Located in the heart of the idyllic island of Bali Indonesia, Biossentials Chantara Wellness & Spa has managed in less than a year to rise up the ranks to be one of the most sought after five star rated day spas in Sanur, Bali. We invited Founder, Joanne Bruce to tell us more about this relaxing retreat, revealing to us how they have amassed such great success, in such a small window of time.

Continuing the theme of relaxation, the Spa Koh Chang Resort is a health destination spa resort located at the serene Salak Kok Bay, on the Eastern side of Kohchang Trat Province, Thailand. Our visit to Mondrian Doha began in style, with a Business Class flight on Qatar Airlines, travelling to this stunningly designed, fabulously equipped idle situated in the heart of Doha.

Featuring 211 bedrooms and 59 suites based over 24 floors, the region’s very first ESPA, and a spectacular 2000 square metre ballroom with its own 24K gold elevator, Mondrian Doha redefines lifestyle in the city, offering a glimpse into true luxury and decadence.

On arrival, we are greeted by the attentive staff and shown to a glorious room, which has been individually decorated and offers us a truly spectacular view of this gorgeous city. The designs are modern but offer a glimpse into traditional Qatari style with beautiful carpets and additions such as lamps and curtains. Each room offers a range of stunning views of the waterfront; from Lusail City and the magical island called The Pearl to West Bay, and we marvel at the beauty and splendour as we relax and unwind, knowing that staff are on hand should we need any assistance.

Design-forward features include a Desert Dune sculptured carpet, a marble tiled bathroom with a 3D walled exterior and custom-crafted accents, like a Swarovski chandelier above an artificial stone bathtub, making for a truly luxurious experience.

The establishment boasts a myriad of exceptional facilities, including a beautiful and indulgent spa which is the perfect place to be pampered in style.

Each room offers a range of stunning views of the waterfront; from Lusail City and the magical island called The Pearl to West Bay, and we marvel at the beauty and splendour as we relax and unwind, knowing that staff are on hand should we need any assistance.

ESPA at Mondrian Doha features separate spas for men and women, 12 treatment rooms, including a private couples’ treatment room, a heated experience garden, relaxation rooms with heated daybeds and a traditional Turkish Hammam, the first of its kind in the city. With a spacious set-up, the spa is ideal for couples or groups of friends to relax and bond in peace and tranquillity. The rooms are simply yet comfortably furnished and relaxing, and the trained therapists are constantly on hand to meet any need and administer rejuvenating treatments.

Alongside the spa there is also a selection of top of the range gym equipment, for those who simply cannot interrupt their fitness routine.

What was truly impressive was the range of exceptional restaurants that the hotel boasts, ensuring that any tastes were catered for. We were blown away by Chef Masaharu Morimoto and his world renowned modern Japanese cuisine.

Signature omakase and the finest sushi, along with Japanese Wagyu beef, are all provided at this gloriously beautiful dining establishment. Inspired by ancient Japan and a key landmark in the city of Nara, Morimoto is adorned with energetic and graceful artworks by Japanese painter, Hiroshi Senj, and this shows in the plating of his food; delicate yet robust, each meal leaves us feeling completely sated and suitably astounded.

For those who prefer a more western dining experience, CUT by Wolfgang Puck also makes its debut in Qatar, bringing the finest quality beef and an extensive menu with both Californian and Mediterranean culinary influences. The clean lines in this modern restaurant are punctuated by intricate, artistic touches and the incredible “floating staircase” which offers a great experience.

We dine on perfectly cooked meat and sumptuous fish that combines the very highest standards of ingredients with bold seasoning to create an exceptional meal that we will never forget.

When we craved a tender burger, we headed over to Hudson Tavern, a traditional American style bar which serves juicy burgers topped with decedent melted cheese and perfectly cooked

fries. The open kitchen heightens the anticipation as we eagerly await our meals, marvelling at the old-fashioned furnishings which lend the tavern the feel of a traditional speakeasy film.

