Introducing Michael Shaw
Introducing Michael Shaw
How does one go from finding work at the Royal household to founding a bespoke lifestyle management firm which caters to the needs of the wealthy? We spoke to Michael Shaw, founder of luxury lifestyle consultancy Franklin, to gain some insight into assisting the world’s elite. Michael entered Royal service back in the early nineties, and made the most of his time observing and learning from the world’s most illustrious household – a period he remembers with great fondness. While a certain confidentiality prevents him giving too much away, he is more than happy to elaborate on the invaluable insight he gained into the skills required to excel within private service.
decided to launch a company catering to those exacting needs in a unique and bespoke fashion. After spending a career rubbing shoulders with the likes of everyone from Royalty, dignitaries, and world leaders to entrepreneurs, sports players and rock stars, Franklin was born in order to offer an unprecedented level of meticulous and seamless service to the global elite.
Based at Buckingham Palace, he regularly accompanied the Royal household both on trips to Balmoral and on foreign engagements – including one of the last official voyages on the Royal yacht Brittania – which imparted valuable knowledge on how to execute the most complex of arrangements with discretion, efficiency, and perfection. Yet perhaps surprisingly it was the expertise gained on fine antiquities that he holds most dear, acquired through tending to priceless national heirlooms.
Michael’s uppermost aim is to bring better working practices to private households and fight the slipping standards encountered even amongst staff of the UHNWs. For example one family required him to aid them in reining in a staff member who felt it necessary to wear a gun whilst cooking. Another came to Franklin because, while cleaning, their staff had inadvertently caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to a priceless antique rug. Having to sort out at huge cost the repair to a fine French Aubusson rug is a great example of why the correct training is so key.
After leaving the days of protocol and formality behind, Michael built on this expertise working for some of the world’s wealthiest families and individuals, employed across multiple countries in yachts, mansions and private jets. Embarking on various roles around the globe he tended to the varied needs of the super-wealthy. Working for the UHNWs has obvious benefits – from fast cars to fine restaurants – and is a lifestyle which you can become accustomed to in a rapid fashion. Yet to him there was still a constant niggle that a gap in the sector existed; for a service that offered a simple, one-stop location for all lifestyle needs of the super-wealthy. Thus, after more than 20 years of personally managing the lives of the global elite, he
Michael has seen it all, and thrives on the fresh challenges each day presents. One client will fly on only one model of private jet, and never in one more than 6 months old – but it’s an undertaking he accepts with relish. There is simply no average day to be expected, with tasks that could range from hand-selecting and interviewing butler candidates for a client in the morning, to supervising the hand-painting of a bespoke bed frame in the afternoon. Franklin is designed to remove the everyday niggles that affect the lives of the super-rich, allowing them to maintain a focus on the bigger picture and concentrate on growing their businesses, or simply enjoying all that they have created.
Staff placement is another area Franklin take seriously, aiming to reduce staff turnover as much as possible by placing great emphasis on matching the needs and personality of the client with that of the candidate. If, for example, you place an employee uncomfortable with change with a client liable to last-minute decisions, this will almost inevitably end in a failed match and unwelcome disruption to the client’s busy life. When his clients purchase a new or additional home, he will oversee everything from hand-picking and training the new staff, to managing entire teams of architects and designers brought in to make sure that from the moment clients step through the door a home runs exactly to their expectations.

A selection of bedrooms, junior suites and studio suites as well as one, two and three-‐bed apartments – most of which benefit from a private entrance on Clarges Street or in the case of the Townhouse, a private entrance on Half Moon Street – are now finalised. The elegant bedrooms are decorated with a nod to the glamorous 1930’s, with shades of bronze and soft greys, along with bespoke furniture designed in silver stained fiddle-‐back Sycamore. The feel of each bedroom is serenely calm and restful with timeless detailing and quiet luxury. Celebrity artwork from renowned photographer Andy Gotts MBE, who has shot the likes of Harrison Ford, Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue and Robert De Niro, adorn the bedroom walls. For the ultimate break, book the top floor penthouse suite, which sleeps six, and

During this stage the hotel will again remain fully operational. Retreats - Turning Dreams into a reality
Flemings Mayfair has appointed Henrik Muehle as the new General Manager of the privately owned boutique hotel in London. Founded in 1851, the 129-room luxury property is one of only a handful of family-owned hotels in the capital, as well as one of the oldest. Joining from the five-star St James’s Hotel and Club in Mayfair, where he oversaw the successful operation of 60 guest rooms and suites as well as the Michelin-starred restaurant Seven Park Place, Henrik brings with him over 20-years industry experience. Prior to St James’s Hotel and Club, Henrik worked with Éric Chavot for seven years at The Capital Hotel London, which earned two Michelin-stars. Tasked with taking this leading SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World) boutique hotel to the next level, Henrik will oversee every aspect of the management of Flemings Mayfair, which includes the refurbishment of the hotel, suites and apartments that occupy twelve interconnecting Georgian townhouses, as well as a complete overhaul of the restaurant and bar. His role will focus on repositioning the hotel to the luxury market, raising the overall guest experience and improving the service levels. Drawing on his considerable knowledge of F&B, a particular emphasis will also be placed on the development of a new restaurant concept and a destination bar for 2015. “It’s hugely exciting to be part of the next phase of evolution for Flemings Mayfair. A series of upgrades and redesigns of the apartments, suites and rooms and a brand new concept for the restaurant and bar next year will put Flemings Mayfair firmly back on the map. Taste - The Reinvention of the Tobacconist
Roll Up, Roll Up 1A St James’s offers sought after and newly discovered cigars for the most demanding cigar aficionado and is the place to explore the world of fine and classic tobacco taste with the help of a knowledgeable team. BAT UK Limited’s exciting venture 1A St James’s, a world-class specialist tobacconist in Mayfair, opened in January 2014 and has been described as ‘the reinvention of the retail tobacconist.’ UK cigar expert Robert Emery leads the team at 1A St James’s. He says that “1A St James’s offers a refreshing change from the traditional tobacconist and cigar retail specialist: we know that many people who have recently discovered a love for cigars are looking for a different style of service. They want to be able to walk in, relax and feel confident that they are getting the benefit of real expertise and established heritage, in a welcoming and informal environment combined with a modern yet refined setting”. This site has a one hundred year history in worldclass tobacco products and the 1A St James’s store offers a contemporary space to explore tobacco blends and fine cigars. Situated in what used to be the Cocoa Tree Gentlemen’s Club, 1A St James’s offers a cigar sampling lounge; a humidor room housing one of London’s rarest selection of fine cigars; a wall of private humidors, a Master Blending room, and a range of quality tobacco accessories. In this ethos, the store hosts adult-only events where, for example, cigars purchased can be paired with cocktails created exclusively by a mixologist. Store features 1A St James’s has a state-of-the-art Humidor room, stocked with an extensive collection of the finest and rarest cigars from around the world. For those who want to maintain their own cigar collection at 1A St James’s, there is a wall of personal humidors. Adult consumers are able to add their name to the waiting list The Cigar Lounge is available for adult tobacco consumers to sit and enjoy a sample of a cigar, relax with friends, or just unwind in refined surroundings.
Robert Emery is available to discuss taste preferences and suggest complementary alternatives to explore at the request of individual consumers The Master Blending Room offers a hosted experience where the finest tobaccos can be seen, handled and smelled up close to discover the aromas and learn about the art of blending upon request. With over 30 years experience in the fine cigar industry, 54 year old Robert Emery is one of the world’s leading experts in the field. He is a natural explorer, which has taken him around the world in what has become a bid to uncover the finest of what he seeks. Emery comes from a long line of British fishermen and was the first generation not to go into the family business. Instead, at the age of 16, he joined a company making and exporting briar pipes. By the age of 21 he had left the UK for Australia. Upon his return to the UK, he took a job at a small cigar shop in London Wall and was manager within a year. In 1987, he left to take up a position at JJ Fox Retail, the largest UK specialist cigar retail group, where he eventually became the UK Director.
With his industry wide network of strategic partners, contacts and colleagues, Emery’s recent venture, The Cigar Consultant service, was a unique body that offered informal advice on anything from cigar selection, to building a profitable cigar business. Throughout his career Emery has visited the plantations and factories in his search for the finest tobacco, forming strong relationships with the growers and all those involved in the chain to the UK market. Passing on his knowledge and skills of the industry has always been an important part of his mission and, to this end; Emery holds regular cigar seminars and general training sessions at 1A St James’s, as well as passing on his expert advice to individual adult customers at the store upon their request. His passion for discovering the world’s finest tobacco is at the forefront of everything Emery does. His role at 1A St James’s means that he is available to share his passion with adult tobacco aficionados who visit the new store, and with those who are at the start of their journey of discovery into the world of fine tobacco.
In 1997, Robert’s loyal business earned him the accolade of being the Grantee of a Royal Warrant to the Late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, for services in supplying cigars to Clarence House. “I was told that on her birthday one year she opened our invoice thinking it was a birthday card - ‘What’s this? An invoice on my birthday!’” The Warrant was granted soon after. In 2007, Emery was named the UK Cigar Retailer of the Year, and during his rich career history has been Manager of the Harrods Tobacco Department and Director of Tor Imports -a leading cigar importer. Emery is Vice Chairman of Association of Independent Tobacco Specialists and has an active involvement in the hospitality sector.

