The retail industry has changed over the years and in today’s environment, small brick and mortar stores will only survive by providing exemplary customer service in all aspects of the business. Employing approximately 30 associates, the owners strive to have the best staff who understand the Cornerstone experience and offer superior service; along with a variety of merchandise, quality product and a range of prices, all displayed in an inspirational setting that will keep customers returning and telling their friends about their experience. Services such as gift wrapping, on-floor store assistance and expanded hours of operation are a must in today’s environment; however, that is not enough. Also key to the Open House success is the guest line up – which has ranged from artists and authors to

Artists and authors provide personalized gifts, vendors offer specials and giveaways, designers share holiday decorating tips, and the store hosts children’s activities, offers treats refreshments, drawings, goody bags, and more. The annual event draws over 12,000 customers over the two weekends.

In September 2003, Deon and Liana Jordaan bought the noisy Pêreltjie Nursery School. In January 2004, they demolished the first walls to convert the property into a guest house. Originating from Potchefstroom in NW and Springbok in NC (Boesmanland), the couple’s very different ideas resulted in a combination of construction and décor themes, still evident in the establishment today.

Their initial idea to create a unique and different guest house, had to flow through every aspect from the branding to the entrance gates. They were still sweating in the middle of the night and were toiling to leave their own mark on the guest house - from buffing original Oregon pine floors to gathering reeds for the ceilings - to welding burglar bars to the making of ‘Dai-Heka’ Endless enquiries, quotations and consultations later - they realised they would have to make the huge steel framed gates themselves. This was a daunting task to say the least, but many late nights and couple of accidental burns later, they finally designed and assembled the three gates.

Conversations later started with - ‘when are those gates finished’ – ‘wanneer kom dai hekke’ - meaning that when the gates are up the guest house is ready for opening. They started calling the guest house ‘Die Hekke’, but it ended up being called ‘Dai Heka’, deriving from the Boesmanland (Springbok) slangdialect.

On 1st September 2004, Dai Heka (those gates) opened to welcome a honeymoon couple from Welkom. On the 15th September that year, in a hype of activity the first bride dressed and stayed over with her family. In early October 2007, Dai Heka was registered into its current holding company under the ownership of Keith Jordaan. The new management team decided to keep improving and opening ‘Dai Heka’ to visitors and guests alike.

Catering to Your Needs Bailey’s Backyard is an American farm-to-table restaurant, based in Ridgefield, Connecticut. As the winner of LUX Best Fine Dining Restaurant 2017 - Fairfield County, we invited the owner Sal Bagliavio, to profile the firm’s evolution from its inception in 1999 to the present day.

Bailey’s Backyard offers full service catering for weddings, corporate events and communions. Bailey’s Backyard opened in October 1999, in what was a closed-down coffee shop. The mission then, as it is now, was to offer refined, new American cuisine in both a polished and relaxed atmosphere.

The next logical step in the popular restaurant’s evolution – taken in spring 2013 – transformed it into a true farm-to-table restaurant. “In June 2016, I held a whole staff workshop called the client journey-8K business boost. The fundamental aim was to educate staff about the ‘Michelin-Star’ standards that we need to have across the entire salon to ensure each time a client visited, he or she would have the same consistent high-end experience. Since then, to reinforce the points outlined, I have given training to our receptionists so they answer the phone; greet clients and so on, in the same way each time. This improvement in efficiency at reception has been noticed by our clients.

“In addition, to monitor consistency and quality control across all branches, we have implemented a mystery shopper who reports their findings directly to management who can then use this information for staff appraisals.”

Ruksher then offers additional thoughts on the firm’s staff.

“For any new team members, I have established an induction programme so they understand the unique procedures and protocols that are in place at Pastels Salon and the importance of adhering to these. New staff members are also taken through the salon’s standard operating procedures and the client journey.

“Positive feedback and formal appraisals are now

Within the wider health, beauty and wellness market, Ruksher underlines the trends the firm is currently experiencing and how they adapt around these.

“We have experienced three major trends recently.

Firstly - express appointments - with their busy lives, clients do not have endless time to spend in salon.

Therefore, we devised a series of express packages where hair, nails and beauty grooming treatments can be done in tandem to minimise time spent in salon.

“The second is a more natural approach. Many of our clients have made a shift to treatments that have an organic focus. This has led us to introducing several treatments and products from organic brands including Eminence Organics and Tan Organic.

“The third is drastic colour changes: Many of our hair clients are willing to be more experimental when it comes to hair colour, requesting pastel hues, platinum blonde etc. But one of our missions is to keep hair strong and healthy. Therefore, we introduced INNOluxe, which is a hair colour additive that allows you to push the boundaries of hair colour, without compromising on the hair’s health.”

The firm employs technology to ensure that clients enjoy the best possible experience and service, Ruksher reveals.

