Welcome Party On the end of June, our 22 exchange participants from all around the world have arrived Malaysia to be with us. Right after their arrival, we organised an Incoming Preparation Seminar for them to kickstart their amazing journey in Malaysia. Next, we had some interesting activities with them though an Amazing Race. We brought them to explore the sceneries and cultures around Kuala Lumpur and ended at the Petronas Twin Towers. Currently, they are working on workshops that will be in a few secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Want to know more about their movement? Journey in Malaysia Q1: Short introduction about yourself. Hi, I am Emilie You, from France. I am 22 years old and I’m currently studying Management. Q2: Why you will choose to join Global Volunteer? I always wanted to volunteer. Since I was also a member of AIESEC, I knew that this platform would allow me to have an impact on people. AIESEC is shaping the leaders of tomorrow and as I study Management, I always wanted to become one despite the fear of responsibility I am ashamed to tell. So far this project made me step out of my comfort zone and I never thought until now I could lead a group of people coming from different countries with different background and skills. Q3: Why you will choose Malaysia? Honestly I didn’t choose Malaysia. I choose the project, Clean Our Plate. So if I’m here it’s somehow a bit random. But I thank God this project is held here in Malaysia. I love this country with its people and the food of course. Q4: What you hope to see by the end of your project? I hope to see that I could face any challenge and achieve to bring our the best of my teammates. But the most important is to see that I can do something to change the behaviour of people on food waste and arouse more attention on this issue.
Journey in Malaysia Q1: Short introduction about yourself. My name is Prashmit, I am from India. I like to play badminton and I want to learn everything that I can in the rest of my life. Q2: Why you will choose to join Global Volunteer? I really want to know the difference between cultures of people of different countries. I also hope to know the difference in their personalities. Q3: Why you will choose Malaysia? It is just that I had to start from a country from where I could learn things better than I could learn in my country. Q4: What you hope to see by the end of your project? I want to see a more sorted version of myself because I feel the need to learn a whole lot of things before I could realise my true goal. I’m still a novice.

Nepal in 53 Days Hi! I am Jia Jia and currently studying Business Administration in University of Malaya and will be graduating soon this coming October (2017). Seeing myself having a free semester before I graduate, I have actually decided to apply for AIESEC volunteer programme since I was in my first year.
T
he main force that pushed me going for the
programme is the inner call deep inside which I know that social work is not popular among Asians. I wish that I could do something to give back to the society before I start stepping into my real working life as an adult. I believe that Global Volunteer can grant me a chance to see more, feel more and at the same time repay my debt to the society that I have been getting from it for 24 years. Nepal is the country of my choice. Nepal is one of the third world countries and due to the earthquake in 2015, the country has had a very hard time resurrect from the devastating disaster. As a student, I know that the power of change within myself is puny but I wish I could do everything I could to make a little change for the country. And for that, I want to see how far I could go as well as what my limit is. I believe that being able to help in a country like Nepal where no one speaks your language as well as the poor living facilities, it granted me the best chance to explore myself and see myself clearer.
The project is named “Colourful Education” which the main purpose is to motivate the kids in pursuing education. The reason I chose the project is that I always believe that education is the main and the only element that can change a person’s life as well as the power it has to lead people out of poverty. I was placed in a private school, Apple International School in Tinkune, Kathmandu. I was an arts teacher for 2nd graders to 5th graders. Adapting myself in a totally strange city is way much harder than what I thought it is. Before I departed, my concern about the country is the food as well as the living conditions in Nepal. However, what really shattered me here was to get along with the people here as well as their behaviour. Every day here is about pushing your limits and sometimes, it was even over your limits. I would say Nepal is a really good country with all its remarkable nature, I will definitely hit back to the country. However, being a girl in country like Nepal is pretty dangerous and you have to know how to protect yourself. Throughout the time I was here with the kids of the school, I realized that the kids in the school was not educated about manners. Despite the knowledge they got from textbooks, I realized the most serious problem is that they are not being taught to be sincere with their friends or even their teacher. I have never seen this coming and it is very hard to make them understand the meaning behind ‘sharing’ among friends. I learned that after all, the attitude is the main problem in the education system in Nepal. I was placed together with a friend, Adriana from Czech Republic. We had been discussing the issues we went through and tried to influence the kids here with a right attitude towards their studies.
The exchange gave me the opportunity I have been longing for so many years. The experiences I have had here changed myself. It made me realise that there is so much to see and feel from the world as well as there are still so many people out there that need our help. Of all the good and awful experiences I have had here, as well as all the people I met, they are the best living textbooks I have never expected to get before that. I wish that other students or youth like me are able to work out their courage to walk out of your comfort zone. To see it, feel it and embrace it even though what you are going through is awful as those are the best enzymes for you to grow and learn.
Opportunities Nobody knows food like Malaysians do. Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures and that is quite evident in all of our local cuisines. However, the harsh reality of it all is that despite being a food paradise, we are a giant food dump as well. About 15,000 tonnes of food is wasted daily, which is enough to feed about 7.5 million people a day. We realize that the root of this problem is the mindset of Malaysians. Thus, AIESEC in Malaysia, University of Malaya is running a local project – Clean Our Plate to curb this issue. Starting from the end of June, we will be having our international volunteers with us to run workshops around Klang Valley. We do need help from you in our social project.
