadership slate, the focus was hosting the joint 2020-2021 Investiture. With attendance close to 1,000, Castellana and Kuttner guided a highly anticipated ceremony at the Kennedy Center Opera House to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of two classes of new Fellows. A champagne reception followed at AIA Headquarters to toast the accomplishments of the new Fellows with their families. Over 400 attended.
The following evening, Castellana presided at the Inauguration of Roger Schluntz as the College’s 60th Chancellor. Held at AIA Headquarters, the event included special tributes to Terri Stewart, Hon. AIA, as she leaves her position as Executive Director of our College to serve the AIA in a new capacity, and Robert Ivy, as he approaches his retirement. Ed Kodet, FAIA, was also honored as the 2021 recipient of the Leslie Boney Spirit Award and concluded with a special tribute to Castellana, who joins the esteemed group of Former Chancellors.
With the close of the 2021-2021 year, the College of Fellows thrives, and its legacy remains steeped in valued traditions enhanced by the necessities and technology of today!