“We have a dedicated in-house social media expert who can answer any queries that come via our social media channels and who can interface with existing and potential clients, as well as any third-party businesses with whom we may wish to collaborate.

“In terms of booking software, we send out emails and SMS to clients to ensure they do not miss booked appointments. We are currently considering developing online surveys for our existing clients to assess their experience and attain valuable feedback to ensure that we can meet any demands they have and exceed their expectations.”

Looking to the health, beauty and wellness market, Ruksher foresees several developments which she goes on to explain.

“Finally, I have worked hard to forge a reputation in Dubai as a leader within the hair industry, as well as a prominent female business woman. This has been reflected in the fact that I have been featured in many articles within the past year, including a profile in Khaleej Times, as well as several articles in trade publications such as Beautypolis Arabia and Professional Beauty.

“For this year’s Professional Beauty event, I was invited to be a guest speaker and to give a presentation on the Wellness Initiative we introduced to motivate staff; as well as participating in two panel discussions in my role as Professional Beauty Ambassador. I have also been shortlisted as a finalist for the EIDEAL-Santi Business Leader of the Year award, the winner of which will be announced in Autumn 2017.”

Finally, Ruksher shares her future hopes and prospects for the firm.

“Now, we are renovating our flagship salon to ensure it is completely refurbished and provides an even better experience for our clients. In June 2016, I undertook a year-long leadership programme called the EIDEAL-Santi Business Leadership Program.

“Delivered by renowned business mentor, Susie Santiago, the unique programme offered salon owners the chance to develop their leadership skills, manage their time and resources, plan for strategic success, developing improved operational team work and excellent customer service, to give them an edge over their competitors. For the next few years, the focus will be on putting the new systems from the programme in place. I have no doubt it will be a lot of hard work but once it is completed, it will be fabulous.”

Practice Makes Perfect The Healing Space is a holistic health practice based in Devon. Hilda Kalap, its founder, has just won Holistic Therapist of the Year 2017 – Devon Award as part of the magazine’s LUX Health, Beauty & Wellness Awards.

We interviewed her to find out what her practice offers.

What does your business do?

The Healing Space is a holistic health practice based in Devon. I established my practice two years ago, and offer a range of natural therapies designed to unlock the body’s ability to heal itself. These include nutritional advice, massage, reiki, Eden Energy Medicine (EEM) and Emotional Freedom Techniques (Tapping). I offer sessions in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), nutrition and EEM remotely via Skype/Zoom etc.

Who are your clients?

My clients vary. At one health centre in Totnes, Devon, I offer a morning of donation only sessions per week and these start at £14 for an hour. People who can’t afford natural healthcare otherwise tend to book these sessions.

In my private practice at another health centre, again in Totnes, I see clients who are able to afford

the standard rate for complementary health. I see a range of people including people working for large and small corporates, retired people, NHS employees and self-employed businesspeople. I have seen many health conditions in my clients including hormonal issues, stress and anxiety, depression, back problems, cancer, fibromyalgia, tinnitus, addiction, chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

there are long waiting times to access the former interventions – so things seem to need to be at crisis point before that happens. I believe there needs to be a real re-think as to the kinds of treatments available to patients with mental health issues and a wider palette of options made available in the community, before things reach a crisis point.

What makes your firm unique?

I work with clients - adults and children - either at a natural health centre or in their home - providing consultations and complementary health sessions in several therapies. My focus is largely on nutrition and energy healing. I have also worked with organisations to provide stress reducing health therapies to employees in the workplace. One past client was Bristol City Council.

It is a powerful, effective healing modality, working with nine interrelated energy systems in the body and it is still relatively new on the Continent. Additionally, I speak good conversational Russian and French, so I am focusing on improving my language skills, so I can offer consultations to people in these countries.

What is the biggest challenge facing your firm today?

My greatest challenge is to educate my clients about EEM, because it is such a new form of energy work in Europe, addressing nine energy systems in the body to harmonise energy flow. Practitioners use a technique similar to kinesiology to test energy flow in the body’s meridians, muscles and organs. In EEM, I teach clients a simple five-minute daily energy routine, which helps to address energy blockages and unlock the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

This routine, along with other techniques, empowers my clients to take more responsibility for their own health.

Another challenge is getting a therapy such as EFT accepted by organisations, such as the NHS. EFT has had many research studies vouch for its benefits in helping with issues such as addiction, trauma and phobias. However, it is still to be recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which would make it more readily accepted by the NHS and lead to more funding for this type of therapy.

Now, much of mental health treatment relies on psychiatry, psychology and medication. There are of course side effects with the latter - and often

What is the main aim of your business?

I would also like the opportunity to offer my therapies to schools. For example, I know that EFT can help with exam stress. I am also planning to run more online courses next year, on topics such as nutrition and how to achieve a work/life balance as a working mother.

