The
billion dollar
Man
Allied Wallet was founded by businessman, Andy Khawaja in California during 2002. After resigning as vice president of men’s fashion company, Bernini in 2001, he hired a group of developers to implement his payments company plan. Unlike many others starting out in business, Andy did not rely on investors’ money, instead choosing to fund the project by himself. We caught up with Andy for a chat about life, luxury and why, when it comes to a good steak, distance is no object.
Allied Wallet is, at its heart, a luxury brand. It may appear to the untrained eye to be one of many – albeit far more successful than most – online payment company, however, delve a little deeper and you’ll see that the business offers a raft of unique services, tailored specifically to its clients and designed to accommodate merchants with a tweaked, one of a kind service.

Allied Wallet provides a secure online payment system, as well as peer-to-peer transfers and smartphone card payments. The award winning company is, at its heart, a luxury brand. It may appear to the untrained eye to be one of many – albeit far more successful than most – online payment company, however, delve a little deeper and you’ll see that the business offers a raft of unique services, tailored specifically to its clients and designed to accommodate merchants with a tweaked, one of a kind service. Andy’s passion and enthusiasm for his business is unmistakeable. “Before staring the company,” he states, “I saw room for something so much better in terms of e-commerce. From this Allied Wallet was born and I now firmly believe that we have changed, and will continue to change the world of online payments.” After processing over a billion dollars globally, consumers and merchants in their millions are now recognising the secure facilities that Allied Wallet offers. The carefully assembled team behind the brand takes pride in offering users the lowest rates, 24-hour customer service, and the most secure, award-winning payment technology solution available. Allied Wallet’s global financial processing packages have been so successful that even clients like Visa, MasterCard and American Express have jumped on board, joining merchants and consumers in 196 countries in taking advantage of Allied Wallet’s state of the art, in-house technology. A Man with a Mission One of the most striking chapters of the Allied Wallet story concerns how Andy was able to create a successful business from such humble beginnings. His secret: Not only working hard, but working smart. Born in war-torn Beirut, Lebanon, he moved as a child to Europe and later to the US, attending college and working a number of jobs, including flipping burgers in a fast food restaurant and serving customers in a supermarket. These early jobs instilled in the budding entrepreneur the understanding of what customers need – a mantra still preached within Allied Wallet today. From the outset, Andy was determined to create a company that actually listened to the people, enabling him to understand exactly what customer required and when. Although many of his family and friends thought that he was crazy to be taking on a project this large, Andy enjoys taking risks and has no fear of what may lie ahead. “People who doubted me, only made me want to pursue my goals even more,” he explains. “I followed my instincts and here I am today.” Security was also a major consideration and Andy soon realised that, to keep his customers happy, he would need to offer a way to make transactions that were both convenient and secure. After just a few minutes in Andy’s company, it soon becomes clear that he’s not shy when it comes to sharing his success with those around him. In addition to his many philanthropic ventures, he is happiest when his close family and friends - many of whom have helped and supported him from the very beginning - are seeing the benefits of his hard work also, and it is this fun-loving generosity that has seen him dubbed “The God of Spray”. A confusing moniker at first, however all becomes clear when Andy tells us about his penchant for inviting his friends, employees (along with various exotic animals) to a private tropical beach where they celebrate the

past year’s business success with no fewer than 3,000 bottles of fine Champagne. Interestingly, Andy has never been a fan of Champagne and prefers to do his celebrating with a bottle of luxury rosé wine.
If I were to give advice to a budding entrepreneur, I would say don’t be afraid, do what you do best and follow your instincts. Do not give up, make your dreams come true. Also do not think of it as a dream - if you think of it this way then it will always stay a dream.
Traveling in Style Unsurprisingly, world travel features high on Andy’s list of things he loves to do, with the South of France a favourite year-round destination and London his preferred place for a Christmas jaunt. He also loves Tokyo and Hong Kong, particularly the culture and food, and fills us in on how he has been known to fly to Japan for a meal at one of his favourite restaurants, Ukai Tei. Here, he enjoys gourmet steak from cows that have been massaged throughout their lives to ensure a ‘spiritual and stress free lifestyle’, which it is said improves the taste and quality of the meat. Andy describes this particular dish as “a one of a kind piece of steak”. As you’d expect, Andy likes to travel in style and only uses private jets, saying, “If you can afford it then why not?” He has also been known to put a $500,000 Rolls Royce on his card without a second’s thought, however, when it comes to driving his luxury cars, he makes it clear that, rather than employ a driver, he prefers to be behind the wheel himself. “I like to be able to say to myself, ‘it’s a lovely sunny day, which car shall I take out for a drive today?’”
