London RCE

Launched in June 2009, the London RCE is an active and diverse network of people and organisations working together to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in and around London, envisioning a sustainable London. The London RCE is a key building block of the Global Learning Space for ESD, being developed by the UN (United Nations) University through a global network of Regional Centres of Expertise (RCEs) on ESD. There are over 70 RCEs in different parts of the world today, including over 20 in Europe. We are the first European capital city to form an RCE.

Our scope – beyond London

Vision, Mission and Goals

The London RCE’s geographical scope is the UK government’s Greater London region, which is the area under the jurisdiction of the Greater London Authority, GLA. With over 7.5 million inhabitants, Greater London accounts for 15% of England’s population. It is however the smallest of the English regions with a land of 1572 km2 (just 1.2% of the total land area).

Vision A sustainable London where personal wellbeing, social justice and ecosystem health thrive in mutual balance

However, when London’s socio-cultural and economic characteristics are considered, it is clear that its sphere of influence extends beyond the geographical boundaries of the GLA. So, we could legitimately extend our region to cover the Greater London Urban Area (i.e. the continuous urban area based around London, including the area beyond Greater London, with a population of over 8.5 million) or even the London Metropolitan or Mega City region (i.e. that includes the rural hinterland of the Home Counties, with a total population of over 21 million). So, although we limit our remit to the geographical scope of the GLA, we concern ourselves with the issues beyond this boundary, generally up to the boundary of the London Metropolitan region.

Mission To become a leading ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) network that mobilises stakeholders from education, state, business and civil society around the common goal of building a sustainable London through learning while contributing to enrich ESD at global level through the Global Learning Space for ESD Goals With a local/regional focus: To build a sustainable London through transformative learning To provide a forum for empowering London communities To add value to the existing ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) networks in London and the UK with some relevance to London With a global focus: To contribute to the global excellence in ESD, especially by building on London’s diversity To learn from the partners in the Global Learning Space for ESD in the common endeavour of building a sustainable world