Within your sector, what developments do you foresee and how will your business be adapting around them?

I see people using mobile apps more often to book their appointments. I think people will become more aware of taking personal responsibility for their own health, so they will try to find ways to prevent getting ill, such as having massages for stress management or learning EFT to help build mental resilience. I would like to train further as a Life Coach to help people really reach their full potential in life.

The municipality of Velingrad is a town in Pazardzhik Province, Southern Bulgaria. It is in the best part, the western, of the largest mountain in Bulgaria – Rhodopes. It is situated in the valley of Chepino, at altitude of 700 to 1800 meters. It is at 135 km from Sofia and at 81 km from the second biggest city of Bulgaria, Plovdiv.

The main tourist product is the balneo tourism - the small villages of the region develop the ‘rural tourism’ – which is much appreciated by any foreign visitors.

Dose of Relaxation Villa Vuchev is a luxury villa in the Western Rhodopes. As winner of the special Luxury Holiday Villa of the Year 2017 – Bulgaria award, we interviewed the company’s owner, Nikolay Vuchev to learn more about the luxury that this establishment affords for their exclusive customers.

“The geothermal field in Velingrad is the largest in southern Bulgaria. The total flow of the sources is 160 l/sec. There are sources of mineral water (80 in total) and the mild climate and beautiful landscape are the main wealth of the town. Velingrad is one of the largest spa complexes in Bulgaria and on the Balkan peninsula. That is why it has been unanimously chosen to be The Spa Capital of the Balkans, with its many sanatoriums, spas and modern hotels.”

Villa Vuchev was put into operation and received state certification in September 2014, Nikolay tells us. He then furnishes us with the details of the villa’s design, it’s soothing hot mineral pool and the vital role that staff play in the success of the of the company.

“The design of the villa is exclusively made by a famous Bulgarian designer. The villa is in the spa capital of the Balkan, the City of Velingrad and has an inviting hot mineral pool which will provide you with the necessary dose of relaxation and it will help you forget any form of stress. The villa also has at its disposal a sauna and a jacuzzi, which make it a suitable choice for a complete spa vacation during all seasons.

“The staff of Villa Vuchev will take care of your comfort, which is why regardless of the number of guests during your stay, other guests won’t be allowed in the villa. The executive director of Villa Vuchev, is Mr. Ivaylo Nikolov, who has been a partner and director of several successful restaurants in Sofia.

The staff of the villa is made up of seven seasoned professionals, all of whom have a professional education in the hospitality sector. Between them, they speak several languages which are English, German and Russian. Additionally, the villa is in the high price segment, so it only serves VIP guests.

“When selecting staff, the professional training of each is of the upmost importance to us. At the beginning of each business day, we always recall our corporate values. In the villa, we have developed and implemented a system of quality control. The personal attitude towards each guest is only a part of the high-level of service we provide.

“The first thing that every guest encounters in our villa, is the smile of the staff, as well as the impeccable cleanliness and the perfect design.

We have a tradition in welcoming guests, with a refreshing drink, accompanied by fresh seasonal fruits and homemade biscuits.”

Now that the market is highly saturated with suggestions, Villa Vuchev is trying to show something that is both authentic and local. Nikolay adds his thoughts on how the company uses technology to support their work and always aims for sustainability in terms of the energy and food that are consumed on the premises.

“The Rhodopes are mountains with a 1000-year history behind them. Once we saw and felt the spirit of this mountain, we always wanted to go back there.

While we are constantly improving things here, the experience we have gained during the past three years has helped us to clear up the even the smallest of mistakes.

“We strive to use environmental technology compliance, for example, we heat our villa with a geothermal plant, solar energy and LED lights that do not emit carbon emissions. We also use biodegradable cleaning and preparation materials.

We only buy eco-products from this region, for the food we prepare and we strive to preserve the beautiful nature that surrounds us.

“The food products used in Villa Vuchev, are all handmade, for example fruit juiceS, jamS, natural honey, lamb from eco farms, cheeses, sausages, homemade yoghurtS, special kind of beans (Sofenka), Rhodopen mountain herbal tea, mushrooms (the Boletus variety), special varieties of red wines, rosé and much more. A Continuity of Care Nielsen Clinic provides homeopathic medicine, acupuncture and counselling. After their success in achieving the Best Holistic Health Centre – Calgary, as part of the LUX Health, Beauty & Wellness Awards, we interviewed the clinic’s Dr. Vijay Nielsen to discover more.

Nielsen Clinic first opened its doors in Calgary, in 2005 providing homeopathic medicine, acupuncture and counselling. Dr. Vijay Nielsen has been practicing in Calgary, Alberta since 2005.