Shark Encounters What could be more luxurious than enjoying some of East Africa’s most untouched coral reefs on a tropical Tanzanian island?
Situated on the East coast of Africa, below Kenya and above Mozambique, Tanzania is renowned for its areas of vast wilderness, safaris, tropical islands and marine parks. Parts of the Tanzanian coast are prime locations to spot the biggest fish in the sea: whale sharks. These gentle giants are generally around 8-11m long in Tanzania, but can reach up to 18 metres in length and are breath-taking to behold. Despite their immense size, these harmless creatures feed largely on plankton. Wilderness travel company Aqua-Firma Worldwide, the prime sponsor for whale shark research on Mafia Island off the coast of Tanzania, offers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with these incredible creatures by joining an exclusive research tour led by some of the world’s leading whale shark researchers, Dr Simon Pierce and Dr Chris Rohner. These safe and responsible encounters are focused on exploring areas where upwellings bring food the whale sharks feed on to the surface. Aqua-Firma Director, Ralph Pannell, says: “We have enjoyed some wonderful and long encounters with whale sharks here. Each day is different, but we have swum with as many as seven whale sharks at a time. What makes this location particularly special is the sheer beauty of the location. Mafia Island has a verdant shoreline and beautiful offshore sand islands we can walk on for a break in our search for whale sharks.” Mafia Island does indeed combine beautiful beaches and hard coral islets with extensive areas of mangrove. You can feel very detached here from mainland Africa amongst lovely islanders whose dhow sailing boats paint a beautiful picture against the islands’ varied coastline. For added indulgence, guests can upgrade to luxury lodge accommodation during this trip. Researchers have been monitoring whale sharks for several years now off the west 24 LUX - July 2015
coast of Mafia Island and sightings have been consistently good across the northern hemisphere winter. The team is often in the water with several sharks at once and might see two or three of them while flying into and out of the island during peak periods. Guests on this expedition would have the unique opportunity to assist in the marine biologists’ research, which is a humbling and awe inspiring experience. During the day, they might spend unforgettable moments snorkelling alongside whale sharks and taking photos to record spot patterns which are used by the researchers to ID each shark. Whilst whale shark interactions are the core of this experience, Aqua-Firma has also incorporated a full itinerary of diving for qualified divers on reefs on the opposite coast of Mafia. These lie within an 821 square kilometer Marine Protected Area, parts of which are afforded complete protection from fishing. This means guests can dive amongst incredibly healthy fish life and might even come eyeball to eyeball with large numbers of huge groupers and snappers. In other coral reef locations around the world, these fish would have long been destined for the cooking pot! Snorkelling trips can also be arranged for those who do not dive. In addition to whale sharks, guests can experience a hugely diverse range of marine life from hundreds of species of fish, huge sponges, and coral to protected Green and Hawksbill turtles across kilometres of Marine Protected Areas. Combining beautiful coastline with expansive beaches and protected reefs, these trips are perfect for guests who want to explore the fascinating marine diversity of Tanzania, whilst learning from the world’s leading experts in the field. As well as visiting this ocean paradise, a tailor-made safari is the perfect add-on to this trip. Aqua-Firma can operate bespoke trips tailored perfectly to clients’ needs, both
overland in 4 wheel drives or by flying directly into and out of remote reserves. To experience the best of Africa’s marine life and terrestrial wildlife, consider joining a small group or privately guided safari, which will go in search of The Great Migration. The Great Migration brings more than a million grazing wildebeest, zebras and Thompsons gazelles into Africa’s most famous plains of the Serengeti. This remarkable phenomenon is largest migration on earth. The Serengeti is the ultimate foundation of many North Tanzania Safaris - undoubtedly one of Africa’s wildlife viewing highlights, the celebrated location is featured in countless documentaries such as Big Cat Diary and The Living Planet. It derives its name from the Maasai word siringet which means “endless plain” - a term which, at 14,763 square kilometres, it well deserves. Throughout the year, the Serengeti thrives with wildlife, providing excellent opportunities to see prides of lions and spotted hyena in clans of up to eighty strong. Plains game animals including giraffe, buffalo, warthog and antelope such as eland, impala, oryx and dikdik can be seen at any time. There are also healthy populations of leopards, side-striped and golden jackals and cheetahs, as well as 520 species of birds. These safaris also goes in search of tree climbing lions and monkeys of Lake Manyara; and the bountiful wildlife of the unique Ngorongoro Crater. Lake Manyara National Park may be small but contains one of Africa’s highest concentrations of elephants. Dense bush and tree cover in this park make for a very different game viewing experience. The lake itself is rich in algae and, in turn, this attracts large flocks of flamingos. Giraffe, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest focus their grazing on open areas of the lake, whilst lions lurk amongst the trees waiting to attack a grazer which strays within range. Staying on an escarpment high above the lake, guests will be rewarded with excellent views across the lake at sunset.