“
Tailoring Takes Time Andy is also fascinated by expertly-crafted watches, and luxury timepieces are one of his favourite ways to spend his money. He explains, “I like custom made and tailored items such as watches. I like to see that the designers and makers have spent good, quality time on the piece and that it will be beautifully crafted to perfection.” Chopard and Richard Mille are just a couple of brands that Andy likes to purchase his watches from, prices of which start from 500k per piece.
“
“
Making a Difference It is no secret that Andy is a very generous businessman. He not only gifts his friends and peers, but he also makes sure that by choosing Allied Wallet, you are also choosing to team up with with a company that always tries to make a positive difference in the world. The business has made alliances with a wide number of organisations that strive to make the world a better place, including charities that support children, animals, police officers, and humanitarian relief.
I like custom made and tailored items such as watches. I like to see that the designers and makers have spent good, quality time on the piece and that it will be beautifully crafted to perfection.
Tricks of the Trade Surrounded by luxury and able to fully enjoy the fruits of his labour, Andy could be forgiven for taking his eye off the ball occasionally, but it’s clear that it doesn’t take much to get him talking passionately once again about business. “If I were to give advice to a budding entrepreneur,” he says, “I would say don’t be afraid, do what you do best and follow your instincts. Do not give up, make your dreams come true. Also do not think of it as a dream - if you think of it this way then it will always stay a dream. “I made it now I want to help others to do it too. I believe that the best CEO is the CEO that teaches what he has learnt. My biggest regret is that I didn’t start earlier. If I had started my journey to success before I did, then I would have had more time to teach others everything that I know.” LUX - August 2015 7

Introducing Laura Ward-Ongley
The Jet Set Lifestyle of the £10million CEO, Laura Ward-Ongley. Travelling is often long and most of the time, not overally enjoyable. That is unless you are able to travel first class. Which is what CEO of FabTrade, Laura Ward-Ongley does. Having pioneered a brand new field, FabTrade is the UK’s leading digital influence agency that connects premium and luxury brands that are predominately PLC and FTSE listed companies, to the world’s most powerful digital influencers. To be able to convince owners of some of the biggest companies in the World to reassign their budget with her and making them understand the importance of this new age of marketing, social media and viral distribution is something to low and behold so much so that her company has just been valued at £10 million. Due to the nature of her company, Laura is probably responsible for the latest technology gadget that you bought for your next holiday, or why you decided to change cars, or perhaps why you chose one luxury airline over their competitors. If it weren’t for Laura, her connections with celebrities and social influencers, these brands - whilst they would still be considered giant and amongst the top of their game would be chosen less over their competitors. Whilst Laura is darting between meetings, she does so in style. On a global level, first class is the only way – on a city level, luxury cars are the transport of choice. But when it comes down to essentials, the necessities, the things that she can’t leave the house without when travelling, what does Laura always ensure she has in her hand luggage? “When it comes to the hand luggage itself, I love a backpack”, Laura starts. “Because my trips are often only for 48 hours, I don’t usually need hold luggage but when I do, I opt for my Louis Vuitton case. If it’s just hand luggage then I will never choose anything other than my Moschino black leather backpack. It holds everything I need for a busy 48 hours, is comfortable to wear and divides sartorial opinion – it’s everything a bag should be!”
8 LUX - August 2015
Cashmere “When travelling, comfort is a must. The planes can be very cold so cashmere luxuries are at the top of my list for travel essentials”, Laura tells us. “My favourite pair of cashmere socks is from The White Company. I also have a selection of cashmere shawls in a variety of colours – they double up perfectly as a blanket, scarf, pillow and even a black out blind! I always buy mine from Willow Cashmere.” Notebook – Aspinal of London “An embossed notebook is a must when travelling – you never know when you’re going to be inspired and ideas may come. It’s better to be prepared”. Laura always chooses Aspinal of London as her stationary brand of choice due to their high quality leather, luxuriously thick paper and stylish nature. Mont Blanc Pen Laura is a traditionalist when it comes to her pen. “I love how a fountain pen glides across the paper and the process of having to refill it with ink is really old-fashioned but refreshing in this technology obsessed day and age”. Beauty “There are some things that I girl should never leave the house without, let alone travel without.” Laura’s beauty regime can sometimes become tricky when she is travelling for long periods of time, but she has it all sussed thanks to a faithful few products. “Daniele de Winter’s Beauty Shot is one of the best things that I have ever bought. When I was in Monaco, I came across the brand and it blasts through my jet lag whilst charging my body with anti-oxidants.” “Business trips can be exhausting and sleep depriving so finding a product that helps you look your best, even if you don’t feel it, is essential”, Laura continues. “I’ve found that with Aurelia Cell Repair Night Oil. It rehydrates my skin whilst I sleep and I slather on this probiotic miracle oil in a hope that when I wake up, I’ll look better than I feel!”
