Dr Omaid explains more, “Azizi Bank is extensively into CSR initiatives and have been quite active over the last three years. We have ensured our involvement on the Go Green initiatives and planted thousands of trees across the country. We are working closely with the relevant ministries and international non-governmental organisations on the various women empowerment initiatives and are also very active on the various environmental sustainability initiatives of the country. We have been closely involved with the society in supporting orphanages with essential amenities and have also supported victims of earthquakes and internally displaced persons. Azizi Bank have a CSR policy in place that is committed towards responsible banking in the long run.”

Naturally, over twelve years of operation, in an albeit rapidly developing economy, there have been a number of challenges for Azizi Bank; but, in every challenge comes an opportunity to overcome, improve, and evolve. Dr. Omaid explains how Azizi Bank is committed to facing every challenge that may come their way over the coming years, “Azizi Bank has completed a tough and challenging, yet quite interesting, journey of more than 12 years of existence in the country. We are foreseeing opportunities for the bank rather than any challenges. Success cannot be achieved unless you beat the challenges. Our team is committed and ready to face all the challenges.”

“We have already incorporated the Vision 2022 plans and are aligned to it. We are working with one of the top US based international consultancy firm to strategize our vision of sustained growth in a systematic and phased manner. Moving on to how Afghanistan’s economy has improved over the last two decades, and over Azizi Bank’s lifespan; “The job market has seen quite an improvement over the last 15-20 years.

The rate of unemployment in the country I believe has remained static at around 8-9% in the last seven – eight years. However, it has seen a drastic improvement from approx. 12% in 1993. Lots of employment opportunities have been created by the Government. Azizi Bank also emphasises on-campus recruitments from the leading colleges

& universities thus giving the young generation the opportunity to start their career from a strong foundation. The average age bracket of the employees in Azizi Bank is approximately 26 years.”

As for Azizi Bank’s future, Dr Omaid is optimistic on the back of expansion and brand development; “We are looking at a very bright future for the bank in the long run. Our dedicated approach and commitment towards sustainability will ensure the bank is emerging as the most persistent bank in the country. In the next two-three years, we will be coming out with our foreign representative offices in economically important neighbouring countries.

There are many other projects in the foray that will certainly ensure a positive development of the brand.”

Coming to the close of the interview, the conversation moved to discuss Dr Omaid’s association with Azizi Bank, and his personal achievements. “I have been associated with the bank since 2006 and have seen the bank grow to its present position. Prior to this role, I had been the Deputy CEO of the bank for more than five years. I have also served the bank in various categories since I joined in 2006 and was also the Chief Finance Officer of the bank. Within my current role, I am also responsible for maintaining international business relations with key corporates and stake holders along with my team.”

“Apart from my role as CEO of Azizi Bank, I also hold the following honorary positions in the country & internationally; • Chairman - Afghanistan Banking Association (ABA) • Chairman of the Banking Commission - International Chamber of Commerce, Afghanistan Wing • Executive Member of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, United Kingdom • Member of the World Confederation of Business, United States of America” Finally, we discuss Dr Omaid’s recent admittance into Oxford’s Academic Union, “I have been recently honoured with the honorary professorship of the Academic Union, Oxford and I am feeling extremely thrilled to have received this prestigious recognition. Also, I have received the Promising Young Banker Award from the Asian Banker last year along, with many best CEO awards internationally. I am truly honoured.”

The Business of Love and Why We Can’t Afford Not to Have It Why risk using the ‘L’ word in a serious business article? It’s not just another frivolous piece to make you feel good, it has real place in the business world. So how can love ever be any part of the demanding world of the average manager, when the priority is to just get business done?

Why do you have to think about love, when simple hard work is what it’s really all about?

I tried and failed to describe the humanness in business leadership without saying ‘love’. If you’ve picked up this article, you probably feel ok about loving your work - and saying as much. There’s another perspective for love here though – a deeply human examination of leadership that is people focused but continues to drive business.

We could of course use several other words instead – caring, authentic, ethical, considerate for example. I’m certain that if I asked any leader, at whatever level of an organisation, each would say that these qualities are crucial human aspects of leadership. Sadly, they are elements often missing in both leadership texts and practice. Intellectually, we reel them off and acknowledge their importance without really giving it another thought. But what if giving it thought is really the key to excellence in leadership?

Love in this context is a philosophical concept – an academic view not a romantic one. The one word that captures all the attributes we list above – it’s about giving a damn. If we are to discuss business from the human view, we can’t not talk about love – it doesn’t make any sense, even if it is a word that went out of fashion long ago in business; I’m arguing that it must be used to understand the foundations of leadership and how we can do business better.