Ngorongoro concentrates game (and visitors) into the largest volcanic crater in the world. The physical geography of the location is breath-taking and the ecology varies between open grassland, swamps and tall woodland. It is very easy to spot game here and it is also common either to see kills or see a pride of lions feeding on the night’s kill; by midmorning packs of hyenas and jackal will take over this feast. Lakes provide habitat to hippos whilst grasslands are home to the increasingly rare Black Rhino, best seen in the dry season when grasses are shortest. Safaris are operated year round and, if privately guided, can be tailored to perfectly suit the individual’s wishes, adding in locations such as the elephant empire of Tarangire; or missing out some elements to focus on the Serengeti for longer. Clients on a private safari will stay in a luxury lodge and be driven by their own local expert tracker and guide in a specially adapted four wheel-drive Land Cruiser complete with cooler, lifting roof and electric chargers onboard. Those who would prefer to be even closer to nature can request private luxury tented camps to be set up for them rather than lodge accommodation. Guests on a private tour can target exactly what they want to see and choose their ideal balance of relaxation, comfort and adventure. Places are available on Aqua-Firma’s Mafia Island trip from 7th – 15th November 2015, from £1,890 (excluding international flights). 10 scuba dives can be added to the package at a cost of £295. Drive - A Unique Performance
A UniquePerformance Bentley is taking its fusion of luxury and performance to new extremes with the launch of the Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series. This exclusive series is limited to just seven cars, each inspired by one of the seven Breitling Jets. Renowned for their precision, speed and daring, this summer the Breitling Jet Team will be performing across the United States and Canada in a grand tour of epic proportions. To commemorate this spectacle, Bentley’s Mulliner division has re-imagined the Continental GT Speed to mirror the distinctive look of the Breitling Jets, fusing extreme customisation with immense speed. The exterior is painted in a striking duo-tone split of Hallmark and Onyx with highlights colour matched to the exact Pantone of Breitling’s unique Yellow, reflecting the trademark look of the L-39 Albatros Jets. This bespoke colour theme is continued on the interior, with unique sculpted seats featuring accents in Breitling Yellow. Taking customisation to new heights, each car is individually numbered and corresponds to one of the seven Breitling Jets. The dashboard’s carbon fibre fascia panel displays an image of the seven planes in their signature Avenger flight formation, with the corresponding jet highlighted in Breitling Yellow. Similarly, Mulliner has matched the hide and thread to Breitling’s signature yellow and designed a series of logos and graphics for the headrests that highlight the number of each car and the jet that inspired it. The tread plate plaques are also individually numbered.
The series will debut at the Boeing Seafair Airshow on 31st July in Seattle, where the Breitling Jet Team is performing. The key for each car will be handed over to its owner by the corresponding plane’s pilot, but not until they have experienced a flight in the jet that inspired their car. Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner, said: “The Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series demonstrates the level of customisation Mulliner can achieve for customers. Creating this very special edition has been an exciting experience for the entire team, taking inspiration from the Breitling Jet Team’s grand tour.” Mulliner – Rare by Design Mulliner exists to respond to the requirements of Bentley’s most discerning customers. The specialist division’s Limited Editions reflect carefully chosen and inspirational themes. Individually these might have special significance for customers in specific markets, but what they all share is the highest standards of Mulliner craftsmanship, taking the concept of Bentley luxury and pushing it even further.
Mulliner Limited Editions are rare by design and, as a result, they all have the potential to become instant classics, desired by many but driven only by a fortunate few. Breitling Jet Team The Breitling Jet Team, supported by the independent Swiss watch company Breitling, is the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing in jets. The team is comprised of seven L-39 C Albatros jets that can reach speeds of up to 565 mph and fly within just a few feet of each other. Widely recognized for their precision and seamless coordination displayed throughout high-speed aerobatic performances, the France-based team brings their unmatched flying to North America for the first time, mirroring the quality and precision of a Breitling timepiece. The Continental GT starts at £12,4170 for the V8 and £13,450 for the W12. The GT Speed is a W12-only and steps up to £150,420. Convertible Continental GTs start at £136,360, bouncing to £165,300 for the Continental GT Speed. Pricing for the Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series has not yet been set, but is likely to be in the region of £192,510.

Art - Jacky Tsai
JackyTsai The Fine Art Society is delighted to present the first solo show by the newly signed Chinese artist and designer, Jacky Tsai. Tsai’s work explores the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures and the ways in which they feed and enrich one another, through a range of materials and techniques. A western pop art aesthetic is expertly blended with eastern artistry and the emblems of Chinese mythology through at times absurd tableaus; modern-day western superheroes battle it out with characters from Chinese folk tales; Wonder Woman is wooed by the Monkey King, Empress Wu is saved by Tarzan. The narrative pieces in the show will draw their inspiration from the four great novels of Chinese literature. (Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Dream of the Red Chamber). From the Ming and Qing dynasties, in the 14th - 18th Century, these great heroic stories still form the basis of much Chinese popular culture, from opera to television and are considered to be the most significant stories of pre-modern Chinese literature. At once comical and energetic, there is an undertone of serious political and social debate in Tsai’s works. Borrowing the tropes of 19th century colonial rule and Orientalism and of modern-day racial stereotyping the works reveal deeper questions about the effect of globalisation, capitalism, and the perception of difference in society. Tsai began his career collaborating with the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, creating his signature floral skull motif. Tsai’s training in print, fashion and multimedia has informed his work and technique. He works with a range of traditional Chinese crafts and techniques
dating back 2000 years including woodengraving, cloisonné, ceramic and Suxiu embroidery. These ancient artisan crafts are practiced by an ever-diminishing number of masters in central China, and Tsai works alongside these ageing experts in the construction of his pieces. Despite the masters’ initial reticence about this ‘nontraditional’ imagery, Tsai’s determination is to revitalise these crafts for a new generation and reignite an interest that is waning in his homeland. Since his work with Alexander McQueen, Tsai has continued to work with fashion, debuting his own fashion label where he has collaborated with luxury retail brands such as Harvey Nichols and Lane Crawford.
personify his practice. The pieces will be presented in partnership with Shanghai Tang, continuing a long-term working relationship that has resulted in joint exhibitions and shows in Hong Kong and Shanghai. About Jacky Tsai Since graduating with a Masters degree from Central St Martins in London, Tsai’s work has been exhibited worldwide, with key exhibitions in London, New York City, Singapore and Hong Kong. Tsai is the first Chinese artist to be represented by The Fine Art Society, the oldest commercial gallery in the UK. Born in Shanghai, Tsai now lives and works in London.
In 2014, Tsai collaborated with the luxury Chinese brand Shanghai Tang on a critically acclaimed collection, which launched globally in May 2014. Raphael Le Masne, Executive Chairman of Shanghai Tang commented on the partnership with Tsai: “We are delighted to collaborate with Jacky, as his dynamic style adds a genuine twist to Shanghai Tang’s colourful interpretation of Modern China. We have long been supportive of both emerging and acclaimed Chinese artists, and Jacky’s creations feed the rising global appetite for a lifestyle enriched by Chinese culture.” For the first time Tsai will present the new collection of Jacky Tsai dresses alongside his wall-based artworks as a celebration of his commitment to art and fashion, and an exploration of the many crossovers that