Travel beauty is all about multi-tasking products that do the job of ten, particularly when luggage allowance is restrictive. “This teeny tiny wonder pot of Sensual Skin Enhancer from Kevyn Aucoin contains a concentrated skin-coloured pigment. You have two options - mix with your SPF to turn it into a beach friendly tinted moisturizer or combine with a drop or two of face oil for a brightening foundation. Using it ‘neat’ on tired under eyes or a blemish is another reason that I couldn’t live without this product. Genius.” “Finally, my signature scene is from Hotel Costes Eau de Toilette”, Laura adds. “Its heady and hypnotic blend makes everywhere a home from home”. Sunglasses “After a long flight, I’m often tired, jet-lagged and dry eyed from the strong air conditioning, which is why I never go anywhere without my Victoria Beckham sunglasses. Oversized and black is the only way for me.” Flat Shoes When asked about her footwear of choice, Laura commented, “I pretty much live in heels but coming off a plane, and if I’m not heading directly to a meeting, I always opt for flats. The cute and quirky designs from Charlotte Olympia are really fun, but for ultimate style I always opt for Parisian brand, Chatelles. They come in so many different prints and you can personalize them too.” “But, that said, I never board a plane without my Nike Roshe Runs. If you go on a long haul flight wearing anything else, then you’re doing it wrong”, states Laura. Headphones Laura often travels during the night meaning that sleeping whilst on the move is key to surviving. “Noise cancelling headphones are the perfect way to drown out wailing babies and unwanted small talk. I love putting classical music on, settling in and trying to get some sleep before landing.” These wireless, noise cancelling headphones from Bang & Olufsen are top of Laura’s list.

It has built in Wifi so that I can transfer my travel photographs wirelessly from my camera to social media within seconds,” Laura informs us, before she adds, “Because if its not on Instagram, did it even happen?”

Located in the heart of London, just a short walk away from Bayswater and Queensway Tube Stations, and only a 5 minute walk away from Hyde Park, it is the perfect place to stay while visiting London for business or pleasure. After being courteously greeted by our gracious concierge staff, the first thing you will notice is the exquisite lobby décor. Should your room be unavailable upon your arrival, you are more than welcome to rest comfortably in one of the many leather armchairs in the Theatre Bar and enjoy a reasonably priced and refreshing drink. The rooms may not be spacious but, like the lobby, are furnished in opulent style. Don’t let the old world charm of the décor fool you though, The Grand Royale offers all modern amenities one would expect such as: air conditioning, flatscreen televisions, lush carpeted floors, private bathroom with free toiletries (including iron and ironing board, hair dryer) and of course free broadband internet. The cleanliness of the rooms and hotel in general, are above reproach and the complimentary fruit in the room is a lovely gesture. The rooms are kept at a comfortable temperature; however extra blankets are available on request should you find them warm. Although well stocked and immaculate appearance, the bathrooms presented one of the few areas of complaint, due to the poor heat and pressure of the water. This may not be as noticeable for the average European businessman or holiday maker, but is much more noticeable to the visitor from North America. The staff responded promptly to the concern and did their best to rectify the situation to the best of their ability. The greatest asset to the hotel is its convenient location. The Grand Royale is surrounded by established bars and the restaurants it is never a challenge to find a good meal. Westminster is resplendent with shopping, theatres and historic monuments and with London Paddington Train Station a short 15 minute walk the rest of the city is never far away. Taste - Mighty Fine
MightyFine Mighty Fine have a delicious range of premium chocolate dipped honeycomb shards with chocolate flavours including Strawberries and Cream, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, Lemon Tart and Summer Orange. Founders Kit and Ross met making food TV and a little later down the line met again and through a joint love of food, in 2012, decided to set up the company. Ross’ family have worked in chocolate production for three generations which provided him with an insight into the market and its inner workings. In 2012, Mighty Fine set up a small shop in Camden Market selling everything from truffles and chocolate bars to honeycomb.