Dr. Nielsen approaches his patient’s health in a collaborative approach both, with doctors in house and physicians from other clinics. He goes on to expand this point, adding the reasons why their clients choose them, as well as his thoughts on both homeopathy and integrative medicine (IM).

While most clinics have a user fee (either yearly or monthly) to access after hour care, Nielsen Clinic does not believe in charging additional fees Dr. Nielsen explains. He also turns his thoughts towards the wider industry at present and how this impacts upon the clinic’s work.

“We view our clients as a community, so we do not want to put up barriers for them to receive the best possible care. I think that if my client is investing in their own health, then I can help meet their needs in this regard by taking a part in their wellbeing, when they are in need.

“Our clients have access to me via email after hours, as this helps them get the attention and help they need for their conditions, without having to wait till the clinic is open again. So, our philosophy is simply to forget the extra charges, because we already have enough of that in our world.

“In terms of the wider industry, I would say that medicine is always changing. There is a perspective that integrative medicine is based on ancient principles.

A Safari Experience of a Lifetime Botswana Footprints has a base in Maun, Botswana and offers lodge bookings, safaris, mobile camping safaris and self-drive bookings for clients who want to explore the surrounding countries. To mark this accolade, we interviewed the owner, Tara-Lee Flory to learn more about the amazing experiences they offer.

Botswana’s uniqueness in the abundance of protected wildlife and habitat, offers a safari experience of a lifetime. The history of Botswana is characterised by migrations of peoples into the country, from the north and west and particularly from the east and south, as well as internal movements of groups of people.

Tara-Lee then explains to us the fascinating origins of the Tswana tribes, in her own words.

The owner, Tara-Lee Flory of Botswana Footprints is keen to begin the interview by painting a picture of the region’s history, including details of the first inhabitants who settled there. The group which eventually emerged as most numerous and dominant, were the Batswana, she tells us.

“In Botswana, about 1,000 years ago, large chiefdoms began to emerge in the area between Sowa Pan and the Tswapong Hills. Large settlements developed on hilltops. These people are known as the ‘Toutswe’, after the first of their capitals, which was excavated on Toutswemogala Hill. Soon, these communities were eclipsed by the Great Zimbabwe Empire, which spread its domain over much of eastern Botswana.

“Their pattern of dividing and migrating saw the formation of numerous Tswana tribes and their eventual occupation of all areas of the country. The term ‘Batswana’ refers to the ethnic group of people who speak the Setswana language and share the Sotho-Tswana culture and while in its common contemporary usage, it refers to all citizens of the Republic of Botswana, regardless of their ethnic background. The singular is ‘Motswana’: a citizen of the country. ‘Tswana’ is used as an adjective - for example ‘Tswana state’ or ‘Tswana culture’.

“Around 1300 AD, peoples in present-day Transvaal began to coalesce into the linguistic and political groups they form today. This resulted in the emergence of three main groups: the Bakgalagadi, the Batswana and the Basotho, each of which had smaller divisions. Each group lived in small, loosely knit communities, spread widely over large areas of land. They spoke dialects of the same language and shared many cultural affinities.

“The earliest modern inhabitants of southern Africa were the Bushman (San) and the Hottentot (Khoe) peoples. They have lived an almost unchanged lifestyle in the country since the Middle Stone Age. The physical characteristics of the Khoe and the San are similar. Both tend to have light, almost coppery skin colour, slanted, almond-shaped eyes, high cheekbones, thin lips and tufted and tightly curled hair.

Both speak click languages, though there are major differences between them. Both hunted and collected wild foods, but neither grew crops.

“Approximately 60,000 years ago, the peoples of Sub-Saharan Africa were of one tribe, probably of Khoe/San type. It is believed that the Bantu-speaking people were an offshoot from the Khoe/San tribe.

This occurred in the tropical rain forests of equatorial Africa about 10,000 years ago. The Bantu-speaking people gradually developed darker skin pigmentation

“Two central features of the history of the Batswana are fission and fusion. Groups of people broke off from their parent tribe and moved to new land, creating a new tribe and absorbing or subjugating the people they found there. This is how a single group of Batswana living in the Magaliesberg mountains, in northern Transvaal evolved into the numerous Tswana tribes, which exist today.

“In the 18th century, further movements and split-ups of the Batswana resulted in the Tswana tribes which exist today: Bakhurutshe, Bangwato, Bakwena, Bangwaketse, Bakgatla, Batlhokwa, Barolong, Batlhaping and much later, the Batawana. The earlier farming inhabitants of Botswana - the Bakgalagadi - also split into several groups, namely the Bakgwateng, Babolaongwe, Bangologa, Baphaleng, Bashaga and many smaller groups. This then was how the Tswana tribes came to be living in Botswana, as they were until about 200 years ago.”

“Providing a clean and comfortable dining experience is paramount to us and the standards in our kitchen, are regularly checked by the environmental health department.