Art - Magic with Meaning
Magic withMeaning We jumped at the chance to speak with English magician and specialist card sharp, DMC.
DMC has rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting and innovative names on the global magic scene today. Heralded by the Observer as “the best in a new generation of British magicians”, and with a loyal fanbase that spans the globe and includes such luminaries as HM Queen Elizabeth II, Andy Murray, Bryan Adams, Jeremy Clarkson and a range of presidents and royalty across three continents, DMC is as popular as he is talented. Already under his belt for 2015 is a critically acclaimed seven-part series, ‘Beyond Magic With DMC’, which captivated millions of TV viewers in over 170 countries worldwide when it aired on National Geographic Channel. Off-screen he is an in-demand, private-working magician with regular bookings at some of the world’s most exclusive events. DMC’s smart, contemporary image and sharp magic skills have continued to catch the eye of a host of internationally renowned companies that are queuing up to sign him for their high-profile corporate campaigns. His recent clients and successes have included campaigns, performances and commercials for Sony, Google, Sky Sports, Virgin, Aston Martin, HSBC, Citroen, Arsenal FC and many others around the world. In addition to this DMC has successfully cemented his status as one of the most prolific and adaptable private-working magicians in the world with his audiences regularly including A-list celebrities, royalty and VIPs. Recent highlights have seen him entertain HM Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister David Cameron, President Ilham Aliyev, Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana of Greece and Denmark, HRH Prince Harry, Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, Jeremy Clarkson, Michael Parkinson, Stephen Fry, Emma Watson, Pippa Middleton, William Hague, Natalia Vodianova, Eddie Jordan, Bryan Adams and many more around the globe. Having createded his 2013 debut TV show, ‘Card Shark’, on the National Geographic Channel. In the one-off special DMC explores the thrilling and high stakes world of card tricks and embarks on an international journey, going from London to Paris with a final destination of Bangkok. Through breath-taking stunts and
street demos, he reveals the secrets behind advanced card play, card cheating and the dark art of card magic. On the back of ‘Beyond Magic With DMC’, which aired in early 2015 and again brought the magician to a global audience, with each episode available in 440 million homes worldwide. In the series, DMC defies natural order and overcomes unbeatable odds with captivating tricks on the streets of London, Paris, Barcelona, Mexico City and Singapore. Inspired by the brilliant minds of Houdini, famed for his sensational escape acts; Karl Zener, known for his work in extra-sensory perception (or ESP); and spoon bending extraordinaire Uri Geller, DMC masters their mind-blowing stunts, offering a few twists and turns of his own in front of live audiences. Behind the Magic - When LUX meets DMC What initaillay inspired you to become a magician/ illusionist? I have always been fixated with the impossible and was fasinated with theoies, ghosts, mysteries and such as a young boy. I was quite an unhappy child and magic opened up a happy place for me, a cave for me to explore my magic as a performance. The second that I learnt to read I found books on boyish mysteries and studied them. I remember going to a magic shop with my father when I was around eight years old. I picked up a catalogue and took it home. The ideas from this helped open up the entrance to my magic. Do you prefer acting out magic or illusions? Honestly, I cannot distinguish between the two. They both open up a wealth of possible meanings. How does your magic differ from others? I began by studying every faccet of what a performer requires and added my own interpretation. Everyone has their own twist, I wanted to explore and go beyond, looking at the context and meaning behind magic.
Why do you choose to showcase your magic while seated at a table? The most important thing about this way of working is that if people come over to the table then they want to see what you have to offer. They are not forced into watching something that is displayed in front of them, this type of mingling magic is something that I find uncomfortable. This way of performing means that my audince can choose if and when they would like to see me perform. What inspired you to create Beyond Magic With DMC? The Natonal Geographic chanel was looking to put together a series and this opened a gateway in which I could cover as many bases of magic as possible. I built a huge range of material which I am very proud of and I drew on every book and trick that I could master so that I could share this with the world. I believe that magic is a language which can offer limitless access to people and places. I wanted to use this show to go beyond just tricks. I wanted to use magic for the means of good. What has been your biggest challenge? The series has been a great challenge in my life, however it has been a beautiful challege. This took over my life for a long time and drew on many daily challeges. What advice would you give to a budding magician? I would tell anyone who has a dream to go for it and make it happen. Just jump and build your wings on the way down, you have to make it work. What are your next steps for the future? I am incredibly fortunate to be living my dream. The next step for me now is to use this to help other people. I am obsessed with India so I am planning to take an element of philosphy and magic over to an orphanage in Delih where I would like to magic some money in front of their eyes for them.

