Most Influential Woman in Health Business Management – East Anglia GP Medical Practice of the Year - Norwich Lyn Bostan is currently working as a Business Manager and Non-Clinical Partner at the Lionwood Medical Practice in Norwich, Norfolk, which currently services a practice population of 8,100 patients and has the ability to grow to a serve 12,000 patients. We spoke to Lyn to find out more about her recent success.

Lyn started working for the practice in May 2009 following a very successful 23-year stint at a practice in Gorleston, Great Yarmouth. The decision was very hard for Lyn to make, however, as the Senior Partner and her husband were retiring, Lyn felt it was the right time to take the job. Lyn tells us about the work she has done in the industry and attributes some of her success to her team.

“Over the past eight years I have worked closely with NHS England and Norwich Clinical Commissioning Group to finalize the building of the practice.

Subsequently, two practices were

merged into one new purpose built practice which took place in March 2016. It was not easy and at times, very frustrating, however, looking back over the past 16 months it was really worth every emotion I felt.”

“Of course, I could not have done this without my Primary Healthcare Team. I have a great team of predominately female clinicians and administrational staff behind me. I am hoping the practice over time will become integrated in the community delivering healthcare not only to our patients, but to also the local community as a whole.”

Discussing some of the challenges that she has faced

during her time at the clinic, Lyn observes that part of the struggle is being able to fund the services that she wants to offer. She is also keen to point out that she would like to see women being able to earn more in healthcare generally.

“Like many other organisations in the NHS we face our fair share of challenges. The challenges we face are mainly funding of our service delivery. We are a GMS GP Practice and our funding is largely based on our practice list size with other funding streams available by delivering Enhanced Services. The practice staff are all highly skilled individuals who take pride in the delivery of the

services we provide under the NHS, however I would like to see the financial remuneration rise for women working in healthcare in general.”

Most Inspirational Woman in Emotional Dysregulation Treatments – Pacific North West USA Seattle Psych Studio is the private practice of Clara Doctolero, PsyD. Clara has 14 years of extensive experience with treating emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, depression, anger management, and anxiety. We invited her to tell us more about her company and her own view of being a woman in the industry.

Seattle Psych Studio, LLC is a psychological practice primarily utilizing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to execute change and achieve personal goals. Clara also uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness, alongside emotional intelligence awareness in her methodology. Thus, Clara has been able to demonstrate proficiency with improving mental health states, performances, and client experiences. Clara describes some of the challenges she has encountered as a woman in the healthcare industry.

“As a woman of diverse backgrounds, colleagues seemingly give me less credit than others with similar credentials. I transpire these emotions to working harder via bettering myself, my leadership and expertise. I am always looking to improve and am open to feedback, attend professional trainings and approach things that I am afraid of. Previously, I was anxious about public speaking, but this has now turned into one of strengths.”

Looking after the patient is the most important thing in the healthcare industry. Always looking to help them and

understand their needs, Clara explains what she believes helps distinguish her company apart from other similar studio’s in the industry.

“When dealing with patients, I am customer service focused and use innovative and scalable methods to develop and improve my client’s emotional intelligence in addition to solving other mental health problems.

I specialised and have mastery with change, transformative and behavioral analysis. I have strong interpersonal skills and proficiency with evidence-based tools including mindfulness, dialectical behavioural skills, conflict resolution, as well as interpersonal effectiveness strategies. I also respond quickly to new, current, and returning clients.”

With regard to her own career, Clara comments on her goals for the future and how she is aiming to reach these.

Reaching a global audience and writing books, Clara is seeking businesses who are interested in developing emotional intelligence into their work culture.

“Ultimately, my goal is to reach a wide range of people and create an emotionally intelligent world. I am going to do this by obtaining

my ICF certification and I plan to offer emotional intelligence coaching to individuals, small and large teams, lectures and eLearning videos.”

Most Influential Business Leader in Residential Nursing - Washington D.C. Metro Area Professional Healthcare Resources (PHR) is a family-owned and operated company dedicated to helping thousands of Maryland, Virginia, and DC patients improve their quality of life. We spoke to Eileen DeCesare to discuss what makes her and her company so successful.

PHR provides continuous care for its elderly patients, ranging from home health to personal care and hospice care. The team does not transfer out patients to other agencies, as there are different levels of specialized healthcare provided by a variety of professional and ancillary staff within the company. Many members of staff are trained in different clinical specialties to provide different levels of healthcare. The company has been recognized within the home care industry as one of the top 100 home care agencies nationwide.