Although we adored the other restaurants, we were fascinated by Middle Eastern cuisine, and we were not disappointed in Walima, the hotel’s traditional restaurant which boasts the very best in Qatari and Middle-Eastern cuisine. The décor was unbelievable, with traditional pottery and lanterns adorning the ceiling, whilst the sofa style seating made for a relaxed yet refined meal. Sumptuous dishes were served by the friendly and approachable waiting staff.

Although we sat inside and drank in the atmosphere, the outside terrace is home to traditional Arabic tents, where oversized Shishas can be enjoyed as the sun sets over West Bay Lagoon.

When we became peckish and went in search of a snack, we were delighted and surprised to find out that New York’s iconic Magnolia Bakery, serving up freshly baked cupcakes, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, banana pudding and more, is featured in the lobby of Mondrian Doha. We loved sitting in this pristine white café and indulging in rich, flavourful coffees and tasty sweet treats.

The décor was unbelievable, with traditional pottery and lanterns adorning the ceiling, whilst the sofa style seating made for a relaxed yet refined meal.

There really is something for everyone at the new Mondrian Doha, as we discovered when we found the establishment’s nightclub, Black Orchid, which has a modern and fashionable décor, a beautiful dance floor which is always brimming with excited revellers and a great selection of music to get you in the mood to party. Surrounded by gold-framed mirrors, two bars and an oversized DJ booth, Black Orchid is the place to be seen and see Doha from a perfect perspective, and only the most fashionable and tasteful party goers frequent it.

For a more subdued night out sipping cocktails in the evening sun, we were taken to Rise, the hotel’s glorious rooftop bar. Located high on the 27th floor, offering spectacular views of the artificial island the Pearl, West Bay, and Lusail City, Rise takes after the famous Skybar in Mondrian LA. Inspired by the phenomenal colours of the sky, Rise’s hand-painted glass dome as its roof, fills the room with magical hues throughout the day, as we looked down on the pool area and admired the phenomenal crystal chandeliers hanging from above. The dancefloor comes alive at night, and the still waters of the pool reflect the dancers as they soak up the atmosphere.

With such fantastic facilities and great staff who looked after us from arrival through to our return flight, it is no wonder that we adored every moment of our stay at the Mondrian Doha and are already planning our return trip.

Georgian Grandeur and English Heritage This month LUX had the pleasure of staying at The Arch London, a luxurious 82-room boutique hotel located in Great Cumberland Place.

Named in the TripAdvisor 2017 Travellers’ Choice Awards as one of the UK’s top 20 luxury hotels, we were keen to see what all the fuss was about.

Independent and family owned, The Arch London offers an intimate laid-back sanctuary amongst the hustling, bustling London streets. The hotel is very much a feature of the local neighbourhood and spans seven Grade II listed townhouses and two mews homes.

Perfectly positioned to accommodate guests travelling on business and pleasure, the hotel is an ideal north-but-central London base. For connectivity, the hotel rests within easy reach of the A40 and Euston, Paddington & Marylebone stations. For those after quiet reflection; the urban oases of Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill are just a short stroll away. And as well as the usual central London spots, it’s a great base for exploring a little further out.

All the rooms showcase luxury fabrics, wallpapers and amenities. We were lucky enough to enjoy the comfort of an Executive Junior Suite and in addition to more space, the suite gave us an in-room sitting area with lovely city views, an ensuite bathroom with a large soaking tub and TV, a complimentary soft drink mini-bar and gorgeous Malin & Goetz beauty products.

The service is immaculate yet understated; the concierge team, check-in and waiting staff were equally attentive and being independent they have a bit more flexibility to offer above-and-beyond

services that guests truly appreciate. They have a unique dog-friendly policy which extends to providing luxury fur-lined dog beds, specialist canine menus and fur and body wash! There is a full-purpose gym exclusively for guest use and there are two specialist drink lounges, one for champagne and one for martinis; of course, we had to sample both!

Hunter 486, the hotel’s aptly named restaurant is a nice little throwback to the 1950’s Marylebone dialling code. The menu centres on seasonal, modern British cuisine and it does this exceptionally. It was quiet as we sat down to eat, however we’d just missed the rush of the early show-going diners, taking advantage of the popular theatre menu.