In 2001, ‘time genes’ which orchestrate the different rhythms of cells and modulate more than 20% of gene expressions were identified. During the day, time genes protect our skin cells against environmental aggressors, and at night, they stimulate functions associated with repair to restore damaged skin. As we age, time gene expression diminishes and cells go out of sync and are no longer able to distinguish between day and night. They can’t protect themselves adequately or repair themselves sufficiently, resulting in accelerated ageing of the skin. Skin Absolute reactivates these “rejuvenating” skin genes in order to slow down the ageing process and promote healthy skin functions for noticeably younger skin. Beautiful, bold and black in colour, this amazing formula has a lacquered, voluptuous texture that disappears like magic as it melts into the skin. Skin Absolute is the ultimate universal anti-ageing solution and contains an array of scientifically proven active ingredients to target the four most common ageing concerns: wrinkles, firmness, dark spots and radiance, in addition to reducing the size of pores, which is becoming a new obsession amongst women. Expert of Light works by unclogging and eliminating cells laden with melanin. Acting like a high pressure wash it removes cells loaded with pigments to instantly reveal a “clean” and “clear” complexion. It evens out the skin tone by keeping the melanocytic system in check - the cell responsible for pigmentation and its anomalies. A specialised cell in the epidermis called melanocyte under the influence of different stimuli (gene expression, UV rays, hormones, etc.) produces a coloured pigment called melanin in small vesicles called melanosomes (melanisation). Once they reach maturity the melanosomes are injected into the keratinocytes, and the skin regains its uniform hue. However, over time the transfer becomes less effective - melanin deposits are no longer uniformly distributed, but rather concentrated in a single area. That is when spots appear. To illuminate the complexion and limit imperfections in the skin’s pigmentation, the active ingredients in Expert of Light products act deep down in the heart of the melanocytes to limit melanisation and reduce the transfer of melanin to the keratinocytes. The line also works to maintain a glow and protect the skin as hyperpigmentation cannot be corrected without protection. Once the processes have been controlled with the cells, new irregularities must be prevented from appearing. As UV light is one of the main triggers of melanin production and oxidation, Expert of Light line offers a broad spectrum of protection against UVA and UVB rays. For more than 25 years Valmont has successfully helped to combat the visible signs of ageing. Used by both women and men, its luxury skin-care products achieve ever-lasting results. Jewels - Mysterious Pearls
Mysterious Pearls Tahitian pearls are renowned for their dark, mysterious and enigmatic hues. These particular cultured pearls are commonly referred to as ‘black pearls’, and indisputably reign supreme as the most captivating, provocative and seductive among all cultured pearls. Originating from the breath-taking French Polynesian Islands particularly Tahiti located within the South Pacific, hence the name ‘Tahitian Pearls’. Tahitian pearls are considered to be the second most valuable of all cultured pearls. They are the product of exceptionally large oysters scientifically referred to as ‘Pinctada Margaritifera’, which are harvested from lagoons within the French Polynesian Island of Tahiti. During the 19th century the ‘Pinctada Margaritifera’ oyster was aggressively sought after due to the sheer beauty of its shell. Many Polynesian divers would gather the shells of the oyster, and eventually transform them into mother of pearl pieces. The ‘Pinctada Margaritifera’ is also commonly known as the ‘Black Lipped Oyster’. Its distinctive and unique appearance arises from the colours possessed by the Tahitian culture of pearl, which is black, opposed to other numerous pearl producing oysters which birth pale interiors. The ‘Black Lipped’ oyster naturally secretes a darker pigment which is ultimately responsible for the colour of the pearls formed. As with all cultured pearls, the oyster is nucleated with a small mother of pearl bead within the mantle of the living oyster. The mantle of a living oyster is the organ that produces the brilliant iridescence substance named nacre, for which a pearl is valued. After nucleation, the oysters are delicately suspended into the shallow waters of the lagoon for about 18 months. During this gestation period the pearls gradually form layers on top of layers of the calcium carbonate substance known as nacre, which results
in the formation of iridescent and luminous pearls. Tahitian pearls are commonly described as black, however, if examined closely the pearl’s natural body-colour actually ranges from hues of grey, brown and of course black. The shade of a Tahitian pearl is ultimately dependant on the depth of colour determined by the amount of black pigment the oyster secretes. Their natural body colour ranges within the darker hues, however, Tahitian pearls possess pearlescent overtones covering the entire spectrum of the rainbow, from blue to green to yellow to purple and even pink. Tahitian pearls are available in an array of interesting, original and spectacular shapes, ranging from the classic round, the drop, the baroque and circle pearl. Circle pearls are commonly observed amongst this Tahitian pearls; they possess ridges that form concentric grooves around their entire diameter. Their existence is established due to foreign imperfections, however, these pearls are essentially beloved for their eccentric features.
The common size of the Tahitian pearl ranges between 9mm to 14mm, and possesses an average size of 9.5mm. However, with all cultured pearls: the larger the size, the more expensive and rarer the pearl becomes. The government within the French Polynesia devised a grading system for their harvested Tahitian pearls, in order to maintain high quality exports. This system takes into account various elements of the pearls including their size, shape and lustre. The pearls are then categorised into various quality groups either ‘A, B, C or D’, with category ‘A’ being the upmost highest of quality. Pearls categorised below ‘D’ grade are not permitted for exportation, but instead, are crushed to make a pearl powder. Tahitian pearls; though dark in colour retain the luminosity and brilliance of any other culture of pearl, with the hues and overtones creating a wonderful symphony of natural colours that is theatrical and enigmatic. A dramatic display of sensuality and seduction. Jewels - Summoning the Finest
Masters of Diamonds, Backes & Strauss unveils the Royal ASHOKA Collection, a new line of oneof-a-kind diamond watches bringing William Goldberg’s exceptional ASHOKA® diamonds to the world of haute horlogerie. The Royal Jester - male bespoke watch The Royal Collection, true to its name, features some of Backes & Strauss’ most sophisticated and regal timepieces. They lay bare the essence of Backes & Strauss craftsmanship at its finest and the results are testament to our master craftsmen’s skills. Inspired by the past and brought into the present, they testify to the company’s perennial commitment to elegance, style and luxury.
Backes & Strauss possess exceptional expertise to create bespoke pieces. These master creations feature custom cut diamonds of unique shapes, polished and set to perfection. The outstanding skills of our craftsmen and master polishers offer endless possibilities to creating the Ultimate Diamond Watch.
In days of old, the jester was no fool. A key member of a ruler’s inner circle, his role was considered vital to the smooth running of the royal court, his humorous antics were often seen as the fruit of divine inspiration and his position was one of privilege. He was even required to criticise his master.
The inaugural piece from the collection which was unveiled during the World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie (October 2014 in Japan) is set with no fewer than 92 ASHOKA® cut diamonds, 131 Ideal Cut diamonds and two baguette cut diamonds - making a total of 225 diamonds, one for every year that Backes & Strauss, the world’s oldest diamond company, has been in existence. The total weight of diamonds used in the watch amounts to 26.21 carats.
The Backes & Strauss ‘Royal Jester’ is so named because of its circular theme, in the centre of which a sparkling routine is performed by our very own version of the jester in the form of a single, round, Brilliant diamond weighing above 1.01 carats.
Visitors were truly dazzled by this unique timepiece from Masters of Diamonds Backes & Strauss, which draws its inspiration from the legendary Ashoka the Great, benevolent ruler of India’s Maurya dynasty during the third century BC.
This bespoke masterpiece is now available in a smaller 36 mm version, at the centre of which shines either the finest 0.80 carats DIF colourless diamond or a choice of pink, blue or yellow coloured diamonds.
From the depths of the Hindu Kush to the jungles of Bengal, Ashoka presided over an impressive empire - but, unlike many of his peers, he ruled with love, respect and compassion for his subjects having decided to turn his back on war and adopt Buddhism as his way of life. He spread the doctrine throughout Asia, establishing monuments to Gautama Buddha.
But the magnificent ‘jester’ diamond is not the only amusing aspect of this small and very special line of watches, each of which will be a bespoke piece with a different central stone - choose from the aforementioned, or indulge in courtly colours with a central stone of intense blue, intense pink or fancy vivid yellow. Around the outside of the case, there are a further 80 diamonds weighing 10.50 carats, with the dial being masterfully invisibly set with two rows of baguettes weighing 2.40 carats. Each distinctive timepiece has a single diamond hand set in the crown, the Backes & Strauss signature “Jewel in the Crown”. A further 201 baguettes (9 carats) can be seen between the discreet, crimson hour and minute markers, which are ingeniously mounted on crystal discs to create the impression that they are simply floating, unconnected to any mechanism, in the great tradition of the mystery timekeeper. In reality, they are driven by a superb mechanical movement with 36 hours of power reserve. The Royal ASHOKA - female bespoke watch Empress as Masters of Diamonds since 1789,

The beauty of our diamonds will be accentuated in the magnificent Backes & Strauss timepieces and we are very excited with the launch in Japan as demand for ASHOKA® diamonds grows internationally,” says Saul Goldberg, CEO, William Goldberg. Combining a brilliance for horology and a passion for diamonds, Backes & Strauss is the ultimate diamond watch company. Adding a line of unique timepieces using William Goldberg’s ASHOKA® diamonds was the perfect addition to the world’s oldest diamond company’s Royal collection. “William Goldberg and Backes & Strauss both share a deep appreciation for handcrafted precision and challenging their craftsmen at the highest level. The result of this meeting of masters is a collection of timepieces so intricate they are masterpieces inside and out,” comments Vartkess Knadjian, CEO, Backes & Strauss. Available at the House of Backes & Strauss, 20 Grosvenor Street.
Many hundreds of years after his death in 232 BC, Ashoka’s name was adopted for a 41.37 carat, D colour, internally flawless diamond which was pulled from an Indian mine and cut by an unknown craftsman of unrivalled skill. Such is its beauty, it has been credited with the ability to abolish sorrow and eradicate pain. Inspired by the mystical ‘Ashoka Diamond’, William Goldberg, the legendary Manhattan diamond company, created an entirely new, unique and original cut called the ‘ASHOKA®’ that was granted its very own patent. An elongated, antique cushion cut that captures light and disperses it with a fiery brilliance, the ASHOKA® can only be executed using diamonds that meet the Goldberg family’s exacting specifications - and only Goldberg master craftsmen have the skill, experience and expertise to bring to life the ASHOKA® cut which has 62 displayed facets and rounded corners. Backes & Strauss is proud to have created the Royal ASHOKA® Collection, a new line of one-ofa-kind timepieces which bring William Goldberg’s exceptional ASHOKA® diamonds to the world of