“Our Head Chef, Stuart McPherson has worked across Europe and trained under some eminent chefs, including one who had a Michelin star. His passion to produce exciting dishes, that use the finest local ingredients, is really getting us noticed. Our drinks list offers the best that Scotland produces and we sell gins, beers and whiskies that are produced only a few miles from Brea. “Strangely, offering fresh local Scottish food and drink is not commonplace in Scotland. There are some excellent eateries doing what we do, but the marketplace is made up with many convenience food outlets and restaurants serving cuisines from other parts of the world. We set out, with Brea, to use local ingredients, sell local drinks and showcase some of the best that Scotland offers.

“Not only is this good for the environment with less delivery miles, it is good for the Scottish economy - through working with local producers - as well as showing that Scottish cuisine is something that is among the best on offer.

“As an independent restaurant, we have the luxury of knowing our team members personally and both the owners work directly within the team on a regular basis, to ensure that every little detail and standard is adhered to.

Rob then directs the conversation towards the restaurant’s prospects, including what might be on the horizon for them.

“Brea are continuing to make a name for ourselves in Stirling, by striving to be the best restaurant in the city.

There may be a time when it is right to open a second Brea somewhere else in Central Scotland, but now we are in very early stages with our plans.

“The market is ever-changing and there is always new competition, but Brea will just stick to our own principles of trying to offer the best local food and drinks to the customers, by showcasing Scotland’s larder and we are sure that this will continue to be a hit!”

Rob ends the interview on a note of optimism, by detailing the restaurant’s seasoned experience and the awards they have won.

Helen Mary Perkins is a gifted and highly-respected complementary therapist, with an in-depth understanding and knowledge specifically of Bowen Therapy and reflexology. Her career path has taken her from family-run beauty salon in the eighties, to award-winning entrepreneur, via the Australian outback where she worked in often challenging conditions within the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Helen especially enjoys training and inspiring the next generation of therapists and is one of just 12 registered instructors in the UK, accredited by the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia to teach the original Bowen Technique, as developed by founder Tom Bowen. She has also developed several unique training programmes that have been accredited by the relevant professional bodies.

Easy to use at home, they offer effective relief from injury and many everyday ailments.

Thanks to Helen’s efforts, they are now used by a variety of professionals, including Bowen therapists, reflexologists, physiotherapists and

other complementary practitioners to enhance treatment. Bowtech Ease, originally developed by an Ayurvedic practitioner in Australia to relieve bunions, was subsequently found to be equally effective at relieving pain and inflammation on all joints. This aromatherapy oil has been recognised with three awards since 2015, including this one from LUX! Helen comments on the firm’s online business: “The website enables us to reach a much wider audience to raise awareness of the benefits of these products which are natural, safe and effective. At the same time, we are mindful of ever-changing European legislation to ensure we remain compliant with all relevant rules in areas like packaging and transportation. One example, is the sending of liquids overseas, by air. This adds an extra layer of complication for the wider health, wellness and beauty industry, but reliable courier companies are well-placed to advise so it is not really a problem.”

Staying ahead of the competition Helen has developed her own method of reflexology which she calls the Reflex Resonance Technique™ (RRT), combining intuition and sound. This was inspired in part by her time in Australia, where she explored the age-old beliefs of the indigenous Aborigine people, for whom sound and healing go hand in hand. This experience, which also saw her working in often primitive conditions in the Outback within the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), inspired her to follow her own instincts and ultimately led to the creation of RRT. Furthermore, she has developed a training course teaching this method to other reflexologists, who wish to enhance their skills and offer an additional service to their own clients. This unique programme has been independently accredited by several professional bodies, pushing back the boundaries as she guides students to harness the intuitive powers that have been ignored or largely forgotten in the hurly-burly of modern life. In recent years Helen, has been invited to present this fascinating method at international conferences in South Africa and Australia.

She has also developed a specialist two-day training course - for Bowen therapists wishing to learn more about working in the palliative care sector – as well as an introductory course for people who may be considering becoming a Bowen therapist. Helen’s palliative care programme has attracted the attention of the medical profession and is being considered by the NHS in England.

Wider industry trends In today’s fast-changing world, Helen says the biggest trend is the demand for a fast service, both in the form of questions that need actioning from all communications such as Facebook, telephone and text and orders from all over the world that need to be processed. “Some postal services are notoriously slow and certain courier companies are careless and slapdash which keeps us on our toes in terms of customer service,” said Helen.

Both Helen and her PA keep their smart phones turned on, to check orders coming in and their communication consultant is alerted, when questions need to be answered. Careful packaging of products is vital for orders, that might be mishandled, and a special cool pack is used for hotter country destinations, to ensure goods arrive in good condition.