It was a resounding success, but above all their honeycomb sold quicker than they could make it and they quickly realised that there was a real gap in the market for high quality honeycomb. The following year, they moved into a production unit in Peckham to streamline production and dedicated over 1,000 hours to perfecting their honeycomb recipe. They also spent time perfecting and improving the packaging process and the face of the brand, and following this relaunched their premium honeycomb range. The honeycomb is made using real honey and encased in a layer of velvety smooth quality chocolate. Each luxuriant bar is made by
hand in the company’s London kitchen using a carefully developed and closely guarded secret technique. Quite uniquely, Mighty Fine Honeycomb use real honey to create the brand’s signature light and crisp crunch. The products are then dipped into a wonderful array of chocolate flavours, from Belgian Milk Chocolate to 70% Dark Chocolate. Mighty Fine Honeycomb donate 5% of profits to Friends of the Honeybee, a campaign organised by the British Beekeepers Association to halt the decreasing number of Britain’s honey bees and other pollinators and build a better future for them. £49.95 per bag

Taste - The Golden Arrow Pulls into Kings Cross
Representing a golden age of travel, glamour and sophistication, dining aboard the iconic 1920s first-class Pullman train, The Golden Arrow was once about the experience as much as reaching the destination. Today, The Golden Arrow Restaurant & Bar in King’s Cross celebrates this glittering nostalgia whilst bringing it into the modern era with contemporary décor, fine cuisine and covetable cocktails.
Style Situated in the vibrant Pullman London St Pancras hotel, The Golden Arrow’s sleek and stylish decor is instantly striking with clean lines and luxurious fabrics. Statement lighting, quirky bowler hat lamp shades and bright pops of colour ensure this is a destination that stands out from the crowd. Slip into the soft grey leather banquettes for a leisurely meal, watch the chefs work their magic from the theatre-style kitchen or pull up a pew for post-work tipples at the polished bar. Set in the heart of King’s Cross, with both King’s Cross St Pancras and Euston stations only 3 minute walk away, it’s the perfect destination for a spot of lunch, cocktail or dinner before hoping on a train. Savour With a menu skillfully created by executive chef Mike Penn, the feel-good cuisine bursts with flavour and vibrant ingredients. Mike personally travels the length and breadth of the country, visiting small farms to ensure dishes are made using only the freshest British produce. Things get off to a good start with dishes such as Cornish mackerel confit with lemon sherbet dressing; Rosary goat’s cheese with caramelised figs; and Gloucestershire Old Spot ham hock and leek terrine. Dishes cooked on the Josper grill dominate the mains and include salt marsh lamb rump with mashed potato; corn-fed chicken breast with coconut, chilli and coriander sauce; 28-day aged côte de boeuf; pan-fried sea bass with leek compote; and grilled tiger prawns and Scottish scallops. Must-try desserts include salted caramel chocolate tart and warm pecan, walnut and blueberry tart with pistachio ice cream, or delve into the cheese board served with a selection of chutneys and quince jam. Those looking for a lighter bite can choose from the bar menu filled with familiar favourites such as gourmet sandwiches, seasonal salads and soups.
Sip Whiskey is the drink of choice here. An impressive display showcases a collection of over 200 rare and sought-after bottles, sure to satisfy even the most ardent connoisseur. From experts to the downright curious, The Golden Arrow regularly hosts a series of Whiskey Master Club events led by the whiskey sommelier, perfect for those looking to sample the goods of Scotland’s famous distilleries, taste the wares of the ever-growing producers of Japan, discover the rare and sought-after whiskies of France or enjoy the sweet and spicy notes of American bourbon. With skilled mixologists at your beck-and-call to mix and muddle well-balanced concoctions, the classic cocktail list will hit the spot. Try the Cucumber Martini – a cool mix of Tanqueray gin, apple and cucumber or the Premium Caramel Mojito – a sweet blend of Ketel One vodka, Malibu, peach liqueur, strawberry purée, orange and pineapple juice. Meanwhile grape lovers will adore The Golden Arrow’s extensive and well-sourced Vinoteca library, with an in-house sommelier on hand to perfectly pair fine wine with dishes. An impressive selection of wines are available by both the bottle and glass thanks to the restaurant’s enomatic wine dispenser. lux As I sat by our private pool sipping on a mojito made from authentic Cuban rum purchased the week before in Havana, I concluded it had been a pretty spectacular first day in the Cayman Islands. Rising at dawn, I’d watched the sunrise, a blushing pink and orange sky reflected in the gentle ocean waves. As this incredible view could be seen straight through the French glass balcony doors of my room, I hadn’t even had to leave the comfort of my bed. After a leisurely breakfast, I drove down to Rum Point where a chartered boat was waiting to meet me. Cruising out into the Caribbean Sea, our private group watched the stunning blue waters with a refreshing, cold beer in our hands. The hot sun glared down but there were plenty of opportunities to cool off jumping in to snorkel, swim, spot starfish along the seabed or just splash about.

designed by Clamers Gibbs Martin Joseph and boasts a picturesque drive complete with shocking-pink bougainvillea; a large foyer containing an imposing staircase with wrought iron balustrades; elegant marble floors; spacious balcony; and beautiful sea-views from each of the four ensuite bedrooms, all of which are fitted with antique or reproduction French fixtures. Just off the huge living room, the large executive chef’s kitchen is fully fitted with Clive Christian solid wood cabinets, stainless steel sinks and appliances. Not to mention the charming ocean views throughout the house. When I’d had enough of lounging in the hot tub, I had a quick dip in the freshwater infinity pool and padded down to the private sandy beach. There was no-one else in sight and, were it not for the huge properties dotted along the beachfront, I could have been fooled into thinking I was on my own private island.