The stunning design journey continues into the restaurant and the open plan kitchen meant that we were entertained as we waited, watching the chefs prepare our meal. The restaurant window looks out to one of those classic London mews streets, a nice reminder of our location. It’s a relaxed and romantic setting for dinner and drinks alike.

Head Chef, Gary Durrant crafted the menu around classic items such as Fish & Chips, simple yet effective! There are a range of menus to support the hotel’s various clientele; private dining, set menus, afternoon tea, bar and buffet food and a quirky bowl food menu offering a unique take on tapas.

It was clear from our short visit that The Arch London is getting it right. There is no shortage of excellent hotels in London, however here lies a superb team, an outstanding venue and a little bit of the ‘je ne sais quoi’ that despite best efforts, can often be amiss in the competitive world of hospitality.

Creating Luxurious and Distinct Interiors Wade Allyn Hallock is a Miami based designer whose boutique firm has been creating distinguished interiors for 20 years, as well as designing homes for some of today’s top celebrities in both the movie and music industries. We invited Wade to tell us more about the success of Hallock Design Group.

With a diverse range of projects from Resorts to two-bedroom condos, the team’s imagination and creativity are limitless and certainly not confined to a particular style or period. Wade adopts a unique approach to design, combining a mix of sophistication, luxury and timeless sensibility.

One of his main beliefs is that design reflects the world in which people want to live, and that it is a genuine honour to be able to create these environments for his clients.

Possessing a wealth of experience himself, Wade tells us what he believes are the best attributes contributing to excellent and unique design. He talks about going the extra mile with clients, working closely and collaboratively, helping develop innovative projects with each client.

Wade outlines the Group’s approach to working with a new client ensuring that the outcome will meet the needs of all parties.

“When I meet with a new client to take on a project, it is vital that I understand their needs and vision. I typically ask them to provide visuals and images to express their ideas, so we can be sure we are all using the same point of reference. It is paramount for me, both personally and professionally, to capture and expand on the vision and create a unique design for my client. It is one of my strengths as a designer and something I take great pride in.”

Establishing itself as the leading interior design firm within the industry, is important to the growth and viability of Hallock’s success; Wade mentions the fact that he believes it is his versatility which marks him as the best possible option for clients.

“Essentially, I believe what sets me apart in today’s industry is my ability to be diverse in my design.

I have created modern, traditional, contemporary and many other styles for both my client’s homes and commercial projects. We spoke to Judi Kieffer to find out more about the successful design firm who were recently awarded ‘LUX Ones to Watch for 2018: The Most Innovative Designers’.

Judi tells us what qualities make for excellent designers, which attributes contribute to the making of successful design, and what lies ahead.

Firstly, what defines a great Designer and Leader?

“Great designers are always being challenged, inspired by various lifestyle industries for trends, and usually possess inspiration in addition to being a fantastic listener and collaborator, coming to the table with solutions and not problems. Additionally, I believe a good designer should elevate the project with fresh approaches and ideas, be

Providing budgets during design is also warranted as well as timliness and honest communications. I think designer’s vision, client’s goals, and management/operators implementation plan all should be cohesive. Over deliver on touch points that give lasting impressions and be motivating and engaged throughout the process.”

What elements make a successfully designed interior?

“Spaces which move one’s soul as they inhibit the space, and to allow individual to be more engaged and elated, stimulating their emotions,

enabling them to feel less stressed and hopefully evoke good emotions. Designed spaces that are residentially comfortable yet commercially wearable and usable, designed for the life safety and welfare of the public. I also think that wellness elements and intuitive technology is vital and should be inclusive of any environment anymore.

Well thought out lighting in multiple levels and uses from ambient to task creates mood and emotions.

Also, don’t forget proper Feng Shui and balance as it creates good energy flow. When a visitor is in a space and can’t pin point what it is exactly that makes them feel so good and the space to be visually appealing - that is truly a successfully designed space., because good design encapsulates all the elements together!”