Regulations and legislation Voluntary regulation of the complementary therapy sector helps to maintain standards and protect clients. Helen’s specialisms, Bowen Therapy and reflexology, are among a wide range of therapies covered by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, which has government backing

through the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care. The industry’s professional bodies also remain alert to any changes that might impact members and provide practical support as necessary.

While this is voluntary at present, there are some specific areas governed by more stringent requirements, as Helen explains: “One example applies to those of us who work in the field of palliative care. Recently, I was privileged to be asked to contribute to an advisory document presented to an NHS hospital palliative care unit as part of their review of guidelines for the use of complementary therapy, such as Bowen in the treatment of patients facing end-of-life care.

“I firmly believe that maintaining professional qualifications, combined with experience and ongoing CPD (compulsory professional development) training, puts therapists in the very best place to respond to any changes in legislation or regulation.”

Developments in the health, beauty and wellness market Quite rightly, there always seems to be the need for evidence-based scientific facts, which can help maintain high standards. However, training, wider choice, referrals and testimonials for products and services will by popular demand ensure the industry continues to thrive. The team is also well-placed to meet the growing demand for natural health and beauty products.

Helen says: “In a world where technology seems to be king and we hear more about developments

in artificial intelligence (AI), I am encouraged by the growing interest in a more natural approach to keeping ourselves healthy and well. The healing power of touch, combined with listening skills and emotional interaction, be it one-to-one or in a like-minded group during training or a speaking engagement, will hopefully over-rule computer programmes in a future where machines may perform many tasks which we humans carry out today. A robot carrying out a massage? I don’t think so!”

Future developments Helen is exploring opportunities to raise further awareness by supporting therapy centres, at home and overseas, who already stock and use their products and wish to develop their retail offering.

Posters and other point-of-sale materials can be supplied to help them grow their customer base, as well as build their therapy business, while having the added benefit of buying local. She is also considering supplying a slightly larger roller ball, alongside the popular 10ml bottle, for use on larger areas to relieve soreness on the neck, back and shoulders, or calf and thigh.

Making Yoga User-Friendly As part of the LUX Health, Beauty & Wellness Awards, the UK based company Stamford Yoga was very fortunate to win two prestigious accolades.

The first was the Best Yoga Studio – Lincolnshire and the second was the LUX Excellence Award for Private Yoga Tuition – UK. To celebrate these successes, the firm’s director, Marcus Parr took time out to speak to us about his work as a leading yoga teacher in the Peterborough area.

Stamford Yoga was established in 2014, by Marcus Parr-Black, who has been a been a leading yoga teacher in the Peterborough area since the year 2000.

As the interview kicks off, he tells us about the firm’s background before it opened its doors for the first time.

“I was teaching originally (since 2000) from a smaller studio near Peterborough offering mainly private tuition, with the addition of two public classes at a couple of other locations in the Peterborough area.

“A couple who I used to teach contacted me one day, to invite me to see a building that they had acquired that had studio space. I wasn’t looking to expand at the time, but went along to have a casual look.

However, when I walked into the room I was taken aback. It was a beautiful room, with lots of light and characterised by typical Stamford architecture. I had visited other yoga centres and thought that maybe the same could be created in Stamford. So, I gave it a go!

“My aim was to offer classes seven days a week at various times and to have a selection of teachers to choose from, plus to also offer pilates. I interviewed and selected a few teachers to join me, so in September 2014 Stamford Yoga opened its doors for the first time.”

Specifically, within the health, beauty and wellness sector, Marcus reveals the services the firm offers plus how they mark themselves out from the competition.

“We offer yoga and pilates classes for all levels, on a public and private class basis. Thai yoga massage is also offered by one of the teachers. We hold monthly workshops for more in-depth study, often with visiting internationally known teachers.

“We have made yoga user-friendly. For example, we offer many themes such as yoga for flexibility, yoga for strength, yoga for abs, yoga for stress relief, morning stretch, yoga for beginners, yoga for a strong and healthy back, lower body firm up and so on. The themes are many. This approach has really worked and the schedule changes weekly, to keep it interesting and varied.

“The fact that we offer classes throughout the day and evening, really suits people who cannot commit to the same time each week. We also have a social group, which currently has over 130 members. We have regular meals out and visits to local concerts.

So many friendships have been made in this manner.

Our emphasis is on being a down to earth and friendly studio, where people feel the warmth, as soon as they walk in. We have many laughs!”

Marcus then reveals how the firm always aims to provide the best possible service for their clients. He also offers his opinions on the staff he employs in the business.

“All our teachers are well qualified and have a good deal of experience. I personally have been teaching for 17 years. We all attend regular workshops and further our training as much as we can. We use an online booking system, which is one of the best in the world for studios such as ours. This has really made a difference to both the ease of the business and client satisfaction. We offer many money saving packages and memberships to help those who want to attend regularly, as economically as possible.