The main attraction of the day was a trip to the legendary tourist spot, Stingray City. These shallow sand bars, originally an area where fishermen used to clean and gut their catch, now offer the opportunity to see stingrays up close in their natural environment. Over the years, these usually shy creatures who had been feeding on the fishermen’s discarded fish guts began to gather at the sound of motor boats (which they came to associate with food). They now happily interact with tourists, knowing they might be rewarded with a morsel of squid.
Donning my mask and fins, I dived into the azure ocean for a spot of snorkelling. With the sun on my back, I only had to swim a few minutes to find squirrel fish dancing across the pristine reef.
As I waded into the water, huge stingrays began to assemble around me. Under the expert guidance of the crew, I slid my arms underneath to hold one of these gentle creatures. It felt like wet shammy leather and was surprisingly heavy. I was also encouraged to give him a kiss - apparently smooching a stingray is seven years’ good luck. I’d joked about finding an eligible bachelor during my stay in the Cayman Islands but had never imagined I’d be locking lips with a slippery sea creature!
I cruised down the coastal road until I reached Ocean Frontiers’ dive shop in the East End. The helpful, friendly crew helped me kit and briefed me on the day’s dives before we took a long stride off the back of the boat and plunged into the balmy waters. We explored Turtle Pass where, despite the dive site’s promising name, we failed to see any turtles but were rewarded with crystal clear visibility beyond anything I’d experienced before.
The next day was dedicated to relaxation. I was staying in the beautiful 6,000 square foot Villa Zara in Rum Point on the North side of the island. This palatial gated property offers the perfect combination of indulgent luxury and privacy - the housekeeper, who lived in the two bedroom guest cottage at the end of the drive, went above and beyond her daily maid services. She even popped in one day with freshly baked cupcakes. This four bedroom villa is currently on the market for those looking to snap up a luxurious holiday home. The property was
I didn’t mind rising early again the next day partly because I was excited about a morning of Caribbean diving but also because I knew I’d be relaxing on a sunlounger with a glass (or two) of rum punch the next day. With such lavish accommodation, I was determined to make the most of it.
After a short rest on the boat, I was ready to continue exploring - this time the dive site was a Fish Tank. Drifting along on the gentle current, I admired healthy coral reef and sponges as well as colourful parrotfish, trumpetfish and boxfish. Unlike my time at Turtle Pass, I was lucky enough to be joined by an inquisitive hawksbill turtle. Swimming along effortlessly next to this beautiful creature was breath-taking. As well as daily dive trips, Ocean Frontiers runs speciality dives and invited me to join them on a lionfish hunt. During these dives, they track and spear Indo-Pacific red lionfish which have become a pest in the Caribbean. I

lux also learned about the methods being used to control the spread of the invasive species and how culling protect the island’s marine parks and coral reefs. It was an invigorating experience. Being careful to keep well clear of the lionfish’s venomous fins, as well as the sharp spear gun, I watched the licensed culler expertly cock his spear, stab and dispose of his catch in a special containment barrel designed to protect him from the fish’s poisonous spines. After a successful dive, we took our catch back to Ocean Frontiers’ bar, Eagle Rays, where the local chefs cooked lionfish tacos. I was intrigued to see what lionfish would taste like and wasn’t disappointed. It was lightly pan fried with cajan spices and piled into soft tacos with salad, sweet chili, mayo and a squeeze of lemon - having seen it caught before my very eyes only an hour ago, it couldn’t have been more fresh. Despite this hearty lunch, I’d worked up an appetite after the day’s activities and was hungry again by the time I arrived at the family-run restaurant Kaibo Upstairs for dinner that evening. In keeping with the rest of my stay, the restaurant offered an exceptional sea view from its balcony. Upstairs, which is Kaibo’s signature restaurant headed up by Michelin Star chef Laurence Tham, has an impressive list of accolades. Modern European techniques are combined with local and Caribbean ingredients to create an impressive seasonal menu. Locally sourced seafood is a speciality. I wanted to sample as many of these quality dishes as possible so I opted for the popular tasting menu. I tucked into freshly caught wahoo with chipotle carrot puree; an exquisite shrimp and almond crusted grouper accompanied by sauteed bok choy and coconut ginger infused jasmin rice; hearty lobster crab fritters; and tender slow roasted pork belly on a bed of lentils, caramelised pearl onions and drizzled with a five spice jus. Although I was incredibly full, I couldn’t resist the decadent chocolate pot made with rich valrhona chocolate,