Eileen details her inspiration behind founding the company, highlighting her aspiration to give the best quality healthcare available to all patients and clients. There have also been many challenges which Eileen has had to overcome to reach where she is now, as she describes below, noting how difficult it was leaving her birth country and starting a new company in a foreign country.

“Having founded Professional Healthcare Resources 23 years

ago, the aim was to provide quality home health care to our elderly patients. I aspired to give them the best quality care in the comfort of their homes. As a woman business entrepreneur, I have had many challenges to break through the glass ceiling.

This has been compounded by the fact that I came from another country to the US and have to work twice as hard to prove myself.”

Regarding the culture within the company, staff all work as a team towards achieving the same goal. Eileen is an example of how successful woman can be, as she lays out some advice for women looking to reach the top of their industry.

“At PHR, the company’s culture is based on the high expectations of delivering the highest quality of care to our patients. We have had many challenges in our professions and our business as we are heavily regulated so it is not just our desire to deliver the highest quality care and to ensure that but to make sure that we comply with regulation, standards of care and ensure best practice.

Fertility Specialist of the Year 2017 - Switzerland Natural Fertility Sarl offer online natural fertility coaching to clients all over the world. The company has been providing this service online for over 10 years. We spoke to the Fertility Coach team to explore the secrets behind their success.

Natural Fertility Sarl helps clients are in their late 30’s and early to mid-40’s and have been diagnosed with infertility. Many have used multiple rounds of IVF and ICSI without success and are now wanting to address underlying health issues and improve their fertility before proceeding with another round of IVF or trying naturally.

Providing the services the company does, the team believe that the issues they faced when starting the business were not just women-based, but that anyone starting a similar journey would have to overcome these journeys.

“At Natural Fertility Sarl, our business model is unique and when we started there was no one else offering this service online. As such, the issues we faced were not issues just a woman would face but anyone embarking on this journey. There were lots of learning curves to master to be able to offer the standard of service we do today. The only way forward was one step at the time and continuous learning, patience and perseverance.”

Standing out from competitors is something the team believe they do well, highlighting their team work as a key differentiator in the industry. Convenience

is key for patients and clients, something the team alludes to before going on to comment what advice they would give to other women looking to succeed in the healthcare industry, as the team concludes.

“Teamwork is key. Our team of fertility coaches and support staff all work closely together to be able to offer quality service to our clients. Our clients can access the program from the convenience of their homes any time of the day, any day a week which is not something that can be offered in a regular clinical setting.

“Finally, you need to love what you do and be truly passionate about your niche. Help your clients as best you can by reading and learning. Also, be interested in your clients and truly listen to what they are saying to be able to understand them and help them. Work models which are family friendly are much needed and equal pay for equal work is also needed. Couples should not delay starting families because of their careers. Careers need to make room for families and with all this wonderful technology available to us, this is now possible.”

Katherine Ricossa collaborates as a liaison between Patient Care Service and Quality Department. Katherine supports quality initiatives, nursing sensitive indicators, and no harm events. Ms. Ricossa participates with the multidisciplinary team to develop quality programs to ensure reduction in Never Events and continues to oversee the Wound Care Department, focusing on prevention strategies for reduction of hospital acquired pressure injuries.

The Relaxing Wellness Company of Calgary is a new style of healers who introduce heartcentered beings to look and feel their best naturally utilizing alternative wellness modalities and education. Jocelyn outlines the healthcare industry currently, explaining how her firm makes sure the client is always put first.

“The client always comes first here at the Relaxing Wellness Company. If there is no instrument to substantiate a clients’ claim or a study to validate the clients’ experience, then the clients’ truth can be completely discounted.

Therapists need to move towards understanding the clients’ experience. We have introduced a greater possibility in wellness by creating a space of healing where clients are completely looked after in the way of a multi-faceted referral system.

Removing our ego from the treatments has enabled us to embrace all methods of healing.”

Drawing on her experience, Jocelyn notes that her parents always strongly encouraged her to continue in education. This support has led to her success today and has helped Jocelyn develop her skills and run a very successful company.

“My sports fitness and therapy background provided me with a gateway to use homeopathic

medicine for athletic performance and recovery. My practice evolved and expanded into more complex and difficult cases unrelated to athletics.

