The AIAC (Atelier International d'Architecture Construite) was established in 1999 to develop an architectural design pedagogy with regard to globally connected issues and demands in the built environment. It is an association of leading architecture schools from around the world to share experiences working on common design projects each year. Students from partner schools collaborate for the cultural field survey of the specific location and exchange their design ideas with the display of their proposals. The winning works are selected by an international jury.

1.2 LOCATION

The intervention area is located in the country of Peru, department of Cusco, province of Cusco in the district of Wánchaq, this district covers an area of 478.30 hectares. The land limits to the north with the district of Cusco, to the east with the district of San Sebastián and to the south with the district of Santiago. The environment of the contest area is characterized as a consolidated area at the residential urban level and complemented by commerce, public services, special uses and public recreation areas.

The city of Cusco presents an irregular morphology on its edges. The place of intervention is located at the Teniente Velasco Astete International Airport. Which is the main point of arrival for anyone who wants to know the Inca city. The intervention area of the project has an area of 125,000 m2, equivalent to 12.5 ha. The land is located 3,000 m from the Main Square of Cusco and about 3,000 m from Av. de la Cultura.

1.4 CURRENT SITUATION

Currently the contest area is used as an air terminal for the city of Cusco, however this space will be disabled when the new Chinchero International Airport comes into operation.

The contest will develop the analysis of the city of Cusco and the specific place of study, investigating the needs of the people around it and seeking effective solutions for better development in the area. The main objective is to present an architectural proposal capable of efficiently responding to the demand presented by the sector, as well as using sustainably materials and design incorporating innovation, technology, energy efficiency and sustainability inputs.

2.1 OBJECT OF THE CONTEST

The objective is to incorporate this extension into the existing urban environment, for which it will previously be necessary to make a diagnosis of the unmet or unresolved needs of the inhabitants of the Wánchaq sector. Thus, it will also be valued that the solution considers the proximity of the Huatanay River in the proposal and values the cultural identity and biodiversity of the area.

It will be highly appreciated that the proposals of the Urban Plan as well as the architectural solutions developed in detail, incorporate the recommendations of the Sustainable Development Goals. From the criteria for the design phase, the choice of materials, as well as the most environmentally friendly construction processes.

The winning teams of the event will be awarded by the Ricardo Palma University and will be issued an international AIAC 2023 certificate.