refreshing vanilla mousse and served with a delicate hazelnut tuille. I’d enjoyed a week of total luxury and indulgence, but it all paled in comparison to our final activity, which was, in a word, magical: a night-time bioluminescent kayaking tour. We met our tour guides at nightfall and paddled our kayaks out into the sea with the sun setting over the ocean ahead of us. As the evening got darker, the night became peppered with a blanket of stars and amongst them we saw Venus and Jupiter shining brightly. But it was below us that we’d experience the real spectacle. As we paddled into the rare bioluminescent bay, we noticed that our paddle strokes were gradually becoming more obvious against the dark water and looked almost green in colour. As we continued making our way into the centre of the secluded bay,the ‘bubbles’ became brighter and brighter. This phenomenon was actually evidence of microscopic organisms in the water which can create and emit their own light energy, just like fireflies. This means that when something in the water touches them they can glow in total darkness. It’s actually a clever form of predator avoidance (the bright light attracts bigger fish to eat the little fish that might be about to eat it) but this doesn’t make it any less fascinating to behold. Phosphorescent swirls erupted around our paddles as they cut through the dark water. Dipping our fingers, hands, and then whole arms into the water, the same thing happened - by this point, the bioluminescence was glowing a bright, iridescent green against our skin. Around us, the water seemed to be alight as we scooped up handfuls, which glittered in our palms, and scattered them across the surface, which itself sparkled where each droplet touched it. I could only imagine how mesmerising it would be on a rainy night. Boarding my flight home I was loath to leave the magnificent island and return to reality.

It was snapped up on the show’s penultimate day and has been winning awards and plaudits ever since. Unusually for a superyacht of its size, Axioma, which has a crew of 20 including a Michelin star chef, is available for charter. Up to 12 guests can enjoy life on board, experiencing the ultimate in holiday luxury and discovering hidden parts of the Mediterranean or the Caribbean that are normally impossible to reach. On-board facilities include a private cinema, spa, gym, pool and deck Jacuzzi; the yacht, which is available for charter through YPI Charter, also has its own 40-knot fast cruiser. Guests who have enjoyed the incomparable Axioma experience include F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and Kendall Jenner, whose picture of herself on board became the most viewed image in the history of Instagram, with 2.5m shares. Axioma’s six staterooms, comprise a master suite, 3 VIP staterooms and two twin cabins, all on the main deck. The yacht’s “wow factor” comes from the spectacular atrium gallery at the aft end of the main salon, which was created by combining two desks, giving it a uniquely light and airy feel. The yacht’s designer, the late Alberto Pinto, fashioned a contemporary summer-house style so guests feel they are staying in a comfortable home rather than a hotel. A private owners’ deck gives complete privacy when desired. The yacht’s ultra-modern stabilisation system reduces roll at its cruising speed of 14 knots. Guests plan the itinerary for their trip, choosing the destinations. Captain Mark Giblin and Chief Stewardess Suzy Sawers can organise everything from dives in secluded waters to silver service dinners on private beaches. Cannes Yachting Festival’s Guide to Yachtiquette

With Cannes Yachting Festival fast approaching, the Côte d’Azur will sparkle with the glitz and glamour of the boating world. Taking place between 8 and 13 September 2015, the festival starts the yachting calendar and offers visitors a taste of the jet-set life where understanding Yachtiquette is a must. With this in mind Cannes Yachting Festival Show Manager, Sylvie Ernoult has put together the top tips to stick to whilst onboard a yacht.
