Preface The cover page in its minimalistic approach engraves you the elements of Indian Modernism. The tri elemental colored strip, dominating and running around highlights the important role primary colors played in structures. The importance, the drama of shades and shadows gained over the vitruvious ornamentation style. The re-addition of the green, subtracted from ground, on the roofs. Simplicity and clarity of forms, and elimination of unnecessary Details, visual expression of structure, exposing the natural appearance of materials. A visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines. Everything crafter minimally and optimally, truly to the sense,

Editor’s Note
From the Dean’s Desk
We at Anjuman-I-Islam’s Kalsekar Technical Campus: School of Architecture believe that architecture is a not a mere subject but a way of thinking. We believe in creating and nurturing young mind to be Thinkers + Designers. We believe that in Architecture a student needs to have the critical ability to design Built Environments and other Non Built Structures that are Innovative, Inclusive & Sustainable in response to the cultural and functional needs of the society within socio-economic, ethical and technological framework. The editorial team and the students (a well woven group) overcame all the obstacles with concentration, motivation and help from all the friends, philosophers and guides. As the I/C Dean, I with the editorial team am proud to put forward this articulate magazine, which is a reection of the efforts of the team. A few words on the magazine… The magazine moves forward with the same ideology. It is a good mix of academic work, storytelling and other extracurricular activities. The faculty members have also contributed to the magazine. The magazine team has thus tried to capture snapshots from the various signicant activities conducted during the academic year. This magazine is a dedication to Ar. Charles Correa. The magazine in its form is a dialogue between different modernist within the Indian framework. Without further ado, I shall let you traverse and read through various sections in the magazine.
Dear Reader,
Dear Reader,
The previous year was a roller coaster ride for AIKTC - SoA. There were moments of pride, success, failure and loss. The graph of our journey had been etched in the following 100 pages. Qaleen is a patchwork of variety. We have compiled a few events and Achievements; demonstrated our (meta)skills and brought together numerous academic and non academic activities. However, this edition is not just about our institute. This edition is dedicated to the entire architectural fraternity as a memorial edition for Ar. Charles Correa. We have compiled his works, ideologies, journey as a designer in modern India and woven it around the story of Indian modernism. This is represented as graphical episodes throughout the length of the magazine. This magazine is the proof of the strength of our students who put day and night together to bring it to the level of and quality worth your appreciation. I take this opportunity to congratulate Neel and entire team for the hard work put together.
I am very pleased to present to you the second edition of Qaleen, the 2015 year book of AIKTC School Of Architecture. Indian Modernism, taken as a theme, I assure you an insightful and intriguing journey as you read this edition. Apart from the episodic stories about Indian Modernism and reverence to Late Ar. Charles Correa, it also includes the academic and extra-curricular work by the students and the teachers. A mixed bag of artworks, articles, competitions, events are a part of this magazine too. The dedication and aspiration towards work by the students of AIKTC can be seen throughout. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Director, the Dean, the Faculty and the guidance of the faculty editor Sonam Ma’am. I, and my entire team, are grateful to all of them for having faith in us and helping us in every way possible.
Preeti Pansare (AIKTC-SOA)

Oh my God! Five years? That's so long! Seems to be heard like yesterday. And here we are, Already towards the end. To ď€ nally get the tag, Dreamt about, for so long. Exhilarating,Wondering, Befriending, Unfriending, Learning, Teaching, Laughing, Crying, Abusing, Fighting, Making, Breaking! A family bonded, Unknowingly! Started with innocence, Moved further with sincerity, Ahead with determination, Crossing the parity, Reaching maturity! By redo we practiced. From failures we learnt. The theories, the juries, Made our nerves churn. The team work, the night out, the deadlines we crossed, Made it all fun. The tour to amazing places, Were just a part of run. And here we are today! About to leave this phase. The real world awaits us, To start another race! - Ambarin Chougle, Fi.Y.B.Arch. illustration By : Azad Mulla, S.Y.B.Arch.

The Journey So Far
PHILOSOPHERS AND GUIDES
Prayers and memories are what we have, to remember Abdul Razzak Kalsekar sir, th who departed us recently on 10 august ,2015. Deeply saddened by the loss which struck as a heavy blow, let us pray to the Almighty Allah that his sole rests in peace and that Almighty Allah grant him a better abode and give strength to his family to carry forward the baton for the rest of life. For a man with such high calibre and respect, an entrepreneur , a philanthropist, death could only end his physical presence between us, but his memories, his ethics, his teachings, his values are engraved deep in our minds forever.
Mr. Kalsekar sir was a wonderful man, cherished and celebrated by every one who knew him. May his soul rest in peace. May Allah grant him Jannat-Ul-Firdous!! Aameen!

You take your headphones out of your pockets to listen to some music, only to nd that they’ve tangled themselves up into a ball. A study actually identied 120 different types of knots that happen inside your pockets. This calls for a desperate need for an Earphone Detangler. This product ensures that henceforth you don’t have to spend any more time detangling your earphones.

The interlocking of multiple L modules creates an interesting installation. It gives striking shadows when light falls on it.
Bearing balls come in many different grades, giving us the exibility to assemble them to form a fractal. Considering a single ball as one module, and repeating its size in an ascending or descending order, gives us a denitive pattern, a fractal. Repetition and branching out of this entire fractal as one module further continues the fractal forming a complex never ending pattern. Finely nished iron welding used to join every ball to one another followed by a cleaning process called bufng.
The bustling streets, the cacophony of the street vendors, the ringing bells of the Mumbadevi Temple, the religious calls from the Jama Masjid... The true essence of Mumbai City can be found here, in the market streets of Mumbai. The main markets of Mumbai are the most busy streets of the city. The activities that happen on these streets are very fascinating. They are ranging from the roadside food vendors, the carts with water tanks, the street stalls, the loading and unloading of goods, the wholesale shops, to the showrooms of multinational brands and buyers from all over the city. The activities were documented street-wise.

One of the aspects of a good design is when it does not disturb the existing aura of the site. With this belief, the cafeteria took its form around the trees and water body on the site. Louvres on 1 side provides ventilation and also blocks the view of the crematorium nearby. A terrace garden helps to merge the structure to the context.
The core idea was to place cubes and cuboids in levels and variation in sizes. Suiting to the peninsula site which was given to us and blending it with the environment itself to give soothing experiences to the school and colleges around. The access to the site was very difď€ cult, one had to pass through stepping stones which wasn’t a great experience for disabled. But liking the idea of stepping stones which gave a thrill but got discomfort to some users. -RIDDHI JADHAV, S.Y.B.Arch.

As a designer it is our duty to fulll the requirements of the people. The basic concept behind the idea of designing the structure was to blend it completely with the environment. The highlight of the design is the grandiose entry foyer and the extended semi-open seating in front of each space. The consciously resolved spaces are designed considering the behavioural pattern of humans in the area and their lifestyle. Indoor and outdoor spaces are designed in such a way that it encourages and creates enthusiasm in the people to participate. There are also recreational spaces and utility areas designed to cater the needs of the user. Being an enclosed structure the roof is designed to bring in natural light to its fullest and increasing the aesthetical value of the structure giving it an organic form.