lux Humans have possessed an enduring passion for jewellery and accessories for thousands of years. You only have to gaze at the portraits in the Musée du Louvre, or stroll into London’s National Gallery and discover the breathtaking abundance of jewels and lavish accessories adorning the historical figures of the past to see that this is the case. Whether a piece has been worn for a special occasion, given as a gift to treat a loved one, or used to demonstrate status and power; our love affair with fine jewellery has certainly stood the test of time. Like many of my peers, I was captivated by the stunning antique jewels worn by the Royal Family during their annual tours around the world. This was the first time that anyone had ever really witnessed the vibrant hues of the jewels that many of the Royals wore so effortlessly. Hypnotic blue sapphires, radiant emeralds and blood red rubies were so inspiring that you could almost see the light coruscating from the black and white photographs that these lavish pieces had been captured within. While the allure of shimmering diamonds has always been a central element of fine jewellery, antique royal jewellery also took great care to utilise different coloured gemstones. It was not uncommon to find rubies, sapphires and emeralds included in one piece of jewellery, outlined by a frame of iridescent white diamonds. Antique royal jewellery was the epitome of elegance and class. A combination of the beautiful designs and rich colours complemented the opulent attire of the Royals perfectly. As time went on, affluent consumers coveted the “royal look” and immersed themselves in the same antique jewellery. Regardless of the colour of your blood, a wearer who adorned themselves in such magnificent jewellery was considered to be powerful and blessed. These antique items were treasured by the wearer and passed down to their families, becoming treasured heirlooms to inherit. Art Nouveau was a critical influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The influence of travel and exploration introduced consumers to new styles of jewellery and this movement in particular was heavily inspired by French design. The art movement consisted of fluid collections featuring natural imagery, flowing shapes and the female form. Delicate flowers, entwining leaves, mythical figures such as nymphs and mermaids and curved shapes, were all styles commonly appearing in the Art Nouveau pieces of the time. As this was the time of industry, enamelling and metal-work were popular craft techniques to create these unique items of jewellery and these were lovingly combined with a vibrant infusion of colours to breathe life into the burnished pieces. Of course, you cannot discuss the history of jewellery without mentioning the effect of the Second World War. The dwindling importance
of fashion was a clear reflection of the economy and the political state at the time, and so the jewellery industry took a huge fall during the Great Depression and WWII. Materials began to be rationed as early as the 1940s and metals that would be used for clasps and chains needed to be used by the military services. This abstinence from buying luxury items during the war had caused consumers to refrain from splurging on new pieces. As I mentioned earlier, antique jewellery was treasured and passed down through families and after the war people proudly wore those inherited items once again, while they also embraced new influences and styles such as Art Deco. Art Deco was a period of innovative design that has had a long-lasting effect, even on the styles of contemporary jewellery today. Sleek, sophisticated designs grew in popularity and an influx of geometric and symmetric shapes and patterns dominated British design during the 1920s to the ‘50s. Similar to Art Nouveau, Art Deco was also strongly linked to French and European designers, although many of the trends in Art Deco also reflected the fine art trends of the time, such as the Cubism and Futurism movements. Round-cut sapphire drop earrings, emeraldcut diamond rings and ruby pendants were the diverse shapes that represented the machine industry that created the Art Deco trend. Since the 1960s, jewellery styles have been continually defined, finding influences from a multitude of different eras and styles. Modern technology and fashion have created a greater demand for more accessible jewellery pieces that anyone can wear. Extravagant jewellery is no longer for the rich and famous and consumers are hungry for accessories that can be taken out of the box and worn every day. A combination of mass marketed jewellery production, e-commerce shopping sites and globalisation have all contributed to the creation of ostentatious costume jewellery that aims to mimic the real thing. With much lower price points, people can afford to adopt the latest trends whenever they like. Costume jewellery is a topic that has sparked great debate for a number of years, many specialists argue that its introduction to the market is bringing the value of fine jewellery down, as consumers can purchase hoax versions of beautiful items for a fraction of the price. However, in my opinion, mass manufactured costume jewellery will not pose a threat to the luxury jewellery industry, as the two are simply incomparable. Jewellery companies may worry that advances in manufacturing technology and materials will eliminate classic fine jewellery. After all, what is stopping people from paying less for an artificial diamond that has been grown in a laboratory? Yet synthetic jewels are not a modern day creation. Princess Margaret was fond of showcasing synthetic rubies in her jewellery collection during the 1950s, so what has stopped jewellery lovers from adding
Jewels - A Century of Sparkle
synthetic pieces to their jewellery collections for decades? It’s obvious - the quality; the type of customer who would invest in a stunning piece of fine jewellery, such as a brilliant-cut diamond and emerald tennis bracelet, would certainly not be swayed by a laboratory-grown diamond, or indeed a cubic zirconia imposter, due to the cheaper price. Customers of Hancocks have often revealed that they would rather own a small natural diamond than a cultured or labmade gem, because the artificial option gives the impression that it is low quality or cheap. Quality is always the driving factor for lovers of fine jewellery; you simply cannot expect to find the same exceptional quality in artificial jewels as you would find in the real thing. As someone who has worked in the jewellery industry for over thirty years, the desire for quality has never faltered. While styles and trends come and go, someone who is truly passionate about fine jewellery simply does not care for an imitation. One thing that has never changed throughout history is our fascination with diamonds. Fine jewellery lovers have cultivated a wonderful relationship with the translucent gemstone for hundreds of years. A flawless diamond is an object of pure beauty, worn on its own or contrasted with different coloured gemstones, a beautiful piece of diamond jewellery is the universal symbol of elegance, sophistication and class. Consumers still recognise the unique quality of the diamond, which is perhaps why it is still the number one choice for engagement rings. While antique engagements rings will also be popular due to their value and style, more recently, consumers have been turning to contemporary pieces by upgrading their engagement rings. Upgrades allow someone to change the look of their current ring by altering the size, quality, or the colour or type of the stone. While some may want to cherish the engagement ring that they were given, others prefer to alter theirs to reflect their current situation. There is a vast array of options, should the customer be fortunate enough to be able to afford to upgrade their ring, in most cases the stone is replaced by something larger, or of a higher quality. The settings can be polished and even transformed completely to create an innovative look. Fine jewellery is, for all intents and purposes, a fashion item which will be dictated by trends and the economic and political state at the time. Jewellery is therefore always susceptible to change according to the rise and fall of current trends and the influencers at the time. By now you will realise that jewellery possesses a value that other luxury items simply do not have. Whether this is due to the sheer quality of the materials used, the sentimental value, or the rarity of the item; every piece of fine jewellery contains its own special quality that adds priceless value to the wearer and this is something that the passing of time will never change.

lux Dents is accepted as a modern leading fashion brand, but few know that it is one of the oldest surviving fashion companies in the world. “Dents was founded by master craftsman John Dent in Worcester, England, in 1777 during the reign of George III,” said Chief Executive Deborah Moore. “He must have been a superb craftsman and also very creative, because his gloves quickly become a must have item of fashion in London society. “He and his employees were very meticulous, and from the beginning they used only the very finest English and French leather. They also created new cutting and fitting techniques, far ahead of the time. This soon became world famous as Dents’ secret fit”, explained Deborah. Dents was one of the first to become a truly global business supplying as far afield as Australia from 1839. In 1856 the company opened a Paris office and soon after had offices across the world from Montreal and New York to Sydney. It also owned factories in Italy, Germany, Belgium and France. During the 19th century Dents had become the top name in fashion gloves and a favourite with royalty including Queen Victoria, who had special gloves made for her. The Royal connection has continued; Dents was asked to make the George VI’s Coronation glove in 1937 and again to make the official Coronation glove in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth 11. Recent visits to Dents headquarters by the current Royal family, including the Duke of York, Princess Anne and also the Duchess of Cornwall earlier this year, help to keep the Royal connection alive. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Cambridge have both been seen wearing Dents gloves. Today Dents has built on this long heritage of craftsmanship and skill and still creates beautiful handmade gloves in its factory in Wiltshire using the finest leathers and materials available. Carefully selected leather is stretched and bench cut by hand, one pair at a time; and then lined and finely stitched in the same manner that has been used for centuries. Dents mainly uses four types of leather: sheepskin, deerskin sourced from North America; hair sheep from North Africa and peccary leather. Dents is one of the very few glovemakers in the world that has the expertise and skills to work with rare peccary leather, sourced from South America and recognised as the most luxurious leather available. Gloves made from peccary sell for up to £400 a pair.