“My staff are brilliant at what they do and are very easy to manage. I like them to bring their own personalities and styles into their lessons. I trust their knowledge and basically let them get on with it! In this way, clients can then try all of us and then select the teacher/s they gel with the most.”

tells us how his firm is adapting around these, plus he offers his thoughts on potential future developments within the wider yoga industry.

“Stamford is quite a health-conscious town. It is a place where many people take pride in their health and fitness. In that respect, it has been a good place to quickly gain clients and to get my business off the ground.

“In terms of legislation, there isn’t a mass of regulation out there, but generally training in yoga has upped its gear, so new teachers have a fair amount of knowledge behind them when they start.”

“Looking to the health, beauty and wellness market in the future, one thing I have noticed is that an increasing number of people are interested in nutrition and what food goes into their mouths. I see a steady trickle of people trying veganism. I myself have gone more towards veganism since last year, having been a vegetarian for 30 years. Some of my lovely students often bring me vegan treats such as cakes and biscuits which are often homemade! It certainly beats just eating an apple!”

In closing, Marcus explains what the future has in store for Stamford Yoga Ltd. “Basically, I feel I am still in the ‘building stage’ – gradually acquiring a greater base of regular visitors.

I spend a lot of time advertising on social media and sharing photos of everyday yogis and yoginis, achieving great things with their dedication.

“Facebook and Instagram posts have brought many new students to the studio. However, the greatest gatherer of students is through word of mouth. We have the seal of approval also from three osteopaths who come to the studio for lessons themselves and who recommend their patients to us.”

“My firm has been in business since 1988 providing clients with interior design services from space planning to the last accessory. We work on a fee plus percentage of the cost of goods. My own responsibilities include all the business decisions for my design firm. Designing and overseeing construction plans, furniture plans, all interior finish selections, rugs, fabrics, window treatments, color schemes and trouble shooting. I am involved in every aspect of every project.”

Regarding herself being awarded and selected as a LUX Leading Designer 2017, Cheryl is thrilled. She explains how exciting it is to know that across the globe, people are seeing and recognising her work. It is always rewarding for anyone, particularly designers, to see their work acknowledged in other places.

“Being honest, I am very pleased and honored to be selected as a Lux Leading Designer 2017. For me and my firm, this honor gives us credibility, exposure and hopefully, more opportunities to design and execute beautiful projects.”

Attributing long hours and hard work to her success, Cheryl also believes it is her own unique designs and the different ways in which she approaches the projects and clients which make her more successful.

Embracing any challenge that comes her way, it is clear that no job is too big or too small for Cheryl and her firm. Following on from her unique designs, Cheryl also details how she ensures her designs are innovative and will become the most sought after within the industry.

“Long hours and hard work are definitely required to be successful in any business. By nature, I am curious, work quickly and love a challenge. Every design project is unique requiring different ways to approach solutions.

“Concerning my innovative designs, I believe people are attracted to projects that are not only beautiful and innovative but also a place where they would like to live. Maybe not the total project, but enough that they call me to help them with the interior design of their project.”

Keeping all staff happy and working towards the same goal is important in running a successful business.

Cheryl keeps a small number of staff as this enables her to contribute personally to each project which goes a long way in achieving client satisfaction. If a client is dealing with the head of the company, then they will feel comfortable about their projects being handled with duty and care.

“Within the company, I keep a small staff because I want to be involved in every aspect of each project. I have wonderful help for different areas of my business and we work together to find resolutions to problems.

I treat my staff as I would like to be treated.”

Giving us an overview of the design industry currently, Cheryl discusses the challenges that the firm has faced and will continue to face. Drawing on her previous experience, Cheryl explains that she will continue to search and looking for solutions and resolutions for any challenge or issue, and overcoming challenges has strengthened her determination to have patience and understanding when working with clients.

“Challenges that have strengthened your company values. Our industry is more respected and utilized than ever before. People are busy and do not have time to search for items to furnish their homes and understand the value of hiring professional interior

designers. There are many challenges on each project whether it is ground up, renovation or interior furnishings but experience has taught me to continue searching and looking for resolutions. Professional interior designers are inundated with information about new products, colours, trends. It is less difficult to find products because there are so many websites for products.”

Essential to creating success within the design industry, Cheryl believes that designers must prove every day that they are valuable additions to projects, showcasing their talents and highlight the fact that they provide great value. The company adapts to any changes, as discussed earlier, and Cheryl is constantly working hard to stay positive and keep herself motivated, even when things go wrong.

“Interior designers must prove every day that we are valuable additions to every project. Keeping up with changes, laws that affect our profession, doing what you say you will do in a timely manner creates success. When something goes wrong on a project and I feel bad about it, I can get depressed and lose sleep thinking of ways to make it better. I just keep going and things work out.”