Love is a highly contemplated concept amongst philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Humans have been debating it for centuries and continue to do so. Why do we find it so fascinating – and so frightening to speak of outside of our personal relationships? It’s because we have stopped seeing love as anything other than

the amorous kind. If we reduce love to this category only, inevitably it has no place at work.

Professional, credible careers must be based on hard, measurable data, heavy workloads and measurable objectives, all of which must impact the bottom line. We are required to behave ‘professionally’, without personal interruptions and distractions.

Love is the root of respectful relationships and represents our drive to see and create the best for those we love. In translating this love into the workplace, we can expect more trust, respect and accountable relationships.

In our attempts to be business-like and credible, we have ‘over professionalised’ human behaviours at work, to the detriment of the humanness. If your only working relationships are with inanimate objects, this is likely not a problem, but if you interact with other people at work, collaboration and facilitation of best practice in others is hampered.

Without such relationships, business is never the best it can be. We are left with teams who are disconnected from one another and from the organisation; who lack loyalty to organisational values and their leaders; and who lack confidence in their abilities and their development potential.

You know a team where love is missing, whether you’re brave enough to say the word out loud or not. These are the teams who are disconnected, unassured and who seem lost.

Aristotle argued that the first point of love is self-love. This makes sense in business. If we don’t care, aren’t compassionate and don’t have consideration for ourselves, we can’t be the best version of ourselves as leader as possible.

If you are tired and stressed, you can’t be the best possible leader. Well-being is as important to create internally as it is to facilitate in others.

Aristotle argues that the ability to love oneself is ‘noble and virtuous’ – so, it allows us to reflect and act in ways which aid excellence, ensures consideration and equality and enables growth and development.

There are varieties of love which are appropriate and beneficial at work. For example, the kind that forms meaningful relationships and enables us to care what happens to us, our teams and the organisation. Privately, we are more likely have

Javed Khattak is, among many roles, the Chief Financial Officer for Humaniq, a fintech firm that aims to be the herald of the next generation of financial services. In July, Javed was named as the CFO of the Year for 2018 by Wealth & Finance International Magazine. Following this, we spoke with Javed to find out how he achieved the extraordinary success he celebrates today.

Javed Khattak is a qualified actuary, as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in the UK, and an expert in finance, strategy, risk, investments, technology and start-ups. As a FTSE100 advisor, he is a recognised expert and a strong proponent of blockchain technologies, seeing them as the inevitable next step in the corporate and professional landscapes.

It is, however, his role as CFO of Humaniq that brought him to Wealth & Finance’s attention. Javed starts the interview by outlining the importance of the work he is doing at the firm, “Amongst other roles, I am the CFO of Humaniq, this role has been my primary focus over the last year. Humaniq is a financial inclusion project that, through use of technology in namely blockchain and biometric ID, aims to bring financial services to the unbanked population of the world and has successfully launched in several African countries.”

Perhaps a crucial element to Javed’s work is his advocacy for blockchain technologies, believing them to be the ‘next big thing’; a revolutionary development for innumerable sectors and fields.

“Humaniq, and many other innovative ventures, are able to come into existence thanks to this technology. This is in two ways; blockchain first made the initial funding for these companies possible through ICO’s, and alongside blockchain also provides these ventures with the tools and technology to execute their novel ideas and make them a reality.” Through effective utilisation of the technology, Javed sees limitless possibilities with most sectors benefitting from it, including technology, financial services and real estate industries, alongside transforming supply chains and empowering end users (e.g. through control of their personal data).

However, Javed admits that blockchain is becoming stigmatised due to false parties adopting the name to make money quickly; this is a frequent

occurrence with an exciting emerging technology but seems to be amplified in the case of blockchain and cryptocurrency. “Blockchain has become a buzz-word which is also attracting the wrong players who are using the opportunity to create outright scams and frauds. We have all seen the various non-blockchain businesses changing their trading names to add the magic word and see their stock prices rise. I believe this will all fade away once the regulators catch up and alongside the non-sophisticated ICO investors or contributors get burnt. Though amongst the noise, there are genuine players of course.”

It is still early in the technology’s lifecycle, but once the technology matures, it can and will revolutionise lives. I hope that the blockchain will do what the internet did for information and prove to be the empowering tool that helps decentralise the world’s wealth and resources.”