Dents’ trend setting fashion leadership and fabulous craftsmanship will be reflected in every Dents fine accessory.
Today it takes five to seven years to train a glove cutter or hand sewer, and many Dents employees have worked at the company for decades. Six employees have been with the company for more than 50 years.
It’s rare to find items made of peccary leather. The world’s most luxurious leather is mainly sourced from South America and is heralded for its fabulous texture, gentle softness, its suppleness and durability.

Dents is one of the very few glove makers in the world which has the authority and skills to work with this special leather; and it uses it to make the most beautiful gloves. After the leather has been cut by Dent’s traditional master leather cutters, each glove is sewn, one at a time, by Dents’ talented handsewers, true craftsmen and women using skills that have been passed down the generations.
Dents gloves are not only stocked in most main department stores and fashion outlets across the UK, but are also found in around 27 countries around the globe, in the world’s most prestigious department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus in America, Printemps in France, Harry Rosen in Canada, Myers in Sydney, Hyundai in Korea and Isetan in Japan. At the moment Japan is the company’s most popular export market, followed by the US, but interest is increasing from China and Dents will be launching a brand new Chinese language website later this year. Internet sales from the Dents online shop are also very high and increasing. In recent years Dents has expanded its range to sell other fine accessories for men and women including hats, scarves, handbags and small leather goods. A Region for LuxuryGoods This July Artcurial, a leading French auction house will return to the principality of Monaco to conduct Monaco Auction Week – a week of the most luxurious collector items of Fine Watches, Jewellery and Hermes Vintage at the 5 star, Hotel Hermitage in Monte-Carlo. 2015 marks the 10th year of the sales week, perfectly located in Monaco, in a region which boasts the highest density of millionaires in the world, to offer the highest quality luxury items to an international clientele. In 2014, Artcurial sold 1000 lots to buyers of over 35 nationalities in the sunshine of the French Riviera, breaking four new auction records and with total sales of 14M Euros. Time and again, this Monégasque event has proved to be one of the most eagerly anticipated sales of the year. Artcurial is centered around a 120-strong team, at your service to meet all your requirements, whether you are a buyer, vendor, or just interested in having your objects valued. The vintage car sale will feature 11 exceptional vintage cars including 2 rare Mercedes Limousines that were owned by opera singer Maria Callas, and the jewellery sales will feature a Raymond Templier brooch and items of jewellery by Cartier, Boucheron and Marchak, as well as rare royal blue and light pink diamonds. Artcurial currently has two auction venues : Paris, the fourth capital of the international art market, where the auction house champions its sales of major works and objets d’art on the international stage ; and Monte-Carlo, which has become the special place for sales of the most luxurious collectibles (especially Jewellery, Hermès Vintage and Collectors’ Watches).
The Monaco market continues to thrive and excel as a hub for global luxury. To give some further context about the region and its luxury goods standing, world leading auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s have sales bases in the region, as well as premium real estate offices. The FT ran their ‘Business of Luxury’ summit in Monaco this June, John Gapper stating in his post summit article that “A life of luxury will continue as usual in US and European enclaves such as Palm Beach and Monaco”. In terms of the wealth of the region in general, Finance and business services make up almost a third of the country’s gross domestic product, with tourism generating roughly a fifth of revenue. Monaco has also recently seen an upsurge in their luxury housing market, experiencing a ‘luxury housing boom’ according to Bloomberg. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the region is home to the world’s most expensive apartment, estimated at £240 million. Without a doubt, our strategy of coming to the Principality to offer the finest pieces has captured the imagination of buyers and sellers. Year after year, this summer sale has confirmed our position as market leaders in France and Monaco for both Fine Jewellery and Collectors’ Watches. The select nature of a sale generates successful results. We have not only obtained strong prices for the signature pieces, but have also sold 75% of the 550 lots of jewellery. We witnessed the active involvement of Chinese and Russian bidders in the room, more so than in previous years. » commented François Tajan, Artcurial Co-Chairman.
Sales and Locations Founded in 2002, Artcurial established its position as the leading French auction house in 2014. It covers all major specialist fields, from Fine and Decorative Arts to Collectibles. Last year in 2014, Artcurial achieved total sales total of 192 million €, representing a 50% increase over 3 years. It has confirmed its position as market leader for Comic Strips in Europe; Collectors Cars in continental Europe; jewellery and watches in France and Monaco and Old Master Paintings in Paris. With a strong international bias, Artcurial maintains its presence abroad with offices in Milan, Vienna and Brussels, representatives in Beijing and Tel Aviv, and twice-yearly exhibitions in New York. History Founded in the 1970s as a French art gallery in the historic Sabatier Espeyran hotel in Paris, and now based in the historic Hôtel Marcel Dassault in Paris, Artcurial auction house specializes in arts and antiques, and holds more than a hundred sales per year, with auctions often featuring art, exclusive library collections, historic items, or fashion. Artcurial is a leading art auction house, and as such, has set a number of records with its art sales. In 2011, Artcurial sold Nicolas de Staël’s Reclining Nude for €7,033,418, setting the record for postwar artwork auctioned in France. Also in 2011, the auction house set a price record for modern art auctioned in France with the €5,775,000 sale of Lyonel Feininger’s Hafen von Swinemünde.

Tipple - Johnnie Walker Private Collection
Johnnie Walker Private Collection A continuation of the fabled Johnnie Walker Directors’ Blends, the Private Collection is a limited yearly release. For this first edition, master blender Jim Beveridge and his team have focused on smoke, layering old and elegant whiskies with feisty Islay spirit to create a complex and balanced blend.
Challenge: To package the unique proposition of The John Walker & Sons Private Collection. This collection was created to give a privileged glimpse inside the world’s leading Scotch whisky house; its blending heritage, pioneering whisky-making studies, range of distilleries, breadth of stock and the modern craftsmanship of the passionate people who make its exceptional blends. The release of the 2014 Edition is the first exclusive opportunity for John Walker & Sons, Johnnie Walker connoisseurs and luxury dark spirits collectors to buy a blend of great richness and sophistication, based on the most recognisable and celebrated characteristic of John Walker & Sons Blended Scotch Whiskies, smoke. Sedley Place had to design the bottle’s graphics, select materials for the gift box, design its graphics, and design a special booklet to accompany the numbered edition. The over-riding requirement was to create a design which would communicate the distinctiveness and quality of a special edition retailing for a significant sum. Idea: Sedley Place developed the concept of a market relevant limited edition (8,888 bottles) and developed the notion of a dark blue smoky bottle, a first for JW&S. This gave the product a distinct point of difference within the existing JW&S range, as well as allowing flexibility for future editions. Further luxury cues, such as an ornate silver stopper and rich outer packaging added further to the notion of exclusivity. Sedley Place worked with Diageo’s team to select a bottle with the right quality cues and individual characteristics, such as indented and angled contours, and to choose a distinctive blue for the bottle glass. We also crafted a bottle stopper with an indented pattern around the rim with the John Walker & Sons name and monogram debossed into the top. In addition, we created a special neck-band made of a heavy weight metallised substrate, featuring a printed half-tone, a debossed Royal Warrant and blue accent colours.
For Jeremy Roots, Sedley Place’s Head of Graphics, the overriding goal “was to create something both desirable and exclusive, something that would be appreciated by the eye and in the hand.” Results: With just 8,888 bottles available, the 2014 edition was over-ordered by markets from day one, driving internal and external demand. The bottles sold on their rarity along with no sampling whatsoever. Lucas Dynowiak, from Edinburgh Whisky blog said: “A must have for the collectors and whisky connoisseurs!” “The biggest Scotch whisky brand in the world is capable not just of volume, but also greatness. And while that greatness is beyond my reach, my heart is that little bit lighter knowing that people like Jim Beveridge care. ”