I consistently continued my education to advance my abilities and have an educator role at the studio.

Regarding what advice she would give to other women looking to succeed in business and the healthcare industry, Jocelyn notes that family is important, as well as surrounding themselves with experts, respect for colleagues and being consistent.

“Ultimately, for women to achieve in this industry, I would recommend they build a strong family since it provides the foundation to success in all areas. They should hire experts for business building such as; branding, web management, bookkeeping and mentorship.

Our business success is a direct result of the deep respect and understanding we have for each other as Practitioners and as humans. Finally, provide consistency. Many of our business core values are the same as my family core values, meaning that we are consistent in the community and with

each other: Gratitude-IntegrityFreedom-Team Work-Superior Service-Love.”

Acute Mental Health Operational Manager of the Year 2017 - Lincolnshire NAViGO provides a wide range of health and care services across North East Lincolnshire for people with mental health problems. We spoke to Ellie Walsh to find out more about the company and the quality services it provides.

Navigo focuses on delivering high quality care and the team lives by its mission to provide services that they would be happy for their own family to use. Ellie gives us a brief outline of what the healthcare industry used to be like and how it has changed.

“Traditionally, working as a Nurse in acute mental health used to be seen as predominantly a male profession in a male dominated environment, both working directly with service users and in management. I certainly experienced this at the beginning of my career. Over the years, this has eroded and at NAViGO, all staff are treated as equals and are encouraged to continue their professional development.”

Ellie gives us an interesting insight into what she believes can make people successful in the mental health industry, before going on to explain how she uses these attributes to complete her own success.

“Concerning being successful in the healthcare industry, I think that as long as you are motivated and have the desire to strive then you can achieve your goals, healthcare is an ever changing

profession that supports people into leadership roles.

“Currently, I am leading a project to bring all service users who were placed out of area in locked rehab placements back to their own locality. As an organisation, we have made this a priority over the past year and I will ensure that we maintain this achievement with only one service user still out of area but already on a pathway to return in the next few weeks. This is an achievement I am incredibly proud of.”

Ultimately, Ellie will look to consolidate this project and many others she is working on in the future, ensuring that the services she manages will work to the best of their ability. Ellie signs off by explaining how she is already training and nurturing junior staff, so they are primed and ready to succeed her when she leaves her role.

“Looking ahead, I am also committed to nurturing, teaching, supporting and guiding junior staff members, ensuring that we have a workforce who can take over and run services as I and others head towards retirement in a few years’ time.”

Best Social Rehabilitation Services CEO - UK Penrose Options was founded in 1969 and since then the company have supported thousands of offenders and people recovering from mental health issues along their journey to independence.

We invited Gill Arukpe to tell us more about the firm and its overall mission.

Penrose Options work with a range of people, including many who are recovering from mental health illnesses, along with those with forensic backgrounds and some have a diagnosed personality disorder, among many others. These services provide choice and encourage individuals to take control and responsibility for their lives by giving them the right tools and information to do so.

Gill explains the firm’s strategy in ensuring staff provide patients with the best possible service they can.

She believes this is the firm’s key differentiator in setting itself apart from competitors, and how it uses this differentiation to its advantage.

“Along with my Board, I made the strategic decision to offer our health services to those who have very complex health issues and who challenge other services, often to the extent of being barred or thought of as too high a risk or treatment resistant.

One of my staff introduced me to a Psychological Informed Environment framework which we have introduced throughout our charity which ensures our staff are able to deliver services to those with the highest level of need.”

Commenting on what advice she would give to other women looking to succeed in the healthcare industry, Gill reveals what attributes she believes are vital to reaching the top of a firm within her sector.

“Fundamentally, you need to be resilient, brave and believe in anything is possible if you keep trying. A keen eye for opportunity always helps, people should have your eyes and ears out front, make connections and learn from every

mistake you make as you will make them.”

Looking ahead, Gill reveals her plans for the future, and where she would like to see the company.

Funding is high on the agenda for Gill, as she wants the charities she leads to grow, guaranteeing people have access to health care whenever they need it.

“Moving forward, for the charities I lead, I plan to achieve a better mix of funding and to continue

to deliver services in health that assist and not replace the NHS, enabling it to grow ensuring everyone has access to health care when they need it.”