Looking ahead, Cheryl tells us where she sees her company, Cheryl Van Duyne, in five years’ time and what her future aspirations are. She wants to continue to take projects that stretch her design capabilities and help her grow as a designer.

“The clients who hire interior designers are innovative, successful and interesting people. They come up with amazing projects and we are given the opportunity to use our talents, experience and knowledge to make these projects come to life. It is difficult and hard work, but nothing is more fulfilling than looking at a finished project and seeing your visions come to life.”

A Passion for Interior Design R. Webb Interiors is a nationally recognised design firm based in Richmond, Virginia, where a staff of experienced and talented professionals, including interior designer, architects, artisans and craftsmen specialise in both residential and commercial interior design. Following their success in winning the LUX 2017 Leading Designers – USA Award, we interviewed the firm’s founder Rodney Webb to learn more about his passion for the art of interior design.

No matter what the project type, they always seem to bring a unique aesthetic to the design, the firm’s founder Rodney Webb tells us. He develops this point and describes his own role in the firm – adding how it feels for them to have won the prestigious LUX 2017 Leading Designers – USA Award.

“I have found that with an ever-changing industry such as interior design, that taking the classic approach vs the trendy approach is always a winning strategy. Trends come and go which is why I root my designs in what I know is a constant.

Rodney then reveals the secrets behind the firm’s success and how he manages his seasoned team of staff.

“Our design team has an overwhelming ability to listen to its clients’ verbal design vision and translate that into a visual design for their space creating a sensory adventure for the client in the process.

“I believe that the key to my success has been branding! I’ve worked extremely hard at building a recognisable brand that’s known for luxury interior design. In building this brand, I had to ensure that on every project, that I exceed my client’s expectations.

“To be successful in this industry, you must have an eye for detail! The details can be the defining line between a good and a great design. I am constantly called into spaces where the homeowner feels that ‘something’ is missing in their space. Typically, the bones of the room are good but the design overall is lacking lustre. Bringing in the right accessories and colour often is the key! Then at other times, we all conclude that they should have called me in before they purchased the new furniture. What can I say, it happens!”

“With an insatiable passion for the art of interior design, I founded the R. Webb Interiors Design Firm in 2002. As the principal interior designer, I personally meet with every one of our clients. This is extremely important because it helps me to get a sense of who my clients are, as well as to understand what their design needs are. Throughout the process, I work closely with both the client, as well as the design team to ensure that the client’s style and personality are reflective in the design.

“When I received confirmation that I was selected as the LUX 2017 Leading Designers – USA award, I was completely honoured. I felt so blessed to be recognised for something that I love to do. From my very first design project at 15 years of age when my mother allowed me to work on the redesign of our kitchen, I was completely hooked. I’ve always put forth my best on every project that I’m fortunate to be a part of and it’s an amazing feeling to be recognised for it.

“My firm, as well as myself are completely honoured to receive this award. The firm does what we do because it’s our passion! One of the firm’s goals for 2017 was to seek international opportunities and to gain exposure in the international marketplace. LUX

“I am not a micro-manager but I do stay involved in my staff’s day-to-day activities to ensure that all is running smoothly and efficiently. The key principle that I adhere to with my staff is to always treat them with dignity and respect. At R. Webb Interiors Design Firm, we are a family and I treat my staff as such. I attend weddings, graduation celebrations, funerals - all the things that a regular family does. I want them to know how much I appreciate their support of my vision.”

Rodney then provides his expert insight into the interior design industry today, how the firm keeps up with the wider trends and remains successful.

“The interior design industry has become a hot commodity. We’ve evolved from an industry where people hired us out of need, to an industry where people hire us out of want! I would like to thank HGTV for that! The everyday family is inspired by what they’ve seen on a show, resulting in more and more of them reaching out to interior designers to assist them with making their dreams a reality! As a business owner, I am constantly faced with challenges. What I’ve learned is that it’s not what comes my way but how I respond to it.

In closing, Rodney explains how he keeps himself motivated, plus how the firm ensures that their products are innovative, as well as his thoughts on the future for R. Webb Interiors Design Firm.

“Every day, that I’m designing is enough motivation for me! I absolutely love what I’m graced to do and I never take this for granted. I live and breathe design and my clients are the beneficiaries of my labour!

“Knowing your customer base is a key factor in the success of your products in the market. I listen to what my customers want and raise the bar; thus, exceeding their expectations. I’m careful to provide what they want and not what I want!

“What’s next? I’d love to transition to the world of television with a new interior design show! For years, my client’s, friends and family have been telling me that the world needs to see what we’re doing and I couldn’t agree more! In the next five years, I see R. Webb Interiors Design Firm as a household name and inspiring the everyday family in their quest of creating their dream spaces one room at a time!”
