Tourism • France’s fourth largest metropolitan area, an international crossroad and a dynamic financial centre, Lille is also an artistic and historic city. In 2004, it was designated as an European Culture Capital. Since then, Lille has become an important tourist destination, recognized for its welcoming living environment, well-preserved heritage and active cultural life.
The Fine Art Museum (Palais des Beaux-Arts) • Due to the size of its permanent collections, the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille is considered to be the second largest general-interest museum in France, just after the Louvre.

Place du Général de Gaulle (Grand Place) Standing in the centre of the Grand Place, this column commemorates Lille's resistance to the Austrian siege in September 1792.
The Opera House and The Chamber of Commerce • •
Place du Théâtre In 1907, following the fire at the theatre, the Lille architect LouisMarie Cordonnier was given the task of building an Opera House in the style of those built by Charles Garnier in Paris and Monte Carlo.

Built just before the First World War, it was inaugurated first by the Germans in 1914, then a second time by the French in 1923.

The belfry, 76 metres high, symbolises the power of the merchant cities.