Javed’s work at Humaniq is only one part of his current workload; he is also the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of two companies, Zisk Properties and JKCoach. Javed takes a moment to talk us through his history with them, “I founded Zisk Properties in 2014. Zisk is an innovative property investment business, focusing on providing investment options to people with insufficient savings or a lack of financial understanding to have a more secure future and

even get on the property ladder through small steps. It already has a lot of traction, with hundreds of customers and managed to significantly outperform property markets with a weighted average return of just under 20% p.a. since its inception. Having successfully received our UK FCA registration recently, we are in the process of launching in the UK and are already in discussions to launch in UAE by end of 2018.”

“JKCoach was founded several years ago, and is an educational institute that provides coaching, tuitions and diplomas to Pakistani students with the aim to raise the education standards. By end of 2018, we will have over 500 students, with an ambition to expand into the rest of Pakistan and to be able to offer free but quality education to children from families below the poverty line in 2019.”

As you can imagine, being on the executive team of three companies results in a hectic work schedule. For Javed, this is just par for the course, “Busy probably would be an understatement. I am involved in most aspects of the ventures I am leading. Fortunately, having a great team that I can rely on helps a lot. For me, there is no average workday, as each one is very different to the previous one - the only thing that is constant is the number of hours that I am working each day!”

“What I do on any particular day depends on the ongoing projects and work-streams. Example; the past month I have been travelling significantly to speak at or be a panellist at conferences, lead a fundraising round, interviewing and hiring for new roles and spending time with our dev guys for launch of Zisk’s new web platform.”

Javed continues, bringing the interview to an optimistic close; “I am a firm believer in giving back to society – this is why I was initially attracted to Humaniq and precisely why I started Zisk Properties and JKCoach.”

“In addition to this, I love technology because either a smartphone or a tablet has become a companion as information is instantly available.

Financial services, like money transfers, are more accessible and cheaper. Medical advancements mean a better quality of life and improved longevity for those affected with disease or involved in accidents, and so on. As such, let us all work together to leave a part of us behind through our creativity, fostering new technologies, and not being afraid of challenges – all the while remembering to share happiness, be kind and forgiving to humanity as well as all that is around us.”

Helping Businesses Grow D&D Leasing is a multinational leasing and financing provider. To that end D&D leasing has found itself focusing on small ticket transactions, those generally seen to range between £1000 GBP and £250,000 GBP for a niche class of customer. These customers, often classified as near prime/subprime or difficult to bank, are the class of customer D&D Leasing encounters every day. The corner shop, the owner-operator, the small business, the start-up operation. Not quite ready to be banked and yet still in need of financing; whether it’s a computer, a set of desks, manufacturing equipment or even loans, D&D Leasing is there to help support these often, but not necessarily, early start operations.

Dost recognised the need for financing those operations that couldn’t seek bank assistance, due either to past poor credit performance or no credit history in his native Canada when he started the original operation back in 2000. Prior to incepting D&D Leasing, he noted that “the prime or blue-chip customer really had no trouble finding finance, however, if you had bruised credit it would be a very difficult road to seek out finance, most companies would turn you away, or require egregious down payment schedules from you.

“We simply wanted to be different, we wanted to provide finance to anyone who could prove they had a shot at making it, but just needed a hand up, so we set out to do so,” Dost comments.

The key to the business is to ensure a stable rate of return for investors and the company as a whole, while still ensuring a solid understanding of the exit strategy on the asset being lent against, and a sufficient down payment to make up the difference. And most importantly, being willing to take a risk to lend into what is almost always an unfavourable market. “While the term Small and

Medium Enterprise (SME) has become popular in the last decade, the true definition of SME, those business classes which reside in the subprime and near prime categories, still remain on the outer fringes of finance society and we feel it’s our mission to ensure we can provide them with ample finance to attain their dreams and success in this, and any market place”, says Dost.

That core customer, is seen everywhere today in business, and all too often they receive very little help from banking society due to their turn over (under £1,000,000) their size, (less than ten seats in the office) or their industry, (often seen as less desire by the banks). To that end, D&D Leasing mainly focuses on those particular areas to ensure that these customer segments are well served.

Today, D&D Leasing is established in markets in Canada, the United Kingdom and is planning an opening in the United States. While their original market of business to business clients has expanded to include consumer vehicles and commercial loans as well, they are still at their core a subprime and near prime lender, who are just as comfortable providing £2500 GBP finance for a computer as a £100,000 GBP finance for a tractor trailer. The real key to who they want to service is that small business and entrepreneurial sector. In fact, if you take a scan of their website it clearly states their mission statement: Changing the lives of one million entrepreneurs. At the heart of it Dost says it best, “help the entrepreneurs succeed, and they spur the economy to grow. Recognition like this, only helps that happen.