Drive - Cannes Yachting Festival’s Guide to Yachtiquette
Look the part. For yachting we usually wear light-coloured clothing that can wrinkle, and get wet. Be aware that it is customary whilst on board a luxury yacht to abide by the ‘bare feet’ rule and if shoes are allowed on the deck they should be soft soled boat shoes. Do not wear heels as these can scratch and damage teak decking. Finally don’t forget to bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. When in the harbor, be courteous and considerate of crews on neighboring boats when socialising in the cockpit early in the morning or late at night. Keep noise to a minimum before 8 a.m. and after 11 p.m. Music and lively conversation carry easily over the water. Be punctual for the sailing, or even try to arrive early. Not only are you keeping the other guests waiting if you are late but also your host and the crew. If it is a busy dock, other boats will be waiting as well. Always allow extra time to get to your boarding destination. Ask permission to board the yacht. When on the pier, call up to the deck saying something along the lines of “Good morning! May I come aboard?” or “Permission to come aboard, captain?” Of course you are welcome to board, but this gesture is a formality and courtesy. Children are welcome aboard many yacht charters though it is important for guests to remain responsible for them. Some families bring along a nanny who can be accommodated on board though if not, crew members should not be expected to babysit. A Home from home - whilst on board a luxury yacht it is essential to remember that although the yacht is yours for the duration of the charter, it should be treated as though it were your own home. Owner’s offer their luxury yachts for charter under the circumstances that they will be treated well. Keep in mind the behavior of yourself and your guests. Food and drink - your own personal chef will have a galley stocked with items that you have requested and will tailor each day’s menu to your tastes and dietary needs. They will be sure to accommodate all restrictions (including special menus). Depending on space on the yacht, I suggest packing your personal items in soft luggage bags as this enables easier storage whilst on board. To test your Yachtiquette, tickets for Cannes Yachting Festival are priced at 15€ per person, or 28€ for two in advance, or at the show for 18€ per person: www.cannesyachtingfestival.com

Super Packers
How to Take the Pain out of Packing
42 LUX - August 2015
http://lux.acquisition-intl.com/
lux By Michael Shaw, Founder of Franklin - Lifestyle Assistance, Household Management and Private Staffing. http://franklinlondon.com/
Extensive international travel and residing in different homes or hotels can make constantly moving belongings between destinations a laborious task for high net worth families and individuals. Many are therefore starting to use the services of ‘super packers’ who take the stress and worry out of frequent travel by ensuring the seasonal planning, care and safe storage of luxury clothing, shoes and valuables. These experts are professionally trained in the care of luxury clothing and work to ensure that all possessions are ready whenever and wherever required. Preparation is the key to success for packers and their employers alike. Employers need to think ahead about their travel plans and wardrobe requirements and convey these to packers. Once this has been established, packers will usually refer to a photographed inventory to gather the items that are required – perhaps liaising with the client’s other staff members in different homes or hotels where clothing may be stored, to ensure that they have the full range of items. Then comes the delicate part: the packing. Cramming luggage into a small space is usually not a priority for the HNW traveler so there is more of a focus on ensuring quality of packing over quantity in the case. Heavier items will be packed at the bottom, delicate items at the top and acid-free tissue paper used around delicate or easily-creased garments. It is also crucial for the packers to factor shopping sprees in to the size of the luggage required to make life easier for them at the end of the trip. The packers will more often than not use a different case for different kinds of clothing, creating bespoke suitcases for items like dresses or suits. Cases may also be grouped by the material going inside and will be accompanied by labelled packing lists. It goes without saying that the most valuable items should always travel with the individual or family to avoid them being lost in transit. When undertaking packing for HNWs, who often travel for long periods of time, packers are frequently asked to include ‘unexpected’ items. A client of one packer never travels anywhere without his own luxurious portable coffee machine set that would not look out of place in a top coffee shop. It’s also not uncommon to have to factor weaponry into a packing itinerary, particularly if families are flying to the UK for the shooting season. In this case it is crucial to ensure that all paperwork for special equipment has been properly and fully completed before the trip to ensure that there are no hold ups or airport security alerts and that they arrive on time.
Style - ‘Super Packers’: How to Take the Pain out of Packing
One of the challenges with a lot of luggage can be getting it to the destination itself. It is advisable to make sure that firstly, the vehicle taking the group or individual to the airport is large enough to handle the luggage. If it requires a separate vehicle, someone should travel in this vehicle with the bags to ensure security as the luggage alone can be extremely expensive (let alone the contents) so tight security at points like check in is crucial. Packers and household staff will normally arrange excess baggage requirements for commercial airlines ahead of time, but this is less of a concern if travelling by private jet. Prior to the family or individual arriving at the destination, the packer will get in to the hotel suite or home to unpack the luggage and ensure that all clothes are crease free (portable steamers are a must here!), ready to wear and hung or stored to the client’s requirement. On departure, the packer will go in to the room to re-pack, as well as complete and update the inventory. Once guidance from the client or staff has been received on where to store the items, a decision may be made to send them to a different residence or on to a hotel for the next time they are needed. Finally, after the unpacking has been finished at the various destinations, all items are checked for problems then laundered, pressed and carefully stored. Acid-free tissue paper and moth-proofing are vital here to keep the garments in good condition until their next use and suitcases will be examined and treated for marks before being stored away. Luxury packers are invaluable for those whose internationally mobile and busy lives demand them. Sadly we don’t all have someone to do our packing, unpacking and holiday washing for us, but there are tips and tricks from these super-packers that we can all take on board. • Heavier items to be packed at the bottom of the case and delicate items on top prevents creasing of lighter garments • Valuable items travel with you at all times to avoid the distress of losing a suitcase containing something priceless • Limiting the weight of items and looking for lighter alternatives – e.g. swapping wooden shoe trees for plastic ones – can help you to avoid excess baggage charges • Don’t over pack – it creates more creases for your clothes. Taking the time to make sure they are properly folded will ensure your clothes look their best upon arrival. Consider using tissue paper when folding items that crease easily. • Unpack and hang any garments with minor creasing in the bathroom, as humidity from bathing or showering improves creasing and helps them to drop out

These exclusive binoculars have been meticulously crafted with an aluminium outer shell, featuring hundreds of fine grooves milled into the surface – resulting in exceptional styling and a unique, tactile finish.
