Delivering the last months with my successor
OBJECTIVES To help you understand why it’s importance to start codelivering things To guide you on how to start codelivering the next months To give some tips on how to make it happen for the next months
Why is codelivery important? Ensures long term development and continuity. Makes sure that all the work and achievements your commi5ee has made are not lost It makes sure that your successor is prepared to start his/her term from the beginning
Before start, think about it Put yourself in the posi9on of your successor – what would you want or need to know? • Think about (or find out) the specific experience and knowledge of the person you are handing over to and tailor your handover accordingly • Use clear systems and records throughout your year to store informa9on to make it easier to handover • If there is a lot of knowledge that only exists in your head make sure you get it all down on paper before you handover • Clarify what is definite, and what is your personal interpreta9on • Acknowledge that it is up to the new commi5ee if they choose to do things differently or take a different direc9on
Codelivery for the next 60 days:
Step 1 Finish your transition
Now it’s the moment that your successor should already have all the tools to make things happen and also this is the moment where you should have had a lot of conversations already about insights for the next term.
Step 2 Plan together
Put a common goal to yourselves and really define the responsibilities for each one of you for the next days and also to set clear check points for you to see how transition is going.
Step 2 Plan together
At the same time, also plan your HR allocation from now: how both teams are gonna work since now, who is delivering what.
Step 3 Shadowing Make sure you start already making the new team responsible for some deliverables already and that you know the dates they will start doing it. Maybe already communication with the network, for example, the new team can already start doing it from June with the help of the current team.
Some tips 1. Put already some visual things in your office to engage the next team: messages, visual goals tracking 2. Split already some key responsibilities – make the next 60 days plan with already responsibilities shared with the new team 3. Make sure the projects and activities you are doing now are things that the next team will follow up with – ask for their opinion and suggestions