ME to WE, made famous because of their WE DAY event held in Canada, the USA and the UK, is a corporate brand and social initiative whose goal is to procure large scale funding for humanitarian operations around the world. As of 2018, D&D Leasing has partnered with ME to WE by providing £1.00 per contract per month for humanitarian aid.

It is their hope that as D&D Leasing grows that this initiative will continue to flourish and that lives will be impacted and changed on a global scale.

Artificial intelligence technology which successfully anticipated the Pound’s sharp drop at the start of August is being made available for free by the online trading platform INFINOX Capital.

For instance the software identified a worsening of sentiment towards sterling on 28th July, a week before the Bank of England raised UK interest rates. In the following days, comments by the Bank’s Governor Mark Carney and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox about the increasing likelihood of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit sent sterling sentiment reeling further. Despite the publication of official data showing an improvement in UK GDP, the Pound took its cue instead from the negative sentiment and plunged to its lowest level against the Dollar for more than a year.

Business should be caring: why the two should be intertwined Care is not a usual topic for an article on business. Why in a business context, would we need to mention it?

My background is in health care, so it isn’t a huge departure for me to consider this in a professional context – it may be more difficult if you work in industry, finance or other sectors underpinned by hard data and equally hard management styles.

The debate about care is philosophical philosophers have been dissecting its meaning for centuries, attempting to articulate it - and it’s surprisingly complex. In a dictionary sense, care is depicted in two core ways - as troublesome worries and woes - “all the cares in the world”; or the solicitous, authentic act of caring for another person, situation, issue or object. Either way, very few models of business or management mention a care aspect in either sense.

So why don’t we mention care in leadership and business? No plausible leader ever says they don’t care, yet we fail to contemplate this perspective of humanness professionally. In our concern to become more professional, we have lost our leadership roots; those solicitous, compassionate, attentive interactions, which facilitate growth and development, in turn achieving business outcomes. Are we afraid of seeming ‘soft’ and unbusiness-like?

From a holistic view, human beings are ‘whole’ – the sum of the experiences, values, learnings and ambitions that make us who we are. We must ensure we get the best from everyone by valuing them and recognising what they bring. This predictably incorporates all those messy feelings, woes (cares?) and fears that we usually avoid in business, because they are considered difficult or unprofessional to bring to work.

In business, we must ‘take care of’ the business processes and outcomes, as well as ‘care for’ people. We are still ‘us’ when we are in work or not; only the behaviours change between contexts.

We must care as much about what ‘matters’ to the individual as much as what ‘matters’ to the organisation. This way our teams come to work, work hard and achieve what they are supposed to. Caring is what it’s all about – not soft and unprofessional, but human attention towards our people. This enables the success of our business.

We have people and things we care about deeply outside of work and we also care about the work we do and the job we are in, so this makes us experts already. Consider how you can apply that in business. How could you have a team who are enabled to come to work and do their best? This isn’t the weak choice – it’s the option most likely to get the best from your team. Why? Because people choose their working environment, seeking to feel valued, respected and able to contribute meaningfully. If we get this, we will stay longer, work harder and ‘go the extra mile’.

If leaders care, it becomes easier to challenge our people. This is because they feel that they ‘matter’ as much as the business does – we all need to feel that what we contribute is important. Care provides the safety to explore, analyse, reflect and challenge. This enables meaningful change.

It provides the safety net needed for engagement in activities which carry significant personal risk (admitting that we might be wrong, need to change

or adopt new skills), because the situation is safe, and someone cares sufficiently about us to ensure the outcome will be positive and worthwhile.

We recognise immediately if care is lacking. When managers forget to care, display poor manners or behave as if they are ‘superior’, we see teams who are disparaging and who work against them rather than with them. Most people can recount a story where they have felt less than conscientious attention, care or compassion from their line managers. This is hopefully short term or transient in nature, but where it is more prolonged in leaders and managers, we intuitively know this will impact on staff turnover and retention rates, complaints, grievances and general personnel issues in the workplace. What happens when ‘hard business’ is the driver, and care is absent? I would argue that all of the things we want to achieve at work – business success, profitability and growth – will also be absent or at least affected negatively.

Care and the creation of a safe place to work with challenge and heavy demands, is about attentiveness and an acknowledgement that individuals seek to do a good job. No one gets up in the morning wanting to be difficult or perform poorly! If the leader reflects acceptance – ‘cares for’ their people – change, growth and development occur and successful business can be achieved. Positive business happens when individuals and teams prosper – care is the way human beings do this best.