Zagato was founded in Milan in 1919 by Ugo Zagato, famous for having been the first in the automotive industry to apply advanced, lightweight aviation technology to design more aerodynamic car bodies. With these principles, Zagato became an iconic racing champion of the world’s greatest competitions, and even today remains a leading international marque for classic, lightweight, aerodynamic, sportinglifestyle collectible cars. Zagato’s Atelier and Total Design Center remains in Milan, where it continues to design and build unique, limited-series collectible cars. Earlier this year, the Atelier presented the Zagato Mostro powered by Maserati to the international public at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The Mostro pays tribute to the historic, one-off Maserati 450 S Zagato from 1957, nicknamed ‘the Monster’, which is one of the most precious collectors’ cars in the world today. Availability and pricing The Leica Ultravid 8x32 ‘Edition Zagato’ is scheduled to be available in the UK from September 2015 from selected Leica stockists, at a suggested retail price of £2,465 including VAT.

Hotel Aurelio What does your business do? The Hotel Aurelio in Lech offers luxurious rooms and suites as well as a chalet for up to 20 people, a gourmet restaurant and a big spa area. Who are your clients? Our main clients are leisure travellers, including DINKY´s (Double income no kids yet), families with children, honeymooners or wedding couples. Aurelio clients have a passion for food, spa as well as sports. We also have business clients who organize meetings or events at the Aurelio. What makes you unique? Our luxurious and very spacious rooms and suites have a unique design and interior and a very cosy and intimate atmosphere. Furthermore we offer outstanding service quality which is proofed by a relation of 40 employees to 18 rooms. What’s your biggest challenge facing you at present? Lech is well known as a winter destination with its endless slopes and snow capped mountains. The alpine summer is a real insider tip and it offers plenty to do and to see. We want to set a new trend which brings lovers of nature and luxury to our place also in the “green” times of the summer. What’s the aim for your business? We want to create a number one Aurelio brand - known worldwide for its outstanding service and product quality. What’s your company’s biggest challenge? Our biggest challenge is to increase clients and profit also in international challenging times. What business/business person do you most admire and why? The business I admire most is tourism in general since it is a unique branch that gives the chance to connect with international people, cultures and languages at different places all over the world. lux What does your business do? Loch Leven Hotel is a small independent hotel in the rugged and remote Scottish Highlands. We provide a comfortable base for our guests to explore the breath taking area with a true focus on service which ensures that from the moment people arrive they are truly made to feel at home. Who are your clients? The hotel welcomes a diverse range of people as the Highlands appeals to so many demographics. We are in Lochaber, The Outdoor Capital of The UK, so with both Glencoe and Ben Nevis on our doorstep we play host to a lot of outdoor activity enthusiasts. This being said, many people visit us simply to escape unwind and relax by the fire in our well stocked bar with a Whisky, Gin or hand crafted local beer. What makes you unique? Loch Leven Hotel is quirky and fun, no two rooms are the same, nor would we want them to be. Since the roots of the hotel date back to the 17th Century the building has a wealth of character and charm. When you combine this friendly, knowledgeable and talented staff we think that we have created a home from home where people can truly relax. What’s your biggest challenge facing you at present? Not having enough rooms! The West Highlands is such a popular destination especially during the summer months and so demand for accommodation in the area surpasses supply. We spend hours each evening helping people find accommodation and often this can be hours from our doorstep. What’s the aim for your business? Improving services through staff training and development whilst continually reinvesting in upgrading the hotel so that we can meet the needs of tomorrow’s travellers. What’s your company’s biggest challenge? Seasonality! Spring, Summer and Autumn are busy times for the leisure hospitality trade but the winter can be severe. Many of our competitors and other businesses close their doors or have very reduced operating times which leads to less return custom for the area. Perhaps if small businesses in the area were incentivised to remain open year round we could develop more successful business models and develop the area’s economy. What business/business person do you most admire and why? This is an easy one. I most admire Peter Taylor former owner of Town House Collection. Having been fortunate enough to have worked for him for some years, his passion for hospitality and the company which he led was incredible. He is generous to the core and always ahead of trends which made his hotels unique and un-paralleled! 50 LUX - August 2015