With regards to the team at KDG, how do you and your staff stay on top of the design trends?

“I love to attend events and tradeshows around the country, and follow fashion and technology trends.

Traveling and being open to new inspiration aides in my quest to come up with innovative designs for interior projects. Also, I love researching Biomimicry, in which new products are created that solve problems based on how nature would do it.”

What is your process for undertaking new clients or projects?

“It is important to ensure that the outcome of the project will meet the needs and requirements of both the client, guests or residents. Initially, we host a kick-off meeting with consultants, clients and partners, and share the roles each person will play and the overview of the project. Next, we set up the communication process and discuss what to expect throughout the project. As a team, we are proactive in our work, constantly communicating and adapting to the progress of the project, trying to predict what will happen, rather than reacting.”

Where Goals and Desires Become Inspirations and Solutions

Looking ahead, what are some future vibrant markets?

“Essentially, I think the industry is very strong right now, and most likely for the next several years in renovations, new construction and rebranding. Over the next few years, in hotels, there will be more focus in select service, mid- upper scale, and soft brand properties. In Multi Family developments, they will be focusing on more Luxury “destination” and “lifestyle” design. Tenants want more flexibility in housing with no responsibility, high quality design, high technology and amenities on the premises, complete with cafes, bars, markets, laundry, sports fitness and even dog spas.”

How did you start your firm and what lies ahead?

“I started my business in 1990, with the encouragement of an architect and designer friend whom I collaborated with on a famous resort in Idaho. They believed in me and let me share office space to get started. I have never looked back and wake up every day with gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead, I am living my career passion!

After possessing a business and interior design degree and a professional licence in NCIDQ, I have gained a lot of insight and experience that I bring to every project. It has proven to be very helpful to our clients and my firm in general. I like to come from a thought process that not only can spaces and design be engaging with high style, but also from an owners’ perspective of increasing the bottom line, and keeping guests coming back and tenants remaining longer. As KDG has grown, we have gained a position as a Preferred Design firm with Hilton and IHG hotel Brands as well as being approved with many other brands. We are quick and creative thinkers, and I believe we are successful at designing any style and with any trend, in any area of the world. I think what sets us apart, is our ability to successfully combine our expertise in hospitality , commerical and luxury residential, and blend them together in the design.

Additionaly we create for the property and location of the project, and always bring in local art, artist or elements that really showcase its community.”

Finally, where do see your firm going and what’s in store in the near future?

“Moving forward, I would love to expand both our design and procurement departments, and design more wellness minded projects. This stems from not only my personal lifestyle (I am a certified yoga instructor and Ayurveda nutrition advocate, so I embrace the wellness lifestyle), but I found that the general public is also very knowledgeable and chooses better healthier lifestyle choices too, so responding to this in design is in essence a sustainable act!”

CoolSculpting uses the fat freezing technology of Cryolipolysis. Fat-freezing is an effective method of eliminating fat cells without the need for surgery or needles and with no harm done to the surrounding tissue and skin.

Among its many services and programmes, the Spa Koh Chang Resort provides the famous fasting for cleansing program based on Dr. Richard Anderson’s philosophy. The programme promotes fasting for cleansing purposes. The three main programs are a 3.5 day semi fast, the 7 day full fast and the 7 day anti candida, each designed so that clients can select the best programme for their health and lifestyle.

20 architects, interior designers, technical and administrative staff who are responsible for the running of the project on a daily basis. The project manager and key personnel remain on the project from its beginnings in design development through occupancy, to completion and follow-ups. Aspects such as servicing the client, schedules, budgets, document accuracy, and total accessibility are major parallel paths alongside of design and not put into secondary roles.

Yoshie Takeo is an innovative designer based in Hong Kong. We explore what makes her one of LUX Magazine’s Ones to Watch for 2018: The Most Innovative Designers.

Yoshie Takeo’s design journey began when she was studying Environmental design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong.