The HiddenWorld of Wine Perfect Cellar is a boutique wine importer and retailer that believes fine wine is a luxury that should be accessible to everyone.
Perfect Cellar began with one man, Moez Seraly, a Frenchman with a dream of bringing his favourite wines to the UK. These wines were taken off the beaten track, made by his winemaker friends in classic regions of France and which he’d enjoyed on many occasions around the dinner table. His friends had a shared vision of creating wines of quality rather than quantity: producing small batch, artisanal wines with distinctive personalities. On his return to the UK, Moez decided to address the lack of diversity and affordability of fine wine and brought these undiscovered wines and their stories with him. Time has passed and Perfect Cellar are now proud to represent a larger number and broader range of amazing producers and countries in their selection. The heart of the business has remained the same, to make great quality, fine wine accessible to everyone. Perfect Cellar not only sells wine online, they also offer wine experiences, wine club membership, a fine wine collectors scheme and a trade arm to encompass every need. Their aim is to help UK customers to build their own perfect cellar with a wide selection of fine wines. These include a range of exclusive award winning wines that can’t be found anywhere else in the UK. The wines inside Perfect Cellar’s curated collection include a selection of small, boutique wine producers from France, Portugal, Canada and Australia that can be delivered straight to your door. Two of their star products are Tendil Et Lombardi ‘Cuvée Hyménée Champagne NV’ and Mas Amiel ‘Vintage Maury 1969’ Their aim is to help UK customers build their own “perfect cellar” with a wide selection of fine wines, including a range of exclusive, award winning wines, which cannot be found anywhere else in the UK.

On their online retail platform www. perfectcellar.com the wines, champagne and spirits are presented with an interactive and educational approach. Still life imagery brings the portfolio to life with beautiful photography illustrating the tasting notes of each individual bottle. Perfect Cellar champions wines from boutique vineyards and low yield estates predominantly in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, but also outside of Europe including Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. Tendil and Lombardi’s ‘Cuvée Hyménée Champagne NV’ which originated from the Côtes des Bars of France. Hyménée meaning ‘perfect marriage’, represents the mixture of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that has produced this Champagne. The producer, which was established in 2006. £69.95 Mas Amiel’s ‘Vintage Maury 1969’ which comes from the Languedoc Roussillon area of France has been aged outside for 44 years in glass demijohns. Mas Amiel was founded in 1816 and is now the largest and most important producer of Maury in the world. £139.95 Chantelune in Margaux, France; Decelle Villa in Burgundy, France; Mas Amiel in the heart of the Agly Valley, in France’s Roussillon region; Senhora de Covento in Távora, Portugal; Tendil and Lombardi in Côtes des Bars, France; Ziraldo from the Niagara Peninsula in Canada, are just a handful of their most popular wines. These are artisan producers from classic regions, handpicked for their story and their flavor. They are all available exclusively at Perfect Cellar. Most of the wines inside Perfect Cellar’s collection follow biodynamic practices. This involves the use of a holistic and organic approach to wine making such as treating fertility and caring for livestock in an ecological way.
The Perfect Cellar Wine Club, which launches the first week of July, follows the same principles as the website; premium wine in an accessible fashion. A personal sommelier is appointed to each member of the club, who is able to help curate the clients own perfect cellar. Available in two size packages of six or 12 bottles, these are then delivered to the client each month. “Perfect Cellar wants to lead the way in bringing back authentic artisan wines on people’s dining table. Our goal is to become the market leader in the “£8 plus per bottle” segment both in the UK and internationally without compromising quality. There is more than enough high quality artisan produced wine around the world to fulfil this ambition. The market is spoiled for choice which leads to confusion amongst the consumers, which results in the explosion of mass produced and chemical rich wines which damage the names of some of the most authentic and historical regions and appellation. I believe we offer a better alternative. It’s all about love, fun and quality. Imagine being able to come home and open any bottle with the knowledge and certainty that it will be an absolute treat without spending an absolute fortune.” – Moez Seraly, Mas Amiel Region: Maury, Languedoc-Roussillon Mas Amiel was founded in 1816 when Raymond Amiel won the deeds from the Bishop of Perignas in a game of cards. It is now the largest and most important producer of Maury in the world, producing some of the most sought-after sweet Maurys of southern France. The land is populated with Grenache creating an array of styles: from the Plaisir table range, displaying concentration and elegance, to the classic, sweet vintage red
lux and white Maurys: rich, velvety smooth with silky fruit and perfume. The red Maurys are a dangerously delicious match with high quality, dark chocolate! Traditional Maurys, including cuvees Speciale, Prestige and Millesime, are aged under the sun in large, glass demijohns for deliberate oxidation, developing outstanding complexity of nutty, spicy and rancio character. Mas Amiel’s reputation for excellence is the achievement of Olivier Decelle, a brilliant winemaker and businessman. He follows a philosophy of natural farming meaning that only natural composts, and no synthetic pesticides or herbicides, are used on the 170 hectares estate.
“Mas Amiel embodies exactly what Perfect Cellar is about. They use biodynamic practices, small production, making very unique styles of wine that are incomparable anywhere else in the world.” - Simone Head of Marketing. Mas Amiel wines are exclusive to Perfect Cellar in the UK and only available online on www. perfectcellar.com. Mas Amiel uses Biodynamic principles: Biodynamic agriculture is a method of organic farming that employs a holistic understanding of agricultural processes. It treats soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock care as ecologically interrelated tasks, emphasizing spiritual and mystical perspectives. Some
Tipple - the Hidden World of Wine
have characterized it as “spiritual science” as part of the larger anthroposophy movement. Biodynamic has much in common with other organic approaches – it emphasizes the use of manures and composts and excludes the use of artificial chemicals on soil and plants. Methods unique to the biodynamic approach include its treatment of animals, crops, and soil as a single system; and the use of an astrological sowing and planting calendar. Biodynamic agriculture uses various herbal and mineral additives for compost additives and field sprays; these are sometimes prepared by controversial methods, such as burying ground quartz stuffed into the horn of a cow, which are said to harvest “cosmic forces in the soil”, that are more akin to sympathetic magic than agronomy. Tendil & Lombardi Region: Aube, Champagne Tendil and Lombardi is a new producer of boutique Champagne in the Aube, the most dynamic region in Champagne. For decades the Cinderella of Champagne, the Aube was left out of the various vineyard classifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are no Grand or Premier Cru vineyards here. It suited the big Champagne houses to keep it that way, as it meant that Marne grapes fetched lower prices. But in recent decades the Marne has become the most exciting part of Champagne for grower and independent champagnes. Tendil and Lombardi is an example of this new generation of top quality Champagne coming from the Marne. Since they were established in 2006, they have built exports to over 15 different country. They specialise in Champagnes featuring Pinot Noir, which thrives in the limestone soils and slightly warmer climate of the Aube. Their classic Brut NV, for example, contains 70% Pinot Noir, and 30% Chardonnay. Tendil and Lombardi style is elegant like Sophia Loren, who is one of their biggest fans. “Tendil & Lombardi set out with a dream to create a luxury, boutique Champagne brand and exceeded all expectations! They produce a range of generous, seductive champagne styles for all occasions”- Lorne Gray, Head of E-commerce. Tendil & Lombardi is exclusive to Perfect Cellar and is only available online on www. perfectcellar.com.