Driven to deepen her knowledge of interior architecture, Yoshie pursued her Master’s in Interior Architecture & Design at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Graduating at the top of her class, Yoshie quickly gained recognition taking first place in the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute Mobile competition. Yoshie’s winning concept was adopted benefiting the Autism community in Philadelphia becoming the first mobile autism unit to provide testing and diagnosis for under-served communities. The project was widely reported in The Philadelphia Tribune, Metro Newspaper, and The Triangle (Drexel University Newspaper).

Additionally, Yoshie was also awarded the “Best of thesis” within the MS IAD program at Drexel; the project won the International Design Award for “Emerging Interior Designer of the Yearstudent.” The award recognizes those who have demonstrated devotion to elevating the art of interior design. Yoshie’s work has been published in the IDA Book of Designs, and distributed to museum bookstores nationwide along with promotion in newsletters and on the IDA website.

Designers should be free to tackle any project type regardless of their experience.

The thesis project marked Yoshie’s capstone of the MS Interior Architecture & Design program, but also showed her exemplary design. Yoshie’s thesis investigation explores the neural plasticity of the human brain. Yoshie discovered that creativity was a result of the neural network allowing our ideas to wander freely, collide and find new connections.

The idea that this neural network can be nurtured and enriched through exercising our plastic brain is expressed in a new model of institution- the Neuro-Creativity Center. This solution embraces the fundamental neuroplasticity of our human brains. The Center bridges the gap between creativity and neuroscience in an innovative and dynamic built environment. The goal is to have diverse groups of people challenged via a vast array of creative outlets balanced with areas of meditative respite- all housed in a space designed to transform its inhabitants on a sub-conscious, neural level and to ultimately be a vehicle for their personal and creative brain expanding journey.

Yoshie successfully communicated her research, developing an unconventional and unique solution recognized by jurors and faculty.

Fundamentally, Yoshie’s Thesis project serves as her benchmark of excellence. Possessing a strong work ethic, personal drive and passion towards developing creative solution -Yoshie’s work surpasses expectation with sophistication and flair.

Her approach to design is creative and inventive without succumbing to the trends of the times.

Since finishing her studies, Yoshie has worked in both Hong Kong and the United States based projects involving: hospitality, residential and commercial spaces. Also, she earned the LEED AP ID+C credential after completing her masters.

Drawing on her vast experience, Yoshie transcends conformity, creating designs that inspire others. In her philosophy on design, Yoshie believes that, “there should be no boundaries or restrictions when design is expressed at an elevated level. One should be daring and unafraid to challenge existing connotations in order to break away from what seems impossible. It is like art, where creativity, personal style and aesthetics can be expressed. Through her designs, she hopes to create solutions that are beautifully functional and yet emotionally thought provoking”.

Each project is a new opportunity to experiment and push the client’s comfort zone. When one has a vision and passionately believes, then anything becomes possible. A recent office project involved clients that were afraid to step out of the traditional office mindset- but yet they wanted to transform the office into a complete open office design.

Having close interaction with the client, Yoshie created an office that delighted the clients with positive feedback. By slowly shifting the client’s traditional ideas on office design, the end users were ecstatic with the outcome not only because of the unconventional design approach, but by doing so under fast track scheduling and difficult budget constraints. Yoshie’s first professional office project is a testament to her ability to create beautiful works using her hospitality experience.

Ultimately, the design industry pushes interior designers to narrow themselves to such categories as hospitality, residential or commercial spaces and work years to gain experience in that focus.

Interior design should not be thought of as separate fields, but instead as a whole. Designers should be free to tackle any project type regardless of their experience. Experience can make a designer more skillful, but not necessarily a better designer. Possessing an individual voice and vision is what people will notice. No matter how big or small - if a design is compelling, people will take the time to observe. Unsatisfied with being categorized, Yoshie Takeo tackles each project with a unique perspective and solution. Unafraid to try something new, Yoshie strives to be a trailblazer. Yoshie wishes to create works that nobody has thought of and thus set the standard.

Yoshie believes designers have the power to conjure up anything and that very creation has the ability to impact society and people’s lifestyle in positive ways. This can only be done through thoughtful and innovative designs, which underlie all of Yoshie Takeo’s projects.
